Shop Smart for Mother’s Day Do some sleuthing. Play detective and take inventory of what Mom likes to do the most. If you ask your mother what she wants, she will likely brush off the question and tell you nothing. It is up to you to do the investigative work. Pay attention to conversations and see if there is anything she mentions wanting to try or something around the house that may need updating. Practical gifts are less likely to end up unopened in the basement or attic.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 10 The Genesee Valley Penny Saver Creative Department … . . . imaginative, innovative and artistic! What would our Penny Savers be without these talented people who can take a few words scribbled on a piece of paper and turn it into a work of art suitable for printing! Our Creative Department consists of 16 talented graphic designers including our Creative Director Cristie Leone who has been with our company for 33 years, and has supervised this department for the last 12. The evolution of technology in printing is no more apparent than in our Creative Department. In 1948 composing ads was an arduous task. As mentioned in previous series, the varityper and headliner were crucial for the production of weekly ads. These gave way to the compugraphic typesetter, and in 1985, the introduction of the Macintosh computer in our Creative department was a wonder to behold. With a screen that was 9”, the Macintosh (128k) was the first relatively inexpensive computer to use a graphical user interface, and true WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) picture, all of which are taken for granted today. This computer allowed the designer to actually see their layout on the screen instead of strips of text that needed to be printed out, waxed and adhered to a layout sheet. Artwork could be scanned in and placed in the ad. This technology also hastened the departure of the dark room. Around this time, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver took an increased interest in what it takes to create effective advertising. True principles of advertising and design became a focus. A job that was once considered strictly typesetting had evolved into a graphic design position. In the past two decades we’ve embraced all things digital, from ad creation, to page creation and output, and finally to plates ready for the press. Programs that log and track ads from billing, through sales and into the creative department have made for a streamlined process. Today the Creative Department consists of talented graphic designers, paginators, and an outstanding proofing department headed up by Carole Bennett. Along with ads for our weekly Penny Saver, all work for Penny Lane Printing and Penny Lane Promotional Products flows through this department.

The recognition that we receive from the Free Community Papers of New York (FCPNY) and the Association of Free Community Papers (AFCP) each year confirms our belief that we have one of the best papers around. The award for General Excellence graces our office each and every year and is something that our Creative department strives for annually. Recently the task that the Creative Department has undertaken is the transformation of our logo and masthead and can be seen here, with a few examples of our Penny Saver, then and now.

Family owned and operated since 1948 …stay tuned for volume 11 next month

The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Jerking Legs That Shake the Bed --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband will be 82 in July. About three years ago, I became aware of his sudden movements during the night. We were renting in Florida, and the bed was smaller than our bed at home. His body would jerk, sometimes strongly. These movements would not wake him; he just seemed asleep. He does not remember anything about it in the morning. We went to see his doctor at home, who said that he is in very good shape. He did not know what caused the movements. We are once again staying in Florida, and his body movements are the same, sometimes strong enough to shake the bed. I find it hard to believe that this is normal. Do you have any advice? -- B.N.S. ANSWER: This is a classic description of a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. These usually involve the legs, and typically involve pointing the toe while flexing the ankle, knee and sometimes the hip. Each movement lasts a few seconds and repeats every 30 seconds or so. Your story that he doesn’t remember them is very typical: It’s usually the sleeping partner who notices them. PLMS is more common in older adults. PLMS by itself is not a disease and does not need treatment; however, it is often associated with other conditions, especially restless leg syndrome (Willis-Ekbom disease), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (which includes sometimes violent movements) and narcolepsy. Since your husband apparently has no symptoms, he does not need treatment. However, he should be specifically asked about symptoms like an urge to move the legs while awake, abnormal feelings in the legs, difficulty falling asleep and sleepiness during the day. These would be likely to indicate RLS or its close relative, periodic limb movement disorder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What can an 80-year-old woman expect to have checked as part of an annual physical examination? -- H.M. ANSWER: The annual physical exam has gotten some bad press lately. Some of it is well-deserved: The actual physical exam occasionally finds some unsuspected problems, but this is quite uncommon and there is no proof that the annual physical saves lives. This argument misses the point, in my opinion. The “annual physical” is a scheduled time for important conversations about screening and prevention. These include checking blood pressure and considering cholesterol screening (cholesterol is a lessimportant risk factor in 80-year-old women than it is in men or in younger adults). Similarly, it’s time to come to a mutual decision on whether a mammogram should be done (again, the evidence at age 80 is unclear). Most importantly, your doctor or provider should be doing a depression screen, thinking about ways to reduce fall risk, assessing osteoporosis and giving good advice on diet and exercise. People at high risk may need other labs checked or advice given (for example, people with high blood pressure should be screened for diabetes). It’s a long list, and that’s why a dedicated visit for health promotion makes sense to me. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Your Tips to improve memory Forgetfulness can affect anyone. For example, few, if any, adults can say they have not experienced moments when they could not find their keys. And once the keys are found, people move on without giving much thought to why they did not immediately remember where they left their keys. Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of age-related changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older. • Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish and little alcohol and red meat Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General thinking skills. VICTOR - On Thursday, May 10th at 7:15 pm at a special ceremony during the Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting, a well-respected local educator and leader in the fight against childhood lead poisoning, Dr. Ralph Spezio (VCS Class of 1965) will be recognized as Victor Central Schools’ 2018 Graduate of Distinction. The Graduates of Distinction program was initiated in 2002 as a way to recognize VCS alumni who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and made significant contributions to society. Ralph Neil Spezio, Ed.D. served for 33 years in the Rochester City School District as teacher, curriculum specialist, vice principal, and principal. As principal of Enrico Fermi School No. 17, a large urban elementary school in the heart of Rochester’s ‘poverty crescent,’ Dr. Spezio initiated wide-ranging partnerships and ground-breaking programs to improve the health and well-being of students and the entire community. For example, in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital, he raised $1.2 million in private money, and built the only school/community medical center of its kind in New York State. Building on this success, Dr. Spezio raised another $1 million and doubled the size of the health center to include a full-service dental facility operated by Strong’s Eastman Dental Center. This health/dental center is open to the entire community with a full sliding-scale system so no one is turned away. Because there was no pre-kindergarten program at School No. 17, Dr. Spezio formed a partnership with Kodak, and using Edison Tech students, built a facility that now houses a Montessori pre-school. This program was the first in Rochester to be located in a public school and was the only public school at that time to have received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Dr. Spezio created an authentic neighborhood/community school and with it, a vibrant Parent/Teacher PTA was formed and sustained during his tenure as principal. Dr. Spezio has received numerous awards for entrepreneurial leadership and community service, including citations from parent and community groups, professional associations, business associations, and local and state government leaders. While principal of School No.17, Dr. Spezio was a founding member of the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning in Monroe County, New York. The work of this coalition recently earned the EPA’s Environmental Justice Achievement Award and the

Dr. Ralph N. Spezio Rochester Area Community Foundation’s AmesAmzalak Award for Nonprofit Excellence. Upon retiring as principal, Dr. Spezio served eight years as Senior Associate/Community Liaison in the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Community and Preventive Medicine. In May 2011, he received his doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Rochester, Warner School. In 2013, Dr. Spezio was asked to come out of retirement to lead School 17 again as Principal in order to remove the State Priority School Status currently held by that school. He recently was awarded the EPA’s National Environmental Quality Award for his groundbreaking work to eliminate childhood lead poisoning. VCS alumnae and former classmate, Anita Owens-Boulger, said she nominated Dr. Spezio for this esteemed award because his life has been filled with so many extraordinary achievements. “Ralph put himself through college to reach the level of doctorate in education. He was a demonstration teacher, curriculum specialist, vice principal and principal in one of the most challenged and highest poverty-stricken schools in the City of Rochester. I have known Ralph since grade school in the Victor Schools and can say that he has been consistent in his passion to help children to achieve a healthy and successful future. He is a powerful inspiration and a credit to all the values that the Victor Central School District holds dear.” For more information, please contact the Victor Office of School and Community Relations at 9243252, ext. 1407.

Just a note of appreciation to the wonderful folks who spend hours volunteering their time to take care of donations on behalf of libraries. Few understand what backbreaking work is involved and the level of expertise necessary to evaluate items properly. Some libraries use the items to supply their shelves; others hold book sales to raise money for materials and programs. Others collect for global destinations in dire need or little pop up libraries their home towns. Books are a precious commodity and we are all lucky to have devoted volunteers willing to spend their time evaluating items that still have usefulness and worth. Thanks to all the Friends of Libraries! Many small town libraries no longer accept any donations,

The weekly food giveaway in a local town is disgraceful. The director allows patrons to have one item per person (even when the organization has an overabundance of food) yet volunteers take three or four of the same item for themselves. The volunteers are downright rude to the patrons, refusing to answer when asked a question or say "You're welcome"

or host book sales due to lack of volunteers, storage space and other considerations. Here in Avon we are especially blessed to be able to continue our annual book sale tradition with the support of our local Rotary's Corn Festival. The library has first dibs on gently used, current donations. Any donated book added directly to the collection saves money, and ensures everyone gets to enjoy it. After that, The Friends of the Avon Free Library take over. We sort/ clean/store the books that come in year round. Anything that is ripped/dirty/moldy/out of date or unsaleable is recycled though our friends at the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. We work hard to maintain a zero waste philosophy. Between the sale and our outreach programs we move over

5000 books a year back into our community. We welcome new volunteers and members. Please e-mail books4AvonFriends@yahoo.com or check the library for information. You may also LIKE us on Facebook!

when thanked, and loudly gossiping about patrons (who are within earshot!). It seems odd to me that an organization whose primary purpose is to distribute food to the needy limits them so severely while being generous to itself. The behavior it exhibits is in no way altruistic.

animal they shot. This time of year it's all about killing coyotes so there will be more deer to hunt next year. As an animal lover I find it offensive and wrong. If they were talking about killing a dog, would you say "Mind your own business?" I doubt it. Save that talk for the gun club please.

To the person who said "Mind your own business" in response to a vent about inappropriate conversation about hunting: It isn't always possible to MYOB, especially when people are disrespectful and loud. I am constantly surrounded by hunting talk at work where you can't just shut it off or get up and move. Most people don't hunt but hunters I work with are always talking about the size of their trophy or how they followed a blood trail for hours, or what their "broad head" did to the

who lie there cry out for justice. To the family of four/with two children who ate at a restaurant, and then walked out without paying....WOW!! What makes you think that you are so special that you can eat for FREE? Plus, you got a free dessert because it was your birthday. You make it bad for others when prices have to soar to compensate for people such as yourself who think that they can just go into a restaurant and have someone serve them and then just waltz out of there without any regard. What an example for your young ones (preteen) who observed you. TREAT others as you would like to be treated. I would think that you would appreciate the value of those wise words. Isn't that what everyone seems to be campaigning for????

THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Taking advice isn’t always easy for self-assured Rams and Ewes who think they know what’s best. But it wouldn’t hurt to listen to what close colleagues have to say. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You know how to balance life’s practical aspects with the poetic. This gives you a special edge this week in both your professional endeavors and your personal life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Focus on keeping a balance between your home-related activities and your workplace responsibilities. Be mindful of both without obsessing over one or the other. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A change in plans is likely as you discover more facts about a possible commitment. Continue to ask questions and, if you’re not sure about the answers, demand proof. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Be careful not to let that Leonine pride keep you from seeking wise, experienced counsel before making an important decision. A family member once again seeks your help. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That surge of Virgo energy drives you to take on more work assignments. Be careful you don’t overdo it, or you might find yourself overdone: i.e., burned out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your decision to be upfront with colleagues on a touchy matter causes some consternation at first. But in the end, your honesty wins their trust and admiration. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As in the past, someone again wants to share a secret with you, knowing it will be safe. But do you really want to be this person’s confidante? Think about it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As one of nature’s straight shooters, you seek to correct misconceptions about a project. Do so, of course, but without giving away too much too soon. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Creative pursuits continue to be strong in the gifted Goat’s aspect. New friendships can come from sharing these experiences with like-minded art aficionados. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Resolve lingering grumblings over your way of doing things by keeping your mind open to suggestions while continuing to show how your plans will work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The perceptive Piscean might find that changing course in midstream isn’t as workable as it would seem. Explore this option carefully before making a decision. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to share your love of life’s good things brings joy to many, including, of course, yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

STEPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.
