On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, I dropped a portfolio of legal papers in Routes 5 & 20 between Parrish St Ext and Route 21 in Canandaigua. By the time I realized what happened, papers were strewn about on both shoulders of this busy highway. While picking up papers from one side of the road, I noticed a woman had stopped on the opposite side to get the papers which had blown there. In my state of panic, I didn’t think to ask for her name, but she definitely saved the day for me and restored my faith in the kindness of others.

The [local transportation] service has gotten so bad this summer that I must call them first to ask if a bus is running that day. I was at Exit 9 Dunkin Donuts drive thru on September 5th in the morning. When I got to the window, they said the person in front of me paid for me. That was a Livingston County Sheriff. Then I was there on September the 9th, the same thing happened. This time, it was someone from a local trucking company: Mat Trucking. Thank you to both! Bicyclists in [local town] seem to think stop signs and red lights don’t apply to them. They ride in the middle of the street, against traffic in the oncoming lane, and swerve back and forth or side to side. This makes it difficult for car drivers at an intersection to see you if you’re riding in the wrong lane or if switching puts you at an angle in my A-pillar blind spot. Stop being foolish. It is dangerous.

Seymour Library: Brockport’s Award-Winning Gem By Amanda Dudek Area, DeVuyst’s fun and spooky program in collaboration with the teens.
I
n honor of September, National Library Card Sign-up Month, we are taking a closer look at some of your favorite, local libraries!
Seymour Library is the award-winning, Brockport-based library which has embraced the challenge of serving three municipalities at once: Brockport, Clarkson and Sweden. This year, Seymour Library received the annual Library of the Year award from the Rochester Regional Library Council. “It is quite an honor,” said Seymour Library Adult Services Librarian, Abby DeVuyst. “All the libraries in Upstate New York are considered, and we won in the public libraries category, thanks to our wonderful patrons and the postcards they wrote in about why they love us and need us and about why we are important to them.”
Every program offered is free. “Nobody is charged for any kind of programming, which is wonderful,” said DeVuyst. “Everyone is welcome. We are an option for people who do not have the funds to go out. There are so many amazing things they can do here. This is a huge community service, and, while it may be forgotten sometimes, it shouldn’t be.” DeVuyst mentioned a wide variety of needful services the library provides from Alzheimer’s programs to help searching for employment to assistance signing up for health care. “This is so important to us because I think a lot of times, when people are doing well in life and they do not need our services, they forget about us, but we continue to help people from all walks of life,” she said.
The 53rd Annual RRLC Library of the Year Lunch and award ceremony took place on June 6th. “Several people complimented us on providing the level of service we do considering we serve three communities,” recalled DeVuyst. “That was really wonderful. It was a nice nod to the fact that we are relevant, utilized by the community and span the age spectrum. We are so proud and happy to be that source of community center our members are asking for.” Of course, being that center requires funding. In the past, Seymour Library had to shorten its open hours by two hours a day due to budget constraints. Thanks to a generous donation, this was reduced to a current decrease of one hour per day. “We will always do whatever we can to remain community and patron focused, providing the best service to everyone,” assured DeVuyst. One indicator of Seymour Library’s importance to its communities is its continued growth. Established in 1936 when it was donated by the Seymour family, the library outgrew its original Victorian home, and its much larger building was constructed at its current location on East Avenue in Brockport. Further expansions, such as the space which now serves as the History Room, were subsequently added. Even now, four study rooms are being built to provide quiet spaces for the community. “Libraries are no longer as quiet as they used to be,” explained DeVuyst. “They are vibrant hubs for the community.” In addition to its many useful and educational services, Seymour Library offers many enjoyable programs each month. “We have many new and different kinds of programs,” DeVuyst said. “Aside from local history, my arts, crafts and skill learning programs are the most popular. Our members are so open to expressing themselves artistically. That is what stands out to me the most: the talent and the creativity of the patrons we serve.” While Seymour Library provides many participation opportunities for children and adults, Abby DeVuyst pointed out its “huge, vibrant” teen population. “This is unusual for many libraries,” she said. “We have many teen volunteers, and during the summer months, many of them give up their time freely to help with children’s programming and around the library. In the fall, they start up groups, help in the library, do community service other activities. “Coming up in October, we will introduce Draw Down, a comprehensive plan created in a think tank by geniuses to address our global warming situation,” said DeVuyst. “I attended the program myself, and it was the first time I left such a seminar feeling hopeful.” October will also usher in Haunted Ghost Stories of the

Abby De Vuyst, Adult Services Librarian
To those looking to support Seymour Library or another local library, DeVuyst encourages, “Let your town supervisors and other elected officials know how important your library is to you, on the local level, in Albany and nationally. Let them know the community is invested in its library and is watching.” DeVuyst also invited everyone to, “Come and get a library card! We are the community, and we are here for you.” If you would like to see your library featured in one of our upcoming Hometown Stories, let us know at Hometown@gvpennysaver.com! Enjoy this article? ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An offer to help with a stalled project should reassure you that you have a workable plan in spite of the problems in getting it up and running. The week’s end brings more positive news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A past problem about a workplace situation re-emerges early in the week. Talking things out helps ease tensions by midweek, but some hurt feelings could linger a few more days. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Optimistic aspects dominate your efforts. However, expect to confront some criticism, some of which might be valid, so keep an open mind. But overall, it’s your views that will count. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Social interaction with new people, especially on the job, could be a bit strained in the early part of the week. But the awkwardness passes as you get to know each other better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Expect news about a follow-up to a workplace change that could make a difference in your career path. Meanwhile, new friends widen the circle for all you Social Lions who love to party. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Enjoy your well-earned plaudits for a job well done. But be aware that some people might not share your colleagues’ admiration, and you might have to work harder to win them over. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good week to recheck your probably already overlong “to do” list and decide what to keep and what to discard. Lose the clutter and focus your energy on what’s really important. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to take a new perspective on what you’ve been offered. Expanding your view could help to uncover any plusses or minuses that weren’t apparent at first. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Applying the usual methods to this week’s unique challenges might not work too well. Instead, use your creativity to find a way to resolve any impasse that develops. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) So what if fate throws some obstacles in your path this week? Just keep in mind that the sure-footed and resolute Goat can get past any barrier by focusing on the goals up ahead. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This week calls for better communication with people in both your private life and the workplace. Start by asking questions, and then pay close attention to the answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Potentially beneficial workplace changes could be closer than you realize. Make sure you know what’s going on so that you’re not left high and dry when the good things happen. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re not timid about pushing to have your aims realized once you’ve set your mind to accomplishing your goals.
Make fast snacks. Grilled cheese is not only a delicious comfort food that can be transformed into gourmet fare depending on the cheese used, but it’s also a relatively easy appetizer to make. Bake grilled cheese between two baking sheets in the oven. The bread will turn out crispy, the cheese perfectly melted, and you can make several at the same time. Cut into bitesized pieces and serve.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 25, 1970, ABC premieres “The Partridge Family,” which would become a smash hit. The group’s songs were not actually recorded by the five siblings and their mom in a garage, but were mostly the work professional musicians in Los Angeles.
Questions older drivers can ask themselves to see if it’s still safe to drive Men and women know that adjustments must be made as they get older. Athletes nearing their golden years may not be able to push themselves as hard at the gym as they once did. Professionals nearing retirement age might not be able to pull long hours at the office like they used to. But aging affects more than just work and play. As men and women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness and reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities. How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Association notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs and pedestrians, and handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems. Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination and flexibility can make it hard for aging men and women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal and difficulty turning the steering wheel. Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles. Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs and traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians. Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, and some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations. Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly. Do I drive with passengers? Drivers who routinely drive with passengers, especially young children, carry extra responsibility. As a result, such drivers owe it to themselves and their passengers to honestly assess their driving abilities. Various remedies can address age-related driving issues, and drivers should discuss them with their doctors the moment they feel as though their skills behind the wheel are starting to diminish. * On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens on Broadway. The show went on to an impressive maiden run of 732 performances. In 1961, a film version was an enormous hit and took home 10 Academy Awards. * On Sept. 28, 1066, claiming his right to the English throne, William, duke of Normandy, invades England. On Christmas Day, William the Conqueror was crowned the first Norman king of England. William I also is known for his “Domesday Book,” a great census of the lands and people of England.

585-343-5449 www.williamkentinc.com RESEARCH REVEALS RECYCLING IS INCREASINGLY POPULAR (NAPSI)—Here, for a change, is good news about the environment: Americans are recycling their food and beverage cartons more than ever and continue to look to brands to actively help drive the recycling of their products’ packages, according to a new survey. What The People Want The national study commissioned by the Carton Council of North America showed that 61 percent of respondents report they always recycle their food and beverage cartons, up 11 percentage points from when the survey was last conducted two years ago. Nearly all— 94 percent—think recycling is important and 74 percent believe recycling should be made a priority. People also have high environmental expectations for the brands they buy. Consumers overwhelmingly expect food and beverage brands to be committed to recycling. More than nine out of 10 said brands should take an active role in helping to increase the recycling of packages. And 56 percent said their loyalty to a food or beverage brand is affected by the brand’s engagement with environmental causes. How To Tell Whether Something Is Recyclable The survey showed that packaging remains the top source for determining recyclability, while friends and family as well as the news gained momentum. Nearly two-thirds of respondents said that if a package did not have a recycling symbol or language indicating the item is recyclable, they would assume it’s not.

One help is that now food and beverage cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo. The ability to use the label is based on the milestone that more than 60 percent of U.S. households have access to carton recycling, a threshold set by the Federal Trade Commission green guidelines for packaging.

“The survey findings highlight that as more Americans have gained access to food and beverage carton recycling, awareness that cartons are recyclable has also increased,” explained Jason Pelz, vice president of recycling projects for the Carton Council of North America and circular economy director for Tetra Pak. The Carton Council works to deliver longterm collaborative solutions to divert valuable cartons from the landfill. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET
Magic Maze
(NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority.
GOT WORDS?
1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself. Just after the death of the flowers, And before they are buried in snow, There comes a festival season,

CRUISING TIPS AND TRICKS: Research the ships, and not just the cruise lines. Cruise lines each offer their own amenities and are known for certain features. One cruise line may be a better match for young singles, while others may cater to families. In addition, certain ships may have their own special features such as water slides, athletic events, casinos, and more. Choose a ship that meets your needs.
That rivals the brightness of spring, Aglow with a beauty more tender Than aught which fair summer could bring.... ~Emeline B. Smith, “Indian Summer”
It’s September, and that nip in the evening air leaves no doubt that fall is on its way. What do you most look forward to each autumn? • Pumpkin spice • Back-to-school • Beautiful colors • Pumpkin carving • Apple picking • Fall festivals • I don’t like it. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

died on the way to the hospital. They worked on him for a long time but could not revive him. They didn’t do an autopsy, and they declared his death as “atherosclerotic vascular disease.” He was 79 years old and had no health problems. He came into the house and said that something was in his throat and he couldn’t swallow. He tried to cough it up, but nothing came up. He then collapsed. He had no pain. I am still puzzled by that symptom of a heart attack. Have you ever heard of that? I am really curious and still in shock. I hope you can explain. -- T.S. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I think he likely did have a heart attack, which is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Although many people have symptoms of heart disease that they ignore, some people have no symptoms until sudden death. Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol plaque and calcium in the blood vessels of the heart, almost always is present in people with a heart attack. The initial symptom of a heart attack varies widely. Throat discomfort is not rare. Cough is a common symptom, as the heart becomes damaged and the pressure in the lungs increases. The classic symptom of chest pain certainly does happen, but there are many variations. Both men and women can have atypical presentations. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Parkinson’s disease. He also has a stent in his heart. We have been to many doctors to address a breathing problem: fast breathing. He experiences this daily, and we are told that it is anxiety. It is difficult to watch him go through this. It sometimes happens before he is due for his Sinemet, but other times right after taking it. He has been prescribed Xanax, clonidine, cannabidiol-infused gummies and a few others. One doctor says it is from Parkinson’s, but the rest say it is anxiety. -- E.W. ANSWER: Shortness of breath can have many causes, but someone with Parkinson’s disease has an unusual possibility, called “respiratory dyskinesia” (which just means “abnormal movement of the muscles of breathing”). This is an involuntary rapid breathing that causes distress, and it usually happens an hour after taking a medication like Sinemet. Changing the dose can help with diagnosis, and working with a neurologist to adjust the dose of the Sinemet (which comes in fast-acting and slowrelease formulations) can solve the problem. I would start with an expert on Parkinson’s. Keeping a diary of when he takes his medication and when the breathing trouble starts and stops will be helpful, as would a video of what it looks like when happening. Having Parkinson’s doesn’t make someone less likely to have other causes of shortness of breath, and anyone with a stent in the heart (meaning a history of blockages of at least one heart artery) is at risk of developing further blockages. Poor blood flow to the heart is another potential cause. Get the Parkinson’s evaluation first. I would not recommend anti-anxiety medications unless there is clear evidence of benefit. Ascribing a physical symptom like shortness of breath to anxiety without a thorough workup is unwise. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HELP WANTED
Bus Drivers & Bus Attendants
Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
Complete training provided.
