9th December 2013.
To Whom It May Concern In 2013, Mr. Gwuihyun (Glenn) Shin was a student in Architecture Design 4, which I coordinated. Gwuihyun and his cohorts designed “The Conan Doyle Mystery Theatre,” which consisted of a proscenium arch theatre, a black box theatre, a cinema, and associated facilities on a site in central Melbourne. It was a complex project for which Gwuihyun received first class honours, reflecting his impressive design and communications skills. Gwuihyun also did very well in his other design subjects over the course of his Bachelor of Environments degree at the University of Melbourne. Gwuihyun is from South Korea. He has lived in Australia for five years (two in Brisbane and three in Melbourne). Before coming to Australia, Gwuihyun spent two years in the South Korean Army in fulfillment of his military service. As a result, he is very mature and self-‐reliant and he has a lot more life experience than many of his Australian classmates. Gwuihyun has been interested in drawing and model (toy) making since childhood. He is also an accomplished break-‐dancer and he has worked semi-‐professionally in this area in South Korea and also Brisbane. Gwuihyun sees synergies between architecture and break dancing, which he has exploited in his design work at the University of Melbourne. Gwuihyun now wishes to proceed to the next stage of his architectural career by obtaining experience in an architecture practice in Australia. I believe he would be an asset to any practice, not only because of his design and communication skills, but also because of his willingness to learn and to try new and different things. I confidently recommend him to you and I also wish him well in the future. Sincerely, Dr. Derham Groves Senior Lecturer in Architecture and the Architecture Major Coordinator The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning The University of Melbourne Victoria 3010 AUSTRALIA.

Investigation
This building is designed for the honour of Arthur Conan Doyle who wrote world famous mystery series ‘Sherlock Homes’ . It is located at the junction of Spancer and Bourke st, which many people coming from Southern Cross station passed by. Extraordinary building will suggest strong impression to people during a day and night time. This building will include two different mystery play theaters and one cinema for public. It also contains various facilities such as a restaurant, a bar, and open public space on rooftop. Three concepts will arouse people’s interest and curiosity while seeing, feeling and experiencing the building as they read the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Conviction
Main concept of form ‘Twisting’ is dictated by the first criminal’s action after murdering which they tends to transform and twist the facts that can be important evidences for investigation. Overall form is reflected this idea and notices people the beginning of mystery. Second concept is investigation, which make people travel inside building and find some clues like an investigator. This will lead people to main proscenium and, finally find the evidence on the ceiling of the theater, which is the end of mystery.

This proposal of gateway is designed for the Wyndham city which is medium sized and developing city in Victoria. The city is located between Melbourne and Geelong. We need to show the future image of city’s aspiration and growth.
LOUVER SYSTEM : VISUAL CONTROL
FORM & VOID SPACING BETWEEN PANELS : SOLID AND VOID EXPERIENCE
Conceptual idea for this design is ‘Materialization of Place’ . It will provide a sense of process of growing city. For the proposal, 6 design intentions lead the whole design of gateway, which is Alignment, Motion & Dynamism, Form and Void, Path perception, Marker and Light. To do that, We used the one of parametric design skills, Sectioning, allowing us to design aesthetically and structurally.

STUDLY PARK BOATHOUSE Village typology

STUDLY PARK BOAT HOUSE VILLAGE TYPOLOGY
Change height to be fitted with surrounding
This village-like building is the proposal of boathouse located at Studly Park in Victoria. Main environmental features are that small river stream is in front of the site and steer hill behind. In this project, I needed to use same design strategy of one famous architect, Alvaro Siza, I am allocated in this course. He is a contextual architect and functionalist. At the same time, he plays with user perspectives to provide special experience in the building by blocking and opening views. I used his design strategies to create suitable building on the site. The building is divided into 5 different units which are public toilet, cafe kiosk, kitchen, restaurant, and boathouse. Each unit has different function and role. Between 5 different units I designed pathways that can be used by staff and also, users. Users can make their own journey through whole site and experience every aspect of building. Every units are situated on different level of land. I tried not to design a huge building on the site because it would not be fitted with surroundings and break peaceful and beautiful natural atmosphere. 18

This proposal is to design a gallery on Harring island in Victoria. This gallery will suggest three different subjects which are Indigenous inhabitants of Australia, British colonizers and Reconciliation between the two. The conceptual idea for this building is overlapping histories. Aborigine’s and Australian’s histories cannot be separated. Colonization can be interpreted as invasion or new settlement at the same time. They have to try to understand each other and make themselves together. The building is comprised of a wing dedicated to Aboriginal culture and history, a second wing dedicated to the history of colonization in Australia, and finally a wing dedicated to reconciliation between the two cultures. At the centre of the building, there is a lawn and, stage under the building-Gallery No.1. This tilted lawn can be used as natural open event hall.

Perspective view of curtain in theatre
CURTAIN DESIGN FOR PLAY THEATRE (Studio 4_Fire_SM2, 2013) Conceptual idea is bringing different visual effect depending on the perspective of audience. When looking at the curtain from the side, face will be prominent, but when looking at it at the right angle it will be ambiguous. The montage of Moriarity’s face, who is a suspect in the Holme’s story, was created with composition of three different persons. After finishing the play, people will recognize the face that is criminal’s face. http://youtu.be/ZcSBMoX9TRw (Video)

Entire curtain design
DIGITALIZED BUILDING (Creative Project_SM2, 2012) The idea was begun with how architects engage to ease global warming. White colour has the high albedo effect which reflect more light waves instead of absorbing them and having heat load from sun. Therefore, I thought white buildings should be built more in the future. However, these can be boring white boxes so, I suggest digitalized building that can express variation of colour, form and texture on facade.
