JULY 2011 HELPING RESCUED ANIMALS FIND FOREVER HOMES FREE 4 ALL
EXCLUSIVE: WILLIE HODGE AUTHORS HIS FIRST ARTICLE
From the Editor’s Desk APPY JULY! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. I know all the doggies were a bit happier in Durham when the fireworks got rained out. Hopefully, in other areas they were well equipped with their thunder shirts and lots of love from their people. A belated Happy Father’s Day to all the great Dads out there. I met quite a few of you at the Whole Day for Pets Event at Whole Foods in Chapel Hill. What a great day! So many H2H fans came out and said hello. My dad was right beside me at the booth for most of the day as well as my trusty companion, Pierre. We sold so many of our adorable Love is Adoptable T-shirts. If you’d like one for your favorite person or dog, you can find them on our website, www.heart2homemagazine.com. This month’s issue is devoted to animals with disabilities and the people who care for them and people with disabilities and the animals that help them. I first met our cover model, Willie Hodge, at the Safe Haven for Cats Tuxedo Ball. I saw this little orange paw sticking out from a woman’s arm. Little did I know I was meeting a local celeb. I feel in love instantly as I’m sure most do. You can read about him in our feature article as well as in our Happily Ever After Story. We also feature an article about Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws, an organization who trains assistance dogs to do everything from detect when a person’s blood sugar level is about to drop to assisting with tasks around the home. Our other feature is about Riley, a sweet corgi who assists in an elementary school remedial reading program. Thanks to all of you who continue to support Heart2Home and encourage us to keep on keeping on! Next month’s issue is already underway and it’s going to be another fabulous one! Stay tuned and stay cool.

Jackie:
Javier :
Are you wondering where all that purring is coming from? It’s me, Jackie! One of my very favorite things to do is snuggle and show you how affectionate I am. I would love to have a scratching post and fun toys to play with… and don’t forget a sunny windowsill, too! I’m on a special diet, so my previous owner was no longer able to keep me. I sure hope that you’ll give me a chance and take me home with you! After a long sunbathing inside, I would really enjoy curling up in your lap. I am front declawed.
I’m waiting for that special someone to take me home. If my handsome good looks don’t stop you in your tracks, my super sweet personality surely will. I enjoy daily naps soaking up the sunshine in front of a bright window. Upon emerging from my slumber, I’ll stretch my arms on a tall, sisal scratch post or a wavy cardboard scratch pad and crunch on a few tasty kibbles from my fancy food bowl. My favorite part of the day will be greeting you at the door and spending my evenings by your side.
Joe: What’s that zooming around the
Droopy:
I’m one big pup that’s looking for someone to take me in and love me forever. I need an owner with patience and one who is willing to work with me on what I’m allowed to chew on and where I should potty. I have a beautiful singing voice but your neighbors will not appreciate it. For this reason I must not go to a home with neighbors close by. I aim to please and if you’re consistent with training and provide yummy treats for me when I’m good, I’ll learn new things in no time.
room at lightning speed? It’s me, Joe. I’m one cute kitten on the hunt for my new family. I love to run around and chase after laser lights, cat charmers and furry toy mice. I’ll be zipping by in superstar fashion getting out all my kitten energy, while providing you free entertainment as you watch my silly ways. When I’m all worn out, I’ll want to curl up next to you so I can recharge for my next adventure. I know there’s plenty of room for little ole me, so come meet me today!
Tabitha: I'm the gorgeous gal
they call Tabitha. It's doubtful you'll find any kitty as pretty as I am – you certainly won't find anyone as charming. Can you believe I was found as a stray and was possibly left behind when someone moved away? Who could ever imagine life without me once I've become a part of it? I won't let the past get in the way of my glorious future, though. I'd love nothing more than to spend each evening curled up by your side and purr as you brush my lovely coat. Come meet me today!
Rocco:
I’m one super happy fellow who just needs that special someone to come scoop me up. I was sick when I was younger, but I’ve regained my health and my spirit is shining ever so bright now that I feel better. I’m still a puppy, so I need help learning everything great big dogs know. I’m doing pretty well with most things so far. I’m working very hard on house training, walk fairly well on leash and enjoy playing with other dogs I’ve met here. Do you have the time and skills to teach me obedience skills?

This super sweet laid back kitty is Buddha. Buddha has had a rough time; he was adopted twice but returned due to some issues that were caused by a urinary tract infection. He has been treated and put on a special diet that has solved the problem. Buddha will need to stay on his special food so he doesn’t get anymore UTIs. He’s hoping that the third time is a charm and is ready to find a wonderful family to take him home. He is very small in size, about five pounds.
Kloie
wide-open, innocent blue eyes is a special needs kitty and very unique so she will need a very special home. Since Sugar is deaf, she must be the only pet in the household. Not being able to hear has caused her to become startled easily so she should be in an adult home only. Her nickname is “Screech” because not hearing herself meow, she doesn’t have any volume control! Her meow is so loud it sounds more like a screech than a meow.
Wags is an amazing lady who adores
is a sweet lovable kitty who was previously adopted into a loving home, but the owner was unable to keep. She gets along well with other cats and is ok with dogs, but does not care for big dogs very much. She likes to play and is a fan of catnip. She follows us around in the morning as we get ready for work talking to us and begging for attention. She loves to be played with and enjoys being petted as well.
nothing more than to entertain and love on her person. She enjoys running outside and following around the yard, house and neighborhood. Wags appears jumpy on walks around lawn mowers, bicycles, active basketball games and skateboards. Though we are working on desensitizing her she likely will need regular exposure to these types of surroundings until after 1 year of age. She knows to sit for her meal and wait until released to eat.
Serenity:
Buddy
This sweet girl has had a scary start to life and is still trying to learn that people are good. We aren’t sure of her past but something definitely affected her and she will need a really special family to help her through her issues. Serenity is affectionate and sweet with us and like to give kisses, however, she is still very unsure of strangers. She may never be a happy go lucky dog that loves to be taken in crowds or public places but for someone that wants a companion, she would be wonderful.
was found wandering the streets with a telephone cord wrapped around his neck for a leash. He has certainly moved on up in the world since then! He is a young robust boy, around a year old and 70 lbs. He is very playful and would love to have a wrestling buddy in his new home. He is doing well working on commands and does great with kids. His foster home does have cats and some livestock. His coat is so shiny and lustrous, you will just want to snuggle with him all day!

Minnie: I’m an adorable brindle
beagle/border collie mix spayed female around 10 years old and 48 lbs. My family’s home was devastated by the tornado that struck recently and my people have nowhere to keep me now. I keep a very clean kennel and am house-trained. The people here think I’m lucky to have made it through the tornado safely. They discovered that I broke my leg and it never got set and is very painful for me, so I’m getting it fixed by a great veterinarian, and then I get to go rest in a foster home while I heal. and white American bulldog mixed female around three years old and I am about 44 lbs. I am a mini girl with a big personality. I came in as a stray, so they don’t know much about my history, but my wonderful foster mom has been working with me and has discovered some great things. Since being in foster, I know commands such as sit, down, and paw. I also know to go into my crate when my foster mom says cage. I am great with kids and love playing with other dogs.
Vanna:
I’m a beautiful golden brown lab/boxer mix female around two years old and 32 lbs. The volunteer lady says I’m such a pretty girl! I’m full grown at this nice size too! Peanut :
(terrier mix) Peanut is an adorable and very affectionate dog despite everything she has been through. She snorts when she is happy, and likes to prance around. Peanut gets along great with dogs, cats and loves people. Will you please consider her to be part of you family?
Cooper :
(golden retriever) Cooper loves to be around people and – if allowed – would be an 85 lbs. lap dog. He is seven years old but has good energy and loves to go on walks and play fetch. When he gets excited, he will spin around and around which just makes you laugh. Cooper will make a wonderful companion for any dog lover. Cooper loves to curl up and snuggle! He is currently in a home with another dog and they enjoy each others company.
Bailey: (cairn terrier) Bailey is
an adorable dog. She has a relaxed temperament and enjoys being scratched on the head. She loves to sit in the sun and go on walks and would really thrive in a home that will give her enough daily exercise but also allow her to relax the rest of the day. Bailey lives with other small dogs and she is doing great with them. Bailey’s most endearing trait is her constantly wagging tail when you say her name.
Petey:
(cattle dog/terrier mix) Petey is full of love and energy. He would be a great exercise mate. He is constantly playing with his foster siblings and is submissive when they let him know it’s enough. Petey loves to cuddle, and doesn't shed. We think Petey will be forever grateful to anyone who wants to love and protect him for the rest of his life. Petey was found as a stray on Hwy 210 just standing on the side of the road.
Rusty:
(Australian cattle dog (blue heeler mix) Rusty is a very handsome dog, sporting a dark red coat with a white and blue ruff as a collar and blonde freckled legs. Rusty is a very friendly, smart and loyal dog. He will be the ideal pet for just about anyone provided he gets an acceptable amount of exercise and he will be happiest with either/both an active dog or human playmate.

Breed Spotlight Golden Retrievers
T
O LOVERS OF GOLDEN RETRIEVERS there is a saying that they are like potato chips – you just can’t stop with one. golden retrievers are addictive and most people who own them have invited multiple goldens into their families. Golden retrievers are friendly, loving, reliable, trustworthy and generally make wonderful family pets. According to the American Kennel Club, the golden retriever breed originated in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s and was used predominantly for hunting. The breed was developed by Lord Tweedmouth, with a goal to create a superb retriever suited to the Scottish climate, terrain and game. Tweedmouth crossed his original “yellow retriever” with a tweed water spaniel (now extinct). Later integrations of Irish setter, bloodhound, and more tweed water spaniel produced the retriever we know today. Their working ability and temperament has made them useful hunting companions for hundreds of years. They also make ideal guide, assistance, or search and rescue dogs. Quarrelsomeness or hostility towards other dogs or people, or an unwarranted show of timidity or nervousness, is not part of a golden retriever’s character. True to the roots of the breed, goldens love the water and love to retrieve whatever you will throw so they can bring it back for more. The golden-colored coat is the hallmark of this versatile breed, but it can range from creamy white, light to dark gold, to red. The perfect family for a golden retriever is one that will include their pet in everything they do. This is a dog who wants to be with you and please you. goldens should not be kept outside as they become distressed when alone and can display their displeasure with barking, digging or developing other negative attention-getting behaviors. Owning a golden is a commitment that they will be an “inside-the-house” member of your family. Things to know and consider are that golden retrievers have a thick double coat of fur and are prodigious shedders. They must be brushed and bathed often to keep their coat and skin healthy and to prevent matting of their beautiful fur. They are medium to large in size and are active, so they don’t generally make good apartment dogs. Golden retrievers suffer more than other dog breeds from certain diseases including cancer, food and environmental allergies and hip dysplasia. A local golden retriever owner who has made a difference in the community is Randall Terry Jr. Through his generous donations in honor of his beloved goldens, the N.C. State Veterinary School recently opened and named in his honor The Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center. If you are ready to welcome one of these magnificent dogs into your family contact a local golden retriever rescue group or a reputable breeder to learn more. You might find that you will - like potato chips - need more than one golden retriever in your home. Bella: Being adorable is easy for
Brandi:
It’s hard not to smile around Brandi; her constant grin is contagious! Brandi is a beautiful young female pit bull mix who gets along with dogs, kids, and even cats! She is house & crate trained too. Brandi is very submissive, and often asks for attention with an extended paw. She enjoys both lounging around the house, or going on active adventures. Brandi loves her dog buddies and becomes quite the socialite around them, so we would love to see her go to a home that already has dogs.
Bella, but what is beauty without brains? Bella has been described as a “WONDERDOG” by her foster mom for the intelligence she displays. After all, she is an obedience school grad! Bella is quiet and very rarely barks, unless a stranger knocks, so she’ll be a fantastic protector and best bud! She needs room to run and play, so active families are a plus! Once playtime is over, she will lay by your side with a Nylabone and chew to her heart’s content.

Her favorite things to do are retrieving toys, spending time with people, and snuggling! Her current foster mom takes her to doggie day camp where she is a staff favorite! Remy requires little training and is ready for any deserving family to love her.

Huber will keep you laughing with his goofy antics like rolling around on the floor and staring at you upside down!
is an obedient, easy going, silly ball of energy! Meg will come to you home-friendly if you are a first time adopter! She is housetrained, crate-trained, treat motivated, walks on her leash, and does not jump on furniture unless invited. Tango and Waltz:
Thumbelina loves attention and is very sweet and affectionate. She is a pretty girl and very small for a full grown adult. Thumbelina loves to be around people (though she is not a lap cat) and is extremely personable. She has lived with other cats and would be OK living with a layed back feline. They say good things come in small packages and Thumbelina is proof of that. Come meet this pint sized beauty and see if she doesn’t charm you into falling in love with her.
These two sweet boys are just adorable. They are very close (so much so that their foster mom calls them The Twins.) They are playful and affectionate. They have lots of energy and would love to go to a home together where they can bring lots of love and fun!
Disco:
Anyone out there looking for a good time? Disco certainly is! Disco isn’t really much of a party animal but he does love to have a good time. Playing, cuddling, being sweet as can be-there are tops in his book. Disco would love a home where he can dance (or not) to his hearts content. Don’t let this sweet boy get away. Come meet him today!

a sad past. She came to us underweight, covered in fleas and the victim of abuse. Even then her amazing spirit showed through and everyone who meets her falls in love with her. She has made an amazing recovery to a healthy little girl in the short time she has been in her foster home and is now ready for a family of her own. She needs an adult only home where she can be the only kitty. Page 9

Otis:
My name is Otis and I am a big, beautiful nine year-old boy. I am a gentle giant who just loves being near my humans, going for walks, fetching tennis balls and hanging out with my foster sister. I think I would do best in a family with older children and I am okay with cats and definitely other dogs. I have a little problem with my hips but with a little help and some carpeting, I manage really well. Once on my feet, I am ready to rock and roll. I am ready to go home.
was taken from a hoarder’s home earlier this year along with 14 other dogs. As a result of the unbelievable conditions she was exposed to we have had to spend the past few months getting Aimee used to being comfortable around other dogs. Aimee has responded very well – so well that she can go to any type of family as long as she is properly introduced. She loves to play and be active. She is trying to make up for all she has missed in her life. Could it be with you?
Zaxby
is a big sweet six year-old boy who is looking for his third forever home through no fault of his own. He is an absolutely perfect beautiful golden retriever. Zaxby has no known health issues, but at 100 pounds, he does need to lose some weight. He is an easy going big teddy bear who really wants a true “forever” home. He loves being around his foster family, lets you know when he wants attention, and happily wanders around the fenced yard with his foster brother. Page 10

Princess
is a very sweet, petite approximately 18-month-old golden mix. She came into the program malnourished, weighing in at only 35 lbs. She is timid but very loving. She walks well with a harness lead. She might be petite but she needs that extra harness support when walking because she loves to run after bunnies and squirrels. She is learning to trust her people and about living the good life with her foster family. This sweet, gentle, well behaved girl needs a forever home.

China Doll:
My coat is something to see, a mixture of lovely traditional markings. I’m a tortitabby that could have stepped out of an impressionist painting. The dilute mackerel swirls along my sides are muted and soft. I also have a great personality to share. I love to explore and relish my time outside the cage making the rounds and saying “hi” to felines and humans alike. Come meet me soon and I’ll show you!
Curious and cute. I am an excellent little tabby – social, sweet and loving. But I’m also smart. I like to get to know you a little bit before I shine the full light of my personality on you. I’m the kind of cat who gets along well with others, human and feline, and would be a special companion.

Mozelle:
Terrific torti. I’m a super sweet, social kitten with unusual deep, dark torti markings. Give me just a few minutes and I bet I’ll win your heart. I have a very good friend here at SAFE Haven. Her name is Sweetie Pie and she, too, is very special. If you would consider two new friends, please keep her in mind. We’re ready for our new home as soon as you are!
Thaddeus:
Regal feline. When I sit up straight and proud, my tail wrapped around me like a royal robe, I look like a creature that could have been part of a portrait from medieval days. I’m very outgoing and loving and would be a fabulous addition to your castle. Come meet me today!
Storm survivor. I’m a very lucky cat. I showed up in Wilson after the storms with my kitten in tow and we were rescued from the damage. My kitten already has a home; now I’m ready for mine! I’m kind and gentle and would be so thankful for a secure, loving home. I bet that you just might be the one to provide it.
Goldenflower :
Personality plus. I love people. Can’t wait to meet new ones and find the one I’ll be going home with soon. I’m a sweet orange tabby gal who’s having a great time playing and lounging around here with my siblings but we’re now ready to start our life journey in the place we’re meant to be. I would love to be adopted with a playmate.

is a lovely two-three-yearold Lab mix. She’s friendly, pleased with everything, and loves everyone she meets. When she’s glad to see you, which is always, she will give you a whole-body wiggle. She is very playful, loves her toys, and is excellent with other dogs. She would be a wonderful second dog and/or dog park dog. Winnie was very thin when she first arrived at the shelter, and had lost quite a lot of her hair but we’re happy to report that her hair has all grown back now and her coat is shiny and healthy.

He’s a little sensitive, and will respond well to kind handling and positive training. He seems to like other dogs, and would be best placed with a low-key female. She’s about three years old and though she’s a little anxious and submissive, she’s very smart, food-motivated and eager to learn, so she should be a wonderful dog to take to obedience class. Cosmo & Donovan are
adorable twin brothers, five-month-old Lab/shep mixes (Donovan is the puppy pictured). Beauty Through the by Willie Hodge AVE YOU EVER walked down the street and felt like someone was staring at you because you looked different than everyone else? Did it make you feel uncomfortable? I understand this and want you to walk away today believing that being different makes an individual both unique and beautiful. I believe that everyone should embrace their differnces and eloquently demonstrate to others how courage and perseverance can help you triumph. If you have never read an article written by a cat before, then today is truly your lucky day. My name is Willie Hodge. And yes, I am a cat, but not just any cat. I have work hard to become a representative for pets who suffer from medical ailments that classify them as requiring special needs, just like myself. I am here today to capture your heart with this inspiring story demonstrating the bond between a feline and his human. My story began four years ago when I was found as a baby in a dumpster by a teenager. I was cold, hungry, and very sick at the time. It is hard to recollect how I got there, as my memory at that age was not clear, however, I do remember feeling I was blessed for being saved that day and I knew my life was changed forever. I was brought to the Cat Clinic of Cary and met the woman who would become my mom. At first, I got the feeling that I was different from the other kittens that the Cat Clinic had saved. I wasn’t quite sure what it was about me that resulted in my being different. Maybe it was the fact that I had to have a surgery to remove one of my eyes? I remember being very scared when this happened, but had to believe that the people helping me truly had my best interests at heart. As time went on, I was confined to a cage and became concerned that I would never find a forever loving home because I looked different than

all the other felines around me. Don’t get me wrong, even without the eye, I was considered quite dapper by the human population; however, other medical ailments I was suffering from made it difficult for an average family to adopt me. Then, one day, to my surprise, I was put in a travel carrier and taken to what was to become my new family. Little did I know my new mom was the same veterinarian who had put me back on my feet, and that she had a house full of other special needs pets that would become my siblings. T TOOK SOME TIME for me to adapt to my new surroundings. I was surrounded by many other cats, and even dogs. I have to be honest, I am not a big fan of dogs. I tried to make my feelings apparent to my mom by hissing at them at every opportunity I was given. I was a little disappointed to learn that no matter what I did, the dogs were a permanent part of my new family. Eventually, I decided to focus my energy elsewhere and just pretended like they didn’t exist. Due to my medical issues, I am not able to stay home alone for long periods of time. My mom realized this and began taking me to the clinic with her every day. At first, I was concerned about this, as I was trying to be like my feline brothers and sisters. However, as time went on, I realized how exciting it was to ride in the car everyday and spend time with my mom in my, oops, I mean her office. One of the biggest highlights of my day is when people stop by the clinic just to meet and visit with me! Since I adapted so well to traveling, my mom decided to take me to the pet store. This was such a treat! I really enjoyed riding in the cart and watching the birds fly and the fish swim. To my surprise, the next thing I noticed was that I was wearing this cute little t-shirt my mom bought for me. I should have protested at the time, as I have since learned that cats are not supposed to wear clothes.
I
Eye of a Beholder However, the color of the t-shirt really brought out the color of my eye and I lost all track of reasonable thought. As a result, I am now the proud owner of a human sized dresser full of outfits that I wear on a regular basis. My mom now takes me boating, camping, shopping, and traveling all over. Most recently I went to visit the Outer Banks and Hilton Head Island. I am a big fan of the beach as it resembles a huge litter box. One of my favorite past times is sharing information with children about proper care for their pets. I am a regular guest at Camp MusArt, a track-out camp for children in Apex. I enjoy sharing tips about at-home pet care as well as appropriate veterinary care. I think the children have really learned to love our time together. At the end of each session the children draw pictures of me to take home to their parents. One of my recent favorite experiences at Camp MusArt was when the children made feather toys for me to play with. I have to admit, I kind of lost sight of my mission that day and spent more time playing than teaching. Since joining the Camp MusArt team, I have been invited to many schools in the area and have been asked to host birthday parties for some of the children. I am so happy to be able to make so many children happy. I am a very big advocate of supporting our local feline rescue groups. I was recently been a guest of honor at SAFE Haven for Cats Tuxedo Ball. This was a fabulous fund raising event that allowed me a night out on the town in my brand new tuxedo and bow tie. I do believe I was a hit! I recently made an appearance at the grand opening of the Cat Angel’s Thrift Shop located next door to the Cat Clinic. The proceeds from sales at the thrift shop support Cat Angel’s feline rescue organization. I had such a welcoming at this event that I make it a point to stop in and visit regularly. I am also a big supporter
of Palisades Rescue and hope to make an appearance at one of their fund raising events soon. CERTAINLY HAVE had a lot of adventure in my life. Just a few years ago I was walking across my mom’s laptop and came across this thing called Facebook. I became quite intrigued and when no one was looking, I figured out how to set up my own Facebook page. At first I thought it was just fun but soon I was posting interesting cat and veterinary facts, information on my feline and canine siblings, stories of my mom’s interesting cases from the Cat Clinic, as well as pictures and videos of my daily activities. Before long I had over 4,000 fans. I enjoy all the interaction with all of my friends. If you are not currently one of my friends on Facebook, I would love for you to find me and become a friend. Looking back on my life, there are many times where I felt I was truly blessed. Not one time stands out more than the day I met my mom. I am so grateful for the chance she took on me despite my special needs to provide me with such a wonderful quality of life. She was able to look beyond my physical abnormalities and cherish my attributes. At the time, I had no idea of the journey we were going to take together. Don’t get me wrong, my journey has not always been easy. There have been a couple of incidents where I was terrified that my medical issues would get the better of me. What I have learned over the years is that through optimism and charm I am able to overcome my physical abnormalities and enlighten others with my story. I am humbled by what I believe to be my amazing ability to bring a smile to the face of the most hesitant of individuals. It is very likely after reading this article you will have the pleasure of bumping into me out there in the real world. If this happens, I hope you take a minute to stop and say hello. When you do, don’t look at me as
I
having special needs, look at me as being extra special! I may even give you a purr and a headbutt! And oh yeah, look for me on Facebook. I’m Willie Hodge.

Her name means little loved one and Aiko is discovering for the first time what being loved is all about - and she highly approves! This little girl was found trying to climb out of a dumpster in the rain in western North Carolina and made the long trip to Cat Angels. This is made even more poignant by the fact that Aiko has macular degeneration; when she came to us she had only two-three percent of her sight. That is slowly waning, and soon she will be completely blind. But she is a sweet little girl with a loud purr.
I was living under a deck in Raleigh with my family: mama Andie and my siblings Aiden, Adrian and April. A nice lady rescued us and brought us to Cat Angels where we found plenty of food, friends and nice people. At Cat Angels there are many toys, which is great because I love to play. Sometimes I’ll stop to watch everyone else, as I’m quite the student of everything around me. I am bit shier than my sister, but that’s just because I like to make sure before jumping in. is a pretty brown marble tabby, just shy of a year old. Overall, she’s very round – round face, round body, round markings. Diva does great with small children – but really, she gets along with all people and cats. Sometimes she’ll wake up her foster mom in the morning looking for attention. She’s curious, which can get her into trouble: Once her foster mom temporarily closed Diva in a cabinet because she didn’t know Detective Diva was investigating! But sweet Diva didn’t mind, and she’s still an explorer.
Bob
is striking brown marble tabby about four years old. He’s a super sweet kitty who’s also super smart—he comes right to you when you call his name! Bob also loves climbing and can often be found on the top of his foster mom’s cabinets. OR MANY, SUMMER MEANS hanging out at the pool and firing up the grill. But while barbequed foods are delicious for humans, they can be dangerous to your canine. Below are a few of the foods that may show up at your barbeque that could prove to be debilitating to your pooch. Onions, garlic, chives, hot-peppers and jalapenos are great additions to your burgers or dips and appetizers, but can prove to be unhealthy to your pooch. Onions and garlic in all forms (raw, cooked, powdered or dehydrated) can break down a dog’s red blood cells. This breakdown can lead to anemia in dogs. Symptoms of anemia in dogs include weakness, vomiting, breathlessness and by Susan loss of interest in food. Graff Grapes and raisins, which may be found in salads and desserts, can cause kidney failure in dogs. An early symptom of kidney failure is vomiting and within a day or two the dog might appear lethargic and depressed. Guacamole, a favorite dip, made from avocados, can also make dogs ill. Avocados contain persin. Although persin is safe for humans (who are not allergic to it), it is not so safe for dogs and large amounts of persin can even be toxic to them. Persin can be found in the avocados’ leaves, seeds and fruit, as well as its bark. So make sure it doesn’t end up in your best friend’s bark! So although barbeques and parties are fun ways to celebrate during the summer season, don’t be tempted to feed Fido your leftovers. Instead, why not bake your pooch and his/her friends some dog friendly treats? Some of my clients as well as my own dogs love the barbeque taste of Bark A Que Treats.

They were able to remove his right eye and save him from being put to sleep. Jack LOVES other dogs of all sizes and will be ready for his forever home soon!
Minnie
is a pug mix weighing 21 lbs. Minnie was dumped at the shelter by her owners after seven years of loyal service. Minnie was very sad there and we couldn’t leave her behind. She has had surgery to repair her cherry eye and is recovering nicely. Minnie needs to go to a dog experienced home that can help her be happy again. She is leash trained, dog door trained, gets along with cats and is fine with other dogs after she warms up to them.
Kora or Kora Jean is an Australian cattle dog. She is about a year old. She is house trained and graduated at the top of her obedience class. She is fast, fast , fast and would be an excellent running companion or agility/fly ball prospect. She gets along well with other dogs and wiggles her whole back end when she is happy. She would do best in a home with a woman and/or another dog to play with. Don’t miss out on this awesome girl.

Hooch
is very happy Australian cattle dog. He was dumped in a high kill shelter in Georgia where two dog trainers saw his potential and insisted that someone get him to a rescue. He loves everything and everybody. He is house trained and knows the “sit” command so well that he obeys the three year old in his foster home. He has lots of energy and would make a great running companion or an agility dog. He loves to roll over at your feet for belly rubs. Don’t miss out on this cute boy!

guy who loves the excitement of his ‘new’ life in rescue: meeting people, playing games, eating good food, and just plain running around. His ideal situation would be in a home with no other pets, a fenced-in backyard to run around in during the day, and a nice bed indoors to sleep in at night. His new family would walk and/or jog him frequently. This boy loves exercise and excitement! He will respond with undying devotion.
beauty with very expressive eyes. She is shy with strangers, but to us she is pure PURR! It seems her hard early life taught her to relish the happy moments in life. And does she ever relish life! She loves to toss and bunny-kick her puffy ball, she stretches luxuriously when brushed, and she eats with gusto. She’s not around kids, dogs, or other cats, and we think she’d rather not bother. She is undemanding, but she really wants a loving home.
India
Minnetonka
is a two-four year old calico who loves a full body kitty massage and a good conversation, especially if it’s about how pretty she is. She’s independent and can entertain herself, but is pleased if you want to play, too. India is heartworm positive, but shows no symptoms. There are no approved methods to treat heartworm in cats, but the disease can be monitored with radiographs while waiting out the worms’ lifespan (two-three years). India tolerates other cats or would be fine as an only cat.
Smokey is a beautiful green-
eyed older girl who is back in IAR care because of allergies in a new family member. Smokey has a big personality, greeting you at the door and following you around, supervising everything you do from cooking to computer tasks. She loves to sit in your lap and be petted, until she twitches her tail to let you know that it’s time to let her take her nap. Smokey would probably prefer a home without children.
is a sassy girl! She has beautiful green eyes lined in black, and adorably fluffy black and white fur. She is still not sure about being picked up, but loves to roll all over the ground in front of you in order to get attention. She has the sweetest little meow to tell you that she would like some petting, which she wants often. She also loves to bound like a bunny when chasing the laser pointer, and wrestle with her brother Rory, from whom she is inseparable.
Rory
is very curious and friendly, and bonds quickly to “his people.” He loves to be brushed, and will roll on his back during a grooming session to let you reach every inch of him. He also loves looking out windows to watch the world go by, and would appreciate a home with lots of windows and a good view! Rory has a heart condition called HCM. He is currently asymptomatic, but will need to be monitored. He would love a calm home with his sister Minnetonka!

Sylvester :
Maisy:
If you like big, snuggly cats that want nothing more than to lounge and be adored, look no further. Sylvester is a five-year-old black & white boy who is as gentle & laid back as they come. This handsome lad knows what he wants – and that’s a leisurely life of belly rubs and cat naps! That’s right, he actually loves to have his belly rubbed. And as soon as you approach, he stretches out and rolls over for you to do just that! This hilariously charming boy will make quite a catch for a very lucky family.
This sweet shepherd mix is around a year old and looking to gain some confidence in the world! Maisy is a definite people pleaser and tries hard to figure out anything she can to make you happy. She is extremely submissive and will do well in a home where she can take her time warming up to things and learn to build trust. She does well with other dogs and may be a great companion to a canine buddy who could help her come out of her shell! Either way, she will be a dedicated and loyal pal to a lucky new owner!
Queenie :
Buster :
This adorable brown tabby girl is around two years old and super sweet! She has a quiet, calm disposition that is charming and soothing. And she loves people! She doesn’t beg for attention, but once it’s given to her, it becomes clear that this girl is a snuggler! She will roll over, purr at you and crawl in your lap for as long as you’ll let her! She came to the shelter with another cat and would probably enjoy having a feline buddy in her adoptive home to lounge with when a nice cozy lap isn’t available!
When you work with new animals daily, it is rare to be completely wrong about a dog’s personality, but Buster will remind even the most seasoned animal person that everyone is an individual. Approaching Buster’s room, you see what appears to be an intense dog with unruly energy and probable rude manners. You assume you’ll be jumped on and clawed, but when Buster rushes to you, it’s not to jump, but to sit in front of you and calmly offer you his paw.
Tara :
This gorgeous golden orange kitty is around a year old and looking for a new place to call home. Tara is a quiet, mellow girl who enjoys the company of people, but would rather wait for you to come to her. She came to the shelter with another kitty and seems to enjoy sharing her time with a buddy. She likes to lounge and would make an excellent sidekick for a more outgoing kitty, since she not only loves the companionship of a feline friend, but also doesn’t compete for attention when a visitor approaches.

Blaze:
Some people are drawn to the looks of a dog, while others go for personality. Blaze will give you the best of both. This two-year-old husky mix is strikingly handsome with perfect tuxedo-like coloring and baby blue eyes. The stark contrast between his rich black coat and pale blue eyes stands out, but it is his goofy personality will keep you around. This funny guy is a happy mix of shy and outgoing, pawing happily in the air while he sinks against the wall onto his back, ready for a belly rub or some good cuddle time!
With Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws This Carrboro non-profit makes a big difference submitted by Maria Ikenberry and Deb Cunningham
A
N ASSISTANCE DOG is a specially trained dog that is matched with someone with a disability. We all know that dogs provide wonderful companionship and lots of opportunities for socializing and exercise, but assistance dogs give their partners this and a lot more. Assistance dogs help people who have a wide range of disabilities by helping them with tasks they can’t perform for themselves. This help makes a significant difference and allows lives to be lived more independently. Owners of assistance dogs connect more readily with the community; become healthier and feel more confident. Not all dogs make good assistance dogs. Assistance dogs need to be very people-oriented and most loyal to their human partners by constantly paying attention to them first and foremost. They also need to be calm and steady both in and out of the house. It takes a lot of work finding the right dog. Eyes Ears Nose and Paws (EENP), a Carrboro nonprofit that trains and places assistance dogs, partners with animal shelters and rescue organizations to find pups for its assistance dog programs. JJ is the newest assistance pup-in-training at EENP. A special combination of confidence and friendliness makes JJ irresistible to those who meet her and these traits make her an excellent choice for assistance dog training. Many people ask about JJ’s breed. She seems to have a bit of wheaten terrier in her but she is 100 percent shelter dog from the Orange County Animal Shelter. Assistance dogs go through lengthy training to develop their skills, but just as importantly, to make sure they are unobtrusive helpmates in a wide variety of public settings. State and federal laws allow assistance dogs to go into public places where dogs are not usually allowed, because they are so crucial to their human partners’ safety and health. Small dogs like JJ are trained to be diabetic assistance dogs who are partnered with people who have difficult-to-control diabetes. JJ is trained to detect when blood sugar is out of normal range. She alerts by nudging a knee or shoulder EENP client Randy McGarity with diabetic assistance dog Ansel
persistently and will bring a kit with a blood glucose meter. If the person doesn’t respond, she is trained to go find another person for help and to activate a special K9 rescue phone that dials a pre-programmed number. For Erica and Rebecca Mustard, a pup like JJ could be a life-saver. Rebecca is 11 and has diabetes. She has recently had a growth spurt and can be so busy being a kid that she doesn’t always recognize the signs that her blood sugar has gone high or low. Rebecca’s mom, Erica, has to be vigilante and watch her daughter closely. Every night, Erica gets up several times to check Rebecca’s blood sugar which could dip dangerously low and send her into a diabetic coma. This is where a diabetic assistance dog can alleviate a great deal of stress for a family and help everyone get a good night’s rest. The dogs help keep their partners’ blood sugar levels stable so they are at lower risk for both short and long-term health complications. To get ready for his role as a diabetic assistance dog, JJ is being raised by special volunteers called puppy parents. Erin Edwards is a puppy parent with her husband, Jonathan Waugh. Erin finished her law degree at UNC this May, and her EENP pup-in-training was with her every step of the way. Her pup grew up navigating the halls of the

law school and curling up for naps during classes. Erin started as a puppy parent with no prior experience in dog training. She took EENP’s weekend puppy parent seminar before getting her pup, and receives weekly training from the organization’s training staff during group field trips with other program participants.
E
ENP ALSO HAS A SERVICE DOG program that partners pups with people who have mobility impairments. Kayley Thorpe is a 16-year-old with Tourette syndrome, a medical condition that causes her arms and legs to move erratically. Kayley uses a cane to steady herself, but often falls. At times, she needs to use a wheelchair to get around. In August, Kaylee hopes to be paired with a Service Dog who will steady her as she climbs stairs, help her up when she falls, and pick up things she drops. Bonnie, a German shepherd mix from the Durham County APS, has all the skills Kayley needs and more. In addition to bracing and retrieving, Bonnie can turn on light switches, open and shut doors, push elevator buttons with her nose, tug off socks and unzip a backpack to retrieve something inside. She has also mastered the skills needed to be a Diabetic Assistance Dog. Bonnie knows over fifty commands but, continued ... see EENP on page 26

E CALLED HER “Eviction Sims.” She was a pretty little dog sitting in quarantine under protective custody at the Wake County Animal Center shelter after her owners were evicted and abandoned her. She was paralyzed in her back end and couldn’t stay in the shelter because the floors were textured, and she would rub herself raw on when she scooted on the floors.

I was transferred from Chatham County shelter in late March. Someone had abandoned me so I may be a little shy or fearful at first but the humans here at p4e have shown me no one is going to abandon me any more. I only weigh 25 pounds and I am full grown at a year and a half. I am trying really hard on my house training but still do not know what a leash is. I may seem a little timid in my kennel so please carry me to the play yard and I will open up for you.

I am a large cat at 17 pounds and have a purring motor to rev up any time I can get some affection. If you are a gentle human I will even let you rub on my belly. continued from page 23
more importantly, she loves to learn and has an insatiable desire to please her human partner. But while Bonnie is an overachiever as a helpmate, she is not comfortable in public settings. Life as an assistance dog would be very stressful for Bonnie. Both service and diabetic assistance dogs accompany their partners throughout their busy days. In Kayley’s case, her service dog will need to go with her to school, to the mall, to movies, and everywhere else teenagers go. When Bonnie heads out to public places, she becomes distracted, unable to focus on what her partner needs. When she sees a dog she doesn’t know, she becomes worried and may bark and strain on her leash. EENP strives to place each of their dogs in a situation where they will thrive and Bonnie found her match as a pet dog with Gretchen
Page 26
and Art Aylsworth. The Alysworths are long-time dog lovers and Bonnie was an instant success as a member of their family. Gretchen has a mild disability as a result of a recent back surgery, which gives Bonnie an opportunity to put her skills to work at home. She helps Gretchen up from kneeling and sitting positions as well as retrieving
things that have rolled under a table or other hard-to-reach places. While Bonnie wasn’t able to become an assistance dog, she’s found just the right place for her unique qualities. Kayley will find her match when she visits EENP’s training facility in August for intensive twoweek team training where she will be matched with a service dog. Mack, Duncan, and Stella are purebred golden retrievers finishing their service dog training, and will be trying out for the position as Kayley’s service dog. Local breeders are also a source for pups to add to the EENP programs. During the first week of team

training the EENP staff will look for the dog who shares a special spark with Kaylee. Team training culminates in a graduation ceremony that is open to the public. EENP provides its services to people in central North Carolina. Volunteers can help by becoming a puppy parent. It takes up to two years to train an assistance dog, and EENP dogs live in a home setting with their puppy parents during this time. With a national average wait time of two to four years for service dogs, every new volunteer puppy parent helps EENP get more assistance dogs started in training. EENP is the only nonprofit assistance dog organization in the Triangle area and the only organization placing diabetic assistance dogs in the southeast. Maria Ikenberry is the executive director of EENP and Deb Cunningham is EENP’s founder.

A Home of Special Pets OF THE MILLIONS OF PETS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION EACH YEAR, thousands are categorized as pets requiring special needs. Special needs can encompass various disabilities, including both congenital and acquired conditions or a combination of both. Animals with disabilities tend to be very adaptive despite these problems, and most find ways to function to the best of their abilities. Caring for pets with special needs does not necessarily have to be a burden on the adoptive family, but these pets require an environment ready to meet their needs in order to provide appropriate and beneficial care. The adoption of a pet with special needs is not for every family. Depending on the severity of the disability, there are many things that families should consider before adopting a pet with special needs. Some special needs pets require care that can only be given by family members who are home a significant amount of time. Others may require medications and/or special diets that may be expensive. Some may require the use of slings, ramps, or wheelchairs in order to get around, in which case homes with staircases could cause a problem. It is also very difficult to find others who are willing to care for special needs pets thereby making frequent travel for adoptive families often challenging. I have a soft place for pets with special needs and being a veterinarian, the assistance I am able to provide is unique. Let’s take a look at some of my pets. CONGENITAL DISORDERS CONSIST OF MEDICAL CONDITIONS that are present at birth as a result of either hereditary or environmental influences. WILLIE the cat and JACKSON the pug both have congenital disorJackson ders. Willie was born without his upper eyelids and he had an abnormality with one of his eyes, which eventually had to be removed. Willie also has an abnormal spine, which adversely affects the nerves connecting to Clefton his bladder and colon resulting in elimination problems. Jackson was born without elbow joints and was turned over to a Pug rescue organization. Surgical correction of his probWillie lem was not possible. Page 28

CLEFTON, a recently rescued cat with an unknown past, is missing a portion of her nose and both upper lips either due to a congenital disorder called a cleft palate or from a traumatic injury. Fortunately, Willie, Jackson, and Clefton have adapted well to their disabilities and manage to live fairly normal lives. CONGENITAL DISORDERS MAY ALSO BE GENETIC OR INHERITED in nature. PADDIE, a shar pei, suffers from a combination of Shar Pei Fever Syndrome and glaucoma, both diseases common in the shar pei breed. As a result, Paddie suffers from random episodes of high fever and gets very ill. She is treated supportively until the episode passes and she Paddie feels better. She has also had to have her right eye surgically removed and replaced with a prosthesis due to her glaucoma. The glaucoma in her left eye has left her completely blind despite the use of topical medications that attempt to control the disease. ACQUIRED MEDICAL CONDITIONS IN PETS vary widely in nature. They can be the result of chronic medical conditions and behavioral issues. KLESKO, a yellow lab is a four time cancer survivor. As a puppy, he had a histiocytoma removed from one of his eyelids. Later in life, he had his left front leg amputated, due Klesko to mast cell cancer, and he completed six months o f c h e m o t h e r a p y. Shortly thereafter, Klesko had his tail amputated due to a hemangiosarcoma. Six months later, he underwent a radical surgery to remove a large hemangiopericytoma from his right chest wall. Klesko is also currently being treated for chronic kidney disease. ACQUIRED MEDICAL CONDITIONS IN ANIMALS CAN BE ACUTE OR CHRONIC, as well as the result of trauma. For example, TIMMIE was rescued as a six week old kitten. He was found with two broken legs, which healed over time. At a young age, Timmie was diagnosed with melanoma, a cancer, in the iris of his eye and had a surgical laser treatment Timmie performed that cured his disease. Timmie has recently been diagnosed with systemic mast cell cancer. He has had multiple surgeries including the removal of his JULY 2011
spleen. He is currently on systemic chemotherapy to prevent recurrence of his cancer. SPECIAL NEEDS PETS OFTEN FIND THEMSELVES IN SITUATIONS where their families can no longer care for them. PERCIE the pug was turned over to a pug rescue organization because of her chronic medical problem. Percie suffered from chronic ulcerative proliferative stomatitis, a rare but severe inflammatory disease that affected her mouth Percie and gums. As a result, Percie was in a significant amount of pain. Percie has since undergone multiple dental procedures which included removal of all her teeth and this has cured her disease. The term special needs also encompasses those pets that are fortunate enough to reach their senior years. Many pet owners forget that the probability of disease increases with the age of the pet. CLYDE, a seventeen year cat, has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, an endocrine disorder which is well regulated with oral medication. Clyde suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a congenital heart disease which is also controlled with daily medication. Clyde was also diagnosed and surgically treated for an acquired spinal tumor that resulted in temporary paralysis of his hind legs when he was younger. It is amazing how well these animals have adapted to their various disabilities in order to live comfortable lives. As a result, I have formed an incredible emotional bond with them. There is also a great sense of achievement being able to provide a healthy and happy environment for them to thrive in. For those who feel adopting a pet with special needs is an appropriate decision for their family, there are many local organizations that may be able to help place the perfect pet in your home. Many local rescue groups frequently foster special needs pets in hopes of finding forever loving homes. My clinic has given ongoing care to a wide range of special needs pets over the years. One of the clinic’s permanent residents, Nikki, suffers from paralysis in his hind legs as a result of being hit by a car. People often visit Nikki and find him inspirational. I welcome anyone considering adopting a special needs pet to visit the Cat Clinic to discuss your concerns before you make a final decision to adopt a special needs pet that you have found.
