KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND Hometown Events ____________________20

(NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come.

Kidz Korner ____________________15

Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort.

Pet Place ____________________23

For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning. The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain.

Puzzle Answers ____________________31

Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop.

Sip & Dine _____________________2

Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include: • Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching • Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users • Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can • Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean • Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch • Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too

Gardeners I have a strip of land between my fence and my neighbors that is unsightly with overgrowing Lemon Balm, Creeping Charlie, and sundry small Buckthorn trees and other plants and weeds. Eventually it will infiltrate their property and my backyard, as well. I was going to try to scrape it down but the strip is only 6’-7’ wide. Two people have suggested using a weed killer but after having had a bad experience with another herbicide, I am hesitant. I would like that area to be more of a woodsy

SAFETY IN AND AROUND THE POOL Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well. YARD SALE TIPS Be reasonable when pricing items. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Pricing items at one-third of their initial cost is a good starting point. This leaves room for negotiation.

YARD SALE TIPS Place signs around your neighborhood. Be aware that there are ordinances that govern where signage can be located. Check with your town’s municipal office to determine if you need any permits for your signs or the yard sale itself. Make sure signs are legible for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Bring small bills. In a world where credit and debit cards prevail, yard sales stand out as cash-only endeavors. Save the seller the hassle of breaking big bills and using up all of his or her change by bringing along small denominations and even some change.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Media Holds Hidden Dangers Even before the lockdowns brought on by the coronavirus, too many seniors felt isolated. Now it's even worse for many of us with the lack of face-to-face interactions ... and we've turned to social media for connections to others. There, on Facebook and Twitter, in chat rooms and email lists, we've found friends to talk to and pass the hours of this lockdown. We feel happy to have these people at the other end of the keyboard. It's good for us. Or maybe not. The big problem with social media is that we really don't know who is on the other end. The new friend who seems so interested in us might actually be a scammer, just waiting for the right moment to spring the trap and ask for money. How can you refuse, you'll wonder, if someone you've come to know so well asks for help? Or maybe we've shared too much information, such as our location or our real name. Or how about the new friend who sends funny cartoons, one of which might contain a virus that leaves our computer open to hackers? Add in an election year, and it's all too easy to talk online with people who supposedly share our views. Quite commonly they ask for money or contact info. Some things to think about: If you really want to connect with others on social media, create a fake name for it. Learn how to block people and don't add just anybody to your network or list. Don't give out your real name or location, no matter how friendly other people seem. Focus on an area of social media with a narrow, safe focus such as pets, cooking or gardening. Better yet, call up a few people you already know and ask if they'd like to meet for online games, such as chess, or just chatting. They might feel just as isolated as you do and welcome your overture.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Vitamin D Deficit After Gastric Bypass --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old woman in fair health. I had strong bones until I had gastric bypass surgery. Within two years, I developed osteoporosis. In 2016 my parathyroid hormone level was found to be elevated. However, it has come down over the past year or two from 97.76 to 68.95 pg/mL. The endocrinologist now has me on 8,000 IU of vitamin D-3 per day. My calcium was 9.3 and ionized calcium was 5.0. Meanwhile, the rheumatologist treating my osteoporosis has prescribed Reclast infusions once per year. I just received my second one this month. This summer I broke a toe on my right foot with no known trauma. In October I sustained a stress fracture of my left heel bone, again without any known trauma. I am very worried about what all this means to my future bone health. -- L.M.J. ANSWER: I suspect you had vitamin D deficiency due to the gastric bypass surgery, which prevents your body from absorbing it efficiently. Without vitamin D, your bones cannot take up calcium as effectively. The parathyroid hormone often will increase in this situation, and this is called “secondary hyperparathyroidism.” It’s important to note that both your total and ionized calcium levels are normal. Ionized calcium is the active form -- some calcium binds to albumin, a major protein in blood. In secondary hyperparathyroidism, the calcium is never high. A high calcium and high parathyroid level always means primary hyperparathyroidism, which almost always comes from a tumor of the parathyroid gland. Unfortunately, I have seen people whose doctors have confused this point and missed the diagnosis. With replacement of your vitamin D (at a high-enough dose, you can absorb enough), the PTH level is settling back down to normal, and it would be expected that your bone strength would start going up as well. I would expect your endocrinologist or rheumatologist to follow your bone density through a DEXA scan. The Reclast (zoledronic acid) is an intravenous bisphosphonate, and it slows down reabsorption of your bone. Between the higher vitamin D and the Reclast, your bones should get better and your risk of fracture will decrease, but it will take time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you discussed the effect of ibuprofen on men with an enlarged prostate. I am a 78-year-old who runs 15-20 miles per week, with benign prostatic hyperplasia and who also has reduced urinary frequency with occasional use of Advil. As a runner, I have been reluctant to make it a daily regimen because I have read that inflammation is part of the body’s response to tissue damage, which is crucial to the healing process and is important for muscle growth. When ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reduces symptoms, does it affect the healing process also? Can you comment on the pros and cons for runners? -- B.M. ANSWER: High-dose ibuprofen was shown to inhibit muscle protein synthesis following weightlifting exercise. This led to a suspicion that it might impair the gains in muscle strength that are made with exercise. However, a Canadian study showed that moderate doses of ibuprofen (400 mg after exercise) did not impair muscle growth or gains in strength. Using ibuprofen for occasional muscle soreness or for the purpose of reducing prostate inflammation should not adversely affect your performance in running. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NEW ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT RENEWABLES POST COVID-19 (NAPSI) — Cleaner air can improve public health, maybe even save lives. Fortunately, renewable energy resources—wind, sun, hydropower and the like—are now producing more electricity than coal. That’s where innovative energy storage solutions come in. They help create a cleaner world, encouraging investment into clean, green, renewable energy. To help, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions. New bi-partisan efforts in states such as New York and the Trump administration are in alignment to support new energy storage technologies that drastically improve the economics of wind and solar projects. The global rise in electricity generation from renewable sources has led to increased demand for advanced batteries that can be used to firm up this intermittent supply. This requirement is particularly important in areas where grid connections may be tenuous, unreliable or even non-existent. Additional demand for advanced batteries is presented by grid applications such as peak-shifting and Transmission and Distribution (T&D) capital deferral. Energy storage systems provide many ways to manage the power supply for a more resilient energy infrastructure, and bring cost savings to utilities and consumers. Batteries allow the use of electricity whenever it’s needed, not only when it’s generated. However, traditional battery economics and performance have not proved helpful as utilities look to increase renewable penetration through long-duration energy storage. The Problem One of the challenges to growing a North American energy storage industry, however, has been a dependency on a supply chain of hardware components, metals and chemicals, many of which come from outside North America. As well, metals such as lithium and vanadium used in some batteries are impacted by price volatility and security of supply. An Answer Those same risks do not apply to zinc-air batteries. Zinc is abundant and inexpensive, with a significant North American supply. Its chemistry is robust and safe. A zinc-air battery has decoupled energy and power, making it one of the lowest-cost longduration battery storage solutions available. A safer, cleaner future requires less polluted air which means replacement of carbonbased power generation with renewable, sustainable sources of electricity. Longduration, low-cost energy storage systems such as zinc-air will be a key driver to a quicker path towards a greener future. A “bet” on energy storage is a wager that will deliver a cleaner planet that will thrive for current and future generations, suggests Ron MacDonald, president and CEO of Zinc8 Energy Solutions, the leader in zinc-air battery technology, a unique flow battery technology using zinc and air as fuel. REDUCE YOUR ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

Transform your yard into a

Patty Love, Founder and Program Director of the Rochester Permaculture Center, believes our choices must go beyond the “how many and where” approach to restore— and even improve—our slice of nature.

“People typically choose plants based on creating an attractive display,” explained Love, a consultant and researcher, and Certified permaculture designer and teacher based in the Genesee River Valley. “A Permaculture design approach brings in plants which fill those same functions of beauty but also feed wildlife, pollinators, people, or all three.” Permaculture is a design system that harmoniously integrates people and landscape to meet the human needs while cultivating natural ecosystems which are diverse, stable, resilient, and regenerative. Put simply, it can be applied to landscaping to create beauty while living in beneficial harmony with the animals and natural environments around us. First, we must identify our natural environment. “We live in a humid temperate forest biome,” said Love. “That is the 4th most productive environment in the world in terms of converting sunlight into biomass. Since our own native climate is already so productive, why not recreate it as we landscape to take advantage of that potential? You can create your ideal look with edible plants which create a safer environment for your children while teaching them about nutrition, food origins and positive relationships between plants, animals, beneficial insects and other wildlife.”

Make your yard an environmentally friendly oasis.

TRY SOME OF PATTY LOVE’S TOP 10 TIPS Find natural alternatives to pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Our properties and waterways are all connected. What we put on our lawns typically finds its way into Lake Ontario, where nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers contributes to algal bloom. Other lawn chemicals can damage the water quality and disrupt food chains.

Think in layers. Natural environments consist of 8 layers: overstory (or canopy), understory, shrub, herbaceous, ground covers, roots, vines, and fungi. Select plants from more than one layer when planning an area. Using this pattern from nature allows for a tremendous amount of diversity while creating successful ecosystems for plants and animals.

Set the goals for your natural space; then select a design that works. If one of your goals is added privacy, for example, choose shrubs or trees that provide that. The Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District offers many affordable varieties at its annual plant sale.

Build better lawns. Get the look of a short, green lawn beyond the monocrop that is grass. Dutch White Clover, thyme and chamomile are all low growing green plants that will fill out your lawn, add edible elements, and reduce the need for mowing.

Swap out favorite colorful landscaping plants, like the “burning bush” shrub, with beneficial native plants such as the blueberry bush. Its leaves also turn bright red in the fall, and meanwhile, it provides flowers for pollinators and berries for humans and animals. Plant it with beautiful nodding wild onions whose scent can deter deer and larval pests of blueberry plants. Keep author Dave Jacke’s 7 F’s in mind: Plants should provide at least some of these benefits: Food, Fiber, Fun, “Farmaceuticals” (plants with medicinal properties), Fuel, Fertilizer, and Fodder. Make sure the plants you choose are filling at least three of these functions!

“An environmentally responsible landscape is a way we can give back to nature while lowering the environmental impact of development,” Love encouraged. “It can improve our quality of life and restore our environment.”

Let the dandelions grow. Dandelions are one of the earliest and most important food sources for pollinators, and every part of the dandelion is edible. They are even medicinal! Choose a fruitful hedge. Rather than using an invasive shrub like Japanese barberry to create a hedge, go with a bountiful fruit producer like currant bushes. Raspberry and blackberry bushes also create a bramble border while producing many delicious berries. Aronia, a flowering shrub, are very easy to care for and produce a beautiful, edible black fruit which is high in antioxidants. Elderberries are also phenomenal because they are so versatile, growing nearly anywhere. Think of the bees! Bee Balm is an excellent option as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators are very attracted to it, and you can eat the petals and leaves! For vegetables, consider perennial Sea Kale or Turkish rocket, a perennial broccoli-like plant. Start small. Outline a designated space, even a square yard, and select a small community of plants for that environment. Let it be natural and see what happens!

GRASS ISSUE I agree with not mowing grass into the road. Near our hamlet, on the next road over, there was a long stretch-and I mean a long stretchof grass over one half of the road last week. It was not some little patch. Next time, I will take a picture. It is not compliable with NYS law. It was cleaned up, but the point is you can’t be putting tons of grass in the road. NO GRIPE WITH PAINTED ROCKS! If somebody is posting a positivity, I do not think that is trash or anything to gripe about. Smile and move on. PROPERTY AND PRIVACY My wife and I settled down in (local town), desiring a quiet and private setting. For some reason, one of the neighbors decided it’s okay to walk through our property with GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

their two dogs. We are animal lovers and not concerned about the dogs or their poop. What is problematic is we no longer have our privacy - we actually feel like moving. We don’t want to upset our neighbor, as they may take it personally. I just can’t understand why someone would do this. They have a large piece of property, as well, and a quiet road to walk down. It’s startling sometimes since it’s so private and quiet where we are. It took all our life savings to purchase our home, and it doesn’t even feel like “ours,” Please everyone, respect property lines and move if you need more room to walk. LOUD MUSIC My neighbor plays loud music outside for up to eight hours a day. If indeed you need help coping with these stressful times, see a therapist. If you have

A FIELD OF SUNSHINE To all the farmers who plant fields of sunflowers, thank you! It brings happiness to so many who pass by, stop for a quick photo or purchase a few stems. May we all take advice from a sunflower: Be bright, sunny and positive. Spread seeds of happiness. Rise, shine and hold your head high.

id. trouble hearing, get a hearing aid. s. The loud music is simply ridiculous. If you want to play it, fine, but the ot entire neighborhood should not have to listen to it. A good rule of o thumb is to follow social cues. If no c, one else in the area is blaring music, you shouldn’t do it either. KEEP CATS INDOORS I’m unpleasantly surprised to see so many outdoor cats in my neighborhood. In addition to being less safe when left to roam outside, outdoor cats also cause problems for humans and other animal species. Outdoor cats are vulnerable to attacks by wild animals like foxes. Cruel humans can harm them, kill them, or steal them to sell to laboratories. Outdoor cats can be hit by cars. It’s dangerous for them to be out in extreme weather conditions, both hot and cold. Cats are an invasive species due to human carelessness, and outdoor cats wreak havoc on

wildlife and the ecosystem. Not all neighbors like your cat on their property, using their flower beds as litter boxes, for example. Be a responsible cat owner and keep your feline friends in the safety of your home. A LOT OF NERVE Neighbor, who do you think you are, offering my property to your friends? What I do or don’t do with my possessions is my business, not yours. My property does not belong to you, and it is not a toy chest for your prying eyes. Stay off my land, and if you see something you want, buy your own!

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 2, 1666, the Great Fire of London breaks out in the house of King Charles II’s baker near London Bridge. When the Great Fire finally was extinguished on Sept. 6, more than 80% of London was destroyed and 100,000 people were left homeless. * On Sept. 3, 1939, Britain and France declare war on Germany. The first casualty of that declaration was the British ocean liner Athenia, which was sunk by a German U-30 submarine. * On Sept. 4, 1957, Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus enlists the National Guard to prevent nine Black students from entering Central High School in Little Rock. The armed Arkansas militia troops surrounded the school while an angry crowd of some 400 whites jeered, booed and threatened to lynch the frightened teenagers. * On Sept. 5, 1969, Lt. William Calley is charged with premeditated murder in the deaths of 109 Vietnamese civilians at My Lai in March 1968. Calley, a platoon leader, had led his men in a massacre that was only stopped when a pilot landed his helicopter between the Americans and the fleeing South Vietnamese.

Beat up to 5 minutes to add air and increase volume. Pour into two 1-pint containers and refrigerate. Economical, spreads like soft margarine, tastes great and you get the benefits of olive oil in a natural product.” -- S.B., British Colombia, Canada * Mix a quarter cup of salt in with two tablespoons of bath wash for a sudsy, refreshing, skin-soothing salt scrub. * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” -- K.H. in Myrtle Beach, S.C. * Some tips for middle or high-school kids going back to school virtually: Have a designated workspace. This can be as simple as a large tray turned upside down and placed on the end of the bed with a storage ottoman to sit on. It will be better than trying to lay in bed and work. * Mold on baked goods goes beyond what you can see. The mold puts out “feelers” that are invisible to the naked eye, so if you see mold on your muffin or bread, don’t think that you can cut that part off and be done with it. To be safe, throw the whole thing away. * “I needed an outlet on my porch, so I ran a long extension cord along the edge of the patio and fed it up into a piece of PVC pipe that was left over from a plumbing job. It holds the end of the cord at about outlet height. Whatever works!” -- V.L. in Arizona

COVID Plays Havoc With Puppy's Vaccines --DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My Labrador puppy, "Charlie," is six months old. He received his first and second round of vaccines, but then our state went into lockdown. Can I hold off on getting the rest of his shots for now, until restrictions ease? -- Blake F., Sacramento DEAR BLAKE: Contact Charlie's veterinarian first to find out if they are allowing non-urgent visits. The first year of vaccinations is extremely important for your dog's development and long-term health. Lockdown mandates are making it difficult for everyone to figure out if and when they should visit the vet for their pet's checkups. But veterinarians know how important it is to keep to the vaccine schedule (to learn more, go to akc.org and search for "puppy shots schedule"). By this point they should have some guidelines and a plan for scheduling routine appointments. That also goes for maintaining adult pets' vaccinations and keeping their licenses current. Contact the veterinarian to find out if they're booking routine appointments. What if you aren't able to get an appointment to get Charlie's third round of shots? For now, limit his exposure to other dogs, as he still has some risk of contracting serious illnesses like parvovirus. That means no dog park visits or play dates (unless you know the other dog's vaccine status). Let him run in the backyard or go to a state park or other large outdoor area that allows pets and doesn't have many people or animals around. Spend more time training him on basic obedience commands -- if you're both stuck at home, now is the perfect time. As soon as a vet appointment opens up, take Charlie in and get him up to date on his shots.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive. A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries. The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it.

Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options. The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item).

Puzzle Answers This Week

WOMEN IN STEM Despite the widely held notion that men exceed the number of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, data indicates that there isn’t actually much disparity among the sexes. According to the National Science Foundation, women equal men in terms of bachelor’s degrees awarded in most of the fields of STEM, including biosciences, social sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. The only STEM fields in which men still outnumber women are computer science and engineering. Women are just as capable as men to meet the demands of STEM careers. Raw IQ tests from the British Psychological Society have indicated that women and men frequently score equally well, with some studies suggesting women have the edge. In terms of mathematics prowess, girls score a mere 3 percent lower than their male counterparts on the math portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, according to the College Board.
