OCTOBER 2013

Focus on Feeling Better. Living a worry-free life is important to your well-being. When demands in life increase, it drives our stress levels to the point of compromising our health. Stress is a naturally occurring reaction to challenges and has an impact on mental and physical behavior. Being able to recognize common symptoms can help avoid serious health problems that are linked to stress. How we handle that stress can have an impact on our health and restore balance to the body and soul. Massage and other forms of self-care are great ways to reduce stress. As a manager for multiple departments, I have learned to manage my stress by setting limits and indulge in a massage once a month. Each session leaves me feeling rejuvenated, and has been effective for relieving muscle tension and renewing energy. In addition to providing health benefits, spa treatments are the tools for long term prevention of the elements that create stress in our life. I encourage you to discover new ways of finding balance in your life with our natural-based products, treatments, and services. Our specially-trained and compassionate spa therapists are here to help you achieve a life of greater health, happiness, and well-being. Join the spa club today to experience your journey to serenity and peace. Receive your monthly treatments, exclusive discounts along with a monthly gift.

Don’t be Afraid of the Dark Proven reasons to eat it for your health.

By Christina Bowling, MS, RD, CSSD, LD Director of Clinical Nutrition for Celebration Health Assessment

Chocolate has been unwrapped as a healthy dietary addition for most. Of course, it should be organic dark chocolate minimally sweetened and without milk additives. Since raw cacao is the main antioxidant and nutritional provider, it should be well over 70% cacao and more bitter than sweet. You can get raw cacao nibs or powders if you want to realize cacao’s maximum health benefits. But dark semi-sweet high cacao content bars are more accessible, convenient, and yummy. And there has been a good deal of research to support the health benefits of snacking on 100 grams (3.3 ounces) of dark chocolate often.

Nutrition Aging mentally intact A recent study of hot cocoa beverage consumption supported by the National Institute on Aging and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was conducted at the Harvard Medical School and recorded in the August 7th online version of the journal Neurology.

Erythema is when the skin starts turning pink from sun exposure. The MED test measures that threshold. So if you want to suck up more UVB sunshine-sourced vitamin D without burning, skip the Mars Bars and eat high organic cacao content dark chocolate. Cardiovascular health This was a massive epidemiological study conducted cooperatively by several Boston medical institutions using the 4,970 participants aged 25-93 years who participated in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Family Heart Study.

They selected 60 participants with an average age of 73 who were not suffering from dementia. They drank two cups of hot cocoa daily without any other form of chocolate for 30 days.

This group discovered that “chocolate consumption is inversely associated with prevalent coronary heart disease (CHD).” In other words, those who ate chocolate had less coronary issues, and the more that was consumed, the lower the risk for CHD. Published in the 2010 journal, Clinical Nutrition.

Of those 60 participants, 18 had tested for impaired brain blood flow with some level of brain damage. After consuming cocoa beverages, those 18 showed significant improvements with brain blood flow and working memory tests, while the participants whose brain blood flow was regular had no changes with their test scores. The research report conclusion: “There is a strong correlation between neurovascular coupling and cognitive function, and both can be improved by regular cocoa consumption in individuals with baseline impairments.” Minimizing sunburn

After the 12 week period, the minimal erythema dose (MED) level was twice as high for the HF group.

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammation marker produced by a stressed liver. It can relate to autoimmune diseases or infections. It’s associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. This study discovered among a few thousand Italians without chronic disease. Included were those who ate no chocolate, those who ate milk chocolate and those who ate only dark chocolate. Those who consumed dark chocolate moderately had the lowest CRP serum levels. The study concluded with “… regular consumption of small doses of dark chocolate may reduce inflammation.”

OCTOBER 2013

They divided 30 participants into two groups of 15. One group was fed high flavanol (HF) chocolate while the other 15 were fed low flavanol (LF) chocolate daily for 12 weeks.

A study titled “Regular consumption of dark chocolate is associated with low serum concentrations of C reactive protein in a healthy Italian population” was published by the journal, Nutrition, in 2008.

|

Another study, published by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2009, determined that chocolate consumption helped protect against ultra-violet (UV) sunshine exposure.

The study was titled “Neurovascular coupling, cerebral white matter integrity, and response to cocoa in older people.” The researchers were concerned with increasing brain blood vessel flow and testing brain function on senior citizens.

One Member’s Journey from Intimidation to Transformation Out of all the effective workout options available at Celebration Fitness Centre, group fitness classes may be one option people fail to consider in their weight-loss journey. If you’re like member Judith Rankine, the thought of “struggling” through your workout in front of a group of people may not be the most alluring option.

MemberWelcome Spotlight

Accomplishing all this while enjoying myself and losing 70 pounds...it’s a miracle!”

“I was intimidated…so I committed to walking three miles-a-day, six-days-a-week for over a year to get ready, Rankine says, “Funny that I felt I needed to get in better shape to take classes, so that I could get in better shape.”This process helped Rankine create small attainable fitness goals. She began taking two-to-three group fitness classes of Sh’bam a week, and then she gradually added other classes: BodyFlow, BodyVive, Zumba, BodyStep and BodyPump.

“In these classes we are using our cardio fitness, balance, flexibility, coordination, strength and rhythm, however I found that I gained all that and much more.” Rankine says she finds a joy in movement and dance and the self confidence from physically challenging herself to conquer new and demanding routines. These are things a monotonous treadmill could not do; and that’s what motivated her to come to Celebration Fitness Centre. Still, if working up a sweat with a group of peers still doesn’t encourage you to Sh’bam your weight off, take Rankine’s word of advice: “Pick a class that looks interesting and just show up; don’t over think it.” She says the instructors are welcoming, informative and well trained to help everyone, especially beginners. Alternate options are also given to people who workout on all levels, they help you work at your own pace.

|

Link Here for Group Fitness 6 Week Challenge Information.

OCTOBER 2013

While you still may be intimidated by a group fitness class, Rankine says that it’s the joy of the music,

encouragement from the instructors and lack of monotony that kept her going back for more.

|

“My favorite class is Body Jam on Thursdays with Terrence and Stacey Dee,” Rankine says, “The synergy between the two of them is wonderful and the class is so much fun I smile through the whole thing, and feel lucky to be a guest at their ‘dance party.’These two outstanding, dedicated and energetic instructors have helped me transform my life.” Rankine is still not done setting new fitness goals for herself either. “Right now one of my goals is to master the bird pose in Body flow, which was unthinkable six months ago.”

Judith, pictured here, before starting her journey. THE FITNESS CENTRE AND DAY SPA e NEWSLETTER

“I have been a member for a couple of years,” Rankine says, “and for a long time I only felt confident working out in the lap pool or on the treadmill. It was my fear of failure that kept me from joining the group fitness classes.” That fear, did not totally stop Rankine from attempting a group fitness class indefinitely. The once intimated member, who has degenerative hip joints and was, how she describes, extremely overweight, was drawn to the classes because they looked like a lot of fun. She became determined to start taking classes by implementing a workout regimen that would get her ready to take on the group fitness challenge.

did you know how they benefit you? By Randy Keller Lead Massage Therapist at Celebration Day Spa

Did you Welcome know?

Americans spend around 4 million dollars per year on over-the-counter cough and cold remedies. Studies have shown that many of these remedies have little to no real effect on cold symptoms.

Most all of us have heard of the saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Taking into consideration that most of the over-the-counter cold and cough remedies show little to no ability to prevent colds or reduce the duration of a cold, we need to consider other methods of prevention. A study funded by the government’s National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine has found that massage may help increase your immune system. This study showed that people who received a 45-minute massage had an increased number of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that play

Most people recognize that massage therapy reduces stress and tension on your body and improves the quality of your sleep. However, many people do not realize that the body is a self-healing mechanism, and when you exercise, eat right, and reduce your stress level by receiving massage therapy, this increases your body’s ability to heal. When your body is operating efficiently it is also much easier to avoid catching a cold. So instead of spending your hard-earned money on cold and cough remedies that have been proven largely ineffective, consider adding massage therapy to your routine, and stop those colds before they happen.

This includes newer, natural remedies containing herbs such as Echinacea. Even taking high doses of Vitamin C has proven to be mostly ineffective in reducing the duration of a cold. The same goes for nasal decongestants. Since most colds go away on their own in about a week, time seems to be the best remedy for a cold.

a large role in defending the body from disease. Additionally, researchers detected a sharp drop in pro-inflammatory proteins called cytokines, which are believed to alter brain chemistry and induce symptoms of depression if left unchecked. Stress and inflammation are the primary building blocks of cancer, diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. Both are reduced with massage in as little as ten minutes.
