AUGUST 2013
Change is good. My favorite time of the day is when I get up from my desk, walk away from email and computer screens and circulate the fitness floor. I see determination,, elation and concentration on the faces of our members and guests. We are all on the same journey here, no matter what current fitness level we may experience. We invest our time here at the Fitness Centre because that allows us to reap those rewards on the outside by living our lives to the fullest – healthier and happier. Because we are all on the same path to wellness, I invite you to reach out to the fitness staff and ask questions, learn more about our equipment and be a bigger part of our community. It is easy to get comfortable in a routine and have a comfort zone for exercise and fitness. But, let’s choose the harder path together. Let’s choose to challenge our bodies and spirits, increase our determination to be healthy and change old habits together. If you are a runner – try the rower. If you are a powerlifter, try a yoga class. If you are a “left side” of the gym member, try the right side. If you are a group fitness fanatic, try the weight room. If you haven’t changed the 10 key pieces of equipment you’ve used for the past two years, ask a trainer to show you something new. This is the month to challenge your fitness level and changing your routine is an effective way to do that. Our bodies are amazing beautiful machines. It adapts to routine after about 30–90 days. What are you going to do to change and get closer the tough path to wellness?
Yours to a Healthy100,

Fighting Back to Health by Jacob Glassmeyer, Commit 2 Fit Certified Personal Trainer I absolutely love what I do as a personal trainer, but it wasn’t always easy for me to live a healthy, active lifestyle. When I was just 25 years old, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Shortly thereafter I was undergoing surgery. Two months after the initial surgery, I was re-diagnosed again with the same type of cancer, but it had now attached to my lymph nodes in my torso. After spending five months going in and out of the hospital a week at a time, the recovery period and chemotherapy treatments took an extensive toll on my body. After a year of treatments and doctor visits, I was left with an out of shape body unable to perform a simple task such as walking up a single flight of stairs. My weight had been a yo-yo of changes going from about 260-280lbs. After multiple rounds of chemotherapy treatments I ballooned

to over 300lbs! My life was a wreck but as God would have it there were people in my life that encouraged me. At that moment in my life I knew something had to change. My journey to be a fitness professional began over 20 years ago. I had always been active, whether it was teaching martial arts/mixed martial arts or serving in the U.S. Army as a Tanker for five years. I always thought nothing could ever slow me down. Unfortunately, cancer did.
to a teenager who is trying to improve their personal self-image; followed by a long time client of six years who is wheelchair bound with no sight; and then finish the day off with a school teacher whose goal is to loose weight. I have always had a passion to work with a variety of different people who have different fitness goals and I understand the different steps it takes to improve the body as a whole.
I absolutely love what I do...”

Today my portfolio of clientele includes a variety of individuals. An average day for me can consist of working with a professional golfer who tours Korea and Japan; the next hour I’ll be teaching kick-boxing
|
But, after making it through that I made a personal decision to take my health more seriously and make it an even larger part of my life than it had been in the past. I refocused my energy on working out, martial arts, Thai boxing, and today I hold a 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. That was just the beginning, now I have been certified through several educational entities and continue to learn more about my passion for martial arts.
One of the biggest passions I have though is ensuring that our youth understand the importance of fitness and nutrition. These two things cannot only improve their lives but it can also save them. I have been blessed with the opportunities for the last few years to work with local leaders to battle childhood obesity by speaking at the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts of America, local elementary, junior and high schools, explaining the benefits of proper nutrition and activity. Even to this day, inspiring young people to lead a better life through movement is the most satisfying part of my job.

Super-seed? Could quinoa (keen-wah) be the new super-seed? Have you heard about the food quinoa (keen-wah) that is beginning to sweep the nation? This seed has been around for ages, but it is now growing in popularity due to its enormous health benefits, versatility and ease of preparation. In fact, The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has officially declared 2013 as “The International Year of the Quinoa.”
Nutrition
Besides the similarity to a grain and the versatility of quinoa, the big reason why this is becoming such a popular side dish is because of the amount of vitamins and minerals packed into these tiny seeds. Here are a few health benefits of eating quinoa: Quinoa is one of the most protein-rich foods because it contains all nine essential amino acids. Quinoa contains almost twice as much fiber as most other grains. Fiber is most widely known to maintain regularity, but it also helps to prevent heart disease by reducing high blood pressure and diabetes. Fiber also makes you feel fuller for a longer period of time which can assist in weight loss. • Quinoa is a great source of Iron which helps keep red blood cells healthy. • Quinoa is rich in magnesium which helps to relax blood vessels and alleviate migraines. • Quinoa is high in Riboflavin (B2) which improves energy metabolism within brain and muscle cells.
• Add nuts and fruits to cooked quinoa and serve as breakfast porridge or mix into some oat meal. • Use noodles made from quinoa and add your favorite pasta sauce. • Add quinoa in salads and sandwiches just like alfalfa sprouts. • Add quinoa to your favorite vegetable soups. • Add ground quinoa flour to cookie or muffin recipes. Try out these ideas and discover for yourself why quinoa has become so popular throughout the United States and the rest of the world. Christina Bowling, director of Clinical Nutrition for Celebration Health Assessment, recommends a single portion of quinoa, which is about a half cup.
• Quinoa contains much more heart healthy fats than grains. • Quinoa provides over twice as much calcium as whole wheat.
Call to schedule a nutrition consultation with Christina - (407) 303-4013.
|
• Unlike other grains, quinoa is also a good source of nutrients like folate, copper, and phosphorus.
AUGUST 2013
“Quinoa pasta is my favorite,” said Christina, “but there are several other quinoa packaged products that are pretty good as well.”
|
• Quinoa contains 43% of your daily value of manganese which is an antioxidant that helps cells from becoming injured by free radicals.
The amount of nutrition in these seeds has most people curious as to how they can incorporate quinoa into their diet. First time experimenting with quinoa? No problem! Here’s how to easily prepare your next vitamin packed quinoa side dish: When preparing quinoa, first rinse the seeds in a strainer until the water runs clear to remove any powdery residue. Then, bring one part quinoa and two parts liquid to a boil. After the mixture is brought to a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cover for about 15 minutes or until the seeds become fluffy and a tail like germ appears. For a roasted flavor, try toasting them in a dry skillet for about five minutes. Here are some great ways to incorporate quinoa into a meal:
THE FITNESS CENTRE AND DAY SPA e NEWSLETTER
Most people mistake this food as a grain, however quinoa can be a great grain substitute for nearly any dish. This seed is actually part of a leafy plant relative to spinach, beets and Swiss chard. A quinoa seed is flat, oval shaped and usually white or yellowish in appearance, but can also be bright red, orange, pink, purple, tan, or black in color. Have you seen this sold at your local store? When cooked, they expand in size and expose a short, thin tail-like germ. The seeds themselves are smooth and creamy, but the tail has a crunchy texture.

The Benefits of Heat Therapy

The difference between dry and wet heat therapy
Have you pampered yourself in the dry sauna or steam room offered at the Celebration Fitness Centre yet? Although both rooms offer heat therapy for health and relaxation purposes, do you know the unique benefits of each? When you enter the dry sauna, you will first notice that the room’s interior and seating areas are entirely built of wood. Saunas rely on a 160-200 degree dry heat; much hotter than a steam room. The wood not only absorbs the moisture in the room, but it also provides a temperate seating area. An air vent in the room lets in outside air to circulate and minimize any extra moisture build up.There are two styles of saunas: conventional saunas warm the air in the room and infrared saunas warm objects using charcoal or active carbon fibers. The Celebration Fitness Centre offers an infrared sauna, in which charcoal is heated radiating dry heat into the room. There is no need to pour additional water into the electrical unit, in fact doing so may cause a fire. A sauna is ideal for people with conditions that can be aggravated by humidity, such as rheumatoid arthritis and similar conditions. When you walk into the steam room, you will notice the interior is a ceramic tile finish with a slanted
rooftop. This is ideal for the 110-120 degree, 100% humidity wet heat emission. Unlike a sauna, a steam room is nearly airtight to lock in all the moisture. Steam rooms are ideal for anyone who suffers from allergies, congestion, asthma or other respiratory conditions. Heat therapy is known to stimulate blood flow and circulation, helping lower blood pressure. Heat therapy also relieves tired, achy and stiff muscles. Sweating also helps clean deep into pores and leaves you with a healthier complexion. Both a dry sauna and steam room are available in the Celebration Fitness Centre’s locker rooms for your health and relaxation pleasure. Please take advantage of these facilities at your convenience. People who are pregnant, have heart disease, high or very low blood pressure (or who are taking any medication that affects blood pressure), epilepsy, those taking antibiotics, or those using any type of mind-altering drug (like stimulants, tranquilizers, alcohol) shouldn’t use saunas or steam rooms. As always, you can talk to your health care provider to make sure using a sauna or steam room is safe for you.

A New Approach to to Ancient Healing

AUGUST 2013
The Celebration Day Spa will be offering Acupuncture as a signature service beginning August 20!
One of the primary tools in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a safe and tested approach to holistic healing used to relieve pain, prevent disease, and restore balance in the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific locations of the body to elicit a therapeutic response. While some may be quick to assume that acupuncture is painful, many patients report a feeling of deep relaxation and increased energy both during and following treatment.
NEW Service Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy, called “qi”, that circulates through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. An imbalance in the flow of qi throughout a meridian is how disease begins.
In 1997, acupuncture needles were reclassified from “experimental” to “medical device” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The National Institutes of Health released a consensus statement in the same year endorsing acupuncture for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as post-operative pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Appoinment Availabilities: Tuesday & Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm Initial Acupuncture Session: This session includes an initial evaluation and short treatment session. The treatment session will may include acupuncture points, cupping, oriental massage, electric stimulation, acupressure, stretching and relaxation.
