Finding balance. Living a healthy lifestyle can be easy when there are options available to maintain balance of spirit, mind and body. Often times, life stress can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle pain and digestive disorders. As stress builds, exercise, eating well and relaxation is the key to optimal health and wellness. As a CrossFitter and Acupuncturist, I try to be proactive in the choices I make each day to prevent illness and enhance performance. I incorporate monthly Acupuncture treatments in my personal wellness plan to alleviate pain, maintain mental alertness and manage life stress. As a result, I often leave treatments refreshed and pain free and more importantly, chronic pain issues are minimal. How can acupuncture help you? Make acupuncture part of your workout of the day and avoid injury and burnout. Receive treatments 1-2 times weekly for more acute health concerns and once a month for overall wellness. I look forward to seeing you soon. Please feel free to stop by the Fitness Centre and Day Spa on Tuesday and Friday between 9:00am -5:00pm.

Organic vs. Non-Organic We have all been to the grocery store and had to decipher between the USDA organic tomatoes to the left or the non-organic cheaper tomatoesto the right. Which one do you choose? Conventionally grown produce generally costs less, but is organic food really safer or more nutritious? Let’s start with the basics of what the word “organic” actually means. The word organic refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution by natural means. Here are some key differences between conventional farming and organic farming:

Nutrition Conventional Farming • Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth. • Spray synthetic insecticides to reduce pests and disease. • Use synthetic herbicides to manage weeds. • Give animals antibiotics, growth hormones and medications to prevent disease and spur growth. • Apply natural fertilizers, such as manure or compost, to feed soil and plants. • Spray pesticides from natural sources; use beneficial insects and birds, mating disruption or traps to reduce pests and disease. • Use environmentally-generated plant-killing compounds; rotate crops, till, hand weed or mulch to manage weeds. • Give animals organic feed and allow them access to the outdoors. • Use preventive measures — such as rotational grazing, a balanced diet and clean housing — to help minimize disease.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed. The USDA Organic seal tells you that a product is at least 95 percent organic. If you plan to eat organically, look for this label on food. Some of the most important produce to buy organic include Apples, Bell Peppers, Carrots, Celery, Lettuce, Potatoes, Strawberries. Most people believe that organic food is safer to eat because of the lack of pesticide residue on the produce, but studies are now showing that organic food is also healthier for you as well. According to the ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012), “A study conducted at the University of Barcelona shows that organic tomatoes contain higher levels of phenolic compounds than conventional tomatoes. Phenolic compounds are organic molecules found in many vegetables with proven human health benefits. The UB’s Natural Antioxidant Group, headed by lecturer Rosa M. Lamuela, had previously demonstrated that organic tomato juice and ketchup contain higher polyphenol content than juice and ketchup made from conventionally grown tomatoes.” These polyphenols, natural antioxidants in plants, are considered to be associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, and some forms of cancer. According to Rosa M. Lamuela, “the benefit of taking polyphenols through foods is

This would be more beneficial to your health than the intake of supplements. The reason why organic produce contains more of these healthy antioxidants is because of the fertilizers they grow in. Organic farming doesn’t incorporate nitrogenous fertilizers, which ward off insects and other conditions, therefore, organic plants respond by activating their own defense mechanisms, increasing the levels of all antioxidants in the plant. The more stress the plants suffer, the more polyphenols they produce; the more polyphenols found in your food, the more beneficial antioxidants you consume through your organic food.

Adventure Runs are great way to test your physical and mental toughness

The oldest recorded form of obstacle type racing was presented thousands of years ago called the Stadion which was an ancient Greek running event in the Olympic Games. Today, this old tradition still lives on, but with much more excitement. Obstacle racing has exploded in popularity these past few years with some added oomph; now in the form of Adventure Runs and Mud Runs. These runs are designed to push your body and mind to the limit. One competition is even designed by the British Special Forces to put its competitors through the most extreme terrain/obstacles. Many adventure runs will have participants plunge into ice water (many times more ice than water), army crawl under barbed wire, jump over fire, run through a canopy of live electric wires, drudge though quicksand-like mud, and cliff dive, on top of running the already exhausting distance. Adrenaline junkies flock from around the world to participate in these competitions. These runs are not only designed to tests your physical strength, but your inner strength as well. At times you will feel like you can’t go on (you’re too tired, you have a cramp, the next obstacle looks too intimidating), these course obstacles can represent difficult events in life (a bad break-up, loss of a job, anything). You can either give up, or face your problem head on. Finishing a race not only provides a great sense of

accomplishment, but it can also boost one’s confidence. According to Outside Magazine, in 2011, as many as a million people ran obstacle races in the United States alone and the trend is growing. Although, you may not be an adrenaline junkie or an extreme athlete, there is a race for everyone. Many adventure runs are created more for fun and less about the competition. These adventure runs, also called Fun Runs, are themed and prizes are awarded to the participants that are the most outrageously dressed. The 5K Foam Fest is a great example; instead of army-crawling under barbed wire through mud, participants slip ‘n slide through a foam pit, and instead of jumping over fire, they must jump through a giant bounce-house-like maze. Whether it be competitive or just for fun, almost all adventure runs donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity of their choice. In fact, according to the Tough Mudder website, in 2011 $2 million was raised for the Wounded Warrior Project. If earning a true sense of accomplishment, enjoying the camaraderie of your fellow participants, and having a great time all for a good cause seems right up your alley.
