fter Paul (Founder) and Shirley (Co-founder) decided to form a group of Gold Wing riders into Gold Wing Road Riders Association, their first concern was, “How do we keep everyone safe?” After 39 years, the answer to that question is even more important today than ever. GWRRA has the most comprehensive Rider Education Program offered by any motorcycle organization in the world. The best part is that enrollment in this program is free! Yes, you can enroll today in Level One of our Rider Education Program – for FREE! This incredible program is supported by trained Rider Educators in every Chapter who can enroll you and assist you as you progress in the four Levels available. The program is also supported with lots of seminars and classes both on and off the motorcycle and/or trike. When you took your first motorcycle driving class and each one after that, you learned many skills that make you a better and safer driver, and/or co-rider. All of these skills are considered perishable. That means you need to practice these skills often or you will lose them. As soon as you get enrolled in Level One, you will want to set your sights on Level IV – Master Tour Rider or Co-rider. Once you have accomplished this realistic goal, you will join the cream of the crop in experienced, well-trained riders and co-riders in not only GWRRA but also any other motorcycle organization. You then can proudly display your numbered Master Tour Rider or Master Tour Co-rider patch prominently on your vest. We are now passing #10,000! These special Members are highly trained as experienced riders and co-riders and are trained in First Aid and CPR and carry a first-aid kit on their two-, three- or four-wheel vehicles. When you are group riding with your Chapter, take notice of these distinctive patches on the vests belonging to your riding companions. That means you are traveling with

those who can help you enjoy a safe and enjoyable trip. When you see that Master’s patch, please stop and thank that Member for their extra effort in helping us all to be safe when we ride our two-, three- or fourwheel vehicles. Have FUN!

t’s astounding to know that over 30 million people operate a motorcycle in the U.S. That’s a lot of folks in the saddle. That’s over three times the population of New York City, which the U.S. Census Bureau put at 8,550,405 in 2015. And of that 30 million motorcycle riders, approximately 7.5 million are women. Seven and a half million! In other words, about one in four riders (including co-riders) is female according to a 2015 Motorcycle Industry Council Owner Survey. Other interesting survey results from the MICOS owner survey include: • The median age for female motorcyclists is 39 versus 48 for males. • New bikes are preferred over used by 57 percent of female riders. • 49 percent of female motorcyclists are married. • 47 percent of female motorcyclists have a college or post-graduate degree. • Female riders are safety-conscious. Sixty percent of women took a motorcycle safety course.

NOVEMBER
2016-11_2_fob_Editor'sLetter.indd 10
• Slightly more than 17 percent of Gen X owners, and 17.6 percent of Gen Y owners, are women. Among Boomer owners, women represent 9 percent. • Cruisers are the choice of 34 percent of female riders. • From some 48,000 American households, women were also asked to share their top three reasons for riding motorcycles. They answered “fun and recreation,” followed by “sense of freedom” and “enjoy outdoors/nature.” • When it comes to purchasing a motorcycle, women rate “fuel economy” and “test rides” as the most important decision-making factors. Anyone who attended Wing Ding 38 saw firsthand how many women ride their own bike. From President Anita Alkire, who has ridden her own machine for over 10 years after being a co-rider for seven, to others who have started more recently. And just as equally extraordinary and important are Gold Wing Road Rider Association’s numerous co-riders,
including GWRRA Co-founder and Co-rider Shirley Stephens-Garcia. This issue of Wing World celebrates the women who make up the ranks of Gold Wing Road Riders Association and are integral to its programs and successes. They include women such as Trish Adams, whom Zach Bon talks about in his article, “Making a Difference.” Adams has been an advocate for motorcyclists in her community on a large and unique level. Her diligence has influenced motorist awareness and awareness about Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Similarly, we have an article and tips from Terri Bockhaus who, as a drill team member, influenced Danita Standford. After watching Bockhaus ride, Standford decided to give it a try and rode with the International Formation Eight, an impromptu drill team, at Wing Ding 38. We tell the story of several other GWRRA women and also provide an informative article about helmets from Women on Wheels (WOW). Also in this November issue, we pay our respects to GWRRA veterans. We honor and thank those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. For more on the history of Veterans Day, visit http://www.va.gov/ opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp. In closing, I want to thank everyone who attended the Meet the Editor seminar at Wing Ding, took the time to speak with me (and/or Craig) or stopped to let me take a photograph. Your feedback and suggestions about Wing World are appreciated. Equally significant, your friendship (and hugs) is treasured. Stay in touch. CORRECTIONS The TomTom Rider device in the September issue of Wing World had the wrong product name and retail price. The correct information is listed on the previous page. We apologize for the error.
On page 40 in the September issue, we published an article titled “Fluid Flush” by Member George R. Woodside. Your Editor forwarded me the article and asked that I look it over for technical correctness. Though I scanned it, I missed a critical error and must apologize to you all (and to the dealerships) for that lack of thoroughness. Mr. Woodside stated that his dealer told him that the current brake Technical Service Bulletin involves replacing both the front and rear brake fluids, and he therefore assumed “that leaves only the clutch fluid to be replaced.” That last statement is not correct. Though fluid is indeed to be flushed at the anti-dive value, as well as at two of the front caliper bleed screws, the two remaining front bleed screws, which are associated with the front brake lever, are not addressed in the Tech Service Bulletin. The following is text from a letter we received from a Honda dealership. In your latest issue of Wing World, the article “Fluid Flush” written by George R. Woodside, contains some inaccurate statements. The article states “... the recall involves both the front and rear brake fluids. That leaves only the clutch fluid to be replaced ...” The braking system on the GL1800 Gold Wing is linked, and yes, some of the brake fluid in the front calipers is replaced, however, the front brake fluid is not replaced as part of the recall. This has created several problems for my dealership and has made many of our customers second guess our expertise and knowledge. Some have even been very angry, aggressive and yelling at us about it. We take pride and think we are the best at what we do and have a large customer base of Gold Wing riders that trust us to repair and maintain their motorcycles. Please print a retraction in your next issue, and contact me if more information is needed. Thank you.
I can certainly understand how this erroneous statement might create issues for dealerships performing the brake recall strictly according to the TSB, with some owners having read our article and believing they should have received a complete brake system flush, perhaps at no charge for the lever brake system. Please, don’t beat on your dealers for
IGNITION
QUICK HITS
this, because the TSB is very specific and doesn’t address the lever fluid lines. But really, if lack of brake fluid flushing is claimed to be the cause of the brake problems being addressed, does it make any sense to assume the worst about the pedal fluid lines while ignoring the likelihood that the lever lines have received the same lack of maintenance? It may make perfect sense to a person concerned with warranty cost containment, especially if the fluid in the lever lines isn’t directly involved in the problems being addressed, but it certainly makes no sense otherwise. Anyone presenting their GL1800 for the brake recall would be well advised to ask their dealer to also flush the front lever brake lines. There are only two bleed screws involved, plus the front master cylinder reservoir, so it shouldn’t involve much expense. Then you will indeed be good-to-go ... except for the clutch fluid. Have that flushed as well, and enjoy the next two years or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, without any need to think about the brake or clutch hydraulics. Stu Oltman, Wing World Senior Technical Editor
LETTERS George Woodside’s article on flushing hydraulic clutch fluid was great. Anyone with a little mechanical knowledge should be able to do a lot of their own maintenance on their Gold Wing. Just two suggestions when it comes to hydraulic brake and clutch fluids: I have numerous sacrificial towels, but when it comes to hydraulic fluids, I don’t want to take any chance that fluid will soak through to the paint so I buy a cheap plastic drop cloth, cut out a little square the size of the brake or clutch reservoir, tape around the edges, and then drape it over the rest over the bike. The second suggestion is to put out a few dollars to buy “speed bleeders.” Speed bleeders are bleeders that have one-way valves so that you do not need a helper to complete your task. As George suggests, you hook up your tube from the bleeder to a container, but at that point you can safely open the bleeder a quarter turn, move back to the clutch or brake, keeping an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir, and pump the brake or clutch, knowing that air will not enter the system through the one-way valve, and proceed until the new fluid has replaced the old. Barri Critzman and her husband, Mike, with their Gold Wings and MINI Coopers.
INCREDIBLE DISAPPEARING
MOTORCYCLE TRICK BY BARRI CRITZMAN
I
love my MINI Cooper. My husband, Mike, has a Clubman MINI Cooper. My MINI, however, is better – and smaller – much smaller. I have a two-seater MINI Hardtop Roadster. It is black with brushed aluminum racing stripes. It has a performance package suspension, six speed manual transmission, turbo with a turbo output gauge, tachometer and custom Borla exhaust. We call it the Gnatmobile, in homage to the much more famous (but much less fun) Batmobile. Why am I talking about my MINI? I was in the Gnatmobile on my way home from lunch with friends when I saw a small motorcycle and rider. Both the rider and bike were small – the bike a little 250 Honda. Now, you have to imagine the road. It is a frontage road with two lanes on either side and on my side is a fence separating the freeway from the road. I was driving north and freeway traffic, on my right, was moving south. I was in the number one lane with the Honda rider on my right. I saw him quite clearly as I stopped at a light. He was wearing every bit of gear he could find – and in every color! This is why I saw him in the first place. When the light turned green I accelerated. I looked in my rear view mirror. Where was the motorcycle? I looked in the side mirror. Head checks. No motorcycle. I looked quickly around to make sure he wasn’t passing me. No motorcycle. I was so concerned that I looked quickly to all three mirrors to make sure he wasn’t down or on the shoulder of the road. Nope, he wasn’t there either!
014
I believe in a lot of things, but motorcycles and riders do not normally disappear into the 11th dimension. I knew the rider was there and I was determined to find him. As I came to a stop to make a left hand turn, I saw him. He was tucked away in my MINI’s blind spot, just to the right and behind my right quarter panel. Had I moved to the number two lane, I would have knocked him down and the car behind him would have rolled over on him. The sports bike rider did virtually everything correct. It took less than four seconds for the events described to occur. The rider’s only mistake was to venture into my blind spot. But here’s the thing – the rider was moving and shifting gears, and so was I. My MINI is not a big car with lots of blind spots. It’s not an 18-wheeler with blind spots that can hide tanks and small planes. My MINI is a tiny car with tiny blind spots, and it very capably hid a motorcycle and rider. The takeaway is this: I ride, so I actively look for other riders. I have gone down, so I am always aware of riders near me. What if this had been a motorist who did not ride – driving a compact or midsize vehicle – who didn’t see the rider, who didn’t pay attention, who was not tracking the rider and who was not looking for something that was clearly not there? Talk to motorists. Tell people you ride. Believe in Motorist Awareness. It can save a life. Barri Critzman is GWRRA #304311-01. She and her husband, Mike, are Motorist Awareness Directors. They live in Victorville, California.

HOW ONE PERSON MADE A DIFFERENCE IN VIRGINIA BY ZACH BON
T
rish Adams wasn’t looking for recognition. Yet she was honored by the governor of Virginia June 27, 2016 at the state capital for her motorcycle awareness work with high schools in southeastern Virginia. Adams and her husband, Dan, have been riding motorcycles for 35 years. It wasn’t until Adams joined GWRRA in 2009 that her interest in safe riding on the road developed. She attended numerous motorcycle safety seminars and became intrigued as to how she could pass this information to others. Trish stayed after a seminar to talk with GWRRA Trainers, letting them know she wanted to get involved. The idea to establish motorcycle awareness events in her area was suggested. So she brought this information back to her Chapter, VA-L. Not only did they like the idea, they responded with, “How can we help?” A local Kmart gave permission to use their parking lot for the initial event. A local over-the-road truckdriving school brought one of their 18-wheelers to the lot where Chapter motorcycles were positioned in various blind spots. This allowed visitors to see how motorcycles can be hidden from view. Adams organized five of these events but wanted to reach students in schools. Her research revealed that a large percentage of motorcycle accidents involving another vehicle were from left-hand turns involving teenagers. That was when Adams knew what she really wanted to do – inform young drivers who were getting new driver licenses about Look Twice and Save a Life. She attended a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) class that targeted safe riding. After, she contacted local high schools in southeastern Virginia about bringing motorcycle safety into the schools. That was five years and over 10,000 students ago. Adams says, “We now coach Driver Education classes at five different high schools in the Suffolk and Chesapeake area of Virginia. We also just started expanding the program with a few schools in Virginia Beach.” Her presentation includes video, a talk about facts and laws, and hands-on experiences. Students get the opportunity to don the gear to get the feel of wearing it. This also provides them a chance to
016
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Trish Adams
experience the visibility restrictions of a helmet. Adams always ends her program with the students repeating, “Look twice and save a life.” It is very gratifying for Adams to see the students’ faces light up when they realize they can save a life by being observant. Hundreds of students have thanked Adams for her program and told her they too have gotten a motorcycle license. As a result of the program’s impact within Virginia high schools, Adams was selected as the recipient for the 2016 Governor’s Transportation Safety Award in Motorcycle Safety. Adams and her husband spent the day at the state mansion, a national historic landmark, meeting Governor Terry McAuliffe and other award recipients. During the recognition ceremony, Adams heard some information she found incredible. In Virginia, if a young driver is in an accident involving a motorcycle, the state can check to see if the driver attended Adams’ program. To date, none of the auto/motorcycle accidents involved drivers attending the program. Zach Bon, GWRRA #342418, is VA-L Chapter Director, Senior University Trainer, Virginia District Trainer, Newsletter Editor and Master Tour Rider, Level 4.

GIVE ME A BRAKE. Three is better than two, and two is better than one. What’s true for slices of pizza or chances to win the lottery is also true of your Gold Wing’s braking system. Here’s a deeper dive into what makes your Gold Wing stop so well.
rear brakes can increase braking potential. The current Gold Wing is equipped with Honda’s Combined Braking System (CBS). Squeezing the front brake lever applies the front brake and a
We probably all grew up riding motorcycles with separate front and rear brakes, but probably none of us have ever driven a car with brakes where all four wheels weren’t linked. Most bicycles today still have separate front and rear brakes, but many models in Honda’s 2017 streetbike lineup link their front and rear brakes in different ways. Let’s take a look at how your Gold Wing’s brakes work together to help you stop in a safe, secure manner.
Why link the front and rear brakes? The DOT requires that motorcycles have both a front-brake lever on the right handlebar and a rear-brake pedal on the same side. (Old-timers will remember European bikes with the shifter on the right and the brake lever on the left.) Between 70 and 75 percent of your bike’s stopping power comes from the front brake—even more as you begin to stop and the weight transfers to the front end. This is why you have two big brake discs up front and one smaller disc on the rear.

Which was the first Honda to offer linked brakes? The Gold Wing, naturally—the 1983 GL1100 to be exact. The system has changed over the years, and different Honda streetbikes get different systems.
portion of the rear. Pressing down on the rearbrake pedal applies the rear brake and a portion of the front brake. For full braking effectiveness, riders should use both the front-brake lever and the rear-brake pedal simultaneously—three brakes are better than two, and two brakes are better than one.
Until next month, ride safe, and stop safe too.
Despite the front brake’s power, many riders attempt to stop using only the rear brake, either from habit, misinformation, or stress under panic conditions. Or they may use both brakes, but apply the front only timidly. Linking the front and

COOLING FAN ON A 1500 TRIKE _____________________________
Q:
I’ve been a faithful reader for years and always enjoy your advice. Now I need some. I ride a 1988 Gold Wing 1500 that’s been nothing but a pleasure since I bought it eight years ago with 18.2K miles on it. I had it triked with California Sidecar two years ago and currently the mileage is up to 57.4K miles. I am still breaking it in, but I have incurred a problem. The cooling fan runs constantly. It started a month ago and I haven’t ridden much since. There are no good shops nearby to go to. I’ve been on the Honda forum but haven’t found a direct answer. I ordered the switch they suggest could be par t of problem, but haven’t started work yet, mainly

because I’m not a good mechanic and have done little on the bike. Any suggestions? Mike Ward Keystone Heights, Florida
A:
Mike, this should be an easy fix. Remove the fairing front cover, and locate the fan motor switch on the bottom of the radiator. Remove the black wire from the switch, turn on the key switch, and the fan should now not run. If it doesn’t, but then begins running when you touch the wire to the switch terminal, then yes – the switch has packed it in. However, if the fan still runs continuously even with its wire removed, the wire is shorted to ground somewhere along its length, and you’d need to examine it for pinching or missing insulation and contact with a part of the chassis. Good hunting.

Q:
OK, I did the research, read the reviews, compared products, looked at the prices and I am still confused. I need the help of the master. What do you recommend for a plug-andplay Bluetooth system for my 2008 GL1800. I would like the system to connect rider and passenger and use all the features of my audio system to include the CB. And, I want one that has good sound. I don’t need to connect to a phone or any other devices. David D Staker Sandy, Utah

system. John Lazzeroni once advised that we first need to equip our audio systems with all equipment we want, then Bluetooth-enable the entire system. His products provide this ability, including the ability to get headset microphone output into the CB wirelessly. Though I’m admittedly not familiar with all products on the market, no other products I’m aware of can accomplish this. STIFF SUSPENSION ______________________________________________
Q:
I know I’ve seen questions about this in the past but cannot find the issue of Wing World where you answered it. I have a 2001 1800 with ABS. The suspension is very stiff. My dealer has gone through the bike and cannot get it fixed. He first thought it was a valve within the shock so he replaced it and put in new seals. That didn’t help. He called Honda and they said to check the springs. We put in new ones to no avail. He then went to the anti-dive valve, replaced it and still the bike rides rough. We took the top portion with the plunger off, made sure the valve was up, and took the bike for a ride. Still a rough ride. As I ride and look down through the faring and watch the shock, it isn’t “floating” like my 1500 did as I rode down the highway. My dealer has pretty much thrown his hands up. Can you please help with any advice as to what the cause may be? Thank you! Tim Thiel Lefor, North Dakota

The following is offered just to be certain that no aftermarket parts are causing your issue. If you have a fork brace installed, or if any other nonstandard items are installed on the fork legs or the axle, remove them, and have the front wheel correctly assembled to the forks, following exactly the sequence and torque figures in the service manual. Then hold the bike vertical without brakes applied while an assistant applies downward pressure on the handlebar, and the forks should compress and rebound around one inch using moderate force. If your forks behave as I described, the anti-dive valve is not stuck, and I doubt there’s anything wrong with your forks. Please – don’t attempt to watch the tubes and sliders as you ride. It’s unlikely you’d notice much from that angle, unless the wheel encountered a major road irregularity, and staring at that junction could prevent you from seeing some critical traffic development until it was too late to avoid an accident. So if the forks are okay, why is the ride rough? Though most folks seem to believe the forks are at fault, my hunch is that most complaints of rough ride are actually caused by inadequate spring preload at the rear shock absorber. Your bike being a 2001 model, I’d bet that your rear spring adjuster system failed long ago, causing your bike to ride like a hard-tail chopper. There’s an extremely easy test (with a long-ish explanation) for determining whether the adjustment numbers you see on your LCD actually represent the position of the rear spring adjuster. I developed this test back in 2001 and have featured it many, many times in “Workbench” and also in a full-blown article. The most

Thanks Stu. When I got back home from chemo treatment, I ran the tests and found the anti-dive valve is operating correctly. When I did the rear test as you described to Ed Jakobi, the sound of the motor changed at 10! I’ll be ordering the hose and taking the article to the master tech at the dealership. Thanks again.
______________________________ A LITTLE ABOUT ANTI-DIVE VALVES ______________________________
Q:
I own a 2012 Honda Gold Wing trike and have been reading various opinions concerning disabling the anti-dive valve to smooth out the ride and to help prevent blown fork seals, especially on the left side. No one has reported any adverse effects from this modification. This is my second Wing and I have yet to lose a fork seal (I hope that I didn’t just jinx myself.). The shim that they describe is thin and appears to be easy to install with no loss of fluid. I understand what the anti-dive valve is for, but I guess that I never gave much thought as to how it works. Does the thickness of the shim prevent the anti-dive valve from working? I would be interested to hear what you think about this modification and whether or not it is worth the modest price and time investment. Keep up the great work. “Workbench” is one of the first things that I read when I receive a new issue of Wing World. Thank you. Karl Hubler Midlothian, Texas

A:
Karl, I get a lot of mail from owners complaining of blown fork seals. The issue is usually on the left side, and often as not, the bike in question isn’t even a Gold Wing. Go figure. To provide a compliant ride, the GL1800 left fork has very little hydraulic damping unless the brakes are applied. During braking, the valve on the left fork slider is depressed, which restricts oil flow and slows the rate of front end dive. Extremely hard braking can cause quite a resistance to fork movement. If you disable a functional anti-dive valve, the ride will be no smoother when off the brakes than with the valve enabled. And during braking, especially with the added weight of a trike kit, the machine may exhibit excessive nose dive. Yes, the shim prevents the valve from being activated. The installation of an inexpensive hardware store item might be worth the time and effort, provided it actually fixed anything, which it doesn’t. It merely masks a defect. If your valve is still functional, rather than disabling it, consider taking action to prevent corrosion and eliminate contamination which could cause the sticking issue. Remove the top half of the valve, and without removing any internal parts, clean all visible inner surfaces of both halves with a mild solvent such as kerosene. Do not use brake cleaner, as that may swell the O rings in the valve and actually cause the sticking problem. Once both halves appear clean, smear all the surfaces with dielectric grease and reassemble.

have 12,000 miles on it for a fluid flush but the brake locked up before at around 10,000. Gold Wing riders should not think they are safe if the bike has less than 12,000 miles on it. Also, Honda and their dealers should be ashamed for continuing to sell a defective product that could cause serious injury. I have been riding Gold Wings since 1987 and would ride nothing else but let us call it like it is. Dennis Dunphy Massachusetts
A:
Who’s known what, and since when, is a question we’ll never know the answer to for sure. Is this issue really due to owner neglect, and for no other reason? I couldn’t say for sure. And frankly, I don’t believe American Honda can either. But one thing I can tell you is that owner neglect of maintenance items does indeed contribute to problems like these. Is the fluid replacement interval 12,000 miles? Yes, it is ... OR every 24 months, whichever comes first. This is stated clearly in your owners manual in the maintenance schedule.
_____________________________________________ BIKE MAINTENANCE MATTERS _____________________________________________
Q:
The “Fluid Flush “article by George Woodside was very informative although I do take issue with his comment: “It is worthwhile to note that the rear brake lockup issue this recall resolves isn’t actually a design issue with the bike. It’s poor maintenance by the owner.” I had a 2009 Gold Wing that I bought brand new from a dealership in Auburn, Massachusetts. The bike had only 10,000 miles on it when the back brake locked up while going down a welltraveled road in heavy traffic in Webster, Massachusetts. No injuries occurred but it was a close call. The dealer quickly replaced the secondary master cylinder at which time I quickly got rid of the bike and purchased a 2014 Gold Wing, which they assured me I would not have the same problem with the 2014 bike. One year later, I get a recall to replace the master cylinder in the 2014. So not only did Honda know about the problem in 2009 but they continued to sell the Gold Wing with the defect for several years. My 2009 did not WINGWORLDMAG.COM

You say that your bike had only 10,000 miles on it when the brakes first gave trouble. But you follow that by stating that the dealer quickly installed a new secondary master cylinder (SMC), at which time you quickly got rid of the bike and purchased a 2014 model. So if I’m reading you correctly, your bike was 5 years old at the time the brakes first gave trouble, and my hunch is the brake fluid had never been changed since new. Being hygroscopic, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the atmosphere ... the more humid the environment, the more quickly this happens and to a greater degree. Moisture in the brake fluid will cause oxidation of internal metal components, resulting in small orifices becoming clogged and caliper pistons failing to return after brake application due to corrosion at the piston seals. Was this the case with your 2009 model? Who knows, but replacement of the SMC on your 2014 was a preemptive strike against this ownerinduced problem, if it is indeed an owner-induced problem. Personally, I remain unconvinced.
Q:
Maybe you are right, but I find it hard to believe that Honda recalled all of the motorcycles for a problem caused by owner neglect and replaced the secondary master cylinder at no cost to the owner who was guilty of neglect. Not to mention, my 2014 was recalled only after three months of ownership. Yes, I did have the bike for five years but rode it very little because of various reasons. Maybe the inactivity caused the problem. To be honest, I never changed out the brake fluid in any of my cars or motorcycles since I started driving over 50 years ago. My 1986 Gold Wing had 76,000 miles on it when the stator quit working and I rode it for 10 years and never changed the brake fluid and never had a problem with the brakes. I am sure I am not alone. I change the motor oil every 3,000 miles and check the tires once a week but that is about it. Now I am thinking about the clutch fluid. I wonder if I fail to drain that out after 12,000 miles if the clutch will lock up. Thanks for the feedback. It is always appreciated.
A:
I also find that hard to believe. That’s why I said I remain unconvinced. If this were an isolated incident, warranty support might not be available. But with as many folks as there are suffering the issues, the cost of not addressing the problem could be quite a bit more costly to the importer than getting on top of it with a recall. Yes, I expect that you’ll have clutch issues if the fluid isn’t changed according to the maintenance schedule. Of course, you could always ignore it as with all of your previous cars and bikes, and hope for the best. Most car owners and a majority of bike owners neglect fluid changes as you do. I can understand it with car owners, as no owners manual I’ve seen addresses this, and most dealers don’t raise the issue. But with bikes, it’s a different story, because all brands specify a fluid replacement interval. The brake hoses on a car are all metal, except the short rubber lines between the calipers and the frame. Aside from the pedal system on a GL1800, the entire hose length on most bikes is normally rubber, and that’s why air/moisture is more likely to enter. Given your past maintenance habits, I’d say you were just lucky.

enough to open their facility on a Saturday. Not only did they give GCR members our own private tour, but over the course of two hours, they also demonstrated each of the rigorous tests a helmet has to pass before it receives a coveted Snell certification, and answered every question we could possibly ask. First, why wear a helmet? We learned from Snell Director of Education Hong Zhang, that “the primary purpose of a helmet is to manage energy so that if you have an accident all that energy is managed by the helmet and not your brain.” So how can you tell how well a helmet can manage energy? “Well unfortunately it isn’t easy,” shared Hong. “It’s not something as a consumer you can determine by looking at the thickness of the helmet, the weight, what it’s made of or even the price tag. The only way to tell is through extensive testing.” That’s where Snell comes in. The Snell Foundation prides itself on the fact that they don’t make helmets. They make helmets safer. They do this by developing rigorous testing standards and serving as an independent testing laboratory to ensure the manufacturers meet these stringent requirements. Through a series of high tech tests, each helmet that enters the Snell lab is put through its paces. To receive the much-sought-after Snell certification,
a helmet model in a specific size range must meet all the criteria in every single one of the following tests: impact protection, retention system, rotational stability, outer shell and face shield penetration and chin bar impact. My favorite test was the “buckshot test,” which is meant to simulate debris that is hurled at a rider’s visor. Because of their standards, according to Hong, “Snell certified helmets can manage energy between 40 percent to 110 percent better than a standard DOT approved helmet.” In fact, “The Snell standards are so high that many of the helmet models tested do not make the cut,” said Hong. “And those that do pass, continue to be tested on an ongoing basis for as long as the model is sold.” To ensure the integrity of retests, Snell procures helmets from online and local stores and not just from the helmet manufacturer directly. This guarantees Snell tests the same helmets you and I ultimately purchase and not just hand selected ones the manufacturer believes to be of the highest quality. According to Hong, “If at some point down the road a previously certified helmet fails the battery of tests, the model has to be recalled. If you’re interested in learning more about each of the demanding tests, please check out the Snell YouTube video, http:// youtu.be/DCyFJT74wQg. So what’s the difference between a DOT helmet and a Snell certified helmet? “DOT standards are maintained by the Department of Transportation, and are the minimum standards a helmet manufacturer must adhere to,” said Hong. “DOT certification is done on the honor system. The helmet’s manufacturer determines whether their helmets satisfy DOT and then claims the qualification for himself. There are no reporting requirements and the government provides very little spot checking that the standard is being adhered to.” The DOT standards are substantially more lenient than the Snell standards and therefore the protective qualities of a DOT helmet are not as strong. For more information on the differences check out http://www.smf.org/docs/articles/dot. The Snell tour was enlightening, educational and entertaining. After spending an afternoon with these knowledgeable helmet protection experts, it’s clear that the folks at Snell are extremely Kristen Johnson and Tammy Mathews toured the Snell Laboratory with their Chapter, the Gold Country Riders.

8 TIPS
T H RO T T L E + F R I C T ION ZON E
The tour was truly fascinating and there were so many tips shared and questions addressed during the two hours, it’s impossible to share them all, but here are the top eight.
1 Fit Fit is very important when it comes to your helmet. Hong shared that “Most riders wear a helmet that is too large. A helmet should fit snuggly.” For this reason, Snell encourages riders to wear the helmet in the store for at least three to five minutes to ensure the helmet is comfortable and does not have pressure points. Online helmet purchases should only be made after ensuring proper fit.
2
Care
Proper care will extend the life of a helmet. If you’re riding in the heat, be sure to let your helmet air out after the ride. When your liner needs to be cleaned, use a mild hand soap, hand wash the liner and air dry it. “It is important that you NEVER use a blow dryer or place the liner in the dryer. Extreme heat will damage the foam and cause it to break down,” said Hong. Hair products can also damage a liner. A thin helmet sock or Buff (www.buffusa.com) may help keep your liner clean longer and extend its use.
3
Stor age
When not in use, do not rest your helmet on your mirror, handlebars or other hard surfaces. Pressure on the inside the helmet will cause the liner and the foam shell to breakdown, creating a weak spot in the helmet and impacting its ability to fully protect you.
4 Damage If while wearing the helmet, the helmet comes into contact with a hard surface or you’ve been in an accident wearing the helmet, the helmet must be replaced immediately.
5
Myth Buster
Contrary to urban myth, dropping a helmet does not mean the helmet needs to be replaced. The damage to the helmet actually occurs if your head is in the helmet when it collides with a hard surface since the collision compresses the foam shell.
6 Replacement The helmet liner and foam shell break down over time impacting the helmet’s ability to manage energy properly and decreasing its protective qualities. When this happens, the helmet should be replaced. As a general rule a helmet should be replaced at least every five years.
7
What types of helmets are not certified?
While modular helmets pass the DOT standard, unfortunately they do not currently provide the impact protection required to be Snell certified. Additionally, the locking mechanisms don’t stay latched during the high impact Snell tests and this failure point could result in neck injuries during an accident. For those of us who prefer this style of helmet, it’s important that we put pressure on manufacturers to improve the helmet safety. Helmets with built-in flip down sun visors have not been submitted by manufacturers to be tested. Manufacturers are currently reducing the thickness of the foam in the brow area so that the visor fits in the helmet when the visor is in the retracted/stowed position. Unfortunately, this reduction compromises the ability for the helmet to manage energy and results in inferior protection for the rider. If you love the sun visor feature as much as I do, I encourage you to reach out to your favorite helmet manufacturer and request they improve protection these helmets offer.
Half helmets, AKA beanie helmets do not meet the Snell standard since they do not provide coverage for all the impact areas (back of the head) and offer inadequate protection.
8
So how can you tell if your helmet is Snell certified?
The Snell certification is often located under the helmet liner. You can also consult the certification list found on the Snell website at http://www.smf.org/cert. WINGWORLDMAG.COM

that if I could drive a stick shift and ride a bicycle, I could ride a motorcycle. They were right. There were a lot of similarities. They all hurt when collided with a stationary object! It just seemed like a “rite of passage,” so I stuck it out. I took a basic rider course to get my license. After taking the class and still making full bodily contact with the pavement every time I rode the machine, we bought a smaller bike for me. Remember that economy thing? Three years later in 2008, I partnered up with “Big Red,” my 2002 Illusion Red GL1800. From the first time we saw a drill team at our first Wing Ding in Billings, Montana, in 2007, Steve and I were totally amazed. So we attended a meeting about drill team formation. Arizona drill team members spoke of all the dedication and commitment involved – and the expense. We knew we couldn’t commit at that time. However, they mentioned something else that kept resurfacing in my mind. “A drill team is not comprised of the best riders, but of average riders who have been trained and disciplined to ride together safely as a team.”
I knew I was nothing more than average and I am trainable. Maybe I could do it! For the next six years, we followed the drill teams like a couple of groupies. Wing Ding 2013 was the turning point. I noticed on the schedule that there would be a formation riding team. Once Steve rode on this formation team, he was not just hooked, he was reeled in! He started forming a team before we ever left Greenville. After several practices, the Kansas Twisters made their debut performance at the Kansas District Rally in September that year. I don’t think any of my fellow teammates were surprised to see me join. Two of them had been my rider coaches in several Experienced Rider Courses (ERCs). Others have taken the ERC or road captain courses with me or ridden with me on my first ride in the mountains. All of them have eaten with me during Level 4 breakfasts. I had even earned my Master Tour Rider patch prior to the team’s formation. One team member even “competed” against Steve and me for title of District Couple of the Year in 2006. While neither of us received the honorable title that year, Steve and I did become
TIPS FOR WOMEN
CONSIDERING BECOMING
RIDERS
1
It has to be your decision: Don’t do it just because your husband, Chapter Members or other women pressure you. You will never become a successful rider if your heart and mind aren’t into it.
2
Take a Basic Riders Course: Take a course before you develop bad or unsafe habits. Dad always said, “A job worth doing is worth doing right.” Besides, you’ll save money on insurance.
3
Purchase a bike that fits you: Don’t just ride your husband’s hand-me-down. You should be able to put both feet flat on the ground while straddling the seat and reach the hand controls comfortably without leaning forward.
4 5
Wear all the gear all the time: I’m not the safety police here, but trust me on this one. You will make mistakes!
Don’t dwell on mistakes: Accept that they are going to happen and move on. In other words, “Put on your big girl panties and biker up!”

“Practice makes permanence – You are what you practice”: I borrowed this one from our Kansas District Educator. In other words, practice good habits and take frequent riding courses.

District Couple of the Year in 2014. My biggest personal accomplishment though, to me, is the publication of my first book, It’s All About the Journey. I assembled memories of my journey with GWRRA into the book. It is not merely a journal or map of the places we’ve been, but of the adventures and people along the way. Some folks have even bought my book just to see what I’ve written about them. I use humor and my ability to laugh at myself to break through the stigma some people have of bikers and to promote safety and a positive image of motorcycling. Having a book published is something I have dreamed about since learning to read. It used to bring a smile to my face when GWRRA Members told me how much they enjoyed reading the Chapter Newsletters I had written during the six years we served as Chapter A Directors. You can get your personal, autographed book by contacting me at tmbockhaus@cox.net.

It’s All About the Journey is a collection of humorous short stories detailing Terri Bockhaus’ journey from riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle to being one of a handful of female riders nationwide to perform on a motorcycle drill team. Terri and her husband, Steve, were involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 2004. During their recovery, they were introduced to Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Bockhaus’ book chronicles her mishaps as she learns to ride her own motorcycle and the funny, and sometimes scary, happenings on some of their trips. You don’t have to be a biker to enjoy this book. Email tmbockhaus@cox.net to purchase a copy.

RENTING A WING TO REVISIT HOME IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER BY CARMELA PARKER
I
’m a New Jersey granny who was born in Sydney, Australia, to an Aussie gal and American soldier. I grew up in Brisbane and moved to the USA when I was 11 years old. In 2013, my mum passed away at age 94 and I planned a trip home to visit my Australian family in Jan. 2014. I have been riding for 44 years. My current ride is a classic 1987 GL1200 Gold Wing, the fourth one of the same model over the last 25 years. This would probably be my last visit home, and I wanted to ride while there. However, renting a bike I wasn’t familiar with, going on a prepackaged tour, or planning my own ride and going it alone didn’t appeal to me. I found Chapel Australian Bike Tours – a touring company that had in their stable a couple of the exact same GL1200s such as I’ve been riding since the ’80s. Riding “my” bike in “my” country ... perfection! Tour owners Mick and Marg McHenry tailored a 12day ride for me through New South Wales and Victoria. These folks made me feel like family and took care of everything on the trip. I chose to do some camping ... but I never had to pitch a tent or do anything but relax. They took all the worry and work out of it and all I had to do was ride and have a couple of beers or glasses of wine at the end of the day. I asked to skip the cities

and tourist scene; I could do that before and after the ride. I asked for more riding than sightseeing on foot, and to ride to places reminiscent of the Australia of my childhood in the 1940s and ’50s, which today means country or outback towns. After a visit with family in Brisbane, I flew to Sydney. Mick met me at the airport and my first night was spent at the McHenry’s lovely home in Jervis Bay. They live adjacent to a golf course where the golfers play around mobs of kangaroos resting under trees. We packed the bikes that night and headed out early. Marg was Mick’s co-rider and she photographed the entire trip.

A surprise stop at a small country airport in Tumut, where I was dared to fly in a microlight aircraft, basically a big kite with a propeller in back. I sat behind the handsome pilot, Peter Wilson, who took us up 5,000 feet. Riding on through small towns of Batlow, Tumbarumba and down into the valley across the Murray River that separates New South Wales and Victoria. Stayed at Walwa Pub that night, a cool haven.
DAY 1
Rode down the coast of New South Wales through Milton Village, Ulladulla, Batemans Bay, then inland up Clyde Mountain to Nelligen, and on to Braidwood. Lunch was at the Pie Shop in Bungendore, then we stopped on Mt. Ainslie to overlook Canberra, capital city of Australia. The town of Cooma had tall poplar trees along the roads. Arrived at the campground in Dalgety where Mick set up the tents. We wet our feet in the Snowy River, saw a wombat and had dinner at Buckleys Crossing Hotel, where I enjoyed a Tooheys beer and telling the locals I was in fact an Aussie.
DAY 3
DAY 2
Crossed the Snowy River Bridge, carefully riding through a mob of sheep. On through towns at the foot of the Snowy Mountains – Jindabyne, a winter ski resort town, Berridale, and Adaminaby, which hosts skiers in winter and trout fishing in summer. In 1958, the entire town of Jindabyne was moved, buildings on the back of trucks, to a new town site to make way for a dam being built on the Snowy River. On through Kosciuzko National Park, where the lines on road turned from white to yellow to indicate we
Brekky (breakfast) at the pub, then followed the Murray River west, turned south toward the Victorian Snowy Alps thru Tallangatta, yet another town that was moved in 1956 to make way for a dam. Rode up Mt. Beauty and on to Bright. Arrived at the gold mining town of Beechworth, where we were supposed to camp but it was so hot, Mick arranged for a cabin with air conditioning. Dinner was at a local pub, then we took a taxi to Mayday Hills Asylum for a ghost tour.
DAY 4
Left Beechworth at 7:15 a.m. heading to the western plains of Victoria. On to Rutherglen, Yarrawonga, following the Murray River to Echuca, Cohuna and Kerang. In Kerang, it was so hot that Marg and I ran thru sprinklers in a park. We hit Swan Hill at 3:30 p.m., short of our destination in Ouyen. Mick booked us into the Caravan Park where there was a pool and air conditioning. Marg and I fell into the pool. Walked thru Riverside Park and into New South Wales for dinner. WINGWORLDMAG.COM

Temperatures were supposed to reach 44 C (111 F) the next day, road signs everywhere read, “Stop, Revive, Survive” – good advice. Next day, we traveled 500K (310 miles) to Broken Hill.
DAY 5
Early start. 250K thru Mildura, the central town of the region on the Murray River, passing miles of vineyards, orchards, grain farms and olive groves. On to Wentworth – the start of the outback, heading due north to spend two days in the historic town of Broken Hill on the far western border of New South Wales. Locals assured us the temp had “come down” to 47 C (116 F). Luckily it was a dry heat, no moisture in this air. At Broken Hill, we checked into the Palace Hotel (made famous in that campy old movie “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”). Dinner at Broken Hill Musicians Club.
DAY 6
Toured the Flying Doctors Airbase, which provides

medical care over a land mass of 247,105 square miles. Visited the studio of Pro Hart, a former miner who became one of the outback Australia’s premier painters. Dinner was at the Palace Hotel. Then we drove to the Living Desert and Sculptures, 12 sandstone artworks completed in 1993 by artists from around the world. Beautiful sunset with full moon and champagne!
DAY 7
We rode east 285 miles thru Wilcannia to Emmdale Roadhouse for lunch, and stopped for the night in a cool cabin in the mining town of Cobar.
DAY 8
Lunch in Nyngan and an ice cream break in the town of Nevertire. Passing fields of grain and farm machinery, getting back to civilization. Arrived in Dubbo at 4 p.m. Camping tonight, so Marg and I sat in the swimming pool while Mick set up the tents. Bless him! Taxi into town for dinner at Returned and Services League. Every night at 6 p.m., all patrons stand and have a minute of silence in memory of fallen soldiers. “Lest we forget.”

Stops at Molong, Orange and Bathurst – watched some of a schoolboy cricket match. On to Lithgow and up into the Blue Mountains from Victoria Pass to Blackheath, Katoomba, Medlow Bath and Springwood, where we stayed at Marc and Mandy’s Bed-and-Breakfast, friends of the McHenrys.
DAY 10
A day riding the Blue Mountains. Marc offered me a seat on back of his GL1800, “Babe,” so I could be a tourist for a day and take pics along the way. Ridding to Richmond through areas that were recently devastated by bushfires, you see how quickly the bush regenerateds. Rode the Bell Line of Road to Bilpin, with great views toward the coast and across the bushland. Had lunch at the beautiful old Imperial Hotel in Mt. Victoria. On to Katoomba where my Mum and Dad went on their honeymoon in 1944, and on to Echo Point, Three Sisters, Scenic World, then back to Springwood. Dinner at local pub with McHenry’s friends, fellow Wing riders Tim and Nicky. Delightful evening. Back to the Bed-and-Breakfast for coffee and more talk about ... what else, bike trips.
DAY 11
Rain gear on as we head down the Blue Mountains to Penrith, and east to Campbelltown, then south onto the Hume Highway. Down Princes Highway, traveling down Mt. Ousley to Wollongong, passing Shellharbour, Kiama, Gerringong, Foxground, Berry
and Nowra. Another hour and we’re back to home base. That night, neighbors Ken and Cheryl hosted a barbecue for me with about 14 other neighbors and friends. Kangaroos in the yard as we ate! Great people, good conversation. The ride is over but not the vacation!
DAY 12+
Before flying back to the U.S., I wanted to spend a few days in Sydney visiting another cousin. Marg drove me on the three-hour trip, stopping at many places I wanted to see, such as Bondi Beach, my mum’s favorite. Marg arranged for a hotel room, planned more sightseeing and kept me company for two days before my cousin could meet up with me. We did the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, toured the Opera House, ferried across the harbour, and visited many places of interest in that wonderful city of my birth. Our last day, she arranged a lovely goodbye dinner with four friends. Marg documented the whole bike trip, and she and Mick made a DVD from the photos and video clips. My seven grandchildren really enjoy watching it, too ... kangaroos, koalas, emus and motorcycles. They tell me I’m officially a “cool moto-granny”! You might remember reading a little about Parker, GWRRA #68647-01, in our “International” issue from Nov. 2015. We are happy to provide her full story here and more photos from her trip. BY MELANIE GEGGIE
our score and seven years ago … or so it seems, I took my first motorcycle ride (as a passenger). It was the late 1960s. The bike was a rigid frame Harley-Davidson. The destination was “all the way” from Cincinnati to Indianapolis! As best as I can recall, the rear seat (using the term very loosely) was nothing more than a 5-inch by 8-inch leather pad somehow attached to the rear fender. I remember nothing about my driver – but I do remember that the ride took my breath away. I was hooked. I also knew that any further journeys on a motorcycle would have an enhanced rear

seat of some fashion! Then I got to thinking … how could I own one? I wanted to be in charge of the journey. Yep, I wanted to steer! I had been dreaming of owning a motorcycle since my “fully loaded” Schwinn bicycle days! Luck and fate put me in the driver seat of an early Honda. She was not much more than a scooter. But, she got me where I was going for a short while. And as an added bonus, I no longer had to wait for a “date” to ask me out for a motorcycle ride. That was a novel concept for a female back in the day! It wasn’t always easy for us aspiring lady riders in the early years! Moving through the ’60s and ’70s, I owned/co-owned several cruiser type “city” bikes including two Triumphs and a Suzuki. Then in the late ’80s, I purchased a 920 NOVEMBER 2016

cc Yamaha Virago. Remember the grinding noise as they started? This bike let me “keep up” with my friends who owned comfortable touring bikes. Still, I had no road pegs, windshield or large fuel reserve like my friends. Longer trips were a challenge, but I was younger and in love with the wind in my face. I had long ago stopped asking gentleman friends “if” they had a motorcycle – but started asking them “what color” is your motorcycle? Their next expression answered all my future questions and weeded out the undesirable nonbiker types! I always found time for motorcycling throughout the active parenting years and daily constraints of my career as a Radiation Therapist. In 1994, I bought my first Gold Wing. It was a Black ’81 Interstate 1100 cc that was the answer to all my forever dreams with its windshield, saddle/trunk bags, radio, and road pegs – or so I thought. Then came my ’84 Grey 1200 cc in 1998. The front end seemed lighter and she had overdrive! It was the answer to my dreams – or so I thought. Later, while on a camping trip with this bike in 2001, I met a man to whom I didn’t have to ask what color his bike was. I
saw it was yellow! This guy (his name was Chuck) ultimately became my husband. Soon he began to work on the ole Grey 1200, but he couldn’t make the brakes any better than what they were already – which was 1984 technology! In early 2002, along came the Red 1992 Aspencade 1500 cc. She was already blessed with yellow roses painted on her fenders and saddlebags! On a wet, cold winter day, I rode her home to Cincinnati from Michigan. I didn’t much notice the ghastly weather since I was on a bike that had reverse, a CB and yellow roses on her velour seat covers! Having two antennas was a new status symbol for me. Surely this 6 cylinder lady was the answer to every motorcycle fantasy I had ever conjured – or so I thought! How could it get any better? Well, that answer came in 2007 when a beautiful ’02 Pearl Orange 1800 passed into my hands. After working with her for many months to scrape off five years of “testosterone cooties” left by prior owners, I was able to adorn “Rose” with yellow roses, also. She and I have been quite the team for many years. Together we have both aged and added another 125,000 miles of lady riding enjoyment! I don’t think motorcycling will ever get any better than with my “Rose” – or so I thought. WINGWORLDMAG.COM

them Gold Wings) and journeys have served to make up my personal motorcycle history. I would not trade a single mile of my journey in order to avoid helmet hair! The look seems to fit me just fine!
She has asked not to be triked – to be left as a twowheeler. I have honored her request. In Oct. 2015, I developed a new lady rider team – me and a ’08 Pearl Melanie Geggie, GWRRA #148547, is Grand Master White 1800 who I am calling “Snowy Rose.” I believe #4453, and belongs to Chapter OH-E2 a bike and the rider (and co-rider) form a team or unit – working together and taking care of each other out there on the road. “Snowy Rose” had less than 1,300 miles on her and is happy with the prospect of someday becoming a trike when I feel the time is right for us. My journey as a lady rider began in the ’60s partly out of necessity for transportation, but mostly because it fed my wanderlust! I am blessed to still be able to enjoy the sport of my choosing from so very long ago. Maps have taken me on many miles (collectively over 250,000 at last estimate) of twisty curves atop many different motorcycles. Sometimes it wasn’t a map dictating my journey. Sometimes I just turned right out of the driveway! All of the machines (five of In 2007, Melanie purchased a used 2002 Pearl Orange GL1800 named Rose.

y husband, Buddy, and I met at work 19 years ago, began dating a year later and married on Aug. 26, 2000. While we were dating, we purchased a secondhand full-dress Kawasaki motorcycle. We kept it for about two years, and then sold it so we could buy a boat. Having the boat meant we could take the grandchildren out on the lake where we taught them to swim, snorkel, fish for crappie and bass and even taught them to drive the boat. Finally in the fall of 2006, we

found a mint condition 1986 Gold Wing Aspencade SEI at Bob Logue Motorsports in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Cold weather came early that year, so we didn’t really get to ride it much. When spring came, we could hardly wait to get out on the bike. We only got to spend the early part of the summer riding locally and even made a trip to Gettysburg where we rode the bike along the battlefield tour. My husband had herniated a disc in his back and had to have surgery. Everything

The first day out was cool but gorgeous, and we headed north to the Fall Festival near Forksville Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. After spending time there, we headed over the mountain to Eagles Mere for their festival. Unfortunately, we never made it. As we were riding into town, a man and his wife who were visiting from out of the area, ran the stop sign just as we reached the intersection. My husband was able to get us slowed from 30 mph to 10 mph just as we made impact into the passenger’s side of the car. Because the car was still moving forward when we hit, the motorcycle was spun to the right for a second impact. I was thrown over my husband and the car and landed on my right shoulder blade 20 feet across the intersection. My husband was thrown onto the hood of the car, and then slid onto the road surface. The man driving the car said he never saw “any motorcycles” until just before we made impact. We were the lead motorcycle, our friends were right behind us on their full dresser and there were two other motorcycles behind them coming into town. Neither of us suffered any broken bones, but my right leg had been
pinned between the Gold Wing and wheel well of the car. As I was thrown from the Gold Wing, my leg was scraped from hip to toes along the rim of the wheel well. Our friends assumed that this would be the end of our motorcycling days, but they were wrong. Within three weeks, we

had found a 1993 Gold Wing 1500 in perfect condition, bought it and brought it home. Unfortunately, my husband’s back began to bother him about a month or so after the accident. His surgeon checked him over, but found no overt injuries and encouraged him to keep working and moving. The pain continued to increase in severity and frequency until it was constant, so his surgeon performed an exploratory procedure. He found that my husband’s spinal canal was full of stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), causing the nerves to be pinched. About seven to eight months after a second surgery, we knew that the 1993 Gold Wing was too heavy and getting harder to ride. I thought that this would be the end of our riding when a friend with a 2008 Gold Wing traded motorcycles with Buddy for the day. Buddy really enjoyed riding his friend’s motorcycle, so I started looking for one. Later that same day, I found a 2008 Gold Wing GL1800 sitting in the showroom of Bob Logue Motorsports. Within 24 hours the new motorcycle was sitting in our garage.
In early 2010, I finally made up my mind that I wanted to get my motorcycle license and ride my own motorcycle. I took the test for my permit and we bought a used Honda Rebel for me to learn. My husband has ridden for most of his life and told me that, “Anyone can ride a motorcycle fast.” So instead of just putting me on the road to learn, he took me to one of our local schools so that I could practice riding slow, shifting gears, riding in circles, stopping, starting, and more. After about a month of that kind of practice, I started riding on the road where we live. It was scary at first, but I soon conquered the fear by having a healthy respect for the motorcycle and the knowledge that nearly everyone else out there on four or more wheels would most likely not see me coming. I still ride with that thought first and foremost in my mind. We also belong to a local group called the Billtown Bikers from Williamsport. They also taught me a lot and completely encouraged me along the way – my thanks to them, too. Later in June 2010, we rode the Gold Wing to Custer, South Dakota,
and back. It was a great trip and we both learned a lot. Before that trip, Buddy couldn’t do a figure 8 in our driveway. But after touring through Custer State Park on the Iron Mountain Ride, he has no trouble doing that Figure 8 in our driveway. I also learned what it’s like to spend two days riding on a motorcycle in pouring rain. I signed up for the Motorcycle Safety Course for the last weekend in July 2010 – which turned out to be the hottest and most humid weekend of the summer. I scored 100 percent on the written test, then spent the next two days (five hours each day), riding around the safety training course wearing jeans, boots, long sleeved shirt, gloves and modular helmet. Fortunately, our instructors were equally uncomfortable, so they gave us 10-minute water breaks every hour. But it was all worth it when I passed the riding test and they stamped my permit! By late 2010, Buddy’s pain continued to increase, so we turned to the Interventional Pain Therapy team at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. The injections worked for a while, but began to be needed WINGWORLDMAG.COM

rode our motorcycles to Niagara Falls, New York and Canada. We got our passports stamped for the trip into Canada and had a great time seeing the Falls and riding along the Niagara River in Canada. On the ride home, we took a different route so that we could see the Erie Canal. Over the last couple of years, Buddy’s had more issues with his spine and had to have another surgery. This one was to remove a bone spur that was on the inside of the Kathy preparing for her first group ride on her own motorcycle front of his spinal column. In order to get in 2010 at the Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York. to it, the surgeon had to go in on his right Group of parked bikes before a group ride. side and work his way to the spine. In order to do this, they had to remove part of one rib, deflate his lung and remove one of the discs. Once the bone spur was removed, they put in a piece of material to replace the disc and shored up his spine with rods and screws. Buddy still rides, but not as often or as far as before. I’ve also had four surgeries on my spine, and am also still able to ride. I thoroughly enjoy riding and want to do it for as long as possible. It’s something we both love to do, especially together. We’ve talked about the possibility of triking the Gold Wing, but with both of us retired and living on a very fixed income, I don’t know more often. My husband was soon operated on again so how we can afford it. I’ll continue to pray over it because that a neural stimulator could be implanted into his spine I know that God will show us the way. I have one last note for the ladies: As nice as it is next to the spinal cord. It has been a great help. He can’t have it turned on when he’s riding, but when we reach to sit behind your spouse or significant other on that motorcycle, it’s even more fun to ride a motorcycle of our destination, he can turn it on again. In 2011, we made a trip to the Wing Ding 33 in Knoxville, your own. I was 53 years old when I got my permit, Tennessee. The weather was hot and humid, but we learned to ride and passed the tests for my license. Only had a great time. We had lizard lights added to the Gold one person said, “Aren’t you a little old to be doing that?” Wing and rode in the Light Parade that same night. … and the comment came from another woman. My We even rode the Cherahola Skyway and Tail of the opinion is that you’re never too old to do anything you Dragon. It’s a nice two-land road with Kathy and Buddy Edinger, GWRRA #318483, live in New lots of great scenery along the way. Columbia, Pennsylvania. This article came about after We’ve continued to ride locally and even did some Edinger entered a photo in our cover contest and stated, longer rides with the Billtown Bikers. THROTTLE + ROA D TRIPS
NEVER FORGOTTEN Honoring U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Mathijssen PHOTOS AND TEXT BY PAUL AND SHEILA ROBINO
O
n the second day of a 16-day road trip, we were given a prayer card for a fallen vet. U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Mathijssen had served multiple combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he passed stateside July 7, 2015 in Nevada, just a day shy of his 42nd birthday, after a car turned left in front of the motorcycle he was riding.
Maybe it was because he was exmilitary and a motorcycle rider that my wife and I felt a deep connection to this man whom we had never met. So we took Erik with us for the rest of our 5,825-mile trip by clipping his prayer card to the side of the windshield. We told our story about Erik through New Mexico, South Dakota, Montana and Washington and asked a number of people if they would pose for a picture. It seemed like someone upstairs had given us this task to complete. I must have looked at Erik’s prayer card a hundred times and read the words, “I’m Free.” My wife and I both felt that way – no time schedule, no appointments, no meetings, just being one with nature and the calling of the road. We arrived home to California, Aug. 16, 41 days after Erik started his last ride. This trip was for him. The Robinos, GWRRA #306424, live in Oxnard, California, and ride a 2008 Black Wing with 62K miles on it. Read more about the Robinos ride at http://ridermagazine. com/2015/08/31/blogeriks-last-ride.

BEACHES
U.S. News & World Report named Sanibel Island among the top 10 family beaches in the U.S. The article says the island “is popular with families because its beaches have plenty of beautiful – sometimes unusual – seashells, which little ones love to collect.” Sanibel Island was ranked among the top 10 dog-friendly vacations in the U.S. by bringfido.com. The island offers pet friendly hotels, events, restaurants and parks and beaches for dogs to enjoy. www.bringfido. com/destination. Family Vacation Critic named Captiva Island one of the 10 Best Beaches for Families in 2016, saying,
Bonita Beach
“Captiva Beach isn’t for those seeking a go-go-go vacation – it’s for families who truly want to disconnect and unwind at the beach. In fact, the most popular thing to do is walk the beach and collect shells, including conch and sand dollars. The island offers shelling tours, with one hotel (South Seas Island Resort) even featuring a designated shelling concierge!” Lovers Key State Park was named one of 10 Florida “best beaches” by readers of USA Today and 10 Best.

ATTRACTIONS AND RECREATION
Pinewood Trails Park, near the center of Pine Island, is Lee County Parks and Recreation’s newest site. The 30-acre park includes acres of pine flatwoods, gopher tortoises, eagles, red-shouldered hawks and redbellied woodpeckers. The park features walking and hiking trails, shade structures and free onsite parking. Pine Loop Trail is paved and ADA-accessible. Leashed dog walking is permitted. For information visit leeparks.org. Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center has opened in Bonita Springs with a culinary test kitchen and an Italian-themed celebrity chef restaurant. The venue will offer diversified cultural programming featuring local and national artists. For schedule and details, visit www.swflpac.com. The Mound House on Fort Myers Beach has unveiled $2 million in renovations. The 1921 period renovations to the island’s oldest standing structure atop an ancient Calusa Indian shell mound serve as a backdrop for stories spanning some 2,000 years. Inside the restored two-story home, three new galleries have been added: Ancient People Gallery, Settlers on the Shells Gallery and Digging Deeper Exploratory Gallery. The grounds have been landscaped with three gardens and guided kayak tours are available. Details: www.moundhouse. org. Koreshan State Historic Site has completed a cottage rehab where one of the “Final Four” Koreshans lived. Home of German-born Conrad Schlender, the tiny wood-frame building was likely built around 1900, then moved to the Utopian communal settlement in the ’30s. A clattering stand of giant bamboo shades the little building on the grounds, which offers visitors a glimpse of the lives the idealistic pioneers carved out of the subtropical scrub around the turn of the 20th century. Led by the charismatic Cyrus Teed, who renamed himself Cyrus (Hebrew for shepherd), the group planned to create New Jerusalem. The site is located at Corkscrew Road and U.S. 41 in Estero. For details call 239-992-0311 or visit floridastateparks.org/ koreshan. The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum on Sanibel Island hosts a weekly beach walk with a marine naturalist beginning at the Island Inn each Tuesday at 10 a.m. Cost is $10 per person and includes half-price admission to the museum. Reservations are required. www.shellmuseum.org. Sundial Beach Resort on Sanibel Island completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that includes a new WINGWORLDMAG.COM

Beneath the tower, a 575-foot-long meandering lazy river pool with water hazards will drench guests along the way. Additional pool coves, accommodating nearly 300 swimmers, will complete the more than 249,000-gallon waterscape. Surrounding the tower and lazy river, a forest of Southwest Florida native plants will include live oak, Sabal palm and Saw palmetto. A lushly landscaped pool deck will accommodate a large number of guests, event space and two food trucks to serve a changing selection of local cuisine. The one-acre expansion to Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort’s pool amenity will increase the total pool area to three acres in size. www. coconutpoint.hyatt.com.
TURTLE TIME Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina on Fort Myers Beach has employed naturalist Vince McGrath to offer resort guests morning wildlife walking and kayaking expeditions to explore the eco-zones of the local marine environment. Turtle nesting season runs May 1 through Oct. 31. There is a strong push to help sea turtles with public awareness programs that let visitors know about Loggerheads, the most common sea turtles in Florida. Growing to more than three feet long and weighing 200-350 pounds, they may travel thousands of miles from feeding grounds to the same nesting beaches where they were born. Hatchlings are about two inches long, emerge at night and are guided by the Gulf horizon to the water. For more information, visit www.turtletime.org.

Important booking information:
Why Staying in the Room Block is Important
Besides the great rate, benefits include: •Better networking opportunities when you stay at the contracted hotel with other attendees •Reservations within the block are better-proteted from relocation •Block rooms help support the conference. Meeting space rental and future room rates are based on in-the-block bookings, helping to keep the overall cost of your registration lower. Future cost savings for all depends on strong in-the-block bookings.
Important Information about organizations that are not authorized to handle Wing Ding 39 reservations. Housing pirates are unauthorized, unaffiliated housing providers that offer rooms at reduced rates under the guise of an affiliation with Gold Wing Road Riders Association and Wing Ding 39. These are often not legitimate companies with actual room blocks. Gold Wing Road Riders Association cautions attendees and exhibitor to only use the methods outlined above to book your Wing Ding 39 hotel reservations. If you are unsure that a solicitation is legitimate, please contact the contracted hotels directly. Only the contracted Wing Ding 39 hotel where you are holding a reservation is authorized to charge a deposit to your credit card on June 30, 2017. Any vendor asking you to pre-pay in full is a scam. No organization is authorized to solicit or initiate a call to Gold Wing Road Riders Association members or exhibitors for the purpose of booking hotel rooms for Wing Ding 39.

BENEFITS
THE BENEFITS OF WING
WORLD MAGAZINE
BY MELISSA EASON
W
ing World magazine is a benefit that comes with any GWRRA membership. There are two ways to get the magazine – in the mail or online. How many of you knew we have a digital edition of Wing World magazine? It’s available on Kindle, Apple and Amazon applications. You can read Wing World anywhere you take your smartphone or tablet. The digital edition also has extra content we couldn’t fit into the print version that month. So take a peek and see what fun stuff you might be missing. Many of our advertisers have links that if you click on their ad, it will take you to to their website. This makes it easier to research products you are interested in. In some editions, there are also videos embedded either in ads or stories. Each issue of Wing World magazine has specific sections to help put information at your fingertips: • Event and association information • Membership application so you can share the GWRRA
experience with fellow riders
• Hall of Fame to thank those who work hard to help our family grow
• In Memoriam to pay tribute to those we have lost • Calendar of events so you can find things to do all over the country and to plan your vacations
• Classifieds for additional shopping fun • Officer Listing to be able to reach your local Chapter
Director or a Director in an area in which you’re traveling. This is a great section to use when traveling because dinner with friends is just a phone call away. We are always looking for great photos to feature and stories about your adventures to include in Wing World. Please let us know if you have something to share or something you would like to see by emailing editor@ gwrra.org. You can also submit photos and stories online at www.wingworldmag.org. See the bottom toolbar for the link.

Our Chapter now has 10 newly certified trike riders
On a rather hot Oct. 3, 2015, we held our Ladies Only TRC class. We met early Saturday morning and completed the classroom portion. We all made it that far and intact. The range came next with the heat and wind. Who knew that October would bring mid-80 degree temperatures? We had many different riding skill levels, but Jack and I did a good job of coaching and explaining each exercise. Chapter Member Randy Bolsinger, who is an Advanced Rider WINGWORLDMAG.COM

Autumn Lasts Forever By Asa Rouse
Asa Rouse, GWRRA #83836, and his wife, Elizabeth (Libby) Rouse have been married 63 years and live in Walton, Kentucky. They have been members of Chapter G of Florence, Kentucky, since September of 1992, where they’ve held all chapter coordinator positions except Assistant Chapter Director and Chapter Director. They have ridden various Gold Wings in all 50 states and in eight of the 10 Canadian provinces, tent camping in most. The couple had their 2006 Gold Wing triked about five years ago. Rouse was “moved to compose this essay” after “one particularly exhilarating autumn ride.”

Summer lasts forever. I know that to be a fact because, well, I just know it. You don’t live as long as I have without learning a few things and one of the things I learned as a kid is that summer lasts forever. But something’s been goin’ on in the last few years. I can’t tell exactly when it started, but somebody’s been foolin’ around with summer. It’s become like delicious ice cream that melts before you hardly get a taste. You know exactly what I mean, whether you’re a young or not so young member of GWRRA. You remember how it was. Sure you do. School let out in May and an endless time stretched out in front of you ... a time called summer vacation. You had a hundred things you wanted to do and you had time to do them all and had time to spare. So, like I say, it’s obvious that somebody’s been foolin’ around with summer. There were a hundred things you wanted to do since spring arrived and only a fraction of them got done. This summer spare time was rarer than a nickel Pepsi. Tobacco just got set. How did it get so big so fast and almost all of it already hangin’ in the barn? Corn just now got recognizable in the field for the crop it is ... just tall enough at 12- to 14-inches to “hide a jug” as my old friend, Ed Turner, used to say. What on earth is it doin’ with tassels, tall and turnin’ that autumnal golden color? Ironweed, the most beautiful of fall’s wildflowers, is weeks early this year. Well, isn’t it? Please tell me it is! But thank heavens for autumn! As far as I can tell, nobody’s been messin’ around with autumn. You remember. Sure you do. Labor Day arrives and an endless time stretches out in front of you ... time which includes crisp, gorgeous mornings, Indian Summer days, roadside weeds turning brown and trees turning into something so beautiful they can’t even be described with words. Autumn! The skies seem bluer, the clouds whiter and the streams clearer than you’ve ever seen them before. It’s a different and wonderful kind of wind that caresses your face as you and your beloved co-rider cruise along a favorite back country road. Autumn lasts forever. I know that to be a fact because, well, I just know it. You don’t live as long as I have without learnin’ a few things and one of the things I learned as a kid is that autumn lasts forever. It does, doesn’t it? Please tell me it does.

THREE ACTS OF KINDNESS Below are three submissions received in 2013 that we wanted to share with everyone. Better late than never, we thank all these wonderful folks for their kindness – each member who sent us their story and each person who helped a GWRRA member in need.
ACT ONE
O
n Mon., June 24, 2013, my wife Eileen and I had planned a trip and vacation from Ozark, Alabama, to Linden, Flemington, and Altoona, Pennsylvania, to attend several events. Eileens’ 60th high school class reunion, her Flemington school reunion, her Elementary Flemington School reunion, her Flemington High School students supper plus my 64th high school students supper and a big plus of Chapter gatherings on Sat., July 6 at Kings in Altoona. When we started out on Monday morning, I noticed a drop of oil on the garage floor under the bike. I thought it was from the recent oil change for our trip and wasn’t concerned. But by the time we got to our first gas stop in Opelika, Alabama, our oil was low. I checked the plug and filter and all seemed OK. We filled the oil to the proper level and started off again. Our next gas fill up was on the North side of Atlanta, Georgia, and we started smelling oil. I looked and discovered oil was leaking around the shifter lever. We discussed the situation – “Do we go on and keep filling the oil and gas or turn back.” We decided to keep going. When we stopped to fill up in Charlotte, North Carolina, my boot and trouser leg were soaked in oil, plus the shifter lever, footrest, and my wife’s foot and trouser leg were covered with oil, as was the trailer. What a mess. When we decided to bunk up for the night, at about 6 p.m., I called my friends in Julian, Pennsylvania, George and Janice Snowberger, Members of Chapter “PA-S” in Altoona. He advised me to keep checking the oil level and bring it up. He had an extra grommet to fit it. We didn’t change trousers the next morning and arrived in Pennsylvania. While George worked on the bike, Janice made sauerkraut and pork for supper. George cleaned all the oil off the bike. A couple of days before we left, George also found the reasons for a second leak – an alternator we replaced before we left on the trip had messed up the O-ring. George had

one of those also and did the repair work. He wouldn’t take any money, but I’ll tell you what, if I win the lottery, George and Janet will both get a new Gold Wing trike. By Bruce and Eileen Williamson, GWRRA #133029, of Ozark, Alabama.
ACT TWO
M
emorial Day weekend 2013, Ron and I, Kenny and Carol Smart, and Bob and Vicky Depew decided to go for a peaceful, scenic ride in Wisconsin. Day One – Kenny had a flat tire. No problem! We were prepared for just about anything because we were all pulling trailers. So we pulled off the highway, found the slit and plugged it! We aired the tire and were back on the road. Day Two – Not so prepared! A spring broke on our homemade “refrigerator” trailer that has traveled with us over 100,000 miles. We called everywhere and could not find the spring that we needed. We got out the trusty Gold Book. Most people were away from home, but we finally located a man named Wayne Baetsen of Cross Plains, Wisconsin. “What can I do for you ... what do you need?” He insisted on helping us, but he didn’t have the spring. However, Ron and the guys figured out a way for us to get back on the road with Wayne’s other supplies. So using cable wire, a board, and a lot of ingenuity, they rigged the trailer so we could get home. Leaving the trailer at Wayne’s, we toured for one more day and traveled our way back through the country to get it the next day. We made it home OK after over 300 miles. What wonderful people Wayne and his wife are! After 30 years on the Milwaukee Police Department, he retired and moved to the country. What a neat place! Wayne not only traveled 30 miles to pick up the trailer, he also supplied what we needed for repairs, opened his home for us, and stored the trailer overnight. We asked how we could ever repay them, and their

y wife and I rode to Pennsylvania in May 2013, on our 2010 Gold Wing pulling our Escapade trailer. We were scheduled to ride with another couple, but he had an emergency meeting he had to take so we started by ourselves. About 2 p.m. while moving along Route 78 in Pennsylvania, we passed a vehicle and suddenly noticed the bike felt really odd. I did not touch the brakes at all and was able to get to the shoulder without a problem. I glanced at the speedometer as we slowed and thought I saw we were doing about 30 mph when suddenly we were not moving. I think my wife asked what was wrong, but I don’t remember answering her. We could see nothing wrong as we dismounted the bike. But as my wife stepped over the tongue of the trailer to get to the safer side of the road, she said, “Here is the problem.” The tire was wedged up inside the wheel well of the trailer, being held on by the shock only. I guess the torsion arm rod had broken. Now the story gets interesting. Even before I could get out my Rescue Plus card to call for a tow, a 60-foot tractor trailer pulled over and the driver, who we only know as Tom, came walking back to us. He asked what he could do to help as he was a rider, also. Not a Gold Wing rider, but a motorcyclist. He asked where we were headed and when we told him the name of the hotel we had reservations at, he said that it was right on his way and he would be glad to transport the trailer and contents to our hotel. We unloaded our trailer into his and then lifted ours into his. That was a feat in itself, and I suspect adrenalin had something to do with it. The bike was short on fuel so we called Tom on the CB and told him the address again while we pulled off to get some gas. Now, I can guess you are all thinking as we were, will we get our stuff back? Well, when we arrived at the hotel, Tom was waiting for us. We unloaded our trailer and belongings into the parking lot of the hotel and bid Tom a very, very grateful goodbye. He did not accept anything for his effort, but my wife
talked him into letting us buy him dinner. Thanks Tom. After checking in at our hotel and grabbing a cup of coffee, I hit the internet to locate a repair facility or someone who knew of one. I had my Gold Book out, but before I could even open it, GWRRA Member Scott McCaffrey answered my inquiry and told me about Lebanon Valley Honda, in Jonestown, Pennsylvania, a California Sidecar dealer. Scott was in Holland (yes, the Netherlands, bless the internet) at the time or he would have been at the hotel to help. Thanks Scott. As it was late and I was drained, the option of calling in the morning seemed to be the best. We called at 9 a.m. Friday morning and Dick, the owner, said he would send a truck for our trailer, and we should follow along on our bikes. By now our traveling companions Kevin and Georgia LeBlond, MA District Directors, had joined us. When we got to LVH, Dick had already been in contact with California Sidecar and they were overnighting a replacement frame to the dealership. Way to go California Sidecar. They did ask how old the trailer was as there is a 10-year warranty and there was talk they might cover the installation of the new frame also. I did not have the paperwork, so I paid for the work and by Saturday at 2 p.m., we were on our way again. Over two weeks after the incident, California Sidecar called for all the paperwork. They were going to cover the repair – the frame install, labor, one tire, the towing, and we would split the overnight shipping amount – all more than fair in my mind. I had the other tire replaced just because I like to do it that way. In conclusion, without Tom, we would have been on the side of the highway with traffic roaring past, for unknown hours. Scott came to the rescue with the appropriate dealer to get things sorted out, Lebanon Valley Honda came through with the expertise (thanks to Paul the mechanic) to get things taken care of, and most of all, California Sidecar did a yeoman job of getting the replacement frame and my new tires shipped to the dealer overnight. What started as a pretty hairy incident ended with a lot of people coming together to help us out and keep our vacation plans on track. Thanks to all for all the acts of kindness.
