DIRECTOR’S LETTER
Where do we look for pride in GWRRA? Well, usually our reputation precedes us; we’re the group with those big beautiful motorcycles. Just look at the Bike Show — every entry features lots of pride! Most of our motorcycles carry that same pride with us wherever we go. It really shows up, day or night.
ALSO, IT MEANS “A FEELING OF HAPPINESS THAT YOU GET WHEN YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW DOES SOMETHING GOOD.” YEP, THIS WORD DOES BELONG TO GWRRA!

THE PRIDE OF GWRRA!
P
How about our vests? Every square inch of space is taken up with the pride we have regarding our membership and many accomplishments in GWRRA: positions held, Rider’s Education levels earned, Master numbers, training patches, instructor patches, conventions we have attended and wonderful places we have visited. Take a look around your own Chapter and you will see several examples of pride. How about those colorful Chapter shirts and hats, our outstanding newsletters, Chapter banners, vest patches, bike flags, scrapbooks, mascots, etc.? Yes, we are a very proud group. We have pride leading our way as we travel down the road and are compared to all other motorcycle groups by not only the public, but other motorcyclists as well. So, take pride in your Chapter and Association, and all they stand for: fun, safety and knowledge. Don’t forget to share this incredible experience with a friend or two real soon. They will thank you forever!
ride is a word that must belong to GWRRA. After all, it contains the word “ride.” Webster’s says that, besides referring to a company of lions, it means “a showy or impressive group.” Sounds a lot like our Association! Also, it means “a feeling of happiness that you get when you or someone you know does something good.” Yep, this word does belong to GWRRA! Let’s start with the pride Sandi and I have along with our Founder, Co-Founder, President, Team GWRRA and the Home Office Team have with all the Members of this incredible Association. There is not a day that goes by that we all are not reminded of how great our Members really RAY & SANDI GARRIS Your GWRRA Directors are. We are so proud of all our extended family! OCTOBER 2014

It’s also two weeks from our September issue being put to bed, and the fact that I’m writing ahead for the October issue seems so surreal that I’m wondering if I’m doing this all wrong. Our copy editor is going to think I’m nuts. Point is, I feel better now after one year at the helm, but I’m not getting complacent about where we are quite yet. There’s a lot more that I have planned for the magazine and I’m not stopping until it’s done. Let me take this moment though to thank my team for all they’ve done to make this past year happen. The Design team, Felicia and Keith; Stu, my favorite neighbor; all the Home Office staff for listening to my horrible travel stories; Ray and Sandi, an amazing Director duo who share an anniversary with me; Joel, who makes sure our copy is so fresh and so clean; the sales staff for hanging in there with me; and to all of you for taking the time to read these issues. Seriously, thank you.

received an internal email the other day that said, “Happy Anniversary! As of today, June 24, 2014, you have been with GWRRA for one full year!” Huh. One year. Didn’t seem like it had been a full year, but then I opened up my master spreadsheet for Wing World and noticed that I had to get cracking on the October 2014 issue, the one you’re holding right now, and October 2013 was my first release. I also was right about to leave for Wing Ding 36, and since Wing Ding 35 was my trial by fire last year, well, I guess it had been a year. Understand that producing the October 2013 issue was not fun. We had numerous design changes, problems with imagery, uncredited info and, most importantly, an editor in chief who didn’t quite yet understand what made GWRRA so special. When I said before that WD 35 was a trial by fire, I wasn’t kidding. I had no idea what I was getting into then, and as I put together that first issue, I was seriously questioning my decision to accept the position. But the October issue came and went, then November KEVIN WHIPPS and by the time December rolled around, we were talking Editor in Chief about redesigns and the like. Honda’s first six. At first, they couldn’t seem further apart. Two motorcycles: one a racebike, one a touring machine; one weighs 247 pounds, the other 904 pounds; one made today, the other almost 50 years ago. But both stand as perfect examples of the best of their kind: Honda’s RC166 racebike, and the 2014 Honda Gold Wing. The RC166 was Honda’s first genuinely successful six-cylinder motorcycle, followed later by the CBX and eventually the six-cylinder versions of the Gold Wing. But the entire displacement of an RC166’s engine can fit into a single cylinder of one of today’s ’Wings, with more than 50cc of breathing room.
And it worked. Mike Hailwood won the 250cc World Championship riding the factory RC166 in both 1966 and 1967, as well as the Isle of Man TT. Ever heard an RC166 run? It’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard before, a shriek as it tears down a straight away under load. If you were lucky enough to be at the Laguna Seca MotoGP race in 2005, Honda brought one of these museum pieces to their display. Best of all, they started and ran it twice a day over the weekend. Earplugs were mandatory, and when the engine hit 18 grand you felt it resonate through your chest — beautiful music.
team needed peak power, and they used their capacity for precision fabrication and design to achieve engine speeds no other bike could match. Gold Wing engineers used an identical cylinder count but completely different engine architecture to accomplish another goal: unparalleled smoothness with abundant power and torque well below the speeds where an RC166 will even idle. And just as the RC166’s power delivery made it a world champion on the racetrack, the Gold Wing’s smooth, broad powerband and low center of gravity are why it’s so easy to maneuver at lower speeds. Both bikes show how a path not taken by others can produce spectacular results. Few motorcycle builders ever attempt a six; none have been as successful as either the RC166 or the Gold Wing. Sharp-eyed Honda historians will note that in 1965 Honda fielded two other six-cylinder machines, the 3RC164, later renamed the RC165. But for just about everyone, the iconic “first” Honda six is the RC166, because it was the design that lasted, won the glory, and came to define the type. Until next month, ride safe.
While about as different as two motorcycles can be, the RC166 and the Gold Wing do much to illustrate Honda’s history of innovative solutions. With the RC166, the race

THE BACKGROUND Honda racebikes of the early 1960s were exclusively four-strokes, but they faced stiffer and stiffer two-stroke competition every year. The only path to success lay in higher engine speeds, which meant smaller cylinders, and more of them — and that’s exactly what Honda did with the RC166. The tiny bores are just over an inch and a half in diameter. The valves (four per cylinder) look more like nails, and the spark plugs like inch-long stubs cut from a number-two pencil, just 8mm in diameter. The crank was pressed up from 13 pieces, each about the size of a matchbox. The redline? An astronomical 18,000 rpm, practically unheard of by today’s standards and positively unimaginable fifty years ago. Output? About 62 horsepower. It was an engine only Honda could build, and it showcased the best of Honda’s capabilities in terms of not only R&D but manufacturing.

ehind safety, another important consideration for the typical Gold Wing owner is comfort and convenience, and I’m no exception. While I didn’t find great fault with the Honda footrests that came on my 2012 GL1800, I envied the casual posture and foot positions enjoyed by passengers. After all, they had an entire platform to move about on while I was confined to a very small and rigid piece of ergonomic real estate (and quite frankly, one that irritated my plantar fasciitis on long rides). So in the footsteps (pardon the pun) of items such as seats and extended highway pegs, aftermarket options abound in this category and floorboards (with or without heel-toe shifters) are common in the accessorizing arena.
What finally caught my eye was the latest rendition by Show Chrome from Big Bike Parts (Bigbikeparts.com). The company recently came out with a set of floorboards that replicate the size and configuration of the original equipment passenger boards, creating a seamless OEM pairing. They also have an excellent reputation for resilient chrome plating and include both a heel-toe shifter and oversized brake pedal, with a raised heel rest platform for the proper foot pressure angle when applying the rear brake. I have missed the dynamic and authoritative shifting that a heel-toe lever provides, a feature I grew accustomed to in my career as a motor officer, where I was spending eight hours a day on a similarly equipped motorcycle, and

was looking forward to resuming this experience. While suggested retail pricing is $380, a little bit of research on popular websites or negotiations at a dealer can steer you towards a better value. I managed to snap up a vendor’s competitively priced set at Wing Ding 36 in Madison, Wis., after having sat on a display bike equipped with a pair. You can mount them yourself with only Allen wrenches and some minor drilling on the OEM brake lever pad — despite the advertisement of “no drilling needed,” as a bolt is necessary for the new slip-on brake pedal. Incidentally, the brief instruction sheet does not do justice to the finished job, and so I offer a few helpful hints and cautions. For example, you’re instructed to loosen and remove the original rear brake lever and, once secured in a vise, drill a hole in the pad for bolting on the larger Show Chrome brake pedal. But in reality, once that’s done and you try to slip this lever back into place on the Wing, the fit is
so snug as you align splines that you will most certainly push the shaft so that it mounts farther into the bike. The solution to this is to have someone assist you and brace a tool (my son was pressed into service with a small, angled crowbar) beneath the bike and against the inboard end of this exposed shaft to prevent lateral movement, and allow you to forcefully push the modified OEM brake lever back into place before tightening. Another helpful hint would be to adjust the right side floorboard farthest to the rear before final tightening, in order for the new brake pedal to clear contact with the board (albeit by only slightly more than 1/16 of an inch), avoiding annoying contact, as it did get hung up occasionally. Lastly, make sure the pivot point on the heel-toe shifter is generously lubed with a lightweight household oil, as the additional weight of the heel-toe shifter bar can overwhelm the normal return strength of the OEM shift lever unless well lubricated. Once installed it was a pleasure to ride and it doesn’t take you long to develop the muscle memory of new foot positions associated with this accessory. Be advised that while Show Chrome will advertise the raised mini-platform on the right side as a “heel rest,” you will quickly discover that it truly exists for positioning the heel of your right foot in order to be vertically aligned with the new, higher brake pedal and enjoy complete and subtle control over rear braking pressure. It’s not a problem, just something to get used to. In conclusion, I found the quality of this product to be excellent, installation without dealer assistance realistic and, once I adjusted the heel-toe pegs several times to facilitate my foot size and riding style, a very comfortable addition to an already comfortable bike. View them online or at your local dealer for details (Part No. 52-834) and enjoy a useful accessory that will look like it came with — and belongs — on your Gold Wing!

VOLTAGE CONCERNS Stu, Well, I went out to get a fuse for the .300 A scale on my good VOM while leaving another in series and when I came back about an hour later, the drain was maintaining at a consistent level. I switched meters without losing the connection and it maintained the same, so after about 15 minutes I started to test things and star ted with the easy stuff: the plug for the readout controls under and in front of the key. I pulled it out and nothing changed. I put some dielectric grease on it and plugged it back in and noticed nothing, but by the time I had moved to the back of the bike to start checking out the wiring in the trunk hinge area, the meter started varying and then dropped to .00495 A. I’m not sure 1) why dielectric grease would make a difference when
being completely unplugged made no dif ference, and 2) why it would change after 2-3 minutes of being plugged in. I’m going to keep it on the charger when not riding and check it every couple of weeks to see if it starts drawing again. In another vein, I may have an idea of the cause of the decreased fuel mileage subsequent to this winter’s work of replacing the preload with the one you rebuilt for me, but it depends on your answer to the following question. Does the inherent error in the speedometer show in the odometer as well? The reason t hat t his mat ter s is that my daughter gave me a SpeedoHealer for Christmas and that was installed while things were opened up. The adjustment was .066 to true the speedometer up with an accurate G PS. This change would cause one fac tor for
sure, my driving faster (higher rpm) due to the speedo actually being accurate. The question above figures in because if the installation also impacted the odometer, recording the true mileage would have reduced my mileage by 6.6 percent, and if I add to that the increased time over 3,000 rpm, I can easily see myself getting to the 10 percentplus decreased mileage. So, what do you think of my hypothesis? Van F. Moore Salem, Ore. Van, AHA! The other half of the stor y (that I usually never hear). You’re correct that the rpm at any particular cruising speed will now be higher. For instance, your tach probably registered right around 3,000 rpm at 70 mph indicated (63

Depending on various things such as windshield size, externally mounted wind management accessories , etc., I suppose a 10 percent reduction in fuel mileage would be possible due to increased wind resistance alone, which also increases engine load. Regarding the odometer, I’m sure it was affected as well. In fact, when the GL1800 was a fairly new model, some owners expressed extreme outrage, claiming the odometer reading higher than actual mileage affected their warranty. After I reminded t hem t hat t he warranty wasn’t predicated on mileage, the squawking largely stopped. As for the delayed reduction in parasitic current flow, it actually could be explained by the dielectric grease. The GL1800 will exhibit a higher than normal parasitic load for a short time after the battery terminals are first connected. I’m not certain what component is responsible for that, but
it may be something in the display. Your playing with the connector may have corrected a faulty connection. Check the back side of that connector for loose wire strands that may have been creating a partial short to adjacent wires in the connector. Dielectric grease packed into the back side of the connector is intended to reduce this possibility. Stu
CAN’T START, WON’T START Stu, My son, who is an auto tech, is working on a friend’s 1997 SE, which quit running while on the road. He got it to start by using starting fluid and it ran for a while, but then quit and now it will not start. He has checked power to the fuel pump, but fuel flows out when the engine is cranked. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Jim Langan via email
Jim, First, tell your son to refrain from using starting fluid. That’s a great way to burn the bike to the ground — as well as the building in which it’s stored. Second, tell him to replace the fuel filter. A clogged filter may pass enough fuel to allow the engine to idle, but create enough flow restriction at speed to shut the engine down. To correctly test the fuel pump, tell him to make sure the key is switched off, then disconnect the engine control module connector. He then needs to short the black/white and black/blue connector wire terminals with a jumper wire. Finally, disconnect the fuel pump outlet hose from the fuel filter inlet. Holding the hose into a graduated beaker, turn on the key switch for exactly five seconds, then turn it off. Multiply the amount of fuel in the beaker by 12 to obtain the fuel flow per minute, which should be at least 640 cc (21.6 ounces). To check fuel pump operation when the ECM wires are plugged in, keep that hose in a beaker and simply hold

2002 Honda Gold Wing, which only had about 27,000 miles. We don’t ride it as much as we would like, as we have just put a little more than 16,000 miles on the bike. That said, we are on our third set of tires. The first time we changed them was after we had a blowout of the rear tire doing about 55mph. Luckily, I was able to maintain control of the bike, keep it upright and no
one was hurt. I then replaced both tires. After about 6,000 miles, the Dunlop Elite III Tires were cupping and I was told that I needed to replace them. Then again, after about another 5,000 miles on the new tires, cu p p i n g . Ye s te rd ay I b l ew out the valve stem of the rear tire, but fortunately, we didn’t have a blowout (the front valve stem was replace about 2,500 miles ago). I noticed the rear tire was starting to cup on the right side about 1,000 miles ago. The middle of the front tire is bulging around the entire circumference of the tire. Can you please explain why my tires are continually cupping and why I have to keep replacing my valve stems? My neighbor rides a 2000 Gold Wing and runs Elite IIIs and has no cupping. They have about 10,000 miles on the tires. Why am having to replace the tires so often? I always check the air in both tires before we take of f on a ride. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Donald J. Kaiser Paola, Kan. Don, Blowouts, cupping, bulging of the center portion of the tread around the entire circumference … these are all symptoms of severe and chronic underinflation. It could be the result of bead leaks or defective tire valves. I’m reaching here … do you have anything attached to the tire valves that increases either weight or bulk? Things like that increase strain on the valve at speed, possibly causing the failures. I hear you saying that you always check pressure in both tires before a ride, but do you? Really? And are you checking with

It’s also possible that your wheels haven’t been cleaned adequately at tire replacement and the residual dirt trapped under the bead is causing leaks. Whatever the cause of leakage, underinflation is the reason for the symptoms and short tire life. I guarantee it. Stu
THAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS Stu, I am hoping you can help my 2005 GL1800 with 48,000 miles. I’ve had several knowledgeable mechanics listen to my bike, but no answers. I’ve had some clutching issues this summer, but I changed the f luid and all seemed OK. But recently I noticed a ticking sound coming from the left side, and then at 2,500 rpm, a gear- grinding noise we all think is coming from the lower gearing or near the front of the motor. The motor sounds rough compared to ot her GWs w hen idling . When I pull my clutch in, the grinding sounds softer. Back to the clutching, it does slip (and not go into gear) when I try to shift up into the next gear. I don’t know if the two are connected but they seem to have appeared at the same time. My Chapter tells me not to ride it until I get the grindinggear noise fixed. Any idea as to what it may be and the best way to fix it? Christine Howland Arvada, Colo.

IGNITION : WORKBENCH Christine, Without the ability to hear your bike or feel what’s going on with the shifting, I’m not shooting completely in the dark, but I’m as close as one could come to it. Problems with the alternator drive gear have been known to cause the clicking you describe, but I haven’t heard of it producing gear-grinding noises. When we say a clutch slips, we’re not saying the transmission doesn’t go into gear, so your description there confuses me. Clutch slipping is a completely unrelated issue to your symptoms. The ticking, when added to the fact that it makes grinding noises and won’t go into gear, tells me there’s a good chance the gear engagement dogs are partially engaged in neutral (causing t he t icking) and t he dogs won’t mesh, possibly due to
an issue with a shift fork. But again, I’d need to be present to offer a more informed opinion. Take the bike to a genuine Honda dealership, let them listen and possibly ride it, and see if they agree with my assessment. I hope they don’t, because the cure would involve engine removal and complete disassembly — a costly fix, for sure. Stu Stu, I forgot to mention my bike is eating oil. I am not seeing ex ternal leaking, but I have to add one quart of oil every 600 miles. The grinding noise lessens when I add oil. Where does the oil go? I have used Amsoil and Mobil 1 synthetic oil. The shifting issue seems to only happen when moving
between 1st and 2nd on both acceleration and deceleration. Christine Howland Christine, The bike should NEVER be shifted down from 2nd to 1st while moving. Wait until the bike comes to a complete stop before shifting down into 1st. Other wise, you’re likely to hear some pretty nasty gear clashing. So, let’s talk about where the oil is going. The only way for oil to leave the bike is through leakage or oil burning. How low on the dipstick is the level after 600 miles? Is the bike level (on the center stand) when you check the oil? Is there any smell of oil or smoke visible at the tailpipes? Stu

IGNITION : WORKBENCH Stu, I check the oil on the center stand. It will lose about a quart (down to the middle line) of the “good” oil, or 2-3 quarts (non-visible on the stick) of the Honda oil, after 600 miles. No one has found oil or seen smoke from my pipes. There are no droppings on the ground. Christine Howland Christine, I love a good mystery, especially after it’s solved. But trying to solve one like this over the Internet can be an especially frustrating experience … for both of us. I’m not sure what you mean by “middle line.” There’s an upper level line and a lower level line. The dipstick should be lowered into the engine until the plastic cap seats on the crankcase — do not screw it in at all. One quart lost in 600 miles is totally unacceptable, while two to three quarts would be preposterous. If the bike isn’t leaking or burning oil, one other place it could go would be into the cooling system, past a defective head gasket. Still, if you’ve now poured more than a gallon of additional oil into the filler hole and if it had “disappeared” into the cooling system, my hunch is that you’d have an oily mess being purged from the coolant overflow bottle and onto the pavement. Because that isn’t the case, I think we can safely dismiss the possibility of a faulty head gasket. So grasping at straws here, there’s a remote possibility that the scavenge rotor of the oil pump isn’t doing its job. That would cause the rear engine case to fill with oil and create the illusion that oil was disappearing mysteriously. It would also cause the clutch plates to drag and act as if the clutch wasn’t disengaging fully when the clutch lever was squeezed. Could this be the cause of your gear clashing when trying to shift? One way to detect this issue would be to fully drain the engine oil, then remove the outer clutch cover. Be sure to have a pan under the cover capable of holding several quarts. If much oil actually does drain from the clutch chamber when the cover is removed, inspect the scavenge pump oil strainer, located under the clutch assembly in the bottom rear of the case. Aside from someone accidentally dropping a piece of paper or foil into the oil filler hole, I’ve seen two instances where a clutch repair was performed and old gasket remnants which weren’t removed from the case had clogged the strainer. IGNITION : WORKBENCH TIRE AGE Stu, I have a 2005 Gold Wing and a 1995 PC800. This is a question about tires on the PC800, but it’s really just a general tire concern. Five years ago I bought a set of Metzeler ME880s from the Honda dealer for the PC and had them installed there. The tires are both in very good condition, with plenty of tread lef t. They appear f ine, with no cracks or external signs of aging, but I’ve recently checked the “made by” date and the rear tire was four years old when installed, so it’s now nine years old. Is this rear tire safe? I hope to ride the bike a little over three more years (I turn 77 in September). Should I just yell at the dealer and then bite the bullet and put two new tires on? Ones that actually are new? Gordon Booth Asheville, N.C. Gordon, I wouldn’t yell at the dealer. The tech who installed those tires likely doesn’t even know where the date code is, let alone how to decode it. Metzeler 880s are pretty fast-selling tires, so I’m surprised the ones delivered to your dealer were four years old. I’m sure if you’d known at the time, you’d have rejected them. And that’s what you should do now. A nine-year-old tire has hardened to the point it could lose traction in conditions that wouldn’t affect a tire of more recent manufacture. We’d sure like to see you make it to 80 — at least! Stu

THE HAND OF FATE Meet Mike Mitchell, the positive influence.
BY KEVIN WHIPPS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARL SCHULTZ

ou know Mike Mitchell. If you’ve been to a Wing Ding in the past seven years, you’ve seen him at least once or twice, maybe heard him laugh as he walked by, or possibly watched him work on the sidelines during Opening Ceremonies. He’s omnipresent at the yearly event, which means that you have to work real hard not to see him and his infectious smile. But things weren’t always so great for Mitchell. At one point in his life, he wasn’t sure what exactly his future would hold. But instead of resigning himself to staying negative, he flipped things around and made it a positive. As they say, all things happen for a reason, right?

THE MAN Home for Mitchell has always been Richmond, Va., although that’s not always where he has lived. His father was an elementary school principal and during the summers he worked in an exchange program. This meant he would travel to various school systems across the U.S. and Canada to give workshops to teachers, and as a side benefit, make some extra cash during those free months. It also meant there was a road trip planned for the family and that’s where the touring bug first hit Mitchell. Come high school, things were progressing along nicely, as things do when you’re young and have no idea what life is going to throw your way. For Mitchell, his life completely changed at 17 when his girlfriend became pregnant with their
daughter. He was already working at West End Machine & Welding in Richmond while taking a machine shop class in the vocational program at his high school and suddenly the money became a large priority. “I decided work [and] making money was more important than going to school,” he says. “I wasn’t going to college. I’d decided that this was kind of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I left home [and] we rented a house.” His daughter was born just a week after he turned 18. “It was challenging. It was challenging,” he repeats, looking back on that time of his life. Things with him and his girlfriend weren’t destined to be and although they still have a close relationship today, the two separated shortly after their daughter was born.
“It was a difficult experience at the time, but I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” Mitchell says confidently. “Looking back, it was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me because it made me grow up. It made me become responsible.” As a result, his bond with his daughter is strong as ever and that now follows with her daughter — his granddaughter. A s the years progressed, Mitchell continued working at the machine shop, working his way up the ladder as he went. His hard work and dedication caught the owner’s attention. “[The owner] very rapidly took a shine to me [and] took me under his wing. By the time I was 22 years old, I was basically doing what I’m doing now: I was running the shop.”

Along the way he met a woman with a daughter of her own. The two hit it off quickly. “You know, we started dating in ’91 and got married in ’95, but we always said we were married from the second date.” Being that the two both had children from previous relationships, things could have been difficult. Fortunately, Mitchell had that problem solved. “My wife tells everybody that I married her to get to Jenna, her daughter. She’s just an absolute joy and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to even become her dad.” As for his life at the machine shop, it still continues today, except now he has a different role. “Now I’m the vice president of the company and I’m in the process of buying it.” That’s right, if all goes according
to plan, Mitchell will soon be the owner of the same company he was working at when he was 17 years old. Ever y thing happens for a reason, right? THE BIKES Mitchell started on two wheels when he was 21. In a story familiar to anyone who found themselves with a rebellious streak once they moved out of their parent’s home, he purchased a Honda Twinstar 250 the moment he landed in that first apartment. “My mother would not allow me to have a motorcycle while I was at home, so the first thing I did was I ran out and I bought a bike.” Six months later the 250 was traded for a 450 and soon he was riding all over the area. “I still remember
to this day riding 75 miles one day and thinking I’d conquered the world.” Soon thereafter, he realized that he wanted to get into more long-distance riding. That meant yet another bike and another trade-in. Out went the 450 and in its place went a brand-new Honda Silver Wing GL500 that he happily rode for a long time. From there it was an ’83 Gold Wing, then a Kawasaki Voyager 1200 and then his first new Gold Wing, a ’93 Interstate. Today, he rides a 2012 GL1800 in blue, a bike that he didn’t expect to purchase. “I got to ride in the press ride. Didn’t even want an 1800. I still had a 1500,” he explains. “I said, you know, ‘It’s set up the way I like it. It’s not worn out.’ I told my wife, I said, ‘No, don’t worry, I’m not gonna get one.’” Whoops.

For Mitchell, the overall appeal of the touring lifestyle his adult life as well. GWRRA brought him out of his shell. initially was about taking his childhood cross-country tours to “You ask my wife today, she’ll say, ‘I don’t know [where] the next level. “Being on a motorcycle, originally, it became this guy came from.’” Since that first meeting, Mitchell’s involvement in the about going further. He’s now ridden several Iron positions, including Assistant Chapter Director, Chapter Butt rides and done tons of general long-distance riding. Director, Assistant District Director, Deputy Director and “There’s nothing like the scenery from the motorcycle.” Part of the appeal also comes “I’M NOT A WATCHER,” MITCHELL SAYS. “I’M NOT A from the Gold Wing itself, a marriage COUCH POTATO, I’M A PARTICIPATOR.” between machinery and pavement that makes him happy to ride. “It’s the greatest touring bike built, as far as I’m concerned.” It’s also more. “You know, I’ve spent many, many, many years as ready to go, no matter when he wants to ride. “[The] Gold [an] operation Officer and absolutely loved every position Wing is the most dependable vehicle I’ve ever owned. I had,” he says, but one that he particularly enjoyed was when he was Region Director. “We had a staff that I would Bar none.” put up against any staff anywhere — anywhere in time in GWRRA. A good friend of a lot done as a result. “I wouldn’t trade any day of that for his was involved in the Association and he kept pushing a million dollars.” His involvement with Wing Ding came in 2007, after Mitchell to go to a meeting, but he didn’t think it was right. “I’m like, ‘You know, I’ve got a Voyager, that doesn’t jive.’” he stepped down from his role as Region Director. After But no matter how many times his friend explained that a phone call from Ed Price about getting involved in the the manufacturer didn’t make a difference, Mitchell still event management side of things, he decided that it made a lot of sense to help out with the event he’s attended for decided against it. But when he purchased his first Gold Wing, all bets so many years. “I’m not a watcher,” Mitchell says. “I’m not were off. At the time, the local Chapter had an arrangement a couch potato, I’m a participator.” That’s why he’s been such an omnipresent fixture at with the local Honda shop, and every time a new Wing left their floor, they would call up the Chapter to give them every Wing Ding since. You may have seen him and not the new rider’s contact information. At the same time, registered his face as someone you know, and that would Mitchell’s friend discovered the new motorcycle in the stable be understandable. Mitchell is the high-tempo kind of guy and invited him out to an official meeting. But before that who likes to run across hallways and zing around in golf happened, Mitchell decided to go to a parade at the state carts trying to test their top speeds. And most importantly, fair in Richmond. “And immediately people just grabbed me he knows how to have a good time. “I wake up every day up [and] took me under their wing.” Joining the Association going, ‘It’s good to be alive, it’s good to remember I’m here, it’s good to be able to walk, it’s good to be able to was a no-brainer by that point. Signing up wasn’t the end of his participation, however, pay my bills.’” and that’s mostly thanks to a very engaging Chapter Director at the time. “And he never said, ‘Come on and go THE BEGINNING with us,’ he said, ‘We’re gonna pick you up. We’re gonna At the tender age of 52, some would argue that Mike Mitchell pick you up. We’re gonna pick you up.’” That made the still has a lot more riding left in him, and he certainly has no difference for Mitchell, and even though he found that plans to stop. Things, as they say, are good, but he says it many of the Members in his Chapter were older than him, best. “I’ve got a great life! WING DING 36 Lighting up the lakes in Madison.
BY DESMOND PEARTREE, CARL SCHULTZ & KEVIN WHIPPS
C
apturing the magic that is a Wing Ding is an extraordinarily difficult task. From a technical standpoint, almost everything that can trip you up is available and required. There are multiple lighting scenarios, making it difficult to choose what to shoot with for what occasion. Subjects range from people to motorcycles to dogs. On a good day, you can take more than 1,000 photos and that’s on just one camera. From an emotional standpoint, getting the spirit of a Wing Ding in imagery is a tough task as well. Organizationally, getting photographers where they need to be when they need to be there with tight time restrictions between events isn’t a lot of fun, either. There’s a lot to do — and it’s even worse if there’s just one person involved or you’re relying on other people to do your work for you. For all those reasons and more, we decided to do things differently this year. For Wing Ding 36, we brought in a team of photographers to cover the event top to bottom. If you were in Madison this year, chances are pretty good you saw one of them out in the crowd, usually toting a large SLR camera with a media badge around their neck. Between the three of them, almost every angle and event was captured on a memory card. At the end of the week, there were more than 6,000 photos to go through and edit, tweak, tune and sort — a monumental task for anyone to accomplish. What we’re left with is the biggest Wing Ding coverage that we’ve had in recent years, coming in at 34 pages, and still, it’s not enough. Frankly, we could fill this entire magazine with pictures from Madison and still run out of space, as we’ve amassed that many photos. Point is, if you saw someone with a camera at Wing Ding this year, they probably looked either very frazzled or super relaxed (stress affects some people in funny ways). With that in mind, take a moment and check out our coverage of Wing Ding 36 in Madison, Wis. We think you’ll like it.

ROCKET CITY ROAD TRIP YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS A THING. BY JESSICA CARLTON
H
untsville, Ala., aka the Rocket City, is thrilled to be your host for Wing Ding 37! September 2015 will be here before you know it, so here’s some info on the community, as well as the region, that we hope you’ll find useful. Huntsville is centrally located in the Southeast, less than a four-hour ride from Atlanta, Ga.; Memphis, Tenn.; Knoxville, Tenn., and Montgomery, Ala. Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala., and Chattanooga, Tenn., are all within two hours. Travel is fastest via Interstate 65 and US 72, but we’re also near the Natchez Trace Parkway, which features some of the most scenic and uncluttered countryside in the nation. Have fun planning your route and leave plenty of time to explore once you’re here. In the coming months, we’ll be providing you the latest info for the local attractions along with special events to enjoy during your visit. Watch for info on the No. 1 tourist attraction in the state, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center; the home of the nation’s largest openair butterfly house, the Huntsville Botanical Garden; the largest collection of art by American women at the Huntsville Museum of Art; and the largest hands-on history museum in the South, the EarlyWorks Children’s Museum. These and many more attractions will all be featured in coming issues. We’ll also be providing information on special events and activities which will be held prior to, during and just after Wing Ding 37, so you can make your travel plans accordingly. There’s so much to do and see, we know you’ll want to allow enough time for your Rocket City road trip. In addition to all of the great things to do right here in
Huntsville and Madison, Ala., there are lots of memorable experiences waiting just about an hour or so away. Ivy Green, birthplace of Helen Keller, is to our west in Tuscumbia, Ala. Nearby in Florence, Ala., you can also see the only Frank Lloyd Wright house in the state. Check out the birthplace of W.C. Handy, the Father of the Blues, while you’re exploring the Shoals. To our north in Lynchburg, Tenn., you can visit the Jack Daniel Distillery. In Scottsboro, Ala., to our east, you’ll find the worldfamous Unclaimed Baggage Center. It’s the perfect place to find a deal on some misplaced treasures. Ave Maria Grotto, a miniature reproduction of Jerusalem, is located in Cullman, Ala., which is to our south. Catch these regional attractions on your way in, on your way home or as a quick day trip while you’re here. As you can see, there’s plenty to do, and we haven’t even mentioned all the attractions, points of interest and awesome activities that await once you arrive in Huntsville. With more than two dozen hotels to choose from, all offering special rates for Wing Ding 37, along with several campgrounds in close proximity, you’re sure to find just the right place to relax after exploring the sights and sounds unique to the area. Check out our website — Huntsville.org — for the latest. It’s chock-full of visitor info with plenty of photos, so you can plan now and make the most of your visit. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center at 500 Church Street Northwest when you arrive. We’ve got complimentary discounted attraction admission coupons available, and discounts for sporting events and arts and entertainment events as well. We’re open seven days a week and can’t wait to see you!

T
he state of Nevada will be hopping with excitement as Wingers from all over the country will be pouring in for Reno Rendezvous on June 18-20, 2015. While in town, there will be so much for you to see and do around the Grand Sierra Resort. Live music, manufacturer demos, a bowling tournament and pool party, and much more will be on the stacked schedule of events, but there’s a lot more than just what lies within the city’s boundaries. If you’ve had enough of the sounds of attention-hungry slot machines and the casino crowds, round up some pals and saddle up for an awesome little loop that starts just 12 miles south of your hotel room. The major destination on the loop is a little mining town called Virginia City, which we’ll get to in a second. The whole loop is about 50 miles long and Virginia City is only the first major stop along the way for sightseers, but believe us, there’s enough there to keep you all day. From the start of the loop at NV-314 East, ride it down 15 miles through some pretty twisty road
segments as well as nice open stretches. After a short cruise from Reno, you’ll have arrived at what will no doubt be one of your most memorable stops in a while. One of the more notable attractions in Virginia City is the Ponderosa Ranch, which may sound familiar to some of you. The Ponderosa was the fictional setting for the 1960s television series Bonanza. The ranch here, which was a theme park up until 2004 when the land was sold to an Incline Village developer, is actually no longer available for public viewing, but it’s still a key part of this area’s history. Who knows, maybe if you ask around town, someone might know someone who has a secret connection or some kind of an “in” to get you close to what was once a must-see location for fans of the show as well as those titillated by Western history. Lake Tahoe contractor Bill Anderson worked with the film crew on location at the ranch and assisted in building prop building facades and roads around the house, and in 1967, Anderson’s exact

READERS’ RIDES
p JOHN & MARGIE BOLLIG 2006 GOLD WING GL1800 / FOND DU LAC, WIS.
In Wisconsin you don’t have to ride very long or very far to have a nice trip. My wife Margie and I enjoy taking in the beautiful back roads of our state. Here’s a shot of us parked on Main Street in the tiny village of Eden, about 10 miles southeast of our home in Fond du Lac.

t MARK & JOANNA BOATMAN GL1800 / BIXBY, OKLA.
We spent a week in Durango, Colo., in June of this year. Our adventures took us on rides to Telluride, Four Corners, Mesa Verde and Silverton. Red Mountain Pass was closed all week because of an avalanche, but it finally opened on Friday the 13th. We took our chances since we’re not all that superstitious and headed to Ouray for the day. We took this picture at the south end of Red Mountain Pass. t MELVIN JANTZEN & JOLYNN HUME 2012 GOLD WING GL1800 / NEW ALBANY, IND.
This is my 2012 GL1800 Roadsmith trike that we rode on our 5,000-mile trip across the Western U.S. This photo was taken on our ride through the Avenue of Giants, a beautiful ride among the Redwoods in Northern California. I wouldn’t want to do it any other way than on a Wing.
t MIKE RAND 2001 GOLD WING GL1800
Here is a picture of my 2001 GL1800 at the entrance to Canada. I had left Victorville, Calif., the day before and rode Highway 395 as far north as I could without a passport. I built the camper myself. It’s just big enough for me to crawl in and go to sleep. For those who wonder, it weighs right at 400 pounds when in travel mode. It’s been getting quite a bit of use since completion.
