For the past several years, my passion for fitness and wellness has grown, and my desire to help others lead healthy lives has grown with it. Each time I walk the fitness floor and see new members I am excited to get to know them, know their fitness goals and listen to their concerns or questions. Through understanding our members, we start to learn how to serve our community. I am the manager for the fitness center today because I was encouraged along my path to fitness by other members, group fitness instructors, and trainers here at the Fitness Centre. Thanks to each and every one of you who saw my passion and desire and encouraged me to do a little bit more each day. YOU are the reasons I am here and trying to pass that encouragement on to others. My challenge to each of you this month is simple, get to know one another. The more you know about your fellow gym-mates the more you can encourage one another on to new goals and new accomplishments. Do you know their names or are they only “the girl who is always on the leg press before BodyPump,” or “the guy who likes to do abs when I am on the Kinesis.” Please help us build our community and help each other reach a new level of fitness.

Yours to a Healthy100,

Laura Jones Fitness Centre Operations Manager

by Patrick Faulk, Commit 2 Fit Certified Personal Trainer and Exercise Physiologist The new TechnoGymTM circuit represents more than just an update of your strength line. This equipment circuit was carefully selected to give you the best possible workout here at the Celebration Fitness Centre. The Fitness Centre & Day Spa spoke with members and training staff during the selection process in order to ensure this circuit was both functional and all-inclusive. TechnoGymTM has spent years dedicating itself to becoming a leader in the ďŹ tness industry and one of the foremost leaders in equipment/training research. Their equipment is speciďŹ cally designed to offer the best biomechanical options aiding in the training of individual muscles with superior comfort for the user. No matter what your goals are, the proper strength routine is one of the keys to accomplishing them. The TechnoGym equipment is your circuit for goal completion. This line of equipment was designed to allow the users to hit every major muscle group in the body while also allowing for full stabilizer and functional strength building as well. This included the addition of some new machines that will allow the user to isolate muscle groups further than ever before. Some of the new machines include a new Chest Fly (designed to help isolate pectoral muscles), Vertical Traction (offering different ways to isolate latissmus dorsi and arm muscles), Shoulder Press, Multi-Hip (allows the user to perform a multitude of movements working muscles from the hips, legs and glutes), along with the High/Low Row machines (offering you different variations on the traditional rowing movement). We took a traditional circuit and added in some new machines to give you the best possible workout you can have!

The humble apple offers a bounty of health beneďŹ ts

Nutrition We’ve all heard of the phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but do you know why this fruit is such a popular choice to keep us healthy? Studies have shown that apples have bountiful health benefits. Apples contain over 200 different nutrients which positively affect the body’s function. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult should fill half of their plate with fruits and vegetables for every meal. It is recommended for everyone to eat at least 2-3 whole fresh fruits per day (2-3 cups).

Here are a few of the many health benefits of adding more apples to your diet: • Colon Cancer Prevention – Apples have a high level of pectin which is highly beneficial to the colon. One apple is 20% of the daily recommended intake (more than a bowl of cereal claiming “high fiber”). Apples are most known for their colon benefits and ability to aid in the body’s regularity.

• DetoxifyYour Liver – We are constantly consuming toxins, whether it is from drinks or food, and your liver is responsible for clearing these toxins out of your body. Apples nutrients assist with this in order to ensure your liver is pumping out the toxins properly. • Other Health Benefits – Studies have shown that eating more apples may help lessen asthma problems, promote weight loss, decrease risk of heart disease, and aid in breast, liver, and lung cancer prevention. Incorporating apples into your diet will help you lead a longer and healthier life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating well will greatly impact the quality of your life. So make this fruit “the apple of your eye” too.

|

Call us to schedule your nutrition consultation at (407) 303-4013.

J U LY 2 0 1 3

• Diabetes Management – Women who eat at least one apple a day are 28% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who don’t eat apples. Apples are loaded with soluble fiber, the key to preventing blood sugar swings.

• Boost Immune System – Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin. Recent studies have found that quercetin can help boost and fortify your immune system, especially when you are stressed out. This fruit provides 14% of the daily value of Vitamin C which will also boost your immune system.

|

• Protect against Parkinson’s Disease – Research has shown that people who eat fruits and other high-fiber foods gain a certain amount of protection against Parkinson’s disease. Scientists have linked this to the free radical-fighting power of the antioxidants contained in the apples.

• Bone Protection – Apples contain phloridzin and boron that increase bone density and help protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis.

T H E F I T N E S S C E N T R E A N D D AY S PA e N E W S L E T T E R

“Don’t peel your apple,” said Commit 2 Fit Personal Trainer Anthony Sharpe. “Two thirds of the fiber and many of the antioxidants are found in the apple peel. One apple has around 80 calories, 5 grams of fiber and are fat, sodium and cholesterol free. Most apples are still picked by hand, so be sure to wash before eating.”

• Lower Cholesterol – Apples are able to lower LDL (low-density lipoprotiens-“bad” cholesterol). Studies have shown that people who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16%.

Stronger. Healthier. Together. Two years ago, Neville De La Rosa knew it was time to take the necessary steps to become healthier and active. He had reached a weight of 350 plus pounds and had been just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. When he found out about his diagnoses, he was devastated and could not believe his health was in jeopardy.

Member Spotlight “I didn’t really know exactly how much I weighed, because the scale stopped at 350,” Neville De La Rosa recounted. “And, I had to check my blood [glucose levels] everyday and inject insulin 2 times a day. I was also on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I was taking a total of nine pills a day at the age of 40!”

I’m not doing anything amazing. I’m just moving.”

Neville started off slow with some basic strength exercises and light cardio. Now, almost nine months later, he is attending group fitness classes, including Zumba, SH’BAM, BODYFLOW, BODYVIVIE, BODY STEP, as well as his favorite, BODYPUMP; and doing a wide variety of strength training exercises and swimming. “I really enjoy deadlifting with a 70 pound kettlebell”,

A typical week for Neville includes working his chest and back on Mondays and Fridays, leg day on Wednesdays and every day incorporating some cardio.

After getting his latest blood results, Neville was happily surprised to find out his blood pressure and cholesterol levels were down to normal, as well as his blood glucose levels and he no longer needed to take any medications or check his blood daily. “I’m not doing anything amazing,” said Neville. “I’m just moving.” Neville plans on becoming a personal trainer and is currently taking online courses with Bryan University.

T H E F I T N E S S C E N T R E A N D D AY S PA e N E W S L E T T E R

In late September of 2012 Neville was asked by his sister Victoria, Florida Hospital CHA – Health Ambassador, if he would be willing to come to the Fitness Centre with her to put in some volunteer hours and begin a workout routine.

said Neville. “It gets in a great sweat! If you’re not sweating while working out, you might as well go home. I have also been able to increase my max bench to 315 pounds, which at the age of 41 is not bad. I remember lifting that when I was 20 years old.”

Swelling & Pain? Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage

J U LY 2 0 1 3

by Jackie Pajarillo Lead Massage Therapist/Esthetician What is the lymphatic system? Blood’s main responsibility is to distribute oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the body. The lymphatic system collects and removes waste products left behind in the tissues. Our body operates like a two-lane highway; the main lane is the blood bringing oxygen in and the other lane is where the lymph removes the excess waste. The lymphatic system is a pathway through which fluid flows from the small cell spaces right into the bloodstream and has vessels just like our circulatory system does, but does not have a “pump” like the heart. In order to clear the excess “lymph” in some cases the lymphatic system must be “pumped” manually through massage. What is lymph? “Lymph” is a clear fluid that travels through your body’s arteries, circulates through your tissues to cleanse them and keep them firm, and then drains away through the separate lymphatic system. So lymph is basically the fluid and protein (plasma) that has been squeezed out of the blood. The lymph is drained from the tissue in microscopic vessels called lymph capillaries. What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage? Lymphatic Drainage Massage stimulates the lymphatic system, which is responsible for keeping the body healthy. It is an alternative treatment that uses gentle massage, which feature rhythmical, wave-like movements to activate lymph and interstitial fluid circulation. Lymphatic fluid also carries bacteria, toxins, cholesterol and viruses away from cells as stated earlier. The lymphatic system works in conjunction with our immune system and helps keep us healthy by moving these toxins and circulating them back to the heart then to the kidneys and finally excrete these toxins through the urinary system. Our lymphatic system is our disease-fighting machine. When our vessels are blocked, our body cannot fight against viruses, fungi, and bacteria.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage: There are many benefits in receiving lymphatic drainage massage for both the body and face. This gentle massage will enhance and stimulate the lymph system to drain stagnant fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissues, and filter out toxins. Lymphatic drainage massage detoxifies the entire body, reduces fluid retention and edema (swelling), reduces swollen limbs, and has a gentle, calming effect. For the face, lymphatic drainage massage reduces puffy eyes and “eyebags,” builds and stimulates collagen fibers, and it tones and contours the face.

10 Tips for Glowing Wedding Skin

Use your Fingers to Blend Foundation The best technique for applying foundation is to simply use your finger and not a brush. And, adding a dime dollop of moisturizer to your foundation will help keep your skin moisturized. Use an Eye Cream with Light Diffusers There isn’t a miracle drug to take that will instantly fix puffy eyes. The quickest way to reduce their appearance is with makeup. It is best to start with an eye cream that has light diffusers, which help to reflect light naturally to make the eye look brighter. Then, use a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly and apply that to the darker spots.

Use Skin-Specific Moisturizer For dry skin: You want to hydrate but you don’t have to use an oil-free formula since you need that extra oil to help take care of your extra dry skin. For breakout-prone skin: Choose a moisturizer that does not block pores (non-comedogenic). Use Salt Scrub or Sugar Scrub It is important for brides to remember to exfoliate their tough elbow and heel skin to ensure they don’t look “ashy” on their big day. Schedule a Professional Facial You’ll want to book a few facials a couple times before your big day to help decrease clogged pores and stimulate blood circulation. This will help promote healthy glowing skin to ensure you have flawless skin on your wedding day.

Wear SPF 30…On Your Lips Apply a lip balm with SPF 30 daily will keep your lips hydrated and smooth.

Manage Oil with Blotting Sheets Excessive face washing will kick oil production into overdrive, which can cause more breakouts. So oil blotting papers are a quick and easy way to remove oil from your face during the workday.

|

Your Makeup Brushes Need a Bath Too Cleaning your make-up brushes is a step that most women don’t think to do. It is important to remember that every time you swipe on your blush with a dirty brush, you add a layer of acne-causing bacteria to your skin. Shampooing your brushes is easy.

Battle Acne with Benzoyl Peroxide If you’ve got a problem pimple or a problematic skin area, one of the best ways to treat it is to dab benzoyl peroxide gel on the blemish.

T H E F I T N E S S C E N T R E A N D D AY S PA e N E W S L E T T E R

Evaluate Your Skin Early If you really want to get your skin in perfect shape for your big day, you’ll need to start a smart skincare routine 6-9 months in advance. If you don’t have that long before your wedding day – any good skin care habits that you can start will help!

Super Foods Not only does summer give us plenty of opportunities to have fun in the sun, it also offers a whole new assortment of seasonal “super foods” to keep us looking and feeling healthy. Whether you want to flaunt your new summer glow or protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays, here are some super summer seasonal fruits and vegetables that will improve your beauty from the inside out.

Welcome Tighten & Brighten your skin We all want our skin to have that healthy radiant glow during the summer. Eating foods that are rich in beta-carotene and lycopene will enhance that sun kissed look, especially in individuals with a paler complexion. The color shift in skin is associated with the pigments that give some fruits and vegetable their reddish vibrant hues. Vitamins A, B, C, E and K are also cited as the most active vitamins to promote skin health and encourage collagen and elastin production to tighten the skin.

• Collard greens

Oral Care Let your smile be your best summer accessory. Most people know that calcium promotes strong bones and teeth, but there are also several summer seasonal fruits that can aide in a bright smile as well. Vitamin D is crucial for oral health since it allows your body to absorb and use calcium. Surprisingly, some citrus fruits help keep your gums healthy by strengthening blood vessels and connective tissue. Incorporate these summer foods into your diet to maintain your healthiest smile and be proud to show off those pearly whites:

• Carrots

• Grapefruits

• Mangoes

• Limes

• Red bell peppers

• Strawberries

• Sweet potatoes

• Tangerines

• Blueberries • Broccoli • Tomatoes Beautiful hair Vitamin C is essential to keep hair looking shiny. It also promotes good blood flow to the scalp, keeping the skin and hair hydrated and looking its best. Vitamin B is another vitamin that is also great for the growth and overall health of your hair. You can also increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids found in many fish to promote that eye catching sheen. These summer foods will leave you with the shiniest and healthiest hair possible: • Avocados • Tuna • Watermelon

• Peas • Spinach • Turnip greens

Eye Protection The Florida sun can be unforgiving to your eyes and excess exposure over time can trigger cataracts and other vision issues. Most people believe that cataracts only affect people of their grandparent’s age, but cataracts can start to develop as early as your 20’s and 30’s. You can protect your eyes externally with a hat and sunglasses, but you can also protect your eyes internally with some of the food you consume. Food that contain Lutein and zeaxanthin compounds actually filter out damaging blue-light rays. To give your eyes the most protection possible, incorporate these summer seasonal foods into your diet:
