Fresh hardwood mulch for the paths Cardboard, compost and spoiled hay from a local farm for the initial mulching and covering of the hill side. Make sure to test the compost and hay for chemicals such as Grazon before buying it. This chemical stunts and kills broad leaf plants and leaves grasses.
Locate a place for leaf collection and begin collecting leaf bags from the neighborhood. This will decompose and make leaf mold, used to amend, primarily the vegetable garden, but also all gardens if there is enough. This can be as simple as a contained pile within a circular, wire corral, 6 feet in diameter. Test the sub soil for pH and amend appropriate to the location of plants on the plan. Blueberries in particular need a low pH between 4.5 and 5.5 while most other plants prefer to live in the range of 6 to 7. Phase 2 - Late fall and winter Plant perennial trees and shrubs in the Fall or early Spring, making sure to amend the soil deeply in a 2-3 foot diameter around the new plant. Develop the vegetable garden plot by adding compost, worm castings, kelp meal, and lime. Mulch with a thick layer of leaf mold from your leaf pile. Leaf mold will develop faster on the bottom of the pile so it is best to have 2 corrals: 1 to add to and one to take from.
Biomass producers Mustard - Spring annual Buckwheat - Summer annual Clover - Fall reseeding annual/perennial Winter rye - Fall annual Winter pea - Fall annual Sorghum - Summer annual
Phase 3 - Spring Install the arbor and plant perennial flowers in the flower beds. Mulch flower beds with leaf mold or bark mulch and do not replant cover crop. Plant summer cover crop and maintain such that it does not compeet with the perennial trees and shrubs planted in the fall.
