7 Tips for Living Healthier, Happier & Greener in the New Year By Christina Bowling, MS, RD, CSSD, LD Director of Clinical Nutrition for Celebration Health Assessment

.....................................

As we step into 2014, many people have already set their New Year’s resolutions. One of the most popular resolutions every year, it seems, is to lose weight and to improve the diet to a more nutritious and balanced intake of nutrients. Here are some seven tips to help you get started on your new healthy year.

Nutrition

5. Make a small change every day. If you really want to keep your resolution(s), it’s best to start off by making small changes every day to slowly work toward your ultimate goal. For example, if your goal is to lose ten pounds, try non-fat milk in your latte one day and the next day, try adding 15 minutes of free weights at the gym.

2. Eat less sugar. We all know we should eat less sugar but how much should we have? The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar or 24 grams for women and about 9 teaspoons or 36 grams for men

6. Eat nutritiously 80% of the time. Making 80% of the calories you consume healthy and nutritious and saving the remaining 20% for notso-healthy-foods makes changing your eating habits more manageable. Eliminating indulgences may initially help you lose weight, but it’s not a realistic, long-term solution. If you eat well the majority of the time, a few treats here and there won’t hurt your overall weight loss efforts.

3. Drink less alcohol. The average American drinks almost 100 calories worth of alcohol each day. Over a year that is 10 pounds. Not only does alcohol contain “empty” calories, but it also stimulates appetite and lowers inhibitions making it easier to overeat.

|

Schedule your nutrition consultation with Christina at (407) 303-4510.

JANUARY 2014

“My goal is to ensure each client discovers his or her plan for the “right bites” of nutrition to fuel their daily lives.”

|

4. Eat fewer preservatives. Preservatives in foods are designed to prevent bacteria growth and spoilage, but sometimes they can also prevent you from enjoying good health. While the effects of food preservatives on the body can vary with age and health status, looking into the potential harmful effects of preservatives in foods may help you reclaim good health and protect your personal well-being against toxic damage. The inflammation caused by the preservatives may make it harder to lose weight as well as breathing difficulties, heart damage, digestive system damage and cancer.

7. Don’t obsess over what the scale say. The scale measures overall weight loss, but it doesn’t tell you the whole health story. Obsessing over the scale every morning is not a healthy habit or an accurate gauge of your progress. Water retention and hormones can add a few pounds to the reading, and if your weight-loss plan includes strength training, you may even gain weight from increased muscle mass while still losing fat. Instead of getting caught up in what the scale says, measure your weight loss in inches and how your clothes fit.

T H E F I T N E S S C E N T R E A N D D AY S PA e N E W S L E T T E R

1. Eat more non-starchy veggies. Not only are they super low in calories, but they also offer a plethora of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Good examples are leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, peppers, mushrooms, radishes, summer squash, and sugar snap peas.

Tips to Stay Fit in 2014

Keeping Your Resolve a

Although If you’re like most people, you’ve alr lutions. And like most, your list probably includ include eating better, losing weight, or workin tips will help make achieving your New Year’s

Create a Plan Once your goal is set, the next step is to create a plan. This will allow you to map out a step-by-step path to achieving your goal. It will also keep you reminded of your goal when placing your plan in a visible place such as on your refrigerator or cabinet door. Set Mini Goals Breaking down your overall plan into mini steps helps alleviate the fear of not reaching your goal. For instance, simply stating that you want to lose 50 pounds can be daunting and overwhelming. However, setting a goal to lose 2 to 5 pounds a week seems much more attainable.

|

Get Professional Assistance Sometimes professional help is needed to accomplish your fitness and health goals. Personal trainers can provide you with expert advice on how to stay fit. Research also shows that assistance from fitness professionals can greatly improve your success rate.

JANUARY 2014

Find a Support System Having family and friends to keep you accountable is an essential part of succeeding at your goal. They will be there to provide you with the motivation you need to stay focused and the support to get through the rough patches of your journey. They will also be there to make sure you don’t give up, providing you with the encouragement you need to keep moving forward.

Choose an Attainable Goal One of the most important steps to achieving your resolution to stay healthy and fit is to set a goal that is attainable. Setting unrealistic goals, such as looking like a swimsuit model in thirty days, will only discourage you when the goal is not met. However, striving to perform some type of physical activity and to eat healthy each day is a realistic goal that can be achieved. One Step at a Time Back to Health and Wellness Laura began her fitness journey nearly one year ago. While she knew it would take time and dedication, she was committed to developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. ..................................... After undergoing therapy at Florida Hospital Celebration Health for nearly two years to treat chronic pain, Laura decided it was time to get in shape—especially since she had planned to return to a career in Nursing. “The goal was never to lose weight but to become fit and healthy again,” she said thinking about her career plans. “Everything I did was to increase my endurance.”

MemberWelcome Spotlight

As long as you keep moving forward, you are improving, one day at a time, one step at a time.”

“I was extremely short of breath,” she said. “So, I decided to start walking and do strength training in the fitness room at home. After I built up [my] endurance some, I returned to the Fitness Centre and began the program Anthony had outlined for me.” When she returned, Laura began a strength training and cardio workout program, exercising two to three times per week. This regimen proved difficult at times, but according to Laura, she received the support and inspiration she needed to continue her journey to health and wellness with four personal trainers—Anthony, Alexis Saire, Rayann Cruz, and Nerida Adorno. “[They] took an active interest in my fitness and kept me on track in regaining fitness in my life,” said Laura. “They did it so professionally while sharing their extensive knowledge.”

She had walked into Celebration Fitness Centre on total disability, taking several different types of medications. Today, she is medication-free, actively pursuing her nursing career, and 50 pounds lighter! Reflecting on her health today compared to how she felt a few years ago Laura said, “I am healthier in my mind, body and spirit than I was on that fateful day, April 7, 2006, when the pain become unbearable. I was [also] able to do my Practicum … without issue and still keep up my strength training.” Laura is grateful to Florida Hospital Celebration Health and the Celebration Fitness Centre for helping her to achieve her goal to get fit and healthy, and in turn, return to Nursing. Along with developing a healthy diet, the most important key for Laura is perseverance. She encourages others who are traveling the road to health to “keep moving.” “As long as you keep moving forward you are improving,” she said, “one day at a time, one step at a time.”

Soon Laura was able to resume a life without pain.

Discovering Your Full Potential We are all seeking it—it defines what you do and becomes who you are. The desire to excel athletically requires a plan to optimize your health for peak performance. In just one seamless afternoon, you get the most comprehensive, convenient and personalized care and results from experienced professionals focused on creating your plan for peak performance. As athletes we all need to measure our performance. How fast? How far? How many competitions completed? More importantly, how do we improve our performance beyond just logging more miles, doing more intervals, and lifting more weights? What if there was a way to train, eat, and drink differently that would improve your performance and enable you to recover faster? Our new Athletic Performance Assessment does exactly that. As experts in understanding how your body works – your biomechanical engine – we now can show you how your body is performing and what you can do to go farther, faster with fewer injuries and quicker recovery. When you train and compete your body burns fuel – carbs and fat – but also produces a by-product called lactic acid, that,, if not eliminated, will build up, slow you down and ultimately force you to stop. You also sweat to cool your body and along with your sweat you lose vital electrolytes (e.g., salt), both of which need to be replaced in the right amount at the right time or there are serious consequences. The Athletic Performance Assessment (APA) has been developed through a collaboration between our Sports Medicine and Executive Assessment experts, and leading sports nutritionists to measure exactly how your body performs and how to make changes to improve your performance.

What’s Welcome New Bod Pod/Body Composition Measures body fat percentage and lean tissue.

Resting Metabolic Rate Provides an insight into total daily energy expenditure – the energy you burn each day for living functions.

Sweat-Electrolyte Analysis

Metabolic Efficiency Panel/Exercise Metabolic Test Ideal test to determine how much carbohydrate and fat is burned during aerobic exercise, as well as what proportion of these fuels your muscles prefer per stage (workload). The base or off season protocol is geared towards detecting your fuel utilization (carbohydrate and fat burning ratios) at various intensities/workloads determined by Heart Rate (HR), watts or speed and RPE. This data is vital to adjusting your daily diet and fuel intake surrounding training.

Hydration Assessment Urine specific gravity (USG) measures the concentration of a urine sample and provides a value to rate hydration status. Individual hydration and dietary strategies are provided, so that you can more optimally prepare for, manage, and recover from sweat and electrolyte losses during training or competition.

Lactate Threshold Analysis (LT) Lactate values have been shown to be one of the best performance indicators. LactateThreshold measures the body’s ability to buffer or “clear” lactic acid while exercising. Based off of this measure, heart rate training zones are identified. Allows the athlete to train more efficiently and help prevent overtraining issues.

Nutritional Analysis

Identify exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength by evaluating flexibility, corestrength and functional movement patterns. The primary goal is to identify asymmetries, imbalances, restrictions, and weaknesses that lead to faulty movement patterns.

Review and assess the athlete’s diet, performance training, test results, history of injury, supplement use, and medications. Educate the athlete on how they fuel their body and the essential vitamins and minerals that sustain energy.

While skin is flexible, it’s not meant to be pulled or stretched – Clarisonic’s patented micro-massage motion works with skin, not against it, oscillating at more than 300 movements per second to gently massage away impurities trapped within pores. The benefits of using the Clarisonic PRO Sonic Skin Cleansing system include:

Treat your body as well as you treat your face – The body brush head gently exfoliates, removing dead skin cells, to smooth the skin on your back, legs, arms and feet. Daily use leaves skin silky soft and healthy looking with a reduced appearance of dry patches.

Gets rid of the bad to let in the good – In just one minute a day, the sonic action removes impurities from skin and pores so creams, serums and moisturizers are absorbed better.

Powerful yet incredibly gentle – Unlike cleansing methods that use harsh chemicals or rely on friction alone, the PRO is gentle enough to use twice a day – even on skin affected by complicated conditions such as rosacea or acne.
