BARTON FAIR SHARE ALLEY GREENING PROJECT PROJECT DESCRIPTION An alleyway greening competition that gave residents the opportunity to come together with their neighbours to plan and implement improvements to their alleys with support from Groundwork.

GROUNDWORK CASE STUDY PROJECT SUMMARY Barton Alleyway greening project was designed to improve the appearance of back alleys, promote their positive use and encourage neighbours to come together to achieve the transformation. Groups have residents had the opportunity to secure up to £5,000 for improvements to their alleyways. The project aimed to: f Involve residents in consulting their neighbours about changes they would like to make to their alley and the reasons why

f Engage the residents in the design process to ensure the final designs of the alleys meet the needs of all residents f Provide practical and accessible opportunities for residents to learn the basic skills required to care for their alleyway gardens f Raise residents awareness of the benefits of organic gardening and climate change and their role in this.

f Publicising and launching the project in the community through a series of workshops and public meetings f Liasing with local partners to ensure the project had support during delivery and post project f Supporting core residents throughout the project to help them involve the wider community Training f Training residents in basic involvement techniques f Involving residents in the design process and teaching them the fundamental principles of how to change physical spaces f Increasing awareness of sustainability, climate change and sustainable gardening practices f Developing fundraising skills through the funding competition f Provision of basic gardening workshops in 4 alley ways, open to all residents in the area
