Group Fitness A TYPICAL CLASS Think dance school. Loosen up and get ready to jam! 1. Your instructor will first take you through a warm up with simple moves designed to work one body part at a time—from your shoulders to your chest to your hips. 2. You’ll then move onto the rehearsal phase, where you will try some uncomplicated but ultra-fun dance combinations that follow the latest music and hottest dance trends. Each rehearsal phase is followed by a complete bust-out performance where you go crazy with the moves you’ve just learned. Following these you’ll get to take a breather in the recovery phases. 3. Fresh Fall Favorites Make the most of the fall harvest by eating fresh fruits and vegetables that are available this season. These healthy choices can be incorporated into your daily diet in a variety of ways—from snacks to main dishes to healthy desserts. While there are many more to choose from, start with these six to create a delicious, colorful and healthy menu this fall.


Nutrition Apples Harvested late summer through fall, apples come in a variety of colors and flavors. They are delicious raw, baked in pies, roasted, and sautéed. What to Look For: To pick the perfect apple, look for apples that are firm, brightly colored, and free of bruises.The skin should be clean and shiny; a dull finish indicates the fruit may be past its prime.

What to Look For: Pick a squash that is rock solid and heavy for its size. Its skin should be matte; a shiny finish is a sign that the squash wasn’t ripe when it was picked.

Butternut Squash With its sweet flavor, butternut squash has become a fall favorite. There are so many delicious ways to use this versatile hard-shell squash, from soups and salads to lasagna and pizza. Roasting butternut squash renders it sweet and tender. It can also be sautéed or boiled and mashed.

Grapes Grapes ripen towards the end of summer with the harvest continuing into fall. In addition to being a healthy snack, grapes can be used to jazz up salads, main dishes, and desserts. Power Up Your Workout with The Prowler

For decades sleds have been used in conditioning, strength and metabolic training with sports teams. The workout sled has always been popular among sports teams because of its ability to improve acceleration, or first step quickness, which is a key component in all athletic events. More recently, however, fitness experts have discovered the benefits of incorporating the sled into everyday workout regimes. As a result, The Prowler sled has become widely adopted by workout facilities, including Celebration Fitness Centre & Day Spa. While sled training is a departure from traditional forms of training it provides a new challenge. This high intensity workout is an excellent source of lower body and core strength development. It also aids in fat burning and increases endurance. And because it helps to increase muscle mass and decrease fat, it is an effective tool for changing your body composition. What if you do only aerobics or only weight training? Implementing only one of these types of training produces results—but the benefits are limited. However, if you incorporate both cardiovascular (aerobics) and strength training into your workout you will optimize your results.


Training Tips

Cardiovascular training by itself doesn’t increase your metabolism. However, when you couple it with strength training, you not only burn fat during your workout, but you also increase your post-workout metabolism. This is a huge benefit compared to what cardiovascular training does alone: when you stop exercising you also stop burning calories. Using The Prowler sled to strength train is a great way to supplement your cardiovascular training.

Before You Start Before you start sled training, be sure to consult one of our certified personal trainers. Due to the intensity of The Prowler workout, you should start at a slower speed, gradually increasing your pace. It is also recommended to perform no more than two sled workouts per week.

I’M A MEMBER BECAUSE …

Lauren Charles Member since January 2013 “Celebration Fitness Centre & Day Spa has been a part of my life since I moved to Celebration 15 years ago at the age of three. I was in the nursery that used to be here, and then I moved to child care at age five. Now, as a college freshman, I teach BODYFLOW™ as a volunteer at The Fitness Centre. Throughout the years I have had a multitude of reasons for joining the Fitness Centre. A majority of my life was spent struggling with my weight. I was always sick and wasn’t happy with the way I was living my life. About four years ago, my dad was diagnosed with diabetes. I decided that I needed to change my lifestyle to be healthier in order to encourage him to do the same. I lost about 50 pounds as a result. However, I became a more dedicated member because I found Les Mills group fitness classes. I can take as many classes as I want! I started out with BODYATTACK™

and then months later I took up BODYFLOW™ and BODYSTEP™. Just recently, I started taking BODYPUMP™. When I am not taking classes, I love to run on the treadmills because I can play Sudoku while working out. I am extremely biased to the group fitness classes, however. I get bored really easily, but when I go to a group fitness class I know that I will be working out and entertained for an hour. The variety of work outs that are taught in the group fitness classes have also taught me more about how to get a well-rounded work out. If I miss a class then I have a handful of my favorite ab workouts that I’ve learned in class. As I’m looking for gyms in Boston, where I will be attending Boston University, I realized that it is hard to come by a gym that offers the extensive variety of group fitness classes as the Fitness Centre does. After taking Les Mills classes for a little over a year, I knew that I needed to find new ways to challenge myself. After contemplating the idea of becoming a Les Mills instructor, my BODYFLOW™ instructor at the time came up to me after class one day and encouraged me to go to a training. So I took that as a sign to take the next step and finally get certified. All of my group fitness instructors have impacted me in some way, especially Jeremy, who was my first instructor. And as I have started to teach BODYFLOW™ classes, the entire BODYFLOW™ team

has been so incredibly welcoming and supportive to me. I couldn’t have had a better group of mentors to guide me in the beginning of my journey. As a group fitness instructor, I want my class members to not see fitness as a competition, but see it as an individual journey of continuously challenging yourself to do your best. Exercise isn’t about winning or losing—it’s about achieving personal goals. I think that if you stop thinking of what everybody else is doing and focus on your own strengths and weaknesses then it’s easier to be prouder of yourself as you begin to recognize your accomplishments. Keeping an active and healthy lifestyle not only add years to your life time, but it also makes those years better lived. I would say to anyone: ‘Find a way that makes you happy to work out. Once you find the one [workout] that you enjoy, working to be healthier isn’t a chore. Make a schedule that makes exercise a part of your routine and stay focused on whatever your personal goal is.’ ”

Pain with Acupuncture

Many people suffer from chronic neck pain. Whether the result of whiplash, poor posture, repetitive movement or simply stress, the pain and discomfort can be unbearable. There is a solution, however. According to recent studies, acupuncture therapy can provide you with the relief you need. Acupuncture is one of the most cost-effective and beneficial treatments when experiencing neck pain, which is the third highest reason Americans seek this form of therapy. And in many cases, acupuncture has worked for patients whose conditions could not be solved using conventional approaches, such as prescription or over-the-counter medication. For these reasons, many people are turning to this Chinese-based therapy. Studies show acupuncture to be effective in relieving certain types of neck pain, particularly those caused by whiplash. Some studies also suggest that acupuncture can treat degenerative neck disorders such as ankylosing spondylosis and cervical spondylosis. How it Works Fine, sterilized needles are inserted locally and distally to reduce inflammation, improve blood flow and reduce pain. Needles are stimulated at 15 minutes and retained for a totally of 30 minutes. Chinese cupping and oriental massage may be applied to tight and sore muscles to improve blood flow and break up adhesions. Acupressure and herbal medicine are sometimes used in conjunction with acupuncture for neck pain. Applying acupressure to the neck muscles can reduce spasms and lessen pain, leading to a relaxed state and a heightened sense of well-being. Depending on the patient’s condition, certain herbal products can be used to improve circulation and blood flow and ease muscle contraction reducing blood pressure, for example, and increasing the circulation of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals. For best results, clinical trials suggest at least two sessions a week for 1-3 months for best results.
