DIRECTOR’S LETTER

TRY IT, YOU’LL LIKE IT

A

t Christmas when you put on a Santa hat does it make you feel silly or does it get you in the mood for the holidays? Does it put a smile on your face when a child or an adult points at you and smiles and giggles? I find this true not only at Christmas but at any time of year when I put on one of my “crazy” hats. I remember going into a Chapter gathering and seeing the Chapter Director in a silly hat and I just knew it was going to be a fun time for all in attendance! Why am I writing about this now? At Wing Ding, we have a Crazy Hat Contest and trust me, it’s all kinds of FUN! We have seen hats that are store bought and then embellished or hats that are handmade. We’ve seen everything from a hard hat to an Easter bonnet. Some told a story, others were pretty, some were patriotic and some were just very funny! Sandi and I find it very enjoyable to wear our hats at any time during an event and as many of you know, we wear them often. It takes a large suitcase just to bring the hats to Wing Ding! So what does this have to do with you? I would like to challenge you to bring and wear your crazy hat during Wing Ding this year. Show up and wear your hat during Wing Ding, get my attention, I’ll be easy to spot each day with one of my crazy hats on, and I will have a special, one-of-a-kind reward for everyone making the effort! Finding me will be particularly easy on Friday, Sept. 4 at 12:30 p.m. in the East Hall during the Crazy Hat Contest! I would love to see at least one from each District and the more the merrier. Will you be your District’s representative? There are simple rules according to Ray and here they are: Crazy Hat Rules 1. Categories – One category for all 2. Class – Individual 3. Winners for first, second and third place 4. Judging – Applause from the audience Mascot Contest 1. Categories – Original and humorous 2. Class – Individual, Chapter 3. Winners – First and second place in each class 4. Judging by preselected judges

012

Speaking of patriotic hats, don’t forget to bring them and any other patriotic gear to Wing Ding this year. As a matter of fact, let’s see how many different countries we can get represented. As you create your packing list don’t forget your mascot. The Mascot Contest is at the same time as the Crazy Hat Contest so you can be involved with both at the same time. This can be your personal mascot, Chapter mascot or even a District or Region mascot. We have made the rules simpler for the mascots as well, so bring them ready and display their finest or funniest wears. Mascots are of great pride to you or your Chapter, District or Region, so come and share that pride with your GWRRA family and friends. We look forward to seeing you this year at Wing Ding in Huntsville with your crazy hat and mascot! RAY AND SANDI GARRIS Your Directors of GWRRA

SOMETHING OLD SOMETHING NEW

O

ur August issue is about great memories. We highlight GL1200 Gold Wings and older. This issue was popular in 2014 and is sure to be again this year. We received some amazing photos and stories from Members about their “old school” Wings that you can find in Readers’ Rides and elsewhere. Thanks to everyone who sent us their contributions. Thanks also to photographer and GWRRA Member Gary Brown and Wing World’s Senior Technical Editor Stu Oltman. Gary photographed Stu’s GL1000 recently in Papago Park, here in Phoenix, for our cover. Stu’s bike has original paint and parts and is simply phenomenal. We hope you like his old Wing on the stage of Brown’s artistic sensibilities. Brown specializes in infrared and black and white photography. Visit his website at www.garyallenbrownphoto.com. We also have an article from new Member John Rybacki II who rides a GL1200 Interstate. The boyfriend of our Sales

014

Executive Ariella Price, the young couple recently took a trip from Phoenix to Los Angeles. John invites us into the adventure in this month’s issue. Also, meet two longtime Members who have both been riding for over half a century – Michael Tucker and Larry Cole. They have shared not only pictures of their past rides but their memories. There’s much to learn from our shared stories, old and new. Speaking of old stories, I hope you enjoyed the article in June’s issue about Phil Steiner written by Kenton Kloos. There were two misprints in that article. Kenton’s last name is Kloos – and second, Phil changes his spark plugs every 100,000 miles, not 10,000 miles. While speaking with Kenton, he shared a good idea that I pass on to you. If you have ridden more miles than Phil on your Wing, which is 539,774 miles in case you missed it, send us a photo of your bike and odometer. We’d like to share that with other Members. If you think your mileage is high for your 1200, 1500 or 1800, send it in. If we get enough submissions for each model, we’ll start a mileage bragging corner. If we don’t get enough, we’ll use your photo in Readers’ Rides instead. In closing, the 1800s English rhyme, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe,” was inspiration for the title of this Editor’s Letter. You probably know the ditty well. Did you know that “something old” represents continuity and “something new” symbolizes optimism for the future? I’ll leave you with that and a figurative silver sixpence for your shoe. That’s a wish for good fortune. ANITA STIENSTRA Editor in Chief editor@gwrra.org

QUICK HITS This is where you’ll find articles, product reviews and other miscellaneous goodies that aren’t long enough to stand alone, but deserve a place in the book. If you have future submissions to this section, please send them to editor@gwrra.org with the subject line “Quick Hits.” NEWS CHAPTER O TURNS 25 Missouri Chapter O celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Chapter O was established in 1990 by 10 couples from Chapter A after the growth of GWRRA Members in the St. Louis area. Chapter A, which began in 1986, was spawned by Chapter C, which started in 1985. During Chapter O’s first year, they visited the Missouri State Rally in Hannibal, attended “Indiana Spring Wing Warmup” in Vincennes, Indiana, South Central Region H Rally in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Illinois State Rally in August. They also had an Observation Run and

Poker Run, which grew the Chapter quickly. Chapter O sponsored the first 2-Up ERC class in the state of Missouri. Instructors were Bob and Glinda Carter and Fred and Linda Wissen. Jerry Rothermich, Rider Ed

CLARIFICATION

CORRECTION

In June’s article “Part II, Motorcycle Tires: A primer for the layperson,” a line in the article states, “Not only that, but the folks who install tires at these events aren’t necessarily familiar with your Gold Wing’s maintenance procedures and specifications. At rally’s end, they evaporate into thin air, leaving customers unlucky enough to have installation issues twisting in the wind.” GWRRA recommends that if you bring your bike to a rally, remember to research the company providing service on your bike. GWRRA emphasizes that it makes sure to have reputable vendors at all its events and that they are there to provide the best service they can to you.

In the June 2015 issue, we listed the last name of the author of “Just Past the Moon: Phil Steiner loves to ride and his mileage is proof,” as Kenton Loos. Kenton’s last name is spelled incorrectly. It should be Kenton Kloos. Also in that article, it was noted that Phil Steiner changed his spark plugs every 10,000 miles, but it should be 100,000 miles. Wing World apologizes for the errors.

at the time, gets credit for putting it together. The Chapter celebrates the milestone with a ride to Mountain Home, Arkansas, that they call “Roller Ride,” named for a stretch of Highway 19 that looks like a roller coaster.

Congratulations to Garland Callahan, GWRRA #060659, of Anderson, South Carolina, winner of June’s Where’s Wingy contest. Wingy is located in June’s issue on page 52 in the top right picture on the man’s hat.

Urgent: Special Summer Driving Notice

To some, sunglasses are a fashion accessory…

But When Driving, These Sunglasses May Save Your Life!

Studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that most (74%) of the crashes occurred on clear, sunny days

Drivers’ Alert: Driving can expose you to more dangerous glare than any sunny day at the beach can… do you know how to protect yourself?

T

he sun rises and sets at peak travel periods, during the early morning and afternoon rush hours and many drivers find themselves temporarily blinded while driving directly into the glare of the sun. Deadly accidents are regularly caused by such blinding glare with danger arising from reflected light off another vehicle, the pavement, or even from waxed and oily windshields that can make matters worse. Early morning dew can exacerbate this situation. Yet, motorists struggle on despite being blinded by the sun’s glare that can cause countless accidents every year. Not all sunglasses are created equal. Protecting your eyes is serious business. With all the fancy fashion frames out there it can be easy to overlook what really matters––the lenses. So we did our research and looked to the very best in optic innovation and technology. Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist. A NASA rocket scientist. Some ordinary sunglasses can obscure your vision by exposing your eyes to harmful UV rays, blue light, and reflective glare. They can also darken useful vision-enhancing light. But now, independent research conducted by scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has brought forth ground-breaking technology to help protect human eyesight from the harmful effects of

Eagle Eyes® Lens

simulation

Slip on a pair of Eagle Eyes® and everything instantly appears more vivid and sharp. You’ll immediately notice that your eyes are more comfortable and relaxed and you’ll feel no need to squint. The scientifically designed sunglasses are not just fashion accessories— they are necessary to protect your eyes from those harmful rays produced by the sun during peak driving times.

solar radiation light. This superior lens technology was first discovered when NASA scientists looked to nature for a means to superior eye protection— specifically, by studying the eyes of eagles, known for their extreme visual acuity. This discovery resulted in what is now known as Eagle Eyes®. The Only Sunglass Technology Certified by the Space Foundation for UV and BlueLight Eye Protection. Eagle Eyes® features the most advanced eye protection technology ever created. The TriLenium® Lens Technology offers triple-filter polarization to block 99.9% UVA and UVB—plus the added benefit of blue-light eye protection. RIDER’S ED

PRACTICING FOR PARKING LOT PRACTICE BY JIM GRAYBEAL INTRO BY RAY AND SANDI GARRIS, YOUR DIRECTORS OF GWRRA

We asked Jim to help out with a few valuable hints on how to enjoy our “sport” of riding our motorcycles even better. Jim brings to the table 49 years of riding experience, MSF Instruction, Drill Team Captain for 10 years, riding on Drill Teams for 30 years, Master Tour Rider #3011, Red Hat Member #19, and he introduced the Amazing Team Challenge to GWRRA and wrote the first draft of the Parking Lot Practice Manual in his spare time. He also served as the National Director of Drill Teams (the first time) for 10 years. Thank you Jim, for your many contributions to GWRRA. We personally appreciate all your coaching and mentoring on the Arizona Precision Motorcycle Drill Team.

S

everal years ago in collaboration with Nick Hoppner, a former editor of Wing World, we wrote some articles based on the old pamphlet, Parking Lot Practice, from which the current PLP program is based, with a lot of changes and additions. The old book was easy to follow, but left the rider wide open to developing bad habits because the exercises allowed the rider to be “self-taught.” The present PLP program, though it does not allow instruction or coaching, makes good use of “facilitators’” who explain the exercise, demonstrate the exercise, read the important information to the rider from the book and are able to add reminders and answer questions from the book only. This puts the full responsibility for learning directly upon the rider. Bad habits, should they exist, can be addressed through practice, practice and more practice – and by referring to the book. My goal in this series, featuring one or two exercises each month, is to offer some extra insight on each. This may be directly related to the

020

exercise, or parallel to it, or make no sense at all. And, most of my examples will not directly relate to the book, but on the material collected leading up to it. I will be explaining what I do – the what, when, where, how and why – to the best of my ability. It will then be your responsibility to repeat that to the best of your ability. Each article is meant to be a learning opportunity for you. We will be concentrating on basics. Without understanding the combined basics of both you and the motorcycle and how you act and interact together, advancement will become more and more difficult. And, guess what the key to advancement could be? – practice, practice, practice. But that is not such a bad thing, because you do not have to practice all the time – only when you are on the bike, alone or with someone. The first installment next month will involve braking and stopping. That is the single most important knowledge necessary for safe riding according to the “Hurt Report” on motorcycle crashes, studied and published in 1981. Two of the main reasons for single vehicle (motorcycle) crashes were improper braking and improper turning. By the way, that is your assignment for the next month: Google “Hurt Report Summary” and be amazed. Now I’m sounding too much like a professor. I’m just a person who loves to ride, has some experience and just enough knowledge to be dangerous, but willing to share what little I know if it will help anyone to become a better, safer rider.

Graybeal, GWRRA Life Member #094076 and a Member for 21 years, is National Director of Drill Teams and Riding Excellence. He bought his first Gold Wing in 1982.

And 20 years ago, back in 1995, Honda was marking another Gold Wing anniversary (do the math): the GL’s 20th. First, let’s open a time capsule: In 1995, gasoline was $1.09 a gallon, the Dow Jones closed at just over 5100 points (it’s about 18,000 today), and the average new home cost $113,150. Forrest Gump won the Oscar for best picture, and the O.J. Simpson trial was in full swing. Honda had introduced the new GL1500 Gold Wing

seven years earlier, in model-year 1988. And what a radical machine that was. At the time, many riders just called it “the six.” Sixcylinder motorcycles had been rarities up until now, although Honda had previously produced two worldfamous sixes: the RC166 250cc roadracer (and world champion), and the equally outrageous CBX, a 1000cc machine made from 1978 until 1982. Both were highperformance, inline, air-cooled designs. Even today, the RC166 is pure magic to hear, and the CBX is a terrific

COUPLE OF THE YEAR PROGRAM

T

his is the third part of a three-part introduction to couples vying for International Couple of the Year, of which selection will take place at Wing Ding 37 in Huntsville, Alabama. Tommy and Gayle Wilson, Assistant Directors Membership Enhancement Program – Couple of the Year, contacted new Region Couples and asked each to submit a short biography of themselves and their time in GWRRA for Wing World magazine.

REGION K – FRANCOIS AND CHANTAL SEGUIN Bonjour, we are Francois and Chantal Séguin and here are a few things about us as Region K 2014-2015 Couple of the Year. For starters, we have been happily married for 25 years in June 2015. We also have two lovely children Jessica, 23, and Jean-Francois, 20. Francois was born and raised on a dairy farm and now works for Can West Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI), which is an organization that helps to manage dairy herds all over Canada. Chantal was born and raised in a grocery store/restaurant/gas station, and is now working as an IT manager for Promaxis Systems Inc. Promaxis offers professional engineering services to the Department of National Defense. Francois has been driving motorcycles since he was 12. This was a much faster way to go get the cows for milking. From there, he went on to driving several street bikes, all Hondas. Today he is the proud owner of a 2013 Gold Wing F6B. Chantal’s love for driving motorcycles started with her love for Francois. He taught her how to drive a motorcycle and sent her into the fields to go get the cows with it. When she became a better rider, Chantal bought several Honda street bikes as well. She is now a proud owner of a 2013 Gold Wing F6B.

024

We joined GWRRA in 2005 and enjoyed everything we had the privilege to do, from Newsletter Editor, to Secretary, to Chapter Director. We also enjoy giving seminars REGION K – FRANCOIS AND CHANTAL SEGUIN as University Trainers for Rider Education, Leadership Training and Membership Enhancement. We have also helped with the creation of the F&B Drill Team. We are both participants and enjoy it every moment. Francois and Chantal are both Master Riders and have traveled many miles over the years, which was not easy considering that in Curran, Ontario, Canada we only get six to seven months of riding time. We love to meet as many people as we can and hope to get to meet as many of you as possible at Wing Ding. So if you see us, please stop us and say, “Hi.” We would like to get to know you!

REGION L – DAVID AND SHEILA LEVY David and Sheila have been married for 40 years and are the parents of two grown sons who are now married and living five minutes away. They also have three beautiful granddaughters who are the light of their lives. Both

were born in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Having lived their lives in that area, they are proud of their province and region and are pleased to represent the area to the rest of the GWRRA family. REGION L – DAVID AND SHEILA LEVY David has been interested in motorcycles since childhood and has owned a number of bikes through the years including three Gold Wings. Sheila has also been interested in motorcycles and the guys who ride them from an early age and enjoys riding as co-rider. They have traveled throughout Atlantic Canada and the Eastern Seaboard area of the USA and are looking forward to the journey to Alabama this fall. They have been Members of GWRRA since 2006 and have held a number of offices within the local Chapter and Region and enjoy the friendships that have developed within the organization. David is now self-employed after a career with the local telephone company and is looking forward to complete retirement with more time to ride. Sheila is now retired after a career with the telephone company and further with the local Divinity College and is enjoying having more leisure time to spend on her hobbies – genealogy research and photography, as well as being free to ride when the opportunity is there. REGION N – GLENN AND NANETTE MIZNER We are Glenn and Nanette Mizner. We are from GWRRA Virginia Chapter B, Virginia Beach, and we are proud to be the GWRRA Region N Couple of the Year for 2014-2015. We both grew up in Warren, Ohio. Glenn joined the Navy in 1979 while Nanette was still in school. We met through a mutual friend in August 1981 and were married just 10 months later. We moved to

Norfolk, Virginia, immediately after our Niagara Falls honeymoon. We are fortunate enough to have lived in the Hampton Roads area ever since. We have two grown children, Tiffany and Nathan. We have a son-in- REGION N – GLENN AND NANETTE MIZNER law, Tiffany’s husband, Josh Panko, who is great, two dogs, and one grand-dog. Glenn retired after serving in the Navy for 22 years and currently works as a Technical Writer. Nanette has held various jobs over the years, but has settled at Plaza Middle School as a Teacher’s Assistant in the Special Education Department for the past 14 years. In 2005, we bought a 1985 Aspencade and rode around southeastern Virginia and North Carolina for several years, never going more than a 100 miles or so in a day. In June 2011, we purchased a pretty 2008 Cabernet Red GL1800. We immediately joined GWRRA and Virginia Chapter B and have not looked back. In just three and a half years, we have ridden well over 50,000 miles. We received our Level IV in September 2013 and we are strong supporters of the Levels Program. We have had a blast riding with our GWRRA friends, camping and enjoying Chapter and District events across Region N. We currently serve as Virginia District Membership Enhancement Coordinators and Chapter B MEC. We have served as Ride Coordinators and Glenn was Newsletter Editor for three years for Chapter B. Glenn is a University Trainer in Rider Education and Membership Enhancement and has developed two GWRRA membership seminars. Nanette is planning to attend the University Trainer Development Program class soon. It has been a great journey from Chapter Couple to Region Couple and we look forward to meeting and making friends wherever we go. We look forward to representing Region N and having a blast over the next year. WINGWORLDMAG.COM

e’d like to introduce you to Harry “F”un Bear. We know many Chapters have mascots and many Districts have fun and games for stealing mascots. Well, let me tell you about who Harry is and how much FUN he is having. JR and I were shopping for Christmas in 2010 and there was a large teddy bear for sale. JR said he had to have it and we would make it the Region “F”un mascot. With that, Harry came home with us. After getting properly dressed, he was introduced at the Region “F”un Officer Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada. To say that the Districts decided to play and steal the mascot instantly was an understatement. New Mexico got a jump on

everyone and kidnapped Harry. Harry was off on a FUN adventure in Las Vegas. This goes to show that not everything “stays in Vegas”! Harry made the rounds but he came home in time for the Region “F”un rally in St. George, Utah, where he again became the center of attention! Harry was stolen off my trike. For a day and a half we heard rumors of his adventures but we didn’t see him. That was until prior to closing ceremonies I was asked to go outside and to look up. Holy crow – There was Harry trying to repel down the side of the convention center! Once we helped him down, it was time for the culprits to answer for their actions and “charges” were filed against the New Mexico

District by Region “F”un. A trial was held, witnesses interviewed and the wise Judge (yes, he even played one in real life) found New Mexico guilty of stealing Harry. Just when we thought we had justice, the Deputy Director said that he’d never seen such a travesty of justice and he was confiscating Harry. He would sort the situation out and we could get Harry back at Wing Ding. Fortunately for us, higher-level Officers’ good judgments prevailed and Harry was returned to us. Well, at least until his next adventure. Harry is also a fantastic Motorist Awareness Bear. You’ll learn more about that next month as we follow his travels. JERKING FELT AFTER SHIFTING INTO FIFTH _____________________________

Q:

I have a 2008 GL1800 with a 2013 Roadsmith trike kit on it. It has 46,000 miles on it. Lately, I have noticed that after I shift into fifth gear while riding, there is a “jump” or “jerk” like feel. It feels like maybe the fifth gear didn’t go all the way into gear and then it finally slides in. It doesn’t do this often but it’s getting more regular. Someone told me that because of a second U-joint, it may be getting worn out.

030

I’ve also been told that it might be in the transmission – the chip that tells it when to shift at the right time. I was also told there was a problem with this issue on the ’08 Wings and the problem was corrected. What is your idea of my problem and should Honda be liable for the defect. I read your column in Wing World and really enjoy it. Bill Nelson Monroe, Ga.

A:

I’ve been aware for some time of this symptom appearing, mostly on 2007 models, but I’ve never heard any official

diagnosis of the root cause from Honda or any other credible source. The problem is most likely the result of a worn or bent shift fork. Yes, it will probably get worse over time and use. My idea of the problem? There may have been a running production change around 2006 (pure speculation on my part) that made the bike’s transmission less resistant to this issue. But because of the low numbers of bikes involved, I don’t believe there is/was an actual defect. Unless I’m missing the big news at Roadsmith, your trike has the same manual transmission it had when it was a two-wheeler. There is

no “chip” telling the transmission when to shift. Only an automatic transmission has that feature. When or whether to shift, it’s all up to you ... or not. My knowledge of the riding habits of some Gold Wing owners, specifically engine lugging, tells me this is more likely to be a self-inflicted wound. And lugging the engine with the additional weight of the trike kit is almost a guarantee of transmission damage. Should Honda be liable? No more liable than if you’d burned out your clutch pack. Folks may whine and moan and pretend to blow lunch when the issue of an automatic transmission Wing comes up. But if Honda would address the Luxury Touring market with their paddleshifting Dual Clutch trannies and forget about foisting them on the sport and ADV crowd, they may find sales of automatic Wings fairly brisk ... especially among those planning to trike the bike or not particularly enamored or experienced with manual-shift transmissions. One thing is for sure; an automatic would preclude issues like this one.

_______________________________ NONWORKING ODOMETER ______________________________

Q:

I am the original owner of a 1984 Honda Aspencade and a GWRRA Member since 1987. My problem is the odometer. Everything on the digital module works fine except the wheels on the odometer do not turn. I bought a used digital unit while I was in Phoenix at the junkyard off of 16th Street. Not sure if the digital module works. It was the only one in the yard.

2015-08_3_ignition_workbench.indd 31

6/11/15 2:59 PM

IGNITION

WOR K BE NCH

What controls the odometer? (A small motor?) I wonder what I’ll find if I open up the digital module. Is it repairable? Are there any manuals explaining opening/repairing the digital module? Would spraying the connectors with a contact cleaner help? I cannot bring my Honda in for Pennsylvania state inspection, which is due once a year, unless the odometer is working. I know it’s old but my Honda has never let me down in all of the 48 states and Nova Scotia. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Ronald Harley Walnutport, Pa.

A:

The odometer on the Aspencade is a replaceable part (37210 -MG9 -871). However, it’s been unavailable from Honda for years. Both the speedometer and odometer respond to 5-volt pulses – 8 per revolution of the speed sensor’s shaft. Because you say the entire instrument cluster works except for the odometer, I’m assuming your speedometer is giving correct speed indications. That being the case, we can dispense with checks of the speed sensor at the front wheel, but do check the condition of the speed sensor connection to the instrument cluster. On the ’84 Aspencade, it’s a threepin, white connector behind the instruments. To replace the odometer, you’ll need to remove the instrument cluster, then separate its mounting bracket by removing four nuts on the backside. After that, remove screws retaining the glass and panel, then remove four screws on the back to remove the plastic wire cover. Locate

032

the small electrical plug connecting the odometer to the instrument’s wiring, and disconnect it. Finally, remove the odometer. Repeat the procedure on your boneyard treasure, and swap its odometer into your cluster. Sorry to say, there are no instructions given in the shop manual for testing the odometer, but it can be tested by removing the speed sensor from the speedo gearbox and spinning its shaft clockwise with the ignition key on to see if the number wheels turn. Use an electric drill with screwdriver attachment to do this, or you’ll be turning by hand till the cows come home. Be sure to check for dirt or corrosion in that internal odometer connection to the instrument’s wiring. ________________________________ THROTTLE ROTATION PLAY ______________________________

Q:

If it’s possible, how do I remove some or all of the rotation slack in the throttle handle of my 2010 Gold Wing? It sometimes present s a slightly hazardous moment when trying to start forward in sticky situations, especially when needing to start with the front wheel turned! The response is not as accurate as I would like. Also, what is the front wheel installation tightening sequence? Bill Griesbeck Claryville, N.Y.

A:

Look at your throttle twist grip, and you’ll f ind t wo cables exiting at the front. The upper one is the pull cable, and it’s adjustable by means of the

hex barrel and locknut. The shop manual specifies between 2 and 6 mm of free throttle rotation. Most of the bikes seem to be delivered with the free play on the loose side, and yes ... it can make for jerky throttle transitions, and starting off in the situations you mention can require close attention to clutch and throttle control. Personally, I prefer to adjust throttle free play as close to zero as possible, without the cables being too tight. How tight is too tight? With the bike on the center stand and the engine warm, loosen the cable locknut and unscrew the adjuster till free play at the twist grip appears nil. Snug the locknut, start the engine and rotate the handlebars slowly from lock to lock. If the idle rpm rises at all as the handlebars approach full lock, the cable is too tight. Back the adjuster off one complete turn, and re-check. Regarding the front wheel installation, this will be the third time in recent months that I’ve explained this procedure in print. So I’d like to encourage you and all other Members who perform their own maintenance to obtain a copy of the Genuine Honda service manual for your year model from your dealer or order it directly from the publisher at www.helminc.com. I guarantee you’ll find it well worth the asking price. After inserting both wheel spacers in the wheel hub, center the wheel between the forks and insert the axle fully from the left side. Align the scribed mark on the axle with the outer edge of the left fork leg, and torque the left pinch bolts to 16 ft. lbs. Note – those bolts are used at this point only to hold the axle still while the axle nut is tightened and will be loosened again in the final

step. Install the axle nut and torque to 44 lb. ft. Torque both right side pinch bolts to 16 lb. ft., alternating between them till neither move any further as the torque wrench clicks. Install the right caliper, torqueing the mount bolts to 23 ft. lbs. Install the left caliper, torqueing the lower pivot bolt to 23 ft. lbs. and the upper joint bolt to 19 ft. lbs. Now – and this is important – fully loosen both left side axle pinch bolts, and pump the front end up and down several times while holding the brake applied. This seats and aligns the axle and calipers. Lastly, re-torque the left pinch bolts to 16 ft. lbs., alternating between them as you did for the right side.

ELECTRICAL PROBLEM _____________________________

Q:

W hile dri v ing my 20 02 GL1800 home after getting new tires installed, I noticed that my radio would cut out when I applied the brakes. I immediately returned to my mechanic and showed him the problem. He suggested a faulty relay and asked me to return in a couple of days, as he was busy at the moment. I got the bike home and while in the garage I pumped the foot brake and noticed my headlights dim and the display go dark. Then, I turned off the ignition, turned it back on and got just a flash of a neutral light and then nothing. I checked

WOR K BE NCH

my battery and its connectors and all seemed OK. The battery was installed August 2012. After two days, I went to check voltage with the ignition on to see if there was a noticeable drop and the display lit up. I turned it off and back on and got a flashing neutral light and a clicking noise from under the saddle. I removed the saddle and gave the relay box a good whack and the clicking stopped. Now all the electrical functions seem normal. My mechanic asked me to bring it in and he checked all the relays in the box. He replaced the relay for the radio circuit as he noticed it was a bit warmer than the others. He also could not cause a complete current

drop out by removing all the relays one at a time. The bike seems fine now but I wonder if I am still going to have an intermittent problem down the road with it. My mechanic also says the Gold Wing shop manual is not good for troubleshooting electrical. I’m wondering if you have any clue to what might be the problem. By the way, my mechanic is Honda trained and has been taking care of my bikes for 30 years. Jay Van Velzen Baldwin City, Kan.

A:

The shop manual/ETM is actually pretty good. But one needs to understand how to use it to best advantage. Also, electrical problems are not the strong point of most mechanics, regardless of brand or vehicle type. Having said that, no manual could hope to cover every possibility. A “good whack ” can sometimes correct a loose or dirty connection. But once the symptom is gone, it’s usually not possible to

034

detect its root cause. Short story – Coming home at night from a pizza joint in a Chevy Chevette packed with college students (I was one of them), the dashboard lights went out – All of them. Riding shotgun, I raised a fist and came down hard on the top of the padded dashboard. You guessed it – it was like someone threw a switch. All the lights popped on instantly, and the car never exhibited that problem again for as long as I knew its owner. ______________________________ TECHRON, TIRE AND TRIKE QUESTION ______________________________

Q:

Workbench is the best. You continue to give useful advice and tips. Now I need your help. I have a 2001 Gold Wing and after reading your advice on fuel injector cleaners I purchased the Techron Concentrate Plus cleaner. My question is how much should be added to a tank of gas for a motorcycle since the

bottle does not say. My second question concerns tire pressure. I purchased the Tiregard Tire Pressure Monitoring System for my motorcycle but am having trouble figuring out what I should set the low and high tire pressure range at and am unable to find what temperature limits should be set for the Dunlop Elite 3. What is your suggestion? Finally, I am considering having my Wing converted to a trike but a friend of mine said he read somewhere that the 2001 thru 2004 Wings have a frame issue and you should not convert them. I have not found anything supporting this. What are your thoughts or concerns for this conversion? Thank you for your assistance. Brian Gilbert Panama City, Fla.

A:

The Techron bottle (as with all of its competitors) states the entire contents treats “up to” a certain number of gallons. This doesn’t mean you get the

AUGUST 2015

IGNITION

same cleaning effectiveness at the maximum number of gallons as at the minimum. In fact, it means that above that maximum number of gallons stated, the contents of the bottle will not be sufficient to deliver any meaningful benefit. Ah – you have to love marketing departments ... or not. Regardless of whether the bottle claims to treat “up to” 12 gallons, pour the entire contents into your tank. Then fill the tank and burn as much of that tank as you can before refueling. The frame-cracking thing raises its ugly head again! In my opinion, regardless of any supposed shortcuts Honda may have taken with the welding process, the cracks were caused by the severe impact to the lower frame member delivered by severe suspension bottoming. Many owners either fail to understand the need to adjust the suspension to suit existing loads and speeds, or they believe that #4 is sufficient for a full load ... which it definitely is not. I n f ac t , w i t h t he great likelihood that the rear suspension adjuster is at least par tly nonfunctional, there would be no difference in practice between #4 and Zero. The additional weight of a trike kit may worsen the effect on GL1800s affected by the frame weld recall, which were never actually repaired under the terms of that recall, especially if the chosen trike kit uses the bike’s original shock absorber mounted in the original location. All other designs should be fine. Regarding the TPS model you mention, my suggestion is to not bother making any high or low pressure or temperature setting. If correctly inflated cold (not above

the maximum printed on the tire’s sidewall), then yes – pressure and temperature will rise when underway, but this is all taken into account by the tire manufacturer and will not become dangerous unless the machine is badly overloaded. It’s underinflation that’s the great killer here, because it automatically results in overloading, excess tire temperature, and, too commonly, catastrophic tire failure. But unless you’ve mounted that key fob-shaped device on your handlebars or somewhere else it can be seen while riding, what would be the point of any alerts? If it’s in your pocket, you’re unlikely to hear any audible alarm or buzzing. And because the entire purpose of a motorcycle TPS (in my opinion) is to alert the rider of danger developing while actually underway, I fail to understand what possible benefit can be had from any motorcycle TPS that can’t be easily read and understood without removing hands from the handlebar. For use as a static pressure check before riding, it may be convenient. But checking pressure

WOR K BE NCH

remotely will likely eliminate the daily routine of getting down at eye level with the rubber to check for punctures or other damage ... not a good thing in my view. ______________________________ FUSE BOX NO. 21 ______________________________

Q:

I have a 2003 Gold Wing and last week it started blowing fuses in fuse box No. 21. Is this a common problem and what all does this fuse control? I have not been able to locate the short. Ron Norris Shelby, Ohio

A:

No, Ron. It’s not a common problem. My hunch is that something attached at either the accessory terminal near your battery or the accessory power socket in the left fairing cubby is either drawing too much power or is shorted.

t was midyear 1974 and most likely late May or early June. Honda Motors in Japan briefly interrupted a production line (arguably the CB750) and hand assembled as many as 11 preproduction *prototype motorcycles that would forever change the world’s outlook on motor touring. The concept, clay model stages, basic engine testing and design decisions began in 1972 with the idea that it must be uniquely engineered and like no other motorcycle on the planet. Those thoughts and efforts reached their culmination with these unique 11 units. All of these were destined to become an introduction to the world of the forth coming dynamic Gold Wing GL1000 – water cooled, shaft driven, horizontally opposed flat four 999 cc grand touring machine. Some of these first units, five in all, were designated to be on display in the USA at the Las Vegas

038

Dealer Convention Sept. 19, 1974. I believe (at this writing) the five that were there were GL1-1000001, GL1-1000002, GL1-1000003, GL1-1000004 and GL1-1000005. These consisted of two Candy Antares Red, two Candy BlueGreen and one Sulfur Yellow. The Sulfur Yellow unit was the only one made of the 11 and also of any further units until the color was introduced as a choice for the 1976 model. Of the six remaining units, **one is in a museum in Germany, serial number GL1-1000007, with no engine number; and one is in the Honda plant foyer in Japan (S/N unknown). On Sept. 21, 1974, one unit was on display at the Cologne Show in Europe and was Candy Antares Red [now the 007 unit in Germany]. On the same day, one Candy Blue-Green unit was displayed in Bol d’Or, France. These events were a splendid introduction of the Honda Gold Wing GL1000.

The disposition of the remaining units is unclear, but they are suspected to have remained in Japan for additional engineering, government compliance requirements, service and owners manuals and/or production planning. **Seemingly, this was the intent of frame number GL1-1000011; engine number GL1-1000000014. This also may have been the first unit made in December (or possibly late November) 1974, along with the next stage of the GL1000 production timeline. It is believed by some that 0011 may have employed some of the features of the early 10 units. To speculate further – It was possibly assembled after the original 10 and sometime before the next phase of production would be a reasonable assumption. It is known to have been used for some of the service manuals. During December 1974, Honda produced the ***preproduction GL1000 and as many as 39 more units were made. The resulting decisions gleaned from the conventions, initial displays and/or the vehicle compliance laws in various countries had given Honda the remaining insights of the final ***production units’ ultimate structure. Honda needed the preproduction units that were near perfect examples of the production machines that were scheduled in January 1975. This was to prove that their motorcycles were up to the highest manufacturing standards. The preproduction units were assigned to numerous facilities for very aggressive testing and it was a no-holds-barred requirement. They were used for Honda testing, testing organizations and magazine entities. All of the magazine publishers were handed units to road test to include performance testing. All were happy to do this and most made performance testing a very high priority. It is fair to say that all of the magazines were allowed, with Honda engineering supervision, to dismantle each engine to find any failures or extensive wear points. It is not known how many of these preproduction units remain and over the last 10 years we have only found two that are still serviceable – serial numbers GL1-000027 and GL1-1000040, engine number GL1E-1000029. GL1-1000051 has been located and was manufactured in January 1975. This unit may have been the first or second production GL1000. I conclude that the beating heart of these first GL1000s lie in every Gold Wing made from that point on.

**Credit to Peter Rakestrow, Archivist, Gold Wing Owners Group Great Britain (GWOGGB). ***Preproduction vehicles by definition are those that were produced for serious aggressive testing mixed and/or normal operation. This allows the manufacturer to literally allow the units to “go to failure” in order to find potential weak areas and fix them before production began.

Editor’s Note: Bike #02 will be at Wing Ding at the main entrance to the vendor hall. Boody, GWRRA Member #21562, lives in Oliver Springs, Tennessee. Boody owns serial number GL1-1000040, a preproduction unit made in December of 1974, and serial number GL1-1000104, a production unit made in January 1975. He is restoring GL1-1000002 for its owner. He has written for Naked Goldwings and has studied the GL1000 motorcycle extensively since 1975.

Notes *A prototype vehicle is described as units made for display. Usually shown to gauge public response and to promote the aesthetic design concept. WINGWORLDMAG.COM

CUSTOMIZING A GL1000 BY MIKE HILDEBRAND

I

had first spotted this 1976 LTD 13 years ago, hidden away in the corner of a custom motorcycle seat business in Arkansas, and out of a lack of interest, didn’t say anything to the owner about whether it was for sale. Four years ago, I was in that same shop with a friend who was having a seat made and walked back to see if it was still there, and there it sat in the same spot I had seen it in years before. It had no carbs installed, and was in pretty sad shape. I asked the owner if he would sell it and offered him a price. He turned me down and said he couldn’t sell it for that. One year later, he called me and asked if I was still interested and I bought it for my original offered price. WINGWORLDMAG.COM

After trailering it home, along with several boxes of parts including the carbs, it sat in my garage for four to five months. Every time I walked by it, I wondered to myself, “What have I gotten myself into?” I had never attempted anything like this in my life, but I was determined to succeed. The carbs were locked up tight and after disassembly, it wasn’t hard to figure out why. Mike Nixon of California worked his magic on them and they looked brand new, inside and out. Then the fun started … disassembly began, starting with the rear end, including the swingarm, fuel tank and everything in between, plus cleaning, polishing and having parts powdercoated. Everything on the bike was rusted really bad, including most of the bearings. The pivot collars were actually rusted to the pivot bolts inside the swingarm, but they came apart fairly easy. All of these were replaced with NOS parts before reassembly. The heads were also removed to replace the valve seals and to lap the valves, then the engine was repainted while disassembled. The fuel tank was cleaned out and recoated after powder coating the outside. I then reinstalled the heads, along with the cooling tubes, etc., painting and powder-coating parts before reassembly. The fun then began on the other end with the removal of the entire front end. I replaced the original loose ball bearings in the steering

head with All Balls Racing bearings, then replaced the fork seals, etc. before reassembly of the front end. The original faces on the speedometer and tachometer were pretty bad, so they were replaced with white faces. After installing the newly painted plastic parts, it was finally beginning to look like a motorcycle again. The final few months were the most stressful, trying to get the exhaust to fit to my satisfaction, along with several other accessories, but it finally all came together. Then the moment of truth – to see if it would run after sitting for 28 years. It fired right up, but was only running on three cylinders. I thought, how is this possible? There are only two coils, and this being a wasted spark engine, each coil fires two cylinders simultaneously. It ended up being a bad coil, which was new along with the DynaTek electronic ignition. After replacing it, the bike ran like new. Some people think I shouldn’t have café’d an LTD, being as though only 2000 were built, but I wanted a unique bike, unlike anything I had ever seen before, and I think I accomplished my goal. I belong to the greatest GWRRA Chapter in the U.S., Chapter H, in Kansas, and plan on riding the café bike, along with my 2012 GL1800 trike on many rides in 2015.

AN OLD WING AND A CALIFORNIA DREAM BY JOHN RYBACKI II

“Y

ou’ve never been to California!” This was my exclamation to my girlfriend when she mentioned to me that, although having lived in Arizona for 10 years, growing up on the east coast and even travelling to Russia and Mexico, she had yet to visit our neighbor state to the west. She had always wanted to go; unfortunately life had gotten in the way. Between career and outside interests, it had just never materialized. It was at that time that the plan was set in motion. I was going to show her that weekend vacations are not only possible but far more enjoyable on the back of a motorcycle, especially one as comfortable as a Gold Wing. She had co-ridden with me several times on my venerable old 1986 GL1200 Interstate for local day rides around the Phoenix area. A trip of the proportions we were about to undertake was large even for me, as I am still raising two children at home and have a small business to run. Long distance touring is still not an option for me, though my heart yearns for the open road and the experiences it brings. With a few phone calls to some great friends in Orange County, California, our place to stay and day rides were scheduled and organized. We were set! The weeks leading up to the trip were spent in getting the bike ready for the mileage we would be doing and for planning our route. The vehicle for this dream trip could not have been better – My trusty 1986 GL1200 has been a flawless companion for the

046

last three years and over 18,000 miles I have put on her. Some may say 18,000 miles is not a lot on a Gold Wing, but one must also take into account that I am a 38-year-old father of two and small business owner. I ride as often and as far as I can. I purchased the Wing from its second owner, who happened to be a close friend with the original purchaser. Along with the bike, I received a detailed maintenance history. I know all work ever performed on the bike and the mileage at which it was done. At the time of purchase, there was 94,000 miles on the odometer. As of this writing, there are over 112,000. The only mechanical issues this machine has ever had throughout its entire 29-year lifespan is one water pump replaced a year ago and one set of pulse generators changed before our California getaway. In essence, this has been one very reliable and well-built motorcycle. It is a testament to the engineers at Honda for bringing forth a design that has been able to stand the test of time with so little need for repair, save routine maintenance. As previously mentioned, trip preparations included a thorough going over of all fluids, brakes, tires and electrical. It also included some items I chose for the trip that I had wanted to test for quite some time. It has to be said that I am not a “gadget guy,” so when I choose a piece of equipment, it is done with many hours of research and thought before I ever trust it on my Wing. One item chosen was Dyna Beads manufactured by Innovative Balancing. In my opinion, they have done

their homework in the realm of tire balancing. The dynamic balancing methodology is very sound. Our ride was smoother than I have ever felt before using the exact same type of tire. Speaking of tires, I also installed a new set of rubber for this trip – a set of Continental Milestone Mileage Plus tires, front and rear. I have been very pleased with their performance in prior runs, the last getting over 10,000 miles out of the rear alone. Road handling has been very predictable and cornering grip is amazing. Tar snakes have never been an issue unless nearing the end of their useable life, and even then, they are not so bad as one might think. I had been having a bit of an issue with the ignition and after some searching in my factory service manual and online, I deduced that the pulse generators were at an end to their service life and were causing the ignition woes. One quick call to the great people at Hollister Powersports in California and a new set of pulse generators were on the way to my door. I have found when it comes to finding parts for my bike, they have always been able to track them down when even my local parts departments have thrown their hands up in defeat. With the pulse generators installed, new rubber and a fresh oil change with full synthetic oil, the bike was in fantastic shape and completely road ready. For our trip, we also decided that it would be nice to have some form of an intercom system, finally. Again I went to the reviews and researched. I knew I wanted to find a system that would be cordless with Bluetooth connectivity and easy to operate to play music and for our communications needs. After some time, I found what I was looking for. It was an inexpensive Bluetooth com set that was easy to use, simple to set up, and most importantly, comfortable with great audio once installed into the helmets. I also went with a name I had heard of before and that close friends had been using with great satisfaction, the Cardo Systems, Inc. Scala Rider Q1 TeamSet. It is an externally mounted transceiver unit with Bluetooth connectivity for up to two devices and music sharing capability, with a very adequate battery life. The Bluetooth connectivity came in quite handy when using the GPS built into my phone. Having the directions sent to me through the headset was an amazing feature and one I have thoroughly enjoyed on numerous rides. Now that the Gold Wing received maintenance and we were set with new gear and communications, we were set to go. On a fantastically cool Arizona spring WINGWORLDMAG.COM

morning, we set off with our route well planned. We would be seeing some amazing roadside treasures normally passed by when using major highways for travel. The byways of Arizona are filled with the kitschiest of places to see and visit and many of which even I, an Arizona native, have never seen until I got my Gold Wing. Our route took us through the town of Maricopa and down to Gila Bend by way of the John Wayne Parkway, also known as State Route 347. SR347 connects to Interstate 8 just east of Gila Bend after passing through some of the prettiest desert landscape and rolling hills, as any of the backroads of Arizona has to offer. Once in Gila Bend at the junction with Interstate 8, there is a little diner with adjoining hotel called Best Western Space Age Lodge and Restaurant first opened in 1965. It has been serving travelers ever since. As a bit of a sci-fi buff, I couldn’t help but to make this our first stop and grab breakfast and a bit of atmosphere for the beginning of our trip. The food is actually rather good as far as diner fare goes. If you pass through this area, I would recommend a stop. It is worth the visit – there was good food, good atmosphere and the local populous were friendly. With breakfast and fuel out of the way, we pressed on with our journey merging onto Interstate 8. Continuing west, we rolled across some amazing desert landscape. With recent rainfalls and a very mild winter, the spring blossoms of the desert made the trip through the normally flat expanses, very pleasant. Our ability to communicate through the headsets meant so much in that we could converse about sights as we saw them and share the journey immediately, not only at the fuel stops. One interesting note about the trip from Gila Bend to Yuma is that the road through Telegraph Pass has cisterns along the way normally filled with water. It’s a bit of a throwback to the day of travel when cooling systems on vehicles were not as efficient as they are today. Seeing things like these cisterns make me think about how travel in the early years of this country must have been quite an adventure wrought with risks. A simple interstate trip we take for granted today was an adventure all on its own back then. Entering Yuma and stopping for fuel, I advised my girlfriend, Ariella, that just over the Colorado River was California. It was the spot to take her obligatory photo of the “Welcome to California” sign, and we did just that. One milestone met, the conversation turned to how we had covered so many miles already and there was no real fatigue or “saddle sore” issues. In fact, the ride was quite pleasant. Onward, we plodded further into California. We went till we crested the range separating

048

the fertile farmlands of inland California to the coastal regions of San Diego County. As we descended into San Diego and the wonderful salt air, we then merged onto the Highway 805 north to Los Angeles, where we met up with our friend for the remainder of the ride to his home. Having arrived safely, we enjoyed an evening recounting the sights and feelings of the ride. Saturday morning brought a chance to take a nice cruise down to Laguna Beach and we enjoyed the morning air and visit to the tide pools. Enjoying the beach as the waves rolled in and out, I reflected on what a joy it is to ride, and the feeling of being able to share that with someone is even better. Returning to our home away from home, we found our friends had planned a wonderful dinner of sushi and a night out on the town at a local social club they belong to. In short, a wonderful time was had by all. Sunday, our friends had arranged a ride with a few of their friends to see some more of the sights and to sample the local cuisine. We left at sunup to meet with the rest of the group at a coffee house for a light breakfast and some go-juice for the machines as well. Off we rode toward downtown Los Angeles and into Hollywood, passing close by the famed Hollywood sign and onto Hollywood Boulevard, traveling down the Walk of Fame, passing by the historic TCL Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum and Ripley’s Believe It

or Not Museum. Passing through downtown Hollywood hearing the sounds of the street performers, the sights and colors of the locals is an experience either only truly appreciated on a motorcycle or actually walking among the crowds. The immersion factor that motorcycling brings makes each ride so much more enjoyable. Passing through Hollywood, we entered the canyon areas, taking the famed Mulholland Drive into Laurel Canyon and onward to Malibu Canyon Drive. The turns and sweepers rolling out ahead of us really got the blood flowing, not to mention the amazing coastal and canyon scenery. Coming out of Malibu Canyon, the vista before us of the Pacific coast was breathtaking. Merging onto California Highway 1, also known as Pacific Coast Highway, we followed the shoreline up through Malibu Bluffs Park, Ramirez Canyon, Zuma Beach, El Pescador Beach. Onward we rode, every turn revealing some new vista more beautiful than the last, until we reached our lunchtime destination – Neptune’s Net. Neptune’s Net, we were informed, is a bit of a local legendary eating establishment, and I must say I believe it. There were bikes of all vintages and style as far as the eye can see. It would appear that Neptune’s Net is the hangout for the weekend riders from the north and south coastal cities. I spoke to some riders who had made the trip all the way from San Francisco to share the food and comradery that this place has to offer. Parking can be a bit of a chore so expect to walk a bit, but the food was great and the atmosphere and view of the Pacific right across the Highway is amazing. With our bellies and bikes full, some of our crew had to bid us farewell, as there were preparations for work the following day that had to be made. We, too, needed to call our day to a close. We had the return trip home on Monday morning. With our goodbyes said and promises of a return trip soon, we all mounted up and retraced our path back through beautiful Malibu Canyon and the amazing scenery it provided. Taking the circuitous route back around the outskirts of Los Angeles into Orange County, we arrived back to our gracious friends’ humble abode where his wife had been preparing a goodbye feast of firecracker shrimp and pesto tortellini. Enjoying the company and the fellowship of friends is always something to be remembered and savored at every opportunity, and with our hearts full, we retired for the night in order to be well rested for the journey home. Our return voyage started out with great hugs and wishes of safe travel as we rode through Los Angeles to join Interstate 10 back to our home in Arizona. Taking Highway 57 north out of Orange, it soon connected

with I-10 east to Arizona from San Bernardino, through Redlands, Beaumont and into the wind farms of Palm Springs. Our Gold Wing chariot never missed a beat and surprised us both with the exceptional fuel mileage attained throughout the trip, averaging better than 40 mpg the entire weekend. With a fuel and lunch stop in Indio, we commented how we were a couple weeks early for the Coachella Music Festival and how it would be nice to bring the bike for that maybe next year. On we plodded from Indio on into Blythe right at the California/Arizona Line. With fresh drinks and a full tank we set off with just over 180 miles to go until home. As we started entering the west edges of Phoenix, I told my girlfriend that we were going to continue on till home in Mesa nonstop. Arriving home with nary a fuel stop since Blythe, we dismounted, unloaded and proceeded to recount our journey with friends and family. My girl lived out two dreams in one weekend – seeing the California coast and trying out long distance motorcycle touring. Thanks to our wonderful ride, “Solo,” we were able to enjoy our old Wing and her California dream.

RIDING FOR 60 YEARS BY MICHAEL TUCKER

M

ore than 60 years ago, I purchased my first motorized two-wheeler, a Cushman motor scooter to help me on my newspaper routes. I was 12 years old. Since registrations and records weren’t very accurate in those days, no one had any idea how old the scooter was when I bought it. New ones were advertised to hit a high speed of 50 mph. My father worked for Braniff Airways, who did all their own airplane maintenance. My dad wasn’t a mechanic, but he knew all the mechanics, so he asked a friend to bore out the one cylinder on the scooter’s motor and install an oversized piston. It took several weeks of work in his spare time, but my old bike was clocked several times at more than 52 mph. The most amazing things about that bike were the things it did not have. It had no speedometer, odometer, front headlight, rear light (although it did have a brake light), gas gauge, and certainly no clock, cruise control, front brake or audio system. The most interesting part of riding the bike was trying to gauge the mileage range without a gas gauge or odometer. My 12-year-old brain figured out that I could ride the bike until it ran out of gas, pull to side of the road, unscrew the gas tank cap, place my mouth around the hole and blow. That would force a small amount of petro from the bottom of the tank and the gas line into the engine and would allow me to travel another 2-3 miles, enough to get to a gas station or home where I could use gas from the lawn mower gas can to fill my one gallon tank. It worked every time. One of the mistakes I made was going to see my girlfriend one night. She lived on the other side of the airport, about 12 miles away. I had a flashlight that I pointed forward and held toward the back when another vehicle approached from the rear. I thought that was clever; the police officer who stopped me did

052

not agree, and he gave me a ticket. I also learned that I could tip over the scooter so that the rear wheel was off the ground. I could then rev up the motor and watch the rear tire spin. When it was rotating very fast, I could set the scooter upright and jump on. It would “burn off” throwing rocks and dust in my wake. By the time I reached 15 years of age, I bought my first car, a 1950 Ford. Remember that it was only 1956, so my car was 6 years old. Many years later, I now have two cars for my family, and they are each more than 6 years old. When I turned 16, I still had the scooter and the Ford, and I bought a 1941 International truck, Army Green with sideboards, to help me deliver newspapers. It was so ugly that my mother wanted me to park it down the street. That old vehicle had some challenges, also. When I stepped on the brakes, all four wheels were covered with brake fluid. Several times I noticed that

the spark plugs on the flathead six-cylinder engine were floating in water. At this moment in life, my dad changed jobs and we moved from Dallas, Texas, to California. Realizing that I couldn’t drive all three of my vehicles to our new home, I traded them in for a 1953 Ford and drove Route 66 behind my parents to our new home. Over the next years, while I enjoyed owning several Honda motorcycles, I got married. We had three children while I finished college, earned two graduate degrees and started my career. My two sons rode motorcycles during college and one still rides the 1973 Honda Magna (1100 cc) that I sold him 20 years ago. After each of my three children completed college and got married, I graduated to a Gold Wing and started riding longer distances, mostly by myself. I wanted to visit Mexico, but I didn’t want to ride there alone. So, I entered several Internet chat rooms and met some fellows who were planning a trip south of the border. After a few email exchanges, I realized that they were all in their twenties and rode dirt bikes. I was in my fifties at the time. But they did connect me to some men who were my age and rode cruisers. After several cautious emails, Russ Haig, who lives in Northern California, and I talked on the phone. He was part of group of riders from Oregon – near his home – who regularly rode together. They were planning to ride to Cabo San Lucas on the south end of Baja, Mexico. Neither of us was sure about such a long ride with a stranger, so we decided to meet in San Diego for an evening to talk before we crossed the border. Before we met in person, I decided that self -disclosure was the best choice so we would not waste one another’s time. I told my new friend, “I’m a pastor.” There was a long silence, and then the reply, “Well, none of us are church going guys. And at the end of each day we throw back a few cold ones. All day long we chatter with each other on the CB radios, and it’s not necessarily church talk.” “Fine with me,” I said. “I can handle all that.” I later discovered that these five fellows were thinking, “If we don’t like this guy, we’ll tell him to turn around and go home to Phoenix.” I was thinking the same thing. Since that first ride to Cabo, we’ve taken extensive rides through Mexico, British Columbia, Alberta and the Western United States. We are good WINGWORLDMAG.COM

friends. When the group came to my house in Arizona to stay one night on our way to Mexico, they arrived on a Saturday. I told them they were not obligated to attend church with me the next day, but they certainly were welcome to do so. They all attended and entered into the worship experience. My faith is not a hindrance to our friendship, and we’ve had some wonderful discussions. Over the past few decades, I’ve racked up 20,000 miles per year on my Wings. I’m on my fourth one now. Here are some of the most common questions I receive when I tell people how long I’ve been riding. 1. Does your wife of 53 years ride with you? She doesn’t ride and I don’t quilt. It’s a good arrangement for us. 2. Have you ever gone down? Yes. 3. Do you ever ride when it’s hot? I live in Phoenix and ride each year to Death Valley. 4. Do you ever ride when it’s cold? I was so cold on a ride from Page, Arizona, to Flagstaff that I seriously considered stopping and building a fire. 5. Do you ever ride in hard rain? I have ridden in such a downpour that I couldn’t see my front fender. I highly recommend Frogg Toggs Raingear. When you ride in rain, you don’t have to ride wet. 6. Do you ever ride in snow or sleet? No. I pull over and stop. 7. Have you ever had a tire blow out when you are riding? Yes, several times, but I’ve never gone down when that happened. 8. Have you ever hit an animal? I hit a deer in British Columbia, a rock badger in Yellowstone, a cow in Arizona (killed it) and several dogs. What do you do when you hit an animal? When I ran over the badger in Yellowstone, I kept going until I located a park ranger and told him about the incident. He confirmed that I did the right thing and told me, “Never confront a wounded animal.” 9. Have you ever had any close calls when a car/truck doesn’t see you and pulls over on you? Are you kidding? 10. What is your longest day/miles in the saddle? Fort Stockton, Texas, to Tempe, Arizona; 1,100 miles; 18 hours. Michael Tucker, GWRRA Member #107657, lives in Mesa, Arizona.

I have owned this 1976 GL1000 since 1988 when I bought it. I traveled with my wife from Israel to Turkey, Cyprus and Sinai (Egypt), 49,000 miles. The bike is in very good shape. I took off all the luggage … I like it thin and clean. The fuel consumption is 38 mpg. I like it very much and I’ll keep it to give to my little son.

I bought this bike used five years ago with 53K miles on it. I have cleaned and polished most everything on it. I replaced the water pump, timing belts, brake pads, spark plugs, oil, coolant and flushed out the radiator. I had no records of maintenance. I also took the tires off last year and had new ones mounted, opting for a whitewall on front. The MTC Voyager was bought used. I had it custom painted to match the bike colors. Installing the Voyager was my winter project. I like the ride. This photo is at Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee, North Carolina. Western North Carolina is absolutely the best location for bike rides. Come to the Wings Over Smokies Rally in Cherokee, the second weekend this July, and take the challenge of the Tail of the Dragon. I am a Member of GWRRA NC-G2, the Chapter hosting area rides at the rally. Ride safe, be aware at all times.

My name is Nir Zamir from Israel and I just returned to Israel after two years of vacation in Edmonton, Canada. I stayed with my son and traveled all over British Columbia and Alberta with my 2013 Red and Black Gold Wing. Two months before I returned to Israel, I decided to buy a 1985 Collection Limited Edition with the injection system and ship it to Israel. She is very beautiful – has 108,000 km, special plastic fairing, nice gold paint and the sounds of a Volkswagen. I’m back at home and waiting for my old Gold Wing to join us as a new immigrant in our beautiful country.

This was my 1982 GL1100 Interstate bought in July 2010 with 47K miles on her. She was a great find and needed a good going over – cleaning and polishing. I added some accessories and rode her sunup to sundown, rain or shine. She was my first motorcycle and I have many memories over the many miles that we spent together. I finally traded her for a 30-year newer model in May 2012 and wish that I had the room at the time to keep her. This photo was taken at Mississippi Palisades State Park in Savanna, Illinois.

FIFTY YEARS ON TWO WHEELS BY LARRY COLE

G

iven the demographics of GWRRA, I know that I’m far from alone in this, but I realized recently that I have been riding a motorcycle for half a century. Most of us have fond memories of our first ____ (fill in the blank) and motorcycles are no different. If your first bike was your last, you wouldn’t be reading this. In my case, it was a Honda 50. No, not the stepthrough model you met the nicest people on, but the Supersport with the “scrambler” exhaust. Hot stuff for a skinny 18 year old. The summer after my first year at college I got a job working at my dad’s plant in a small Pennsylvania town (nepotism was actually encouraged). I made enough money to buy the $325 bike with enough left over to pay for a year’s tuition at Penn State. Seems amazing

062

now, what with the student debt college kids get stuck with, but it was no big deal back in the ’60s. The dealer delivered my freedom machine in a pickup truck and I got my first – and last – lesson about riding. “Throttle here, clutch here, shifter here – one down, three up – brakes here and here. Have fun kid.” He wisely left before I attempted my first ride, which I survived with skin and paint intact. For the rest of the summer, if I wasn’t at work or asleep, I was puttering around on the bike. A friend got one too and we spent a fair amount of time “cowtrailing” as it was known then. It was good off-road experience and I managed not to bend or break anything on the Honda or me. In September, I rode two-lane roads over 300 miles back to school – my first touring adventure, for which I was

ill equipped. I didn’t buy my first car until I was 21, married, and a newly-minted 2nd lieutenant in the USAF. Here, I’ll leave to your imagination a montage of various motorcycles, calendar pages turning, etc. – or, we can jump-cut to – My first Gold Wing. I was buying some parts for my Honda 450 in 1975 when I saw my first GL1000 on the showroom floor. Who would want or could afford, such a monster bike, I wondered? My current motorcycle could do highway speeds, two-up – but the seed was planted. By 1984, I had been without a motorcycle for a couple years after a few close calls commuting around Denver. A friend on Colorado’s West Slope offered to sell me his 1976 GL1000 since he was buying a new Gold Wing. Although I was initially intimidated by its size, my wife and I rode through Colorado National Monument and we were hooked. I could go anywhere on this! And I did. The next summer I borrowed a tent and rode to Glacier National Park. The Gold Wing, of course, performed flawlessly, even with all my camping gear bungeed all over the back. Subsequent trips took me to Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, the Dakotas, the Grand Canyon. I soon noticed a phenomena – quite a few guys would come up to me on the road and say, “Man, I had me one of those. Wish I had kept it!” Or the variation, “Wish the wife would let me have one.” I felt truly fortunate and a little smug. Now, another montage, but this time of beautiful scenery rushing toward the windshield and calendar pages fluttering in the rearview mirrors. But the same bike. No, I didn’t upgrade to the 1100, the 1200, the 1500 or the 1800 – I still ride the same 1976 Gold Wing. It runs just as well as the day I bought it and to me at least, looks like what I want a motorcycle to look like. I had it painted red from the original Sulphur Yellow, then back to yellow. At 38 years old, Ol’ Yeller still has the original clutch and water pump (despite running the green coolant for years). I have little doubt that this bike may be the one that outlasts me, and will eventually go to someone else – who will make wonderful memories with it, too.

DRESSING A WING IN THE EARLY DAYS

BY GREGG MCNABB

D

ressing a Wing in the early days was very different from today. In the late ’70s to early ’80s, there were only a few companies selling chrome accessories. Many riders made their own or customized a product from other bikes or cars. Gene’s Gallery started dressing Gold Wings in 1975 with our first GL1000. GL1000 and early GL1100s came from the factory as naked Wings – no fairing, no saddlebags, no radio – just the bike. We developed several items for the GL1000/1100 Gold Wing – chrome or painted fuel pump covers, fiberglass front radiator spoiler for better air flow and lighting, front turn signal grills, dual power radio antennas with lights on top of the CB antenna that lit up when the CB radio was transmitting, cruise controls, early tank mounted GPS/map holder (worked by putting a rolled up map inside a chrome accent with a twist knob at the top to change the view), strip lights for early Ring of Fire lights on the front wheels, along with many other items. At that time there was no Kuryakyn, Show Chrome or Add On to chose products from. The challenge for dressing an early Gold Wing was trying to fit different brands of products for a good look. There were no catalogs to pick from or compatibility from company to company for fitment of their parts. If you used a Bates rear trunk with a custom Dresser rear light bar, many times the brackets for both needed to fit in the same location. This made it necessary to make a custom mount to support both. But that was the fun of dressing a bike back then. Trailer hitches were some of the most challenging to mount. In 1980 when Honda came out with the GL1100 Interstate, it changed the aftermarket industry. Now there was a template for accessory companies to make standardize products. Some of the really cool custom work we did included fitting a Honda CX650 Turbo square headlight into a 1982 Aspencade that came with a round headlight. It took a lot of planning and extra fiberglass work before we repainted the complete bike. It was a hit at the 1983 Wing Ding. Many Honda officials wanted to know how we did it and which dealer supplied the headlight, which was not available to the general public. In 1984, the GL1200 Aspencade came from the factory with a square headlight. We always had Friday night dinner rides and it was a competition to see who could come with a new item and keep it a secret until the ride, to be one-up on the group. One rider was fixated with watching the TV show Dallas. In those days, there was no such thing as recording your show

and watching it later. We helped him develop a mount for his handlebars to hold a small television set so he wouldn’t miss J.R. Ewing or the show. F4 CUSTOMS WINDSHIELD A BETTER PORTAL TO ADVENTURE BY KEVIN GREENWALD

E

ver y thing from safe operation to e n j oy i n g t h e sight s makes a clear, dependable windshield a critical component on our Gold Wings, and to this end, F4 Customs Windshields has produced a worthy option for your bike. If you’re considering either replacement of your original shield or upgrading to something, taller or wider, you may wish to give F4 a good look. These shields, designed and manufactured by Don Frank in Streetsboro, Ohio, have some of the best ratings in the industry for hardness, reduction of wind buffeting, optical clarity, cleanability and endurance. When I ordered my F4, I had many options to pick from: clear or tinted, with or without the central vent, order a new vent or use my old one, shorter, wider, taller, original, etc. Though a bit pricier than a Honda OEM, this shield ($335 for my 2012 GL1800) p r ove d to b e s t i f f e r, stronger (.157-inch thick)

and clearer than anything I have purchased or had installed in the past on any brand of bike I’ve owned. It shipped directly from F4 to my backdoor with everything I needed to either self-install or take to my favorite Honda dealer. The instruction sheet has 14 methodical steps with accompanying photos. If you need a little more visual handholding, you can view a video on the company website or even phone for friendly, personal assistance. I opted to have Scott, my Honda mechanic at Badger Cycle in Manitowoc, Wisconsin (a Wing World Golden Dealership), perform the install for two reasons. One, I wanted to snap pics of the process; and two – My mechanical abilities made even the Easy-Bake Oven I bought for my daughter Brenda one Christmas a four-hour challenge. I’m not the guy you want doing serious wrenching on your bike, though watching the process, any Wing owner WINGWORLDMAG.COM

with basic skills and confidence could tackle swapping out shields in their home garage. The most time-consuming part of the process is cleaning off the old adhesive (it will have the appearance of wide electrical tape) where you need to install the generous amount of new tape that comes with any F4 shield. Once installed, I did some self-adjusting on the height – not only to set the shield exactly where I wanted it for my desired line of sight, but also to test how rigidly it stays in place. I’ve had shields in the past that would settle on one side in response to vibration or air pressure. The F4 employs the addition of soft Velcro strips inside your bike to add some welcome additional tension and does a nice job of preventing unwarranted movement or asymmetrical “settling.” Depending on where you set your height, there should be a noticeable reduction in helmet buffeting for both rider and co-rider, and better clarity in helmet-tohelmet communication. We’re not talking Nobel-Prize worthy improvement, but it was better with the F4 than before, so smiles and high-fives all around. Despite operating in some high winds common to Wisconsin in spring, the shield stayed obediently in place. The optical clarity is very noticeable, especially where the shield curves – an area noteworthy for distortion on some lower quality, less expensive products. It really does clean up well with paper and glass cleaner, though I would still avoid anything that contains ammonia. That’s a harsh chemical that I always steer clear of, just for caution’s sake. To order an F4 or consult with the company about your needs and how they might supply the visual improvement you’re looking for (and thru!), contact them at 1-330-968-4644 or email them at www.f4customs.com. Their website also lists many F4 dealerships and rally appearances throughout the USA and Canada where you can view products in person before making your purchase. If it’s time to replace or improve, go see the difference.

WING DING 37 ROCKET CITY ROAD TRIP BY JOHN MATA JR.

L

adies and gentlemen, are you ready for your next amazing on-road experience? If you’ve been gearing up to rock the highways and have been worrying about choosing a destination or city to ride to, feel free to put your mind at ease. Huntsville, Alabama – that’s where you’ll want to be Sept. 3-6. Actually, that’s the exact spot where plenty of other Gold Wing riders will be setting their road trip sights as well. “Why,” you may ask? The 37th Wing Ding extravaganza, that’s why. There are few events out there that are made for Gold Wing riders by Gold Wing riders, and if you’ve been to one of these functions before, you know just how great of a weekend to expect. But if for some odd reason, you have yet to attend one of the past 36 Wing Dings, you’ll want to put an end to that losing streak this year. Now for starters, the city of Huntsville itself is a pretty amazing place to visit. It is known as “Rocket City” for its intimate history with U.S. space missions and technology development since the 1950s. When in town, a trip to Davidson Center for Space Exploration, as well as the U.S. Space and Rocket Center should be considered prerequisite before venturing anywhere else inside Huntsville city limits. The artifacts seen here are literally out of this world. Actually, if you plan on coming to town early, there will be a welcoming party right at the museums, Wednesday, Sept. 2, starting at 6 p.m. This will be the perfect opportunity to take in the sights of incredible space exploration exhibits, as well as meet up with fellow land travelers. There couldn’t be a better way to blast off for the big weekend! This year, the official location of Wing Ding will be at the state-of-the-art Von Braun Center, which will be the perfect backdrop for the event. There is a list of hotels offering regular running shuttle services to VBC and back, and if

072

you’re interested in this service, be sure to take a look online (wing-ding.org) before finalizing any travel arrangements. The Gold Wing Road Rider Association has been doing (and always does) the best they can to ensure that their events are fun, convenient and safe for all in attendance. Now that you know where to book your trip, the time to gather your things is now. With that in mind, let’s get familiarized with the daily event breakdowns for the fantastic times ahead. Most of the events will take place at VBC. The ones that don’t aren’t very far off-site. Opening Ceremonies for Wing Ding 37 will kick-off at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at VBC arena. Shortly after, head to East Hall to register and pickup information packets for the weekend’s activities. Make sure to hit the food court for some much needed fuel to start the action-packed day. For all you card sharks out there, get ready to put your skills to the test by signing up for the Poker Run, which will surely be one of the big draws throughout the weekend. The way it works is simple – each participant will draw five cards at once. Those participants will get a map of the rides they can go on. The player/rider with the highest poker hand at the end of the day wins the $500 grand prize. To increase the odds of winning a few extra bucks to spend over the weekend, there will also be second through eighth place payouts. But if you do decide to participate in the Run, which we truly hope you do, the real prize is riding some of the breathtaking, scenic roads throughout the state. Play your cards right by signing up for the run – there’s an endless amount of fun to be had here for riders of all skill levels. Winning is always fun, but even if you don’t come out ahead during the Poker Run, don’t worry because there will be an extensive pile of door prizes being given away throughout the weekend. Now, there are no sneak peeks

as to what will be given away this year, but last year’s door prizes and prizes were absolutely amazing. Honda donated a bike to be given away as a grand prize for the event – that’s right, a brand new, complete motorcycle. A Roadsmith trike conversion kit was also handed out, as was an Aspen Sentry camper, Arai helmets and so much more. Wing Ding is also the only international motorcycle convention to host a daily 50/50 drawing, plus a cumulative 50/20-15-10-5 that is awarded at Closing Ceremonies. Having a blast at Wing Ding is a sure bet, and it sure wouldn’t hurt to get in on a couple tickets to chance taking home some really great goodies. Hopefully, you strike it big and are able to cash in on a couple jackpots and will be looking to invest some of your winnings into a new bike. We aren’t trying to jinx your chances, we’re just practicing a little positive reinforcement. If you’re truly in the market for a new bike, don’t wait until you get back home to visit a dealership, as there will be manufacturer demo rides going on all weekend at Wing Ding. Even if you’re completely happy with your current bike, the manufacturer reps will be more than happy to walk you around their new models and let you take one, or all of them, for a test ride. Once you’ve taken a few spins around the block on the latest bikes in the biz, take a dip inside South Hall for the largest indoor trade show in the world geared toward Gold Wings and touring motorcycles. Here you’ll find everything under the sun as far as new parts and accessories, helmets, eyewear, jackets, protective gear, trailers, waxes and cleaners and so much more. Think of it as a gigantic candy store for motorcycle parts. This gathering of manufacturers and cutting edge wares is worth the price of admission alone. While at Wing Ding, you can outfit yourself with a new bike and dress it up with the latest add-ons on the market. Now, that’s all fine and good, but don’t forget to take the opportunity to sharpen the most important riding accessory you could ever own – your brain. There will be certified instructors onsite leading courses on advanced trailering and towing, as well as sidecar instruction and other workshops that will benefit both novice and seasoned riders. The Top Gun competition will also be taking place at Milton Frank Stadium, which is also geared toward improving road skills, but on a precision level. Motor officers from around the country, Canada and Mexico are trained for technical riding using this same exact system. This civilian course is patterned after the professional exercises, as it takes riders through a challenging course containing all sorts of twists and turns. Riders are judged not only on the time it takes to complete the course, but also how accurately the course is ridden. Touching or knocking over cones results in a lower score. The Top Gun

EVENTS

competition gets pretty intense, but participation alone will greatly increase riding knowledge and awareness. Wing Ding is as educational as it is enjoyable, which makes the trip that much more important to make. GWRRA has once again tied together an event that encompasses so much of what makes this community so great. And speaking of community, the traditional light parade will be taking place Thursday evening, just after the GWRRA entertainment event/dinner. Watching the brilliantly colored lights of the motorcycles flow is as beautiful of a sight there is – only a Fourth of July fireworks show could top this gorgeous spectacle. Friday will bring more of what Thursday had to offer with the added bonuses of the bike show and the incredible Huntsville MusicFest! Here, you’ll be treated to a live concert featuring Jeff Whitlow and The Old Barn Band serving hot country music licks that will certainly ignite the evening. Once the boys finish their set, Kozmic Mama will be performing the hits of Janis Joplin, James Brown and Ray Charles, just to name a few monumental recording artists. The second portion of the concert will be kicking off at Big Spring International Park, which is just right across from VBC. These two bands are merely the tip of the iceberg as more venues and artists will be joining the community-wide music spectacular. It’s amazing to see the city planning to surround its visitors with this kind of hospitality. It will be an evening not to be missed, that’s for sure. With the itinerary booked solid with things to do, see and learn, it will be to your advantage to start booking your trip to Huntsville, Alabama, sooner rather than later. Wing Ding is one of those events that die-hard Gold Wing riders just shouldn’t miss. Each and every one of these shows has been more spectacular than the last, and the 2015 edition shows every sign of continuing that trend. Ride in with a group of friends or come on down solo and make new ones – that is what this whole thing is about. Building and maintaining one big safe and happy family from coast to coast is GWRRA’s master plan, and the family keeps growing stronger with each passing year. With Members spread out in every corner of the country, it’s a rare and precious thing to get as many of them as possible to gather in one location. Wing Ding has become one of the events that very few choose to miss, and for very good reason. To stay tuned to the latest news and alwaysdeveloping list of events, visit wing-ding.org. Also be sure to stay connected with upcoming events by reading along in Wing World as September draws nearer. We will be bringing you exciting road trip maps and tips as Wing Ding 37 quickly approaches. See you soon! WINGWORLDMAG.COM

ALL ROADS LEAD TO WING DING BY RAY AND SANDI GARRIS, YOUR DIRECTORS OF GWRRA

A

s you plan your trip in September to Wing Ding 37 in Huntsville, Alabama, here is a new opportunity for you to increase the FUN before you even arrive at the Von Braun Center. We are putting together rides to Wing Ding from all over the country! A Ride Coordinator in each Region will supply a map showing their route from their Region to the famous “family reunion.” These maps will show the routes, probable stops for lodging, fuel and points of interest and mileage. As you plan your trip to Wing Ding, you are invited to join the ride in any manner you’d like. You can ride with the main group from start to finish or you can join a group in any town they preselected for that night’s lodging. You can even make reservations at the suggested lodging stops but ride with your own smaller group. It’s up to you based on your own comfort level of group riding. Our number one concern with these rides is “safety first” of all participants – All riders are encouraged to follow each guideline listed for “group riding” in GWRRA. The most important guideline is to “Ride Your Own Ride!” A drawing will be held at Wing Ding for Region Ride Coordinators. One of these 11 Coordinators will win “his and hers 3-1 jackets” ($400 value)! If you are interested, please contact your Region Director. We hope that you will incorporate all or part of this FUN idea in your plans to “Ride to Wing Ding!” Please check the Wing Ding website at www.wing-ding.org for map routes and more information regarding particular routes.

Approximate route from Duluth, Minnesota, to Wing Ding 37 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Editor’s Note: The map on this page is of Minnesota Chapter D’s ride to Wing Ding, which starts in Duluth, Minnesota, with eight people on five Wings. Visit www. wing-ding.org for details.

“TAKA” RE-CURVE WINDSHIELD LONG RIDE SHIELDS WWW.LONGRIDESHIELDS.COM “Taka” re-curve windshield for Honda Gold Wings reduces buffeting by more than 60 percent. Long Ride Shields followed the aerodynamics of the front fairing on the Gold Wing to allow the air to climb at the same angle and transition from the fairing onto the windshield without interruption. This allows air to follow the gentle re-curve at the top and lift the air at a slightly higher level than a traditional re-curve design. When the “Taka” shield was tested by GWRRA Members in Reno, Nevada, all test riders stated that the redirection of air around them and their passengers was significant, which ultimately resulted in a much smoother and more enjoyable ride. The “Taka,” offered in two sizes with several tint options, is made of FMRcoated Lexan polycarbonate with glass-coating on both sides. There is a one-year warranty. Pricing starts at $209.

PAYING IT FORWARD BY CARL AND JAN BREEDING, ALABAMA DISTRICT RIDER EDUCATORS

T

he May 2015 Wing World included an article we submitted, which we titled, “Find a Friend.” It was inspired by an experience where not only our present Chapter Educator Steve Kremer, but also Kevin Massey and Aaron McGuire of Alabaster, Alabama, helped us out when we encountered a major problem on the road. Now we can report that we have “paid it forward.” That was the direction we followed from our rescuer when we tried to pay for his assistance. We all encounter instances when we have to call on others for help because there are things we just can’t do for ourselves for one reason or another. Sitting beside the highway is bad enough when you have a flat, or run out of gas. What do you do when your alternator goes out and you are 300 miles from home on a busy interstate highway,

096

miles from a motel? It is bad enough in a car, but it is scarier being off to the side of the road on a bike. We have all been taught of the tendency to go where we are looking. Every driver that goes by the busy interstate highway is looking at your beautiful bike off in the grass – therefore increasing the danger that his vehicle will travel that direction. To make it worse, add in a 90-degree day with a storm visible and approaching – not very pleasant to contemplate. That’s where we were able to help someone else. Sunday, May 17 was one of those days where we were able to pay back what was given us. We were returning home from the Alabama District Rally when we noticed first, an Alabama state patrol car with a vehicle on the side of the road; then, just a short distance later, two trikes sitting on the grass with four people looking frustrated. We pulled over

to see what we could do to help. Talking with the riders, Dean Gentry and Pam Dafron, they explained that when the “battery box” was connected to the disabled trike, it ran. But when the box was disconnected, the trike stopped. To me that was a sign of alternator failure. At any rate, it was a problem that none of us knew how to fix standing by the highway with a storm coming. Luckily we had so much “stuff” to take to the rally that we had driven our truck towing my trike in a trailer so we could haul everything we needed for Rider Education and Motorist Awareness classes – decorations, door prizes and multiple costumes. So, I unloaded my trike, moved Dean’s trailer hitch to my trike, hooked his trailer to it and loaded his trike into our trailer. Dean and Pam then followed us on my trike to an exit about 10 miles down the road where I knew of some motels. Sure, we volunteered to take him on home, but he responded that he had already called someone to come get him with a truck. Oh, by the way, did we mention that we were 40 miles south of the Alabama and Tennessee state line, and he lives in Indiana? We knew that was an expensive breakdown,

and we would have been glad to take him further, but he insisted he was fine with the progress made toward helping him safely head home. The experience also highlighted the fact that facilities adequate for most motorcycles are often not enough for trikes with trailers. A towing company that could have taken his trike may not have been able to handle his trailer. We don’t leave Chapter Members alone when they have problems on a ride, which is one of the reasons for riding in a group. Dean’s traveling companions, Mark and Nina Dillon, didn’t leave them behind either. Mark followed us to the hotel to make sure everything was OK, and said they were going to wait for the storm to pass before continuing. They had to leave because Nina had to work on Monday, but they waited to make sure Dean and Pam were OK, and for the storm to pass. Our point? We all encounter instances when we need help. We also encounter occasions when we can help others. Don’t pass up the opportunity to “pay it forward” even if you haven’t needed help yet. Ride safe, have fun and we will see you on the highway.
