ABORIGINAL CULTURE AND ART CENTER OVERLAPPING HISTORIES (sm 1_2nd, 2012)

OVERLAPPING HISTORIES PROJECT Aboriginal Culture and Art Centre LOCATION Harring Island in Victoria DATE Semester 1,2012 NOTE Architectural Design Studio 1_Earth This proposal is to design a gallery on Harring island in Victoria. The gallery will suggest three different subjects which are Indigenous inhabitants of Australia, British colonizers and Reconciliation between the two. The conceptual idea for this building is overlapping histories. Aborigine’s and Australian’s histories cannot be separated. Colonization can be interpreted as invasion or new settlement at the same time. They have to try to understand each other and make themselves together. The building is comprised of a wing dedicated to Aboriginal culture and history, a second wing dedicated to the history of colonization in Australia, and finally a wing dedicated to reconciliation between the two cultures. At the centre of the building, there is a lawn and, stage under the building-Gallery No.1. This tilted lawn can be used as natural open event hall.

This village-like building is the proposal of boathouse located at Studly Park in Victoria. Main environmental features are that small river stream is in front of the site and steer hill behind. In this project, I needed to use same design strategies of one of famous architects, Alvaro Siza, which I choose for this course. He is a contextual architect and functionalist. At the same time, he plays with user perspectives to provide special experiences in the building by blocking and opening views. I used his design strategies to create suitable building on the site.

The building is divided into 5 different units which are public toilet, cafe kiosk, kitchen, restaurant, and boathouse. Each unit has different function and role. Between the 5 different units I designed pathways that can be used by staffs and also, users. Users can make their own journey through whole site and experience every aspect of the site. All the units are situated on different levels of ground. I tried not to design a huge building on the site because it would not be fit with surroundings and break peaceful and beautiful natural atmosphere.

Conceptual idea is ‘Materialization of Place’. It will provide a sense of growing city in progress. To articulate the main concept, we decided 6 design intentions, such as Alignment, Motion & Dynamism, Form and Void, Path perception, Marker and light, to deliver the image of new and futuristic city. These are illustrated by one of parametric design skills which is sectioning. It will suggest constructible design and structure but also, showing futuristic image and the city’s aspiration toward the future of them.

faith! A place of worship in london spiritual presence (competition entry, 2014)

SPIRITUAL PRESENCE

JOURNEY END

Religion, as a collection of belief, often intended to explain the meaning/ origin of life based on different cultural systems. Each derives their morality and preferred life styles, resulting in conflicts in all kinds scale. This has been major issue in human civilization for thousands of years, and such problem need to be addressed and minimized. To understand conflicts between religions, we were determined to investigate the phenomena of spiritual presence. Presence is a common concept across religions, stating God’s presence in each human being. Dubbed by philosopher and anthropologist, Ludwig Feuerbach, “God is to speak, the outward projection of human’s inward nature.” The act of worship is hence, a conversation with God, your inner-self. As a result, the form emerges as a device for the public to investigate and realized their inner-self or their “God”. The universality of design aimed to embrace the cultural diversity of modern City of London in the long run. The design intended to increase tolerance between people with different believes/ atheists by offering a space for all religion, the sacred and the profane.

riverbank champagne bar in france L’ESPRIT FRANÇAIS (competition entry, 2014)

L’ESPRIT FRANÇAIS PROJECT River Champagne Bar LOCATION Next Seine River & Pont des art bridge DATE 07.2014 NOTE Competition Entry

Roof Viewing Deck

L’Esprit Français (i.e The spirit of France), is a concept that resembles the spirit of France in the form via champagne. It is located along river, ‘La Seine’, adjacent to the Pont des Arts and prominent positions from the Louvre Museum. The champagne bar performs as the social hub for both tourists and local Parisians.

Shading Device

This building focuses more on reflecting site-specific characteristics around rather than form following concept. The form does not dominate surrounding features but, it achieves perfect harmony with contexts in terms of color, building height, features and etc. The reason why we aim to achieve these is the site specification of the champagne presenting the meaning of champagne in France. Champagne is only produced from Champagne region of France in the world. Only small amount of grapes in this region can be turned to sparkling wines named Champagne. It is grown and treated by specific climate, water, soils and method. This specialty should be also shown from the Champagne bar that contains these high quality champagnes of France.
