We recommend removing the large sweetgum as it shades half of the front of the house currently. This proves a problem for a balanced garden design on either side of the front entrance. You can keep or tear out the existing liriope from the border of the garden beds. If you tear it out, you can increase the number of perennial flowers in the front of each bed. We recommend keeping the existing line of edging in order to keep the grass out of the garden beds. We recommend mulching with pine straw or wood chip mulch around the Japanese Maple to help protect the roots from damage.
