SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

HOMETOWN LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Warning Signs A Tire Is About To Go Flat
GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS
Tires often produce w arning signs that a flat or blow out is about to em erge, so drivers w ho w ant to avoid such unfortunate developm ents can inspect their tires for the follow ing signs. • Varying w ear: Tires should exhibit the sam e type of w ear. The w ear on front tires and back tires m ay differ, but one front tire should have the sam e am ount of w ear as the other and the sam e goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire w ith m ore w ear could be about to go out. • Worn tread: Em ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, w ith George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires. • Low pressure: M ake sure their tires are at the m anufacturerrecom m ended pressure, w hich can be found in a vehicle ow ner’s m anual or by calling the tire m anufacturer or visiting their w ebsite. An under inflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blow out. • Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively m ay do so because tires are dam aged. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should im m ediately take the car to their m echanic for an inspection. • Physical damage to the tire: Som etim es tires exhibit physical dam age like bulges or cuts, and such signs could m ean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner.

Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

Husband Makes Frequent Nighttime Bathroom Visits ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, 79 years old, is getting up five or six times at night to urinate. The urgent care doctor said he doesn’t have an infection but doesn’t know what’s going on. He is taking Flomax, but that doesn’t seem to be helping. Who should he see? -- E.L.O. ANSWER: Urinating at nighttime (“nocturia”) is a common problem for men, but if this is a new or suddenly worsened problem, it requires evaluation. The first question is whether he is urinating a lot or a little. A male bladder typically holds about 500 cc (almost a quart), so if his bladder were full every time, he might be making as much as 2.5 liters a night. Nighttime urination is considered high-volume when it constitutes a third or more of total urine output for 24 hours. High-volume nocturia can happen when there is too much of something to get rid of: sugar, in people with mellitus (“sugar diabetes”); salt, in people who eat too much salt at dinner; water, in people who drink a whole lot of water, especially at night; and occasionally in people with congestive heart failure. In heart failure, there is not enough blood flow to the kidneys during the day, so when the person is at rest, the kidneys have enough blood flow to get rid of the fluid that has accumulated during the day (often in the legs and feet). Another cause of high-volume nocturia is diabetes insipidus, a problem with either the kidney or the control center in the brain, causing the kidney to excrete too much water. That control center uses a hormone called anti-diuretic hormone to regulate water excretion. Normally, it is high at night, so there is less urine output at night. Sometimes this normal variation is reversed, leading to excess urine output at night, even without diabetes insipidus. High-volume nocturia is most commonly evaluated by doctors in internal medicine, including kidney and heart specialists. Low-volume nocturia is caused by a problem with the bladder or, in men, the prostate. Urologists are the experts in figuring out where the problem is and the best course of treatment. Many men get treated for prostate problems when the real issue is an overactive bladder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My blood pressure drug, losartan, was recalled because of contamination issues with NDEA and NDMA; one is used to make liquid rocket fuel and the other is a byproduct in the manufacture of pesticides. How does this happen? Does the drug company share manufacturing facilities with companies that make these other products? -- EG ANSWER: I read some speculation by chemists on how the contamination could have happened, and it seems to me that one company made a new process for making losartan (and the related drugs irbesartan and valsartan) that, although cheaper and more efficient, allowed contaminants to form unrecognized. Although not recognized until 2018, it could have been happening since 2012. Other companies changed their manufacturing as well, unaware of these toxic impurities. This is a real problem, not so much because of this current recall (where the contamination levels are very low), but because it shows the industry lacks enough oversight to quickly identify contamination in generic pharmaceuticals coming from multiple countries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.

Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day THANK YOU, AMAN ROOFING! When I phoned to ask for an estimate to fix the soffit at my dad’s house, James was prompt in getting there and very courteous. After looking at the soffit, James noticed my dad’s VFW hat, and since my dad is a war veteran, James called me to tell me that they give discounts to veterans. Since the fix was small, he indicated they BRIGHT LIGHTS! Our neighbors on (local) lake across from (local homes) have been shinning huge bright lights across the lake. They started with one and are now up to three. These lights are so bright that it takes the joy out of sitting on our balconies in the evening, even in our living rooms. Very annoying! There doesn’t seem to be any reason for shinning them. Please be courteous and turn them off. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Every single morning, as the sun is coming up, lasting a few hours, your dog barks nonstop. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Coronavirus Scammers Scammers have come up with even more ways to defraud us, this time using the coronavirus. Contact tracers are people who make calls when someone you know has tested positive for the coronavirus. Their job is to trace the possible path the virus has taken from person to person. They only need health information and the places you’ve been, not financial or personal information. If someone calls you who insists on knowing additional information as part of the contact tracing, hang up. If you get emails or calls from someone saying they have a cure for the virus, or a sure-fire method of being certain you don’t get it, hang up. Their next questions will likely be to ask for your personal or financial information, or a credit card number so you can pay for shipping. Don’t fall for it. There are no approved test kits or cures that can be handed out to the general public. If you get email that’s supposedly from the government asking about where to send your stimulus relief check, ignore it. The government is not going to contact you about that. They’ll send your check (if you’re eligible for one) in the mail or they’ll deposit it directly into your account, the same one where they deposit your Social Security benefit. Scammers also will pretend to be people from your bank. If you get suspicious email that looks like it might be from the government with information about coronavirus, don’t open it, and especially don’t click on any links. Those can put a virus or tracer on your computer. To stay up on the news about the virus, use a legitimate source: www.ftc.gov/coronavirus. On that site you’ll find more information about avoiding coronavirus scams. Beware ... and stay safe.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.
WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. • Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own. • Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings. Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. Taking the next step The FLTCIP is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Check bagged frozen vegetables with the squeeze test: If it is hard and solid, it has thawed and refrozen, so you should choose another bag.
Magic Maze THINGS WITH ELECTRIC MOTORS
* “My family drink sodas from the plastic bottles. At the beginning of storm season, I fill a dozen or so about three-quarters full and put them in the freezer. They are good in coolers and such, but mostly they fill space, making the freezer not have to work so hard. And if we lose power, they help to keep frozen foods frozen longer.” -- T.R. in Georgia * “My family has always used mayonnaise as a salve on minor burns. I heard you can use toothpaste, too.” -- Sam P. via e-mail * “I love to put photos of family on the fridge. I found that the photos were getting ruined from grease and moisture in the air. To get around that I cleaned and laminated them. Afterward, I hot-glued little magnets to the backs, and now I can move them around to accommodate new photos. There are so many, and it gives me pleasure to look at them.” -- C.R. in Oklahoma. * Use a paper plate as a splatter guard in the microwave. It will not sag down into your food, and will not get dragged off to the side by any rotation.
TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog is freeking out over face masks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time I put on a medical face mask, my dog “Artie” starts barking like mad. When I speak to him, he will stop barking, but he looks restless and whines. He doesn’t bark at strangers that we pass on our walks -- just me and my husband. What is going on? -Sarah S., Burlington, Vermont DEAR SARAH: Artie is freaking out because he is familiar with you and your husband’s faces, and suddenly, without warning, those faces are gone! He may rely on your faces for visual cues, like a smile or frown. The sudden change is unnerving him. Taking off the mask isn’t an option right now, especially in areas that mandate face mask use whenever you’re outside due to the pandemic. Instead, the American Kennel Club recommends both desensitizing dogs to the face mask and helping them associate positive things with it. Before putting on the mask, show it to Artie and let him sniff it. Carry a mask around the house, but don’t wear it; let it hang off of one ear, or wear it under your chin, so that Artie sees you with it regularly. The AKC even suggests taping a mask on the wall next to Artie’s food bowl, although if he shows signs of stress having it there, take it down and try something else. Try using hand signals that correspond to the command or praise you want to give. This can help redirect his attention from your face and help him make the connection that you are still there and providing guidance. Make sure that Artie is in a comfortable state before training sessions. Ease off if he begins to act concerned or stressed. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

Sherry Sabo Shares Advice for Schooling at Home BY AMANDA DUDEK
Teaching children at home has been a valid educational option for many years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many parents to seriously consider homeschooling their children for the first time. A number of families are in districts which will hold virtual classes this fall, while others are looking to lead their children’s education themselves. Sherry and Lou Sabo of North Winton Village have led one of New York’s 17 LEAH (Loving Education At Home) chapters for 17 of the 18 years they homeschooled. Today, they continue to volunteer as Rochester-Finger Lakes Regional Representatives for Homeschool New York/ LEAH. The Sabos understand the challenge of balancing work and family. They are local businesses owners, have successfully raised and homeschooled their three children, now ages 26, 28 & 29, and are expecting their first grandchild. A leader for LEAH, a faith-based homeschooling organization which has supported area homeschoolers for more than 35 years, Sherry Sabo shares advice, encouragement and practical tips both for those homeschooling their children and for those whose children will attend virtual classes at home.

“We have been talking with a lot of people who are considering homeschooling this fall,” says Sherry Sabo. She explains that while some families were already planning on homeschooling, others are feeling forced into it by the COVID-19 pandemic. She encourages these families to think of teaching their children at home as a positive opportunity. “The one-on-one tutorial method of education is a most effective method of learning,” explains Sabo. “That is why we sometimes hire tutors. Individual instruction is a real positive compared to many children getting a small slice of the teacher’s time when possible.” Sabo adds that parents are more able to tailor their curriculum to each child and his or her interests. Curriculum can be developed around those interests while taking into account learning needs and adaptations, special needs, and accelerated learning. “It is wonderful to be able to fine tune their schoolwork to support their interests and needs,” she continues. “You can help them find their passion and supplement their learning to help them follow their dreams, beyond the standard curriculum. She adds that including her family’s faith and values into the learning process was very important to them, as well. Regardless of the materials, each curriculum must meet subject requirements listed in the New York SED homeschool regulations. “It’s important to understand the Homeschool regulations in New York State,” Sabo said. “They are the plumb line for your relationship with the school. They also keep you from trying to do too much, creating anxiety and stress, or from not doing enough.”

Parents whose children are attending their school’s virtual classes at home may not have to choose their curriculum, but there are plenty of other challenges. “Many parents shared their experience of extreme frustration attempting online classes while juggling one or two devices between their children. It was very frustrating because they felt they couldn’t keep up,” explains Sabo. “They were accountable to several teachers, yet each has a different style and amount of work they expect.” While there will doubtlessly be differences from teacher to teacher, the fall should see some of the other bumps smoothed out. Sabo suggests parents of virtual schoolers and homeschoolers alike limit screen time as much as possible. “Supplement the content with books you read with your children,” suggests Sabo. “Over and over again, reading together has been proven both beneficial and effective, opening up new worlds of imagination and improving the vocabulary.” Several students also struggle with focus, particularly when their environment has changed. While Sabo again highlights the importance of limiting screen time, she also encourages parents to be creative with their setup. She suggests not trying to create a child’s classroom at home. “Don’t try to bring the public-school classroom set up into your home,” she advises. “Let them get used to you being their teacher. Minimize seat time and give them frequent breaks. For example, children in grades K-3 shouldn’t spend more than an hour of seat time total and not all at once, but rather using nonsequential, 15-minute lessons. Meet the requirements;
"If
then let them venture on their own. Let them self-direct their learning and explore their own interests, fostering and protecting their love of learning. This helps create lifelong learners.” Sabo suggests setting a timer for each lesson and making sure breaks include running and other movement-based play. She also recommends allowing each child to spend time doing something that is fun for them at the end of each school day. “It doesn’t have to be a reward every time,” she notes. “But it is fun to throw that in.” The changes and challenges parents are facing this fall can be daunting, but Sabo insists parents can do this. “Do not be afraid,” she exclaims. “You have already taught your child so many other things. Don’t be afraid of some of your weaker areas. If your child is taking classes virtually with their school, the school can offer extra resources and support. If you have decided to homeschool, most curriculums provide excellent teacher guides for each course. If you are nervous about a particular topic, practice the lesson a few times until you feel more confident.” “Enlist the help of others such as grandparents,” continues Sabo. “Share some teaching with a homeschooling neighbor. Join a homeschool co-op to attend one day a week for classes like art, gym, science, and other topics. If there is an outstanding need, there will always be a resource. Seek out friends who are strong in areas with which your child needs help and in which you also struggle. Consider hiring a tutor for concepts which remain challenging."
you are determined, there will always be
creative ways to make it work!" RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Find a local dealer/installer at www.iwfa.com.
