Fishing Travelling This is an issue with several articles on cold places, apart from a piece on fishing in the Bahamas- we will talk about the Kola Peninsula, salmon in Norway, Halibut fly fishing in northern Europe and Sweden. The latter, a well-known and proverbially economic destination, is now a land of conquest. Probably soon the government will intervene to "clean up" the market of improvised and unauthorized ‘experts’, as has already happened in other countries, but at the moment we need to be careful. Our advice is always to use professionals who have been doing this job for some time, who have expert guides and all the necessary authorizations and insurances. The list of people who have had problems with missing deposits or journeys paid twice is long, so always asking for a contract from insured tour operators is the best advice you can give. The Best Lodges catalog is promoting the best fishing destinations and H2o magazine France is growing, paper copies are already available.

Questo è un numero con parecchi articoli su posti freddi, a parte un pezzo sulla pesca alle Bahamas, parleremo di Penisola di Kola, di salmoni in Norvegia, di pesca agli Halibut nel nord Europa con la mosca e di Svezia. Quest’ultima, meta molto conosciuta a proverbialmente economica, è ormai terra di conquista.

Probabilmente tra poco interverrà il governo a “ripulire” il mercato da improvvisati e non autorizzati, come è già successo in altri paesi, ma al momento occorre fare attenzione. Il nostro consiglio è sempre quello di servirsi di professionisti che fanno questo mestiere da tempo, che hanno guide esperte e tutte le autorizzazioni e assicurazioni del caso. L’elenco di persone che hanno avuto problemi di acconti spariti o di viaggi pagati due volte è lungo, quindi chiedere sempre il contratto da tour operator assicurati è il miglior consiglio che si può dare. Ad ogni viaggio nella penisola di Kola la trasferta dall’aeroporto di Murmansk alle zone di pesca diventa sempre meno faticosa e di conseguenza più facile. Sono passati i tempi in cui si viaggiava su mezzi improbabili per raggiungere, non si sa quando, la propria destinazione. Ormai anche organizzatori, guide e outfitter russi si sono civilizzati, e così anche i mezzi di trasporto,

un po’ a discapito del loro fascino. Molti ricordi sono infatti legati a questi mezzi, spesso ex militari, su cui ho viaggiato negli anni passati. Ovviamente sto parlando di viaggi di fascia media, non sto parlando della zona dell’aeroporto di Murmansk dedicata agli elicotteri che trasportano i clienti vip nei fiumi Karlowka, Jokanga, Ponoi... In ogni caso, visto che siamo stati qualche volta

Gone are the times when you traveled on unlikely means and didn’t know when you would reach your destination. By now even Russian organizers, guides and outfitters have become civilized, and so have the means

of transport, somewhat to the detriment of their charm. Many memories are in fact linked to these often ex-military vehicles on which I have traveled in the past years. Obviously I'm talking about mid-range travel. I'm not talking about the Murmansk airport area dedicated to helicopters that transport VIP customers to the Karlowka, Jokanga, Ponoi rivers... In any case,

anche in questi lodge, la nostra opinione possiamo esprimerla.

A parte la qualità della pesca che indubbiamente è differente anche nello stesso lodge a seconda della beat di fiume, della settimana, e anche della guida, ormai la jungla di broker e venditori più o meno professionali richiede di diventare sempre più attenti ed esperti, altrimenti la fregatura è in agguato. Per

fregatura intento una settimana di pesca in un lodge favoloso con ottimo cibo, vodka ed elicotteri puliti come il fiume in cui si andrà a pescare ma senza un salmone nel raggio di chilometri.

Quindi stare svegli è la prima regola. Personalmente do molta importanza al rapporto umano e cerco di lavorare sempre con amici di vecchia data e gente seria. Questi anni di Covid hanno ulteriormente portato a selezionare le persone con cui lavorare

troverete altri pescatori e tutto il fiume è a disposizione dei 6 ospiti a settimana della casa di Vasil. Personalmente mi diventa sempre più difficile ogni anno che passa pescare in tratti di fiumi dove la beat è lunga come un campo da calcio e le pool come la vasca da bagno. Credo che la pesca sia espressione di libertà e costringerci a praticarla in piccoli tratti sia la fine di questo splendido sport.

In this long stream of over 30 kilometers, you will

hardly find other fishermen and the whole river is available to the 6 guests per week from Vasil's house. Personally, as years go by,I find it more and more difficult to fish in stretches of rivers where the beat is as long as a football field and the pools like a bathtub. I believe that fishing is an expression of freedom and forcing ourselves to practice it in small sections is the end of this splendid sport.

Among them is fly fishing journalist and photographer, Rasmus Ovesen, who has travelled to Northern Norway in the hopes of hooking up with “the Queen of the Sea”.

Some fishing plans are more stupid than others - on paper at least. To fly fish for halibut, clearly, is one of the most dubious ones; because how on earth are you going to catch a fish that has perfected, through millions of years, the art of ambush-attacking prey along the ocean floor – in the abysmal depths of powerful tidal currents and along craggy drop-offs out to sea?

I have hatched many terrible and half-witted fishing plans throughout my life. Most of them have never been realized. Those that have, on the other hand, have mostly ended up as thundering

In the past I’ve heard of people attempting to fly fish for halibut; with oversized equipment, express-sink fly lines and heavily weighted flies – and with minimal success. But, if halibut happen to show up in shallow areas close to shore at certain times of the year, it must be possible to effectively target them with a fly rod!

In between my sporadic catches of seatrout, my thoughts wander, and I see these imaginary halibut rise from the sandy bottom and abruptly inhale my fly. The images are still etched upon my mind as I return from my journey – and it doesn’t take long before I start

failures. Very few have been even moderately successful, but I remember them with the greatest enthusiasm and joy. For what is more legendary than achieving (some form of) success despite all odds?

An idea is born In June 2021 I’m fly fishing for seatrout in a handful of different fjords in Northern Norway. During my time there I’m made aware of random catches of smaller halibut from relatively shallow areas and big specimens longline-fished from shore.

A few weeks later, by the end of August, I find myself onboard a small airplane east of Tromsø. Immediately below me, a mighty snow-clad mountain range reaches upwards and at its foot, a glistening azure blue fjord reflects the cloudless sky as if it was a big, vibrant mirror. It seems as if, for once, the weather gods have finally sided with me, and – not surprisingly – it’s a particularly expectant and ecstatic Jonny that greets me at the airport upon arrival.

Pescare a mosca l'halibut, chiaramente, è uno di questi; perché, come pensi di catturare un pesce che ha perfezionato nel corso di milioni di anni l'arte di attaccare le prede lungo il fondo dell'oceano, nelle profondità abissali di potenti correnti e lungo scoscesi dirupi?

Nel corso della mia vita ho escogitato molti piani di pesca terribili e poco intelligenti. La maggior parte di essi non sono mai stati realizzati. Quelli che sono stati messi in pratica, d'altra

relativamente poco profonde e di grandi esemplari pescati dalla riva.

In passato avevo già sentito racconti di pescatori che hanno tentato di pescare a mosca l'halibut con attrezzature sovradimensionate, code ad affondamento rapido e mosche molto piombate – con poco successo. Poi ho pensato: ma se l'halibut si presenta in zone poco profonde vicino alla costa in determinati periodi dell'anno, deve essere possibile puntarlo efficacemente con una canna da mosca!

”Welcome! It looks like you brought the good weather”, he says, in his charming British accent. ”I brought much more than that”, I respond with a twinkle in the eye, but regret it immediately. Oftentimes, I’ve been able to explain away and trivialize my lack of success on previous expeditions with reference to unfortunate weather conditions. This time, however, it seems everything is up to me and my capabilities as a fly fisherman.

The next three days will show who emerges as the winner: Me or the Queen of the Sea? Finally on the water Later that day, I’m on the water with Jonny, a guy that proves to be a knowledgeable, experienced and pleasant boat partner. (The latter is never given in advance – and it can be a great source of concern and anxiety ahead of a multipleday trip). Also in the boat is Jonny’s sweet girlfriend Stina, who is as mad about fishing as she is about hunting.

After a short boat ride we’re now sedately drifting a tidal channel and casting flies along a depth curve close to shore where abraded rocks, bladderwracks and sea lace are relieved by pure sand that gradually fades into the shimmering and mysterious depths.

Even with the 12-weight, casting my prototype halibut fly is an arduous task. It reminds me more

"Benvenuto! Sembra che tu abbia portato il bel tempo”, dice nel suo affascinante accento britannico. “Ho portato molto di più”, rispondo con un luccichio negli occhi, ma me ne pento

un compagno di barca esperto, preparato e piacevole (il compagno di barca non viene mai assegnato in anticipo e può essere una grande fonte di preoccupazione e ansia prima di un viaggio di più giorni). Nella barca c'è anche la dolce fidanzata di Jonny, Stina, che va pazza tanto per la pesca quanto per la caccia.

Dopo un breve giro in barca andiamo tranquillamente alla deriva lungo un canale di marea, lanciando mosche lungo una curva

subito. Spesso sono stato in grado di spiegare e banalizzare la mia mancanza di successo nelle precedenti spedizioni con riferimento a condizioni meteorologiche sfortunate. Questa volta, però, sembra che tutto dipenda da me e dalle mie capacità di pescatore. I prossimi tre giorni dimostreranno chi emergerà come vincitore: io o la Regina del Mare?

Finalmente sull’acqua Più tardi sono in acqua con Jonny, un ragazzo che si dimostra

profonda vicino alla riva, dove rocce abrase, quercia marina e merletti marini sono offuscati da sabbia che sfuma gradualmente nelle profondità luccicanti e misteriose.

Anche con una coda 12, lanciare il mio prototipo di mosca da halibut è un compito arduo. Mi ricorda più una parrucca che una mosca, e la considerevole Wiggle Tail che ho montato al volo insieme a un insidioso amo fa sì che la mosca produca un sibilo grossolano quando viene lanciata attraverso le masse d'acqua

of a party wig than of a fly, and the sizeable Wiggle Tail that I’ve mounted on the fly along with a treacherous stinger hook makes the fly produce a coarse hissing sound when cast across the fjord’s twinkling water masses – not unlike the sound a flag makes when pointed out the window of a speeding car.

Back to the starting point Another few hours later we’re back at our starting point. We’ve returned to the tidal channel, and the water is now dropping. We cast like maniacs into 3 – 4 meters of water, but nothing happens

5 minutes later, after several lightning-quick runs, we bring the halibut to the boat. It’s neither 30, 40 or 50 kilos, which I would probably have sworn if it had somehow disappeared forever into the depths. It’s probably more in the vicinity of 10 kilos, but what formidable, muscular, and explosive 10 kilos!!!

A few snap shots later, we release the fish. It obviously doesn’t count as a fly-caught fish, but it provides me with a sorely needed

– and soon the day is over. The sun is already dropping behind the craggy mountains to the west under a vaguely flaring violetblue sky.

Then another bloody cod hits my fly. Frustrated, I haul it in as fast as I can. As it appears in the water below me, and I prepare to unhook it, chills suddenly run down my spine. Below the cod, a massive brown shadow manifests itself and the cod disappears into the jaws of its ghostly prowler. The water explodes and my fly rod bends to the cork while lengths of line disappear into the

Lightning from a clear sky During our second day we catch several smaller halibut between 3 and 6 kilos in shallow bays and near estuaries and islands. Most of them hit the flies in the surface, right along the boat side, after having followed the flies, as if hypnotized over a long distance. It’s incredibly visual and exciting, and I am now in a state of euphoria

Quando appare nell'acqua sotto di me, e io mi preparo a sganciarlo, i brividi mi scorrono improvvisamente lungo la schiena. Sotto il merluzzo, c’è un'enorme ombra marrone e il merluzzo scompare tra le fauci del suo predatore fantasma.

L'acqua esplode e la mia canna si piega fino al sughero mentre i tratti di coda scompaiono nelle profondità.

Later, in the evening, we’re back at the familiar tidal channel, drifting outwards with the falling tide, and casting our flies into 3 – 5 meters of water. Then, at one point, Jonny’s fly rod arcs and I turn around to see what’s going on. “Cod”, he growls laconically in response to the cod’s lazy headshakes, and – as if it were some sort of command, I turn around to make another cast. In that very instant the water explodes beneath me and the fly line is almost

An enormous crater-like whirl crashes against the boat and through its veil I see a big shadow rapidly disappearing into the depths. All slack line comes tight and suddenly the tormented snarl of the fly reel fills the air.

An audience with the queen An exhausting fight ensues.Time and again, we’re close to landing the powerful fish but every time it somehow evades the tail gaff,

flaps its tail and heads irresistibly into the depths. One time it heads right under the boat resulting in an unnaturally concave angle in my fly rod. A sharp riffle-like “boom” rips the air, and – to my great horror - the fish is now taught directly to the fly reel. My fly rod has broken in two right above the handle.

During the rest of the fight I feel more like a local longline fisherman than a fly fishing globetrotter. I’m bursting at the seams with nerves a few minutes later as I pull the fish to the surface one last time. This time, it’s make or break!

Un fulmine a ciel sereno Durante il nostro secondo giorno catturiamo diversi halibut più piccoli tra i 3 e i 6 chili in baie poco profonde e vicino a estuari e isole. La maggior parte di loro colpisce le mosche in superficie, proprio lungo il bordo della barca, dopo aver seguito le mosche, come ipnotizzati a lunga distanza. Fa un effetto visivo incredibilmente eccitante, ed io sono in uno stato di euforia e di sollievo.

La mia missione è compiuta, ma il momento clou deve ancora venire. Più tardi, la sera, torniamo al familiare canale di marea, alla deriva verso l'esterno con la marea che scende, e gettiamo le nostre mosche in 3-5 metri d'acqua. Poi, a un certo punto, la canna da mosca di Jonny si inarca e io mi giro per vedere cosa sta succedendo. “Merluzzo”, ringhia laconico in risposta ai pigri tremori della testa del merluzzo, e io, come se fosse una sorta di comando, mi giro per fare un altro lancio. In quello stesso istante l'acqua esplode sotto di me e la coda mi viene quasi strappata di mano.

La mia ritrovata convinzione ora sembra plasmare la realtà e, all'improvviso, vediamo sinistre creature delle dimensioni di un tavolo apparire e scomparire casualmente come fantasmi sotto la barca. Vediamo persino un halibut gigante frantumare un pesce carbone di grandi dimensioni in mille pezzi sulla superficie, usando come una mazza mortale la sua coda marrone dalle dimensioni di una pala da neve (Improvvisamente, le speculazioni di Jonny secondo cui potrebbe essere possibile catturare l'halibut con i popper sembrano tutt'altro che folli).

Un enorme vortice simile a un cratere si schianta contro la barca e attraverso il suo velo vedo una grande ombra che scompare rapidamente nelle profondità. Tutta la coda si tende e all'improvviso il ringhio tormentato del mulinello riempie l'aria.

Udienza dalla regina Segue una lotta estenuante. Ogni volta che stiamo per prendere quel pesce possente, lui in qualche modo elude l’arpione, sbatte la coda e si dirige verso le profondità. Una volta si dirige

Miraculously - in an eruption of water and sea foam - Jonny manages to tail gaff the fish. And with it firmly secured along the boat, we break out in loud cheers, hugs, and high fives!

We gently tow the fish a short distance to shore, measure it at 134 cm (an estimated 32 kilos) and shoot a couple of quick pictures. The fly is barely clinging on to a leathery flap of skin in the fish’s enormous, craggy mouth, and I can’t help but think that, if I hadn’t looked away when the fish attacked, I might have pulled the fly right out of its mouth from pure startlement and shock.

I hold the fish by its tail, then loosen my grip as the fish starts to show signs of wanting to swim away. In no time at all, the fish has changed its colorations and camouflaged itself against the shallow bottom.

When it kicks off and heads for deeper water, it disappears almost disturbingly fast in the otherwise translucent and gin-clear water, like a fading dream that refuses to be captured.

One thing,however,is unequivocally obvious: My crazy dream has come true. And even though I missed that fateful moment when the Queen of the Sea decided to inhale my fly, I can just close my eyes and vividly imagine what it looked like. I’m a dreamer after all – and a dreamer’s powers of imagination are great!

Miracolosamente - in un'eruzione di acqua e schiuma marina - Jonny riesce a seguire il pesce. E con questo saldamente fissato lungo la barca, scoppiamo in applausi e abbracci e ci diamo il cinque! Rimorchiamo delicatamente il pesce per una breve distanza verso riva, lo misuriamo a 134 cm (circa 32 chili) e scattiamo un paio di foto veloci. La mosca rimane attaccata appena a un lembo di pelle coriacea della bocca enorme del

altrimenti traslucida e limpida, come un sogno sbiadito che rifiuta di essere catturato.

Una cosa comunque è inequivocabilmente ovvia: il mio folle sogno è diventato realtà. E anche se mi manca quel fatidico momento in cui la Regina del Mare ha deciso di inghiottire la mia mosca, se giusto chiudo gli occhi posso immaginare a tinte vivide com’era. Dopotutto sono un sognatore – e la forza dell’immaginazione di un sognatore è grandiosa!

I have been fishing since I was a child, practicing various techniques. Years ago I was hooked by the art of fly fishing, passing from the poetic and harmonious fishing with a dry fly to the nymph technique. Fly-making initially did not appeal to me. I saw it as a limit to my dexterity, but then slowly I began to enter the tunnel among a thousand mistakes. There is always something to learn from everyone, and in recent years I have approached the diabolical fishing with streamers and the construction of these lures. Lately I have met many makers with the same passion and the exchange of information is helping me a lot to understand this wonderful world. I have the privilege of being part of the "fly fishing Brescia" club as a president and, if I am allowed to give advice, I invite everyone, even the most skeptical, to attend a real club and not just social networks.

Pesco fin da ragazzino e ho provato varie tecniche. Anni fa sono stato rapito dall'arte della pesca a mosca, passando dalla poetica e armoniosa pesca con la secca alla tecnica ninfa. La costruzione inizialmente non mi attirava, la vedevo un limite alla mia manualità, poi pian piano tra mille errori ho iniziato ad entrare nel tunnel. C’é sempre da imparare da tutti , e negli ultimi anni mi sono avvicinato alla diabolica pesca a streamer e alla costruzione di questi artificiali. I will start by saying that there are many, and fortunately all are

humble and available, which helps in the growth of each of us.

In Italy there are a lot of excellent makers to learn from. As I particularly love bucktail, I can’t help but mention Bob Popovics. > Favorite places to fish?

In truth, where there is water there is passion. I really like going on a belly boat and small waters are ideal for me. Then I have a love-hate for the Adige river, that gives great satisfaction but also great blows. It teaches you that not everything can be taken for granted. The Chiese, "my" river, is close to home and gives me a new lesson each trip.

Bucktail, flash holo , steve farrar blend e simili, dubbing a fibre molto lunghe (tipo predator dubbing), craft fur.

Premetto che sono tanti e fortunatamente tutti umili e disponibili, cosa che aiuta nella crescita di ognuno di noi. In Italia ci sono tanti bravissimi costruttori da cui trarre insegnamento. Amando in particolar modo il bucktail non posso non citare Bob Popovics. > Luoghi preferiti per pescare?

In verità dove c'è acqua c'è passione, mi piace molto andare in belly boat e le piccole acque per me sono l'ideale. Poi ho un amore-odio per l’ Adige che regala grandi soddisfazioni ma anche grandi batoste, ti insegna che non tutto è scontato; il "mio" fiume è il Chiese, vicino a casa, e ad ogni uscita mi dà una nuova lezione.

Lucky Sweden

Dopo svariati viaggi in Svezia fino alla Lapponia più desolata è facile pensare che la ricchezza di questi fiumi, la proverbiale educazione degli svedesi e la bellezza dei paesaggi siano una grande fortuna per chi vive in queste zone, ma non sempre è cosi. Innanzitutto va detto che da pescatori estivi siamo abituati a vedere questo territorio nei mesi ( pochi a dire la verità) di massimo splendore e luce; ma immaginatevi da fine agosto a maggio i bui pomeriggi con cui gli abitanti devono convivere, e più si va verso nord, peggio è. Detto questo, a noi interessa il mondo outdoor e della pesca nei pochi mesi estivi in cui è praticabile. Visitando spesso la Svezia, la prima cosa che balza all’occhio è la gestione politica di queste acque. Qui la pesca è quasi totalmente pubblica, con rarissime eccezioni di gestioni private. La cosa insolita è che, nonostante la gestione pubblica, spesso la qualità della pesca è buona. Sicuramente una delle ragioni del fatto che vi sia ancora tanto pesce è dovuto alla bassa pressione di pesca in relazione ad una stagione molto breve, il che fa sì che, specialmente nel caso di lucci, il pesce non venga molto disturbato e quindi sia reattivo anche alla fine della stagione; in piccolo quello che accade nei grandi laghi dei territori del nord e in Jukon. Non che la gestione pubblica delle acque sia un male, il problema

After several trips to Sweden up to the most desolate Lapland, it is easy to think that the richness of these rivers, the proverbial education of the Swedes, and the beauty of the landscapes are a great fortune for those who live in these areas, but this is not always the case. First of all, it must be said that as summer fishermen we are used to seeing this territory in the months (few to tell the truth) of maximum splendor and light; but imagine the dark afternoons with which the inhabitants have to live from late August to May, and the further north you go, the worse it gets.

Having said that, we are interested in the outdoor world and fishing in the few summer months when it is practicable.

If you frequently visit Sweden, the first thing that catches your eye is the political management of these waters. Here fishing is almost totally public, with very rare exceptions of private management.

The unusual thing is that, despite public management, the quality of the fishing is often good. Surely one of the reasons why there is still so much fish is the low fishing pressure in relation to a very short season, which means that, especially in the case of pike, the fish is not very disturbed and therefore it is reactive at the end of the season too; in a small way, it is what happens in the great lakes of the northern territories and in Jukon. Not that public water management is bad, the problem

is that in some countries such as Italy, everything for everyone is interpreted as free looting. In the case of Sweden, the quality of fishing, together with a fairly respectful political management of the waters and good tourism promotion have meant that, among the Nordic countries, it has the largest number of touristfishermen from abroad. There are also several lodges specialized in fishing tourism, usually simple, but well managed.

Perhaps the sore point is the sector of tour operators that promote Sweden abroad, as they are often not Swedish and have a low average level of experience. Fortunately, there are also good interlocutors who make you want to go fishing in these places. A beacon in the fog of the fishing lodge managers is the Big Fish Sweden organization, managed by Italians. Its 3 lodges located in different parts of Sweden satisfy all types of fishing that can be practiced: spinning pike fishing within a lake with private fishing rights, a lodge located in a beautiful area for pike, trout and grayling for spinning and fly fishing enthusiasts, and a new specialized salmon fishing facility in eastern Lapland, on the Lainio River, a tributary of the Torne, and one of the largest rivers in Sweden. The

Nel caso della Svezia la qualità della pesca, insieme ad una gestione politica abbastanza rispettosa delle acque e ad una buona promozione turistica hanno fatto sì che, tra i paesi nordici, questo abbia il numero maggiore di turisti-pescatori dall’estero.

Anche di lodge specializzati in turismo pesca ce ne sono parecchi, solitamente spartani ma ben gestiti. La nota dolente forse è il settore dei tour operator che promuovono la Svezia all’estero, poichè spesso non sono svedesi e hanno un livello di competenza mediamente basso.

Fortunatamente esistono anche buoni interlocutori che fanno venire voglia di andare a pescare in questi luoghi. Un faro nella nebbia dei gestori di lodge di pesca è la struttura Big Fish Sweden, gestita da italiani, che con i suoi 3 lodge dislocati in diverse parti della Svezia accontenta tutte le tipologie di pesca che si possono praticare: la pesca al luccio a spinning all’interno di un lago con diritti di pesca privati, un lodge situato in una splendida zona per lucci, trote e temoli per appassionati di Spinning e pesca a mosca e una nuova struttura specializzata per la pesca al salmone nella Lapponia orientale, sul fiume Lainio, tributario del Torne, uno dei maggiori fiumi della Svezia. Il Lainio è uno splendido fiume, a

Lainio is a splendid river, sometimes very wild, rich in grayling and Baltic salmon in the right season, which is usually June-July. Some parts of the river can be reached by small helicopters from a local company, an experience that is certainly worth the trip. This river, along with some others that flow into the Baltic such as the Byske further south, offers excellent value for money for Atlantic salmon fishing, I would say among the best in Europe.

Obviously we are not talking about the large numbers of the Kola Peninsula but, if we consider the certainly interesting size of the Baltic salmon and the prices, I think it is difficult to find better alternatives.

And if we combine these rivers with professional lodge management, competent guides and “Italian” cuisine, then we are all ready to go. For the arrival airport I recommend Kiruna, well served and easily accessible from Stockholm.

This strange town, founded in the early 1900s, is the northernmost city in Sweden, within the Arctic Circle. Kiruna is built on an iron mine that is slowly undermining the town center and has not much to offer other than a visit to the mine itself. An uncontaminated area surrounds the city, and already a few kilometers away from the center, cars and buildings disappear and you meet reindeer and moose, in short, what we nature lovers usually look for.

Alcune parti del fiume sono raggiungibili con piccoli elicotteri di una ditta locale, un’ esperienza che sicuramente merita il viaggio. Questo fiume, insieme a qualche altro che sfocia nel Baltico come il Byske più a sud, offre un ottimo rapporto qualitàprezzo per la pesca del salmone Atlantico, direi fra le migliori d’Europa. Ovviamente non parliamo dei grandi numeri della Penisola di Kola ma, se consideriamo la taglia sicuramente interessante dei salmoni del baltico e i prezzi, credo sia difficile trovare alternative migliori.

Se poi uniamo questi fiumi ad una gestione professionale del lodge, guide competenti e una cucina “ Italiana”, allora siamo tutti pronti a partire. Per l’aeroporto di arrivo consiglio Kiruna, ben servito e facilmente raggiungibile da Stoccolma.

Questa strana cittadina, fondata all’inizio del 900, è la città più a nord della Svezia, all’interno del circolo polare artico.

Kiruna è costruita su una miniera di ferro che pian piano sta facendo sprofondare il paese e non ha molto da offrire se non una visita alla miniera stessa. Un’area incontaminata circonda la città, e già a pochi chilometri di distanza dal centro, automobili e costruzioni scompaiono e si incontrano renne e alci, insomma quello che noi amanti della natura solitamente cerchiamo.

Inizia da giovane con la tecnica dei colori a pastello e carboncino. Col tempo passa all' olio su tela ricevendo molti consensi e gratificazioni

Attualmente spazia tra acquerello e tecnica mista. Le sue opere passano da un monocromatismo puro ad esplosioni di colore che trasmettono "emozioni in pittura".

In his early youth he started painting with pastel colours and charcoal technique.

He later moved to oil on canvas and was very appreciated and esteemed.

He took part in his first collective exhibition in 1978 in Zelarino (Ve).

Currently his work ranges from watercolors to mixed

techniques, having passed from pure monochromatism to explosions of color transmitting “emotions in painting.”

Water is a fundamental element of his works, represented above all in the fishing environment, which he is very familiar with.

His works have been exhibited recently in Belvedere Villa in Mirano and in the hall of S. Stefano bank in Martellago.

He is member of the historic association “La Torre” which gathers all painters and sculptors of Mestre where he biweekly holds exhibitions of his works.

Elemento fondamentale dei suoi lavori è l’acqua, rappresentata soprattutto nell'ambiente piscatorio, che il pittore conosce bene.

La Val di Cembra è costituita da alcuni graziosi comuni, tra i quali Segonzano, Lisignago, Giovo, Sover. Piccoli villaggi dai quali si accede al torrente Avisio con camminate in mezzo a boschi e altipiani.

Il capoluogo Cembra, a 667 metri sul livello del Mare, rappresenta il cuore della produzione vinicola locale. Una visita che sicuramente merita una giornata, un capolavoro della natura, sono le piramidi di terra di Segonzano. Si tratta di torri, creste e

pinnacoli residui di un deposito morenico.

La pesca nell’Avisio è perfetta per chi vuole essenzialmente la qualità: infatti con una popolazione di trote marmorate che si aggira sull’80%, questo splendido torrente si colloca fra i migliori del Trentino. Alcuni

tratti sono gestiti in regime di nokill ed altri misti e il fatto che la qualità di questo torrente sia molto alta anche dopo numerose piene, è merito delle associazioni di pesca locali e di una gestione lungimirante. Questo è un fiume per chi apprezza pescare pesce

La Natura - questo è il fattore predominante che accomuna tutte le regioni della Norvegia, da sud fino all’estremo nord, dove mare e montagne si fondono in un intricato ramificarsi di incantevoli fiordi. Quando ci si trova in questo ambiente dove la “Madre Terra”, come la chiamavano i nativi d’America, ti mostra tutta la sua bellezza e la sua parte più selvaggia, ci si sente più piccoli, più

autentici, più vicini a colui che ha creato tutto ciò. Qui ci si rende davvero conto di quanto l’uomo sia solo uno spettatore di eventi che da millenni si ripetono anno dopo anno, proprio come la risalita riproduttiva del salmone. Oltre il 50% dei ceppi di salmoni selvatici dell’atlantico risale gli oltre 400 fiumi da riproduzione ancora attivi della Norvegia facendo di essa la patria indiscussa del Salmo Salar.

Infatti La Norvegia è il paese al mondo con la più numerosa risalita di salmoni.

Salmo Salar. In fact, Norway is the country with the most numerous salmon runs in the world. It is estimated that about half a million specimens return each year for spawning. Of these, about 100,000 salmon, according to catch reports, are hooked by fishermen every season and a fair number of these specimens are between 10, 15 and some around 20 kilograms in

dei fiumi più rinomati è ancora presente il loro passaggio. Qualche costruzione in stile britannico è addirittura ancora in uso. Al museo di Lærdal, oltre ad essere esposte alcune delle attrezzature da pesca dell’epoca, si è ricostruito un alloggio in stile. Per gli amanti di questa disciplina è davvero interessante conoscere le radici del proprio hobby e poterlo praticare lanciando le proprie mosche nelle stesse

Norway has always been the destination of fishing sportsmen. Time has long passed since the first British lords colonized the Norwegian rivers in the late 1920s and early 1930s. They introduced the art of flyfishing to a population which, until then,

had seen salmon only as a natural means of sustenance for entire villages. Since then, methods and techniques have evolved together with the new technologies applied to the construction of equipment used for salmon fishing. But the emotions experienced along the banks of the rivers have remained the same. In some areas near the most famous rivers we can still

see the remains of their passage. Some British-style buildings are still in use.

At the Lærdal museum, in addition to exhibiting some of the fishing equipment of the time, an old-style accommodation has been reconstructed. The lovers of this discipline are really keen on tracing the roots of their hobby and can practice the sport by casting their flies in the same

Infatti in alcuni fiumi i momenti per le migliori catture sono

indicate in un dato periodo della stagione. Alcuni fiumi sono denominati “fiumi tardivi" mentre altri “fiumi precoci" in relazione al periodo di picco della risalita del ceppo di salmone presente nel fiume. Ad esempio su alcuni dei fiumi più rinomati le informazioni raccolte suggeriscono di pianificare un viaggio di pesca a giugno sul Namsen, Gaula a valle del Gaulfoss, Orkla, Stjørdal,

The salmon fishing season in Norway normally starts on June 1 and ends on August 31. In some rivers there may be exceptions due to regional or local

variations, however the season starting date is never earlier than 15 May and never goes beyond 30 September, except in sporadic cases where it reaches October 10. As a rule, the river to fish from should be chosen according to the period available, and to the characteristics of the river itself. In fact, for some rivers the best catching time is indicated in the seasonal

fishing timetable. Some rivers are called "late rivers," while others are called "early rivers," based on the peak run period of the salmon stock populating the river. For example, for some of the most famous rivers, fishing enthusiasts are informed on when to plan their fishing trip. June is the month for the Namsen, Gaula downstream of the Gaulfoss, Orkla,

possono riservare delle belle sorprese in termini di catture.

Un vecchio slogan recitava: Un posto vicino per andare lontano. La Norvegia è sicuramente un paese dove trovare Natura, Storia ed emozioni uniche… quelle della pesca a mosca al Salmone Atlantico.

Stjørdal, Surna and Neiden rivers and July is suggested for fishing on the Orkla, Stryn, Reisa, Reppafjord, Malselv rivers.

August is the month recommended for the Numendal, Mandal, Bjerkreim, Suldal, Gaula upstream of the Gaulfoss and Lakselv rivers. Clearly these are general indications based on the historicity of their catches. Conditions may change

according to the amount of snowfall during the winter and the early or late start of the Scandinavian spring. The vastness of Norway, with its high number of rising rivers, will surely allow every fisherman to find the ideal situation as needed, according to the time and finances available. In fact, no river, even the less famous ones, are to be underestimated.

I will never get tired of repeating that all rivers can hold some nice surprises in terms of catches.

An old slogan says: A nearby place where you can go far. Norway is certainly a country where you can find Nature, History and unique emotions… like that of fly-fishing for the Atlantic Salmon.

CLASSIC TACKLE

THE RIGHT BOOKS di Riccardo di Stabile Finalmente si parla di libri antichi di pesca, una grande passione di molti pescatori. Parlare di canne e mulinelli è sempre bello, ma va ricordato che tutto parte sempre dai libri, è lì che ci sono le informazioni, è da lì che sono iniziate le grandi questioni che hanno fatto la storia della pesca a mosca. Lo sapevate che sono stati scritti più libri sulla pesca a mosca che su tutte le altre tecniche messe insieme? Una ragione potrebbe essere questa: la pesca a mosca ha da sempre affascinato molti intellettuali, ha coinvolto appassionati e studiosi di entomologia, di storia della pesca a mosca, di collezionismo e i grandi viaggiatori,

che con i loro report di viaggi hanno interessato i pescatori.

Per non parlare poi dell’ittiologia. Forse il settore che è stato meno toccato è quello riguardante le attrezzature da pesca, fatta eccezione per le mosche; strano ma è così. Risulta difficile e riduttivo fare un elenco dei libri importanti sulla pesca a mosca, quindi ci limiteremo a parlare di alcuni volumi essenziali con cui consiglio di iniziare gli studi. Dal Treatise di Juliana Barbers, la monaca del convento di Sopwell, un must che ci fa capire da dove siamo partiti, mi sposterei direttamente alla fine dell’800 con alcune pietre miliari di cui proprio non possiamo fare a meno.

We have finally come to talk about ancient fishing books - a great passion of many fishermen. It is always nice to talk about rods and reels but we should remember that everything always starts with books because that's where we find information, and where the great issues that made the history of fly fishing are discussed. Did you know that more books have been written about fly fishing than about all the other techniques put together? One reason could be that fly fishing has always fascinated many intellectuals and has involved enthusiasts and scholars of entomology, lovers of fly fishing history and

great travelers who have interested fishermen with their travel chronicles, not to mention ichthyology. Perhaps the sector of fishing tackle is the least discussed, with the exception of flies.

It may seem strange, but it is so. It is difficult and reductive to make a list of the important books on fly fishing, so we will just recommend some essential volumes to start your studies. The Treatise of Juliana Barbers, the nun of the Sopwell convent, is a ‘must’ to understand where we started from. Then I would move directly to the end of the 19th century with some necessary milestones. If you don't want to study all F.M. Halford’s books,

choose at least two of then, if only as an introduction to Gem Skues's books on nymph fishing. I will not give the titles because they should all be read. But the diatribe between "dry flies and nymphs" is a fundamental step, given that in this battle we are still up to our necks, if only to read the cordial and calm ways with which Halford and Skues touched a sore spot. Another book that I feel I can recommend is West Leonard's Natural fly and its Imitation, probably one of the first with tables of natural insects and artificial reproductions alongside. Colmondeley Pennel is essential to have some good technical knowledge, as

is Mottram's book on the vision of trout. If we move to France, I recommend Vavon (for those who are not scared of 500 pages) and some Ritz books to get an idea of the French market, which is considered by some people as nothing more than the pursuit of the most advanced English techniques. I know this phrase will not appeal to everyone, but comparing French books to English books is like comparing a good sports car to a Ferrari. This is not because the British have an edge, but because their social system at the end of the 19th century allowed the wealthy to do nothing from morning to evening but to devote themselves

Non scrivo i titoli perché sarebbero da leggere tutti ma la diatriba tra “secchisti e ninfaroli “è un passaggio obbligato, visto che in questa battaglia ci siamo ancora dentro fino al collo, non fosse altro per leggere i modi cordiali e pacati con cui Halford e Skues si mettevano le dita negli

occhi. Un altro libro che mi sento di consigliare é il Natural fly and his Imitation di West Leonard, probabilmente uno dei primi con tavole di insetti naturali e accanto le riproduzioni artificiali.

Colmondeley Pennel è fondamentale per avere qualche buona nozione tecnica, così come il libro di Mottram sulla visione della trota. Spostandoci in Francia consiglio Vavon (per chi non si fa spaventare da 500 pagine) e qualche libro di Ritz per avere

un’idea del mercato francese, che per qualcuno non è altro che l’inseguimento dei più evoluti inglesi. So che questa frase non piacerà a tutti, ma paragonare i libri francesi ai libri inglesi è come paragonare una buona auto sportiva alla Ferrari. Questo non perché gli inglesi abbiano una marcia in più, ma perché il loro sistema sociale alla fine dell’ottocento dava la possibilità ai benestanti di non fare nulla dalla mattina alla sera e di

dedicarsi completamente allo studio delle loro passioni. Anche dall’altra parte dell’oceano in quel periodo sono stati pubblicati libri importanti come l’American Angler’s book del 1864 di Thadeus Noris, grande commerciante di articoli per la pesca a mosca che lui stesso costruiva. Per la chiarezza e la facilità di consultazione il libro ebbe un immediato successo e incentivò la diffusione della pesca alla trota con la mosca. A lui va il merito

Of all the "giants" of fishing such as Thaddeus Norris, Lee Wulff, and Ray Bargman, it is from Gordon that the modern technique of fly fishing is said to have originated. I hope that reading these fundamental texts will encourage enthusiasts to learn more and continue with their studies.

Chiuderei i fondamentali americani con tutto quello che volete di Theodore Gordon. Theodore Gordon è una figura centrale nella storia della pesca a mosca americana.

Tra tutti i “giganti” della pesca come Thaddeus Norris, Lee Wulff, Ray Bargman è da Gordon che si dice sia scaturita la tecnica moderna della pesca a mosca. Spero che la lettura di questi testi fondamentali riesca a suscitare negli appassionati la curiosità di saperne ancora di più e continuare con gli studi.

Last May I visited a lodge on Ragged Island in the Bahamas, which is so far south that it is closer to Cuba than to Exuma Island. The lodge is owned by local people. To get there I flew from Atlanta to Nassau, I arrived early in the evening, then the next morning I took a Bahamas Air flight to Georgetown, Exuma at 6:20. From there, the lodge arranged

a charter flight for me to Ragged Island.

At noon I was already fishing. Everything went smoothly. I managed to get home in just one day. My original plan was to catch some bonefish and (weather permitting) take advantage of the offshore fishing opportunities. Fortunately, the weather was so beautiful and the fishing so interesting that I spent most of my time

in deep water and only a couple of days in the flats. Both experiences were great.

For deep-sea fishing we used a 31-foot Contender with two 250 hp outboards. It was an extremely comfortable boat and fast enough to allow us to reach seldom visited fishing areas within a 30-40 mile radius of the lodge. Our fishing was a mix of trolling with conventional tackle and

some fly casting. We often found schools of tuna eating on the surface and were able to get close enough to use our fly rods.

We also visited several shallows where we successfully fly fished. The variety of fish here is incredible: we ended up catching more than 15 different species, including all tuna species. On a number of occasions, we have caught what we thought were 15 to 25 lb yellowfin tuna, but each time we had them eaten by sharks. We caught large quantities of mackerel, large dolphin fish up to 25 lbs. The highlight of our trip came in another off-the-beaten-track and outof-the-way area where we encountered a herd of 15 to 30 pound amberjacks. We fished with Clousers of various sizes and it was an unforgettable day. As for the bonefish, it was a great experience and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the guide service. Brad, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and despite our limited experience he put us in a position to fish very well on sight. I don't think there

is a delicate way to put it: most of the bonefish on Ragged Island are stupid. It is enough to launch in front of a group of bonefish that some of them will surely take the bait. Most of the bonefish we caught were around two to three pounds in weight, but we saw fish that were six to eight pounds. For those who like to fish large barracudas Ragged is the perfect place. We caught several 10 or 15 lbs. We

also saw several permits, but we didn't get a chance to cast on them. The lodge at Ragged Island can host four fishermen, it is new and equipped with high-speed Internet connection, satellite TV and air conditioning. The food is typical of the Bahamas, simple but delicious. Be aware that this is a great place for fishing, but not for other services. Don't expect nightlife and confusion: there are only

70 inhabitants on the island and there is not much else to do besides fishing.

The cost for a stay is low and, for those who love to fish, the quality-price ratio is excellent. It is the ideal place for the passionate fisherman who does not need frills. It is also a great place for novice bonefish anglers who want to learn how to catch them. In conclusion, a splendid destination that I warmly recommend.

In diverse occasioni abbiamo catturato quello che credevamo fosse tonno pinna gialla da 15 a 25 libbre, ma ogni volta ce li siamo fatti mangiare dagli squali. Abbiamo catturato sgombri in grande quantità, grosse lampughe fino a 25 libbre. Il momento

clou del nostro viaggio è arrivato in un'altra zona poco battuta e fuori mano dove abbiamo incontrato un branco di ricciole da 15 a 30 libbre. Abbiamo pescato con i Clousers di varie dimensioni ed è stata una giornata indimenticabile.

Per quanto riguarda il bonefish è stata una esperienza fantastica e sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso dalla qualità del servizio di guida. Brad, la nostra

guida era estremamente competente e nonostante la nostra esperienza limitata ci ha messo in condizioni di pescare a vista molto bene. Credo che non ci sia un modo delicato per dirlo: la maggior parte dei bonefish a Ragged Island sono stupidi. È sufficiente lanciare davanti ad un gruppetto di bonefish che sicuramente qualcuno abbocca. La maggior parte dei bonefish che abbiamo catturato erano del peso circa di due o tre libbre, ma abbiamo visto pesci da sei a otto libbre. Per coloro che amano pescare grossi barracuda Ragged è il luogo perfetto. Ne abbiamo catturati svariati da 10 o 15 libbre. Abbiamo visto anche diversi permit ma non abbiamo avuto occasione di lanciarci sopra. Il lodge a Ragged può ospitare quattro pescatori, è nuovo e dispone di collegamento Internet ad alta velocità, TV satellitare e aria condizionata.

Il cibo è tipico delle Bahamas, semplice ma delizioso . Sappiate che questo è un ottimo posto per la pesca, ma non per altri servizi.

Non aspettatevi vita notturna e confusione: gli abitanti sono solo 70 e sull'isola e non c'è molto altro da fare oltre alla pesca. Il costo per un soggiorno è contenuto e, per chi ama pescare, il rapporto qualità- prezzo è ottimo. E’ il posto ideale per il pescatore appassionato che non ha bisogno di fronzoli. È anche un ottimo posto per pescatori di bonefish principianti che vogliono imparare a catturarli. In conclusione una splendida destinazione che mi sento caldamente di consigliare.
