The travel market is recovering very quickly, but I think it will still take some time for fishermen to start travelling again as serenely as they did a few years ago. This difficult moment has made us reflect on the management of our travels and, thanks to a new collaboration with Lab Travel in Cuneo, today we are able to offer all the necessary services to those who want to travel without risk and inconvenience.

In fact, we think it is very important to offer insurance and protection guarantees to our fishermen customers, especially to those who will choose extremely adventurous destinations. Nella pesca, e in special modo quando si viaggia lontano per pescare, esistono meccanismi molto delicati e se uno degli ingranaggi salta o non funziona perfettamente, spesso tutto il viaggio viene compromesso. Si tratta di piccole sinergie, momenti fra un transfert e un altro o chi per primo lancerà in quella determinata pool. Spesso ci sono attese importanti dove non vola una mosca nel vero senso della parola, come quando si aspettano le valigie allo sbarco di un aereo, consapevoli della perdita di tempo nel caso non arrivino subito, oppure quando viene definito il turno delle beat all’inizio di una settimana di pesca, momenti sacri da cui spesso dipende l’esito della settimana . Ed è proprio in questi momenti che vengono decise

le sorti dei compagni di viaggio, o meglio se questi compagni di viaggio lo saranno anche in futuro. Il viaggio di pesca non è come andare a fare una vacanza “normale”, come andare al mare o a fare una passeggiata in montagna. Il viaggio di pesca spesso è stato atteso per molto tempo e, per alcune destinazioni, tutta la vita. Conosco persone che la settimana prima di partire hanno problemi a dormire perche non riescono a decidere che canne mettere in valigia e con che set di code. Tante variabili, spesso troppe. E’ questo il bello della pesca. Quindi l’importanza di avere compagni di viaggio selezionati è fondamentale. Come diceva il maestro di pesca Luciano Tosi ”non si va a pescare con dei poco pratici”, probabilmente aveva ragione. In questi

These are small synergies, moments between one transfer and the next, or a question of who will be the first to cast into a certain pool. Often there are important expectations when a fly literally does not fly. E ho visto tutti i tipi di clienti possibili, da quelli che avevano già il gilet da pesca in aeroporto (la categoria più pericolosa), a quelli che avevano sempre qualcosa da insegnare alle guide, anche se non erano mai stati a pescare in quei fiumi. Ricordo un paio di clienti in Argentina, una quindicina di anni fa: avevano esasperato la guida a forza di fare

esattamente il contrario di quello che lui gli suggeriva, buttando via così 5 dei 6 giorni di pesca, ma ricordo anche quella volta nel Ponoi dove io e Angelo abbiamo salvato la pelle ad una guida caduta nel fiume, con il risultato di vincere il premio per la cattura più grande della settimana. Ricordi che rimangono a lungo e di cui si parla spesso nelle cene di pescatori. Conosco coppie di amici che pescano insieme da 40 anni e che se uno dei due non può partire, l’altro rimane a casa, proprio perchè sa che sarebbe difficile sostituire il compagno di viaggio. La

There are a lot of variables, often too many. This is the beauty of fishing. Thus it is of fundamental importance to have wellchosen fishing mates. As the fishing master Luciano Tosi used to say, “You do not go fishing with inexperienced people”. He was probably right. In these 30 years of travelling I have seen everything, good pools “stolen” by giving money to the guides or paying guides to work better, and clients quarrelling due to the guides’ incompetence, or even out of nervousness. And I have seen all possible types of clients, from those who were already wearing the fishing vest at the airport (this is the most dangerous category) to those who always had something to teach to the guides, even if they had never fished those rivers

before. I remember a couple of clients in Argentina, about 15 years ago: they exasperated their guide by constantly doing exactly the opposite of what he suggested, thus wasting 5 of the 6 fishing days. I also remember that time when Angelo and I saved the skin of a guide that had fallen into the Ponoi River, so that we won the prize for the biggest catch of the week.

Such memories remain for a long time and are often talked about during fishermen’s dinners. I know many friends who have been fishing together for 40 years: when one of the two cannot leave, the other one stays at home too, exactly because he knows that it would be difficult to replace his fishing mate.

Fishing is made up of long waits and short moments that are very quick, like baseball. In those moments, having your fishing

In questi ultimi 20 anni abbiamo viaggiato insieme in oltre 30 paesi a pescare in giro per il mondo senza mai avere una discussione, sempre capendoci al volo con un’occhiata anche a 100 metri di distanza. Problemi ce ne sono capitati, dalle guide poco professionali, a quella volta che ad Angelo si è staccata la retina di un occhio in Kamchatka, o quella volta che un terzo amico in Yukon si è spaccato il naso battendo su un sasso ed eravamo molto lontani dal lodge, e ancora quando abbiamo rotto il filo di accensione della barca, rimanendo bloccati in mezzo al lago

in Canada. Una volta in Groenlandia, nel viaggio in barca di ritorno dopo una settimana in tenda, siamo capitati in mezzo a una tempesta con onde così forti che sembrava che stessero picchiando lo scafo della barca con una mazza da muratore… lì ce la siamo vista brutta! Per non parlare di quando in Canada tre orsi hanno cominciato ad inseguire Angelo lungo il fiume e lui, invece di scappare, li fotografava.

Avventure che riviviamo quando siamo in aeroporto ad aspettare qualche coincidenza e che raccontiamo a qualcuno che si è aggiunto al nostro viaggio, storie che lasciano intuire che catturare qualche pesce dall’altra parte del mondo probabilmente non è il nostro primo obiettivo.

In the past 20 years, we have travelled together to more than 30 countries all over the world without quarreling. We always understand each other immediately just with a glance. We did have problems,too: Angelo had the retina of one eye detached in Kamchatka, another time a friend of ours in Yukon broke his nose by hitting against a stone, and we were far away from the lodge. In another trip we broke the ignition wire of the boat and got stuck in the middle of the lake. Once in Greenland, during

the boat trip back after a week in a tent, we stumbled into a storm with such strong waves that seemed to be hitting the hull of the boat with a sledge hammer. We had a bad time there, not to mention when in Canada three bears began chasing Angelo along the river and he took photographs of them instead of running away. We relive such adventures when we are waiting at the airport with new friends who have joined our journey.

These stories suggest that our first aim is probably not to catch some fish halfway around the world.

TUNDRA CAMP ON THE SUKHAYA RIVER

POWERFUL SALMON, TROPHY PIKE, BROWN TROUT AND WHITEFISH Many people know about the Yokanga river, one of the largest rivers of the Kola Peninsula, but few have heard of its tributary, the Sukhaya river. This river was not well-known for a long time, it is located in the hard-to-reach tundra and represents a great interest to the fans of salmon, brown trout and trophy pike fishing.

PERFECT CAMP LOCATION The place for the construction of the camp was not chosen by chance, from here it is convenient to get to the places of fishing in the sections of both rivers - Sukhaya and Yokanga. During the week, the angler visits fishing spots, located on both rivers, and every day he gets acquainted with various places and fishing conditions.

CAMP Camp “Sukhaya” is designated for 8 anglers and consists of a complex of arctic-type tents with an inflatable frame and a heated floor. Four double tents have been prepared for camp guests, each of which has two beds, a wardrobe for clothes, an electric heater, lamps and sockets. A large dining room and a tent-bathroom with showers and hot water are located separately. Wooden platforms erected between the facilities allow you to move around the camp comfortably. There is satellite Internet for clients in the camp, other connection is not available. Electricity 220V is supplied by the generator in the morning from 7.00 to 10.00 am and in the evening from 6.00 to 11:00 pm.

TAKING CARE OF THE RIVER During the season, the project team carries out security measures and mon-itors the upper section of the Sukhaya river with unmanned surveillance equipment. In autumn, special attention is given to the control of spawning grounds.

Among the lands of brave bulls and pastures of ancient holm oaks, where the Iberian pig roams at ease, there are some of the best rivers and reservoirs for fishing the Gypsy Barbel. The Gypsy Barbel (Luciobarbus Sclateri) is an endemic species of southern Spain. Its characteristic grayish-olive colors on its back separated by that lateral band that gives way to a yellow orange on their bellies makes these fish look like authentic gold ingots that can measure up a meter in length. Its largest populations are concentrated throughout the entire autonomous community of Andalucia. This area offers many restaurants, taverns and

bars where you can taste delicious typical dishes, wines or craft beer together with great landscapes, mountains, and natural spaces where the famous and rare Iberian Lynx lives. Thanks to its historical heritage full of Arab architectural vestiges it is undoubtedly a unique destination for any fly fisherman who wants to live an unforgettable experience in an incomparable setting.

There are areas and times of the year in which these fish feed mainly on baitfish, showing a very aggressive behavior. We travelled 3 days to fish these authentic kings of the south, in the mountains of the provinces of Seville, Cádiz and Huelva. In this

For this type of fishing you need rods between 9 and 10 feet, and lines 6 or 7, reels with a good brake and a well loaded backing, since these fish are capable of dislodging many meters in a few seconds. Also floating lines and tipets between 0.20 and 0.28mm are used, depending on the scenario, type of fishing and average

sizes of the fish that we are going to face.

Our first stop was in the province of Seville, where we fished all day one of its rivers where gypsy barbels rise, descend and patrol the banks to feed and where the beetle would be the protagonist of the day. It didn´t matter if the barbels were eating nymphs or stirring the riverbed, a blow with our beetle on the surface was enough for these fish to make them raise their heads, look for our imitation to swallow and start an endless race after we hooked them. These fish are authentic locomotives that on many occasions put our teams to the limit, although they rarely

exceed 2 kg of weight.

The next day, after a good breakfast, we left for Cádiz, where we would fish a river that flows into one of its most famous reservoirs.

Its gypsy barbels are perhaps the largest and most beautiful in all Andalucia and we used both dry flies and nymphs to catch those giants. We managed to get very good and precious specimens, some weighing more than 4 kg. For sure a day to be remembered.

Our adrenaline was at the top: it is a type of fishing where you have to be very fast in the cast, but calm in the dive, since once you see the fish, that usually comes at full speed along the banks in a predatory attitude, you have to cast your streamer in its path, wait for a few seconds for it to be more or less close to you and then start to collect. That´s the moment where the gypsy barbel

comes out behind the streamer at full speed, to hunt it down, at this point you would nail it and it would come out again, with a powerful snatch capable of ripping the line from your hands in an aggressive race causing your rod to wobble from top to bottom. Raising your heart rate to the brink of a heart attack, this fishing is not suitable for people with heart issues but suitable for fishermen in search of strong emotions. It is definitely a fishing that makes you fall in love with these barbels, the gold of AlAndalus, the Gypsy Barbel.

La prima fermata è stata in provincia di Siviglia, dove abbiamo pescato tutto il giorno in uno dei fiumi in cui i barbi gitani salgono, scendono e pattugliano le rive per alimentarsi e in cui gli scarabei sarebbero stati i protagonisti della giornata. Anche se i barbi stavano mangiando ninfe o perlustrando il letto del fiume, un colpetto in superficie col nostro scarabeo bastava perché questi pesci alzassero la testa e cercassero di inghiottire

Siamo riusciti a catturare alcuni esemplari molto belli e preziosi, alcuni di peso superiore ai 4 kg. È stato di sicuro un giorno da ricordare.

Per il nostro ultimo giorno attraverso le terre d’Andalusia ci ha guidati un nostro grande amico, grande conoscitore della zona di Huelva, dove i barbi si cibano di pesciolini che abbondano sulle rive del vivaio, un tipo di pesca che non avevamo mai praticato prima. Avevamo l’adrenalina al massimo: è un tipo di pesca in cui bisogna essere molto veloci nel lancio, ma calmi nell’immersione, perché una volta avvistato il pesce, che di

la nostra imitazione per ingaggiare poi una lotta infinita dopo che li avevamo allamati. Questi pesci sono autentiche locomotive che in molte occasioni portano al limite i nostri team, sebbene raramente superino i 2 kg di peso.

Il giorno seguente, dopo una buona colazione, siamo partiti alla volta di Cádiz, dove avremmo pescato in un fiume che confluisce in una delle riserve più famose. I suoi barbi gitani sono forse i più grossi e belli di tutta l’Andalusia e noi abbiamo usato sia mosche secche, sia ninfe per catturare quei giganti.

La gestione della pesca in Finlandia

Un decimo della Finlandia è costituito da specchi d’acqua e quasi un terzo della popolazione del Paese pesca nel tempo libero. Questo può spiegare perché la stragrande maggioranza dei 500.000 cottage estivi sono stati costruiti accanto a laghi e laghetti. Fishing has a solid position in the Finnish cultural lexicon, with revered Finnish author Juhani Aho (1861-1921) famously describing fishing as an experience that left him “spellbound, intoxicated”. You can’t disagree once you see the lake surface glistening in the early morning sun, inviting you to relax on the dock, enjoy the immaculate stillness and then lure in perches from the surrounding waters. Fishing is a year-round activity in Finland; only the fishing styles and species vary according to season. The vast and clean waters, a wide variety of species, beautiful lakes and rivers are attracting a growing number of fishing tourists to Finland. Finland’s waters are home to about 60 species of fish, of which about 20 are actively pursued by fishermen. Leisure fishers often catch perches, pikes and pike-perch. Resilient whitefish are also popular among fishing tourists. Recreational fishing is one of the most popular sports. Almost one in three Finns has taken up fishing. The number of recreational fishermen in Finland amounts to nearly 1.6 million. Of males, approximately 40% are recreational fishermen, while 20% of females go fishing. The number of fishermen has fallen over the course of the 2000s, but this trend now appears to have reversed.

Recreational fishing is becoming more popular, particularly among those under 10 and over 45 years of age. The combined annual catch of recreational fishing amounts to almost 30 million

Fishing waters generally come under the jurisdiction of the local fishing association, which administers fishing rights to jointly owned waters.

The legislation on this is about to be amended and may cause certain changes to this situation. In some areas fishing waters are divided between real estate holdings or even by the plot. The State, many cities and municipalities, corporations and companies are also major owners of fishing waters as a result of their land holdings. State-owned waters can be found in large lakes and the open sea. The 1996 amendments to the 1994 Fishing Act made it easier and less bureaucratic for foreigners, too, to acquire fishing permits. The autonomous Åland Islands have their own Fishing Act and their own fishing permit procedures. Finland’s reputation as ‘the land of a thousand lakes’ and the huge archipelagos stretching across its miles of coastline draw multitudes of anglers to the country to catch the 60 species of fish to be found there. The good news for them is that fishing licenses are fairly easy to obtain and can be used at any of Finland’s many lakes, waterways, or oceans for a great catch. These are some of the most highly recommended spots in Finland for booking your next fishing trip.

Nauvo Nauvo is a part of the Turku Archipelago and made up of 3,000 islands of various sizes. Ferries run between the islands during the summer and regular fishing excursions are organized. The Nauvo village is a particularly good place to stay for trips due to its beautiful old buildings, serene atmosphere, and quaint restaurants.

Rymättylä Also on the southwest archipelago, Rymättylä is a farming district with a long history of fishing, which forms an essential part of the local economy. As such, there are also multiple piers and ferries available for fishing.

River Tenojoki Regarded as the best place in Finland for salmon fishing, the river Tenojoki in Lapland also holds graylings which can grow up to 2kg in weight and the prolific salmon can weigh between 15 to 25kg.

Lake District Also known as Lakeland, this huge area consisting of thousands of lakes, makes for some of Finland’s most prominent inland fishing. There are a huge variety of lakes and rivers of all sizes for anglers to choose from, where you can find dozens of fish including zander, whitefish, bream, carp, vendace, trout, and salmon among others.

Tampere The Tampere region has over 2,500 lakes which cover 15% of its total area, ranging from calm lakes to fast flowing rapids. It is also a good area for zander, giving it the nickname ‘zanderland’ by anglers. Other catches are salmanoids, perch, pike, and brown trout.

Kuhmo This north eastern municipality of Finland is full of waterways containing, among other species, pike, perch, vendace, zander, and brown trout and is favoured by lure fishers. Not only do the rapids form natural nurseries but the remote location makes the waters almost entirely unspoilt.

Well, the pieces created by Cody Richardson, a Colorado native, are something you just have to see - new, different, unique and special in every way. His work is colorful, vibrant and literally magical. No wonder, as Cody has been exploring rivers and streams of the Rocky Mountains ever since he was a little kid.

Today, though, Cody still fly fishes as much as he can and he keeps traveling to different destinations. But it’s not just to catch his favorite species - along with his fly rod, he makes sure he

I got the idea while on a road trip, looking at the different license plates people have on the road and the pride they feel in their states. I then went on a very challenging hunt to find license plates to build my first Colorado trout. > Is there a certain rule you follow while putting together your beautiful, one of a kind pieces?

I like my plates to have just enough rust and patina to show that they’ve lived exciting lives. I like to use different woods and metals to bring each piece to life. > How do you get your material? Are there some plates you

It usually takes 4 or so weeks for a piece to make it from conception to delivery, depending on the intricacy of the wood and metalworking. > How much time do you spend fly fishing? Are you more of a saltwater or freshwater kind of guy?

To answer your first question, as much as possible. I find that a connection to the water keeps me inspired in the studio. Being that I live in the Rocky Mountains, trout fishing is the majority of my time on the water, but ever since my first foray into saltwater fly fishing in the Bahamas, the flats call to me like a siren. > There are lots of beautiful pieces shown on your website and available for purchase. Is it possible to order a custom piece?

I love putting together custom pieces for customers looking to add that special touch. I’ve brought logos to life through license plates and even forayed into hunting and Jeep artwork as well.

Most of the pieces you see on my site started out as custom pieces and then more and more folks asked for them. > Regarding your art, what would be the most memorable experience you can remember?

Belize had to be the most memorable for me. I spent weeks casting at permit and searching for license plates with no avail until I came upon the motherload when I met a fellow

who worked for the Belizean DMV. Since then we have built a relationship and they have supplied the plates that make up my highly sought after Belize Permit. And I also finally caught that permit! > What do you need in order to create – in terms of space, food, rituals, etc?

I find a beer to be the most creative fuel, behind fishing of course. I try to focus my creativity on making each piece unique to the individual receiving the artwork. Spending time on the phone or communicating with each customer really helps get the creative juices flowing and ensure each piece cherished. > When it comes to art and creating, what are your plans and ideas for the future? Is your style moving towards a certain direction?

I feel my style is pretty set, but I’m always looking for those new hard-to-find license plates and fish profiles. Currently, I’m working with a client to create a Hawaiian Giant Trevally with hopes to secure Seychelles and Australian plates to create GTs as well. "In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. "With these words, Norman Maclean began his book, which then inspired the film, "A River Runs Through It. "It was the life history of a boy from Missoula, Montana.

He was the son of a Presbyterian minister and a devoted fly fisherman in the years before World War II. The Big Blackfoot River is flanked by a mighty pine grove for most of its length of 75 miles, from the source to its confluence

with the Clark Fork River, just to the east of the town. There are no busy roads, bars, restaurants or luxury villas. There are bigger rivers in Montana that host bigger trout. But few offer fishermen a more captivating mix of rapids punctuated by wonderful stones, low rocky bottoms and green pools that I have rarely found elsewhere. While I was on the boat that day, Montana’s “Big Sky” lived up to its name: the sunlight glinted on the river and the only sound that I heard was the gurgling of the emerald water. My guide

for those fishing days was Richard, who was 25 years old and lived in Missoula, where he owned a small fishing shop.

He slid our rubber boat into the water, handed me the rod mounted with one of his favorite flies, a big grasshopper, and we started the day. In my first cast I was unlucky and hooked a branch, but immediately afterwards I saw my fly go down and begin gliding downstream. In one moment the fish had risen from the bottom… and when I got it in the landing net, I saw that it was a beautiful copper-

colored trout, one of the few species originating from the Big Blackfoot.

I am not a religious person or much of a fisherman, but darned if I did not feel something celestial at that moment.

Catholics have the Vatican, Muslims the Makkah, but for me there is no destination more sacred than the Big Blackfoot River.

Once known only by local fishermen, the Blackfoot River gained great popularity in 1992, when Robert Redford’s film taken from the book by Maclean and interpreted by the young Brad Pitt, stirred the interest for this sport. This river became a pilgrimage destination for many fly fishermen. I was among those inspired by this film. As a boy, in upstate New York, I had fished local rivers and lakes. But when I saw the film, fly fishing struck me as something richer and more complex than conventional fishing, and almost a form of art. This film invited intelligent reflection on various topics: the relationship between fathers and sons and between brothers, love, loss, the fascination of nature, and the unsettling power of water. As for many others, "A River Runs Through It" has become a sort of sacred text for me, a spiritual guide. Bewitched by this film, I began fly fishing with an almost obsessive passion from Wyoming to Idaho, and from the Bahamas to Belize. Yet, almost 25 years after, I still had not been on the Big Blackfoot. It was time to discover it.

Maclean structured his book around four main fishing scenes, three of which were set on the Big Blackfoot. For two days my guide, Richard and I fished in these three spots: the canyon above Clearwater Bridge, a beach downstream, and the mouth of Belmont Creek. "The canyon above the old Clearwater Bridge is the place where the Blackfoot roars the loudest," Maclean wrote. It is here that he first talked about the beauty of fly fishing.

After a period of neglect in the 1970s and 1980s, the Big Blackfoot was cleverly managed by a consortium of public and

Da quando questo film mi ha stregato, ho iniziato a pescare con la mosca con una passione quasi ossessiva, dal Wyoming all'Idaho, dalle Bahamas al Belize.

Eppure, quasi 25 anni dopo, non ero ancora stato sul Big Blackfoot. Era tempo di scoprirlo.

Maclean ha strutturato il suo libro intorno a quattro scene di pesca principali, tre delle quali sono ambientate sul Big Blackfoot. Per due giorni io e la mia guida Richard abbiamo pescato in questi tre punti: il canyon sopra Clearwater Bridge, una spiaggia a valle e la foce di Belmont Creek. Just before I left Montana, Great Britain had voted to leave the European Union, thus putting the global economy into a crisis, and a member of my family had received a serious medical diagnosis.

However, at that moment on the Big Blackfoot River, all that existed was sun, water and a fish at the other end of my rod." "One great thing about fly fishing," Maclean wrote, "is that after a while nothing exists of the world, but thoughts about fly fishing."

This travel was for me more magical than expected: the river was beautiful and well preserved, I got to know good guys and I fished good fish, exactly in the most legendary spots of my favorite book.

ricevuto una grave diagnosi medica, ma in quel momento sul Big Blackfoot River, tutto ciò che esisteva era il sole, l'acqua e un pesce all'altra estremità della mia canna. The basic principle of fly tying is the ability of a tyer to imitate an insect or a small fish. In the very root, tying salmon flies isn't different as it involves shaping feathers and fur around a hook with the intention to mimic a small fish. But there is so much more. Tying a classic fully dressed fly is very challenging and demanding, it takes a lot of skill and patience, great sense of aesthetics and composition. It is nothing but art. Sadly, you don't see or meet many classic fly tyers these days, but the few of them are doing their best to preserve this art. One of them and truly one of the best is Mr. Stefano Farkas, a winemaker living and working in Chianti Area, Florence province, who creates pure art with his own hands. He is a true master - his flies are dressed to perfection and looking at them makes you thrilled and mesmerized. For H2O Magazine, Mr. Stefano was happy to answer some questions, share some of his experience and thoughts, and provide some photos of his beautiful pieces of art.

1. Do you remember your first experience with fly fishing?

- Around the end of the seventies I went for the first time to Florence in the fly fishing shop of Roberto Pragliola,whom you will certainly heard about, especially for the TLT ( total casting

technique ). He died not a long time ago and he surely has been one of the top fly fishing casters worldwide. I approached the casting techniques in the back of his shop. Obviously I gained new friends and my brother had the same passion too. With them I fished many rivers not far from us, like Lima, Arno river, Magra, Nera and others. Slowly we started to travel further away, to other beautiful rivers like Aveto or Roia, in Ventimiglia, about five hours driving. But what really changed my life was Slovenia, where I went in 1978 for the first time. It was still Yugoslavia at that time and it was not easy to travel there. The country was outstanding, rural and nature astonishing: Soca was one of the most beautiful river in Europe and, let me tell you, in the world. You could fish marbles but also grayling, easily from 45 to 50 cm. But our love was Idrjica, a Soca tributary; for many years, 5-7 times a year, for 3-7 days, I fished only that river with outstanding results. In that period there were many brown trout with marvelous liveries, grayling and rainbow. Some years ago the fishing authority changed its policy and so there are no more rainbow or brown because they hybridize with marble. I think this was ecologically correct but now we can find only few large marble trout, especially in the trophy zone, but nothing else.

Il principio base della costruzione di mosche è l’abilità di un costruttore di imitare un insetto o un piccolo pesce. In sostanza, produrre mosche da salmone non è diverso, visto che consiste nel dare una forma a piume e pelliccia attorno a un amo, con l’intenzione di mimare un pesciolino. Ma c’è di più. Costruire una mosca classica completa è molto impegnativo e arduo, ci vogliono tanta abilità e pazienza, un grande senso dell’estetica e della composizione. Altro non è che arte. Purtroppo non si vedono o incontrano molti costruttori di mosche classiche ai giorni nostri, ma i pochi che ci sono fanno del loro meglio per preservare quest’arte. Uno di loro, molto bravo, è Stefano Farkas, un viticoltore che vive e lavora nella zona del Chianti, in provincia di Firenze: con le sue mani sa creare arte pura. È un vero maestro – le sue mosche sono curate alla perfezione e a guardarle si rimane elettrizzati e ipnotizzati. Stefano è stato lieto di rispondere ad alcune domande per la rivista H2O, di condividere un po’ della sua esperienza e dei suoi pensieri e di fornirci alcune foto dei suoi bellissimi capolavori.

1. Ti ricordi la tua prima esperienza di pesca a mosca?

- Verso la fine degli anni Settanta sono andato per la prima volta a Firenze nel negozio di pesca di Roberto Pragliola, di cui avrai sicuramente sentito parlare. È morto non molto tempo fa e sicuramente è stato uno dei migliori lanciatori al mondo. Io mi sono avvicinato alle tecniche di lancio nel suo retrobottega.

Ovviamente mi sono fatto nuovi amici e anche mio fratello aveva la stessa passione. Con loro ho pescato in molti fiumi non distanti da noi, come il Lima, l’Arno, il Magra, il Nera e altri.

Pian piano abbiamo cominciato ad andare più lontano, su altri

fiumi belli come l’Aveto o il Roia, a Ventimiglia, a circa cinque ore d’auto. Ma il posto che veramente mi ha cambiato la vita è stata la Slovenia, dove sono andato per la prima volta nel 1978.

Era ancora Jugoslavia all’epoca e non era facile andarci. Il Paese era eccezionale, rurale e con una natura strabiliante: Il Soca era uno dei più bei fiumi d’Europa e, permettimi di dire, del mondo.

Ci si pescavano marmorate, ma anche temoli, spesso dai 45 ai 50 cm. Ma il nostro preferito era l’Idrjica, un affluente del Soca: per molti anni, 5-7 volte all’anno per 3-7 giorni, ho pescato solo in quel fiume, con risultati eccezionali. In quel periodo c’erano molte trote fario con meravigliose livree, temoli e trote iridee.

Alcuni anni fa l’autorità di pesca ha cambiato politica e così non ci sono più trote arcobaleno o fario come una volta, perché si sono ibridate con le marmorate. Penso che dal punto di vista ecologico fosse corretto, ma ora possiamo trovare solo poche trote marmorate, specialmente da trofeo, e poco altro. Il fiume ha cominciato a essere famoso, c’erano troppi pescatori e sono spariti anche i temoli. Ma io ho trascorso davvero dei momenti fantastici laggiù e devo dire che ho nostalgia di quel periodo.

G.B. Shaw disse che gli avvocati, i ristoranti e le concubine, quando diventano famosi, costano un sacco di soldi ma non valgono più nulla. Penso che sia lo stesso anche per i fiumi...

Negli anni ho pescato in molti fiumi in tutto il mondo, in America, Svezia, Norvegia, ma non ho mai provato le emozioni di quel periodo.

2. Quando hai cominciato a costruire mosche?

- In quel periodo, al negozio di Pragliola, trovavo solo mosche di Devaux: funzionavano perché le trote non erano molto difficili

G.B.Shaw said that lawyers, restaurants and concubines, when they become famous, they cost a lot of money but they are no longer worth anything. I think it is the same thing for rivers too... In the years I fished many rivers worldwide, in America, Sweden, Norway but never with the same great feeling in that special period.

2. When did you start to tie flies?

- In the above mentioned period, at Pragliola's shop I could only find flies by Devaux: they worked because trout were not so picky without a strong fishermen's pressure, but they were not made with great materials. Devaux's idea to push the hackles in the front conically in my opinion was motivated by the need to use long hackles. I heard from old and experienced fishermen that in the sixties you could go fishing with palmers in three different colours and three different sizes and you could catch a lot of trout during hatches, without refusals... The first good flies I bought were made by Palu, a northern Italian commercial fly tyer. I caught my first 30 cm brown trout in Magra river with a #16 olive made by him. He used to tie in a very classical way: the times of cul de canard were still far away to come... So, for these reasons, and also because of the cost of the flies, starting to tie your own flies became a necessity.

3. How did you become interested in classic flies?

- For many years I tied my trout/grayling flies, improved my skills,

until I started to become interested in salmon fishing: obviously these kinds of patterns were completely different and new for me and the tying methods too. My first approach started with books. One was especially important for me: Paul Jorgensen's " Salmon Flies, Their Character, Style and Dressing", Stackpole books, 1978. Jorgensen has given a beautiful example of salmon flies, also classic ones, but all oriented to fishing purposes.Years ago, in one of my travel as winemaker I took the opportunity to go to Springfield, Mass. to meet Anthony Smith, who is an excellent Classic Salmon fly tyer but he is not a fisherman: he told me he has never caught a fish in all his life.

So why did he choose that job? For Beauty- he said. The second book that influenced me a lot is a milestone of the kind: T.E.Pryce-Tannatt " How to Dress Salmon Flies " published in 1914. With this book I learned many things not only about the style but also about the materials and the correct use of them.

Manipulation is the right word because flies were hand tied at that time, without putting the hook in a vise: very complicated!

But the most important book for me was Michael Radencich "Tying the Classic Salmon Fly, a modern approach to traditional techniques". I was influenced by Radencich's style at the beginning until I developed my own one. In his book I could also admire the flies by tyers like W.Luallen, M.Waslick, Marvin Nolte, Bob Veverka and many others, so my fate was sealed.

4. Do you have some favorite materials and what makes you choose a certain material? How hard is it to find the right materials for classic flies?

Le prime buone mosche che acquistai erano fatte da Palu, un costruttore di mosche commerciali del Nord Italia. Presi la mia prima trota fario da 30 cm nel fiume Magra con una #16 oliva fatta da lui. Lui era solito montarle in un modo molto classico: i tempi del cul de canard erano ancora lungi da venire... Così, per queste ragioni, e anche per il costo delle mosche, cominciare a costruirsi le proprie mosche divenne una necessità.

3. Come è nato il tuo interesse per le mosche classiche?

- Per molti anni ho fatto le mie mosche da trota/temolo e migliorato le mie abilità, finché ho cominciato a interessarmi di pesca al salmone: ovviamente questi tipi di modelli erano completamente diversi e nuovi per me e i metodi di montaggio pure. Il mio primo approccio è cominciato coi libri. Uno è stato

particolarmente importante: "Le mosche da salmone, il loro carattere, stile e dressing" di Paul Jorgensen, Stackpole books, 1978. Jorgensen ha dato un bellissimo esempio di mosche da salmone, anche classiche, ma tutte orientate a fini di pesca. Anni fa, in uno dei miei viaggi come viticoltore, ho colto l’opportunità di andare a Springfield, nel Massachusetts, per incontrare Anthony Smith, che è un eccellente costruttore di mosche classiche da salmone, ma non un pescatore: mi ha detto che non ha mai preso un pesce in vita sua. Perché allora ha scelto quel mestiere? Per la Bellezza – disse. Il secondo libro che mi ha influenzato molto è: "Come fare il dressing delle mosche da salmone" di T.E.Pryce-Tannatt, pubblicato nel 1914.

Con questo libro ho imparato molte cose non solo sullo stile, ma anche sui materiali e il loro corretto uso.Manipolazione è la parola giusta, perché le mosche erano montate a mano a quell’epoca, senza mettere l’amo in una morsa: molto complicato! Ma il libro più importante per me è stato "Costruire la mosca classica da salmone, un approccio moderno alle tecniche tradizionali" di Michael Radencich. Io sono stato influenzato dallo stile di Radencich all’inizio, finché non ho sviluppato il mio. Nel suo libro ho potuto anche ammirare mosche di costruttori come W. Luallen, M. Waslick, Marvin Nolte, Bob Veverka e molti altri,

- I have no favorite materials but there are patterns requiring a certain feather or silk or other things and I am happy if I have the original one. But if I don't, I use a substitute.

I tied many Jock Scotts, the " mother of all classic flies ", but I have never had toucan or indian crow feathers and I have always used substitutes. Certain feathers are now forbidden or they are extremely expensive, so substitutes are a necessity. Finding materials for tying is not easy: years ago there were a lot of fly fishing shops, also in Florence where I lived, selling everything except very rare things but now they are all closed for the internet competition and it's a pity. I personally have another problem: I tie only very big flies, in the size 9/0 - 10/0 Harrison & Bartleet, so I need larger materials. For example an 8 cm. golden pheasant topping is easy to find but 9-10 cm. toppings are very rare and expensive. The most important piece in a classic salmon fly is the hook which must be beautiful- a hook for a classic salmon fly is not a material but an integral part of it.

5. Tying classic flies is a process and it takes devotion. In your own words, what are the most important things when it comes to tying a good or maybe even a perfect classic fly?

- It is obvious that manual skills is needed to tie a good or perfect fly, as you ask, but this is not the most important requirement.

Michael Radencich in a mail wrote to me: sense of balance and proportion. This ability sometimes comes naturally to some people, others never really get it. Balance and proportion, this makes a perfect fly in my opinion too.

6. Could you describe the complexity of tying one of your flies?

How long does it take to tie one perfect pattern?

- We were speaking of manual skills, sense of balance and proportion. When you master these things, no pattern is too complex. However one really difficult thing is always to tie wings in the right way on the hook. I am very slow at tying: I never make a fly all in one go. I work to some details then to another one, after days sometimes.It takes about 8 hours to me to make a complex fly.

7. Is there a pattern you find especially challenging to tie?

- The Jock Scott is not easy to tie.When a tyer makes a beautiful Jock Scott, he can tie any complex fly.

4. Hai dei materiali preferiti o cosa ti fa scegliere un certo materiale? Quanto è difficile trovare i giusti materiali per le mosche classiche?

- Non ho dei materiali preferiti, ma ci sono modelli che richiedono una certa piuma o seta o altre cose e io sono felice se ho l’originale. Ma se non ce l’ho, uso un surrogato.

Ho costruito molte Jock Scott, la "madre di tutte le mosche classiche", ma non ho mai avuto piume di tucano o di corvo indiano, dunque ho sempre usato dei surrogati. Certe piume sono ora vietate o sono estremamente costose, quindi i surrogati sono una necessità. Trovare materiali per la costruzione non è facile: anni fa c’erano un sacco di negozi di pesca a mosca, anche a Firenze dove vivevo, che vendevano tutto, ma ora hanno chiuso tutti in seguito alla concorrenza di internet, ed è un peccato. Io personalmente ho un altro problema: monto solo mosche molto grosse, di dimensioni 9/0 - 10/0 Harrison & Bartleet, dunque ho bisogno di materiali più grandi. Per esempio un topping di fagiano dorato da 8 cm è facile da trovare, ma i topping da 9-10 cm sono molto rari e costosi. Il pezzo più importante in una mosca classica da salmone è l’amo, che deve essere bello – un amo per una mosca classica da salmone non è un materiale, ma parte integrante di essa.

5. Montare le mosche classiche è un processo e richiede devozione. Dimmi con parole tue quali sono le cose più

importanti quando si tratta di costruire una buona o addirittura perfetta mosca classica.

- È ovvio che per costruire una mosca buona o perfetta, come dici tu, servono abilità manuali, ma questo requisito non è il più importante. Michael Radencich in una mail mi scrisse: senso dell’equilibrio e delle proporzioni. Quest’abilità a volte viene naturale ad alcune persone, mentre altre non l’acquisiscono mai davvero. Equilibrio e proporzioni sono anche secondo me ciò che rende una mosca perfetta.

6. Potresti descrivere la complessità di costruire una delle tue mosche? Quanto tempo serve per fare un modello perfetto?

- Stavamo parlando di abilità manuali, senso dell’equilibrio e delle proporzioni. Quando si padroneggiano queste cose, nessun modello è troppo complesso. Comunque, una cosa davvero difficile è sempre costruire le ali nel modo giusto sull’amo. Io sono molto lento nella costruzione: non faccio mai una mosca tutta in una volta. Lavoro ad alcuni dettagli e poi ad altri, talvolta dopo giorni. Mi ci vogliono circa 8 ore per fare una mosca complessa.

7. C’è un modello che trovi particolarmente impegnativo da costruire?

- La Jock Scott non è facile da fare. Se un costruttore fa una bellissima Jock Scott, sa costruire qualsiasi mosca complessa.

Questo è un articolo dove si parla di pesca ma soprattutto si parla del famoso Luis Brown di River Plate Anglers, che ha creato un santuario del Peacock bass nel fiume Marié dell'Amazzonia, luogo che è diventato recentemente come una sorta di ShagriLa dove questi pesci raggiungono dimensioni record. Brown ha un’organizzazione che permette di pescare in queste zone con l’ausilio di "treni fluviali" utilizzati per ospitare i clienti in completo comfort su cinque principali sistemi fluviali nell'area generale di Manaus. This is an article that talks about fishing, but above all about the famous Luis Brown of River Plate Anglers, who created a Peacock bass sanctuary in the Marié River of the Amazon, a place which has recently become a sort of Shangri-La, where these fish reach record sizes. Brown has an organization which allows you to fish in these areas with the help of "river trains," designed to host the clients in complete comfort on five main river systems in the general area of Manaus. Moreover, Luis is very active regarding the protection of these fish, and was among the first to promote fly fishing and catch and release. Brown’s strength is his excellent relations with local populations, who have supported him for a long time and share all conservation projects that he suggests. Furthermore, he works in synergy with government agencies to get the exclusive access to rivers with low fishing activity.

THE SECRET IS HAVING MANY RIVERS AVAILABLE Productive fishing in the Amazon is practiced successfully only in the months with low tides, when 70%/80% of the submerged jungle dries up and the peacock bass and all other species concentrate in only 2-3% of the area. Fortunately, the rivers in the Amazon do not dry up at the same time. In fact, there are four distinct areas based on seasonal rains in a diameter of 1,000 miles of habitat for these fish, in the Amazon basin.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT River Plate Anglers have worked to implement initiatives that make the local communities responsible for their own local resources. Through this long-term preservation policy at a community level, Luis convinced the communities to forbid commercial fishing and helped reduce the quantity of highimpact agriculture which takes place in a number of water bodies. The management has further promoted sustainable

activities such as the production of milk and dairy products, exotic fruit processing, handicraft production of souvenirs, production of fishing baits, and cultivation of organic vegetables that are also used in local tourist facilities. In 2019 these activities brought benefits to 80% of the families in the river communities where Luis works.

It was in the late 1920s that there appeared an angler who had an actual influence on American fly fishing that was greater than Theodore Gordon. The Wulff flies, named by Dan Bailey, have become standard patterns for both trout and salmon, surely among the most important dry-fly development in this century. Wulff developed the first of the flies on New York’s Ausable River for trout in 1929; he was certainly not the first to use hair for wings, but they were the ones that mattered most in the subsequent

popularization of hairwing dry flies. The Wulffs and many other dry flies- Joe Messinger’s Irresistible, Harry Darbee’s Rat-Faced MacDougall, the Bomber - revolutionized salmon fishing on this side of the Atlantic, while dry flies never caught on to any extent in the Old World. Wulff also was a leader in the development of non-traditional wet flies for salmon. His experiments with nymph-type convinced him that they could be as effective as other wet flies. His popularization of the riffling-hitch, a way of attaching leader to fly that allowed the fly to be worked across the surface with a wake often appealing to salmon, added an important technique to the salmon fisher’s bag of tricks. He did

not work alone in these developments- salmon fishing has a list of “hallowed names” almost as long as does trout fishing- but this work was usually in the vanguard. It often was the vanguard in rod selection. He led the fight to reduce the size of salmon rods, in the process becoming a virtuoso at handling fish.

Combining his own exceptional gift for fishing with an almost religious devotion to experimentation, he had a career whose highlights seem to have served as proof that the impossible is possible. His Book “ The Atlantic Salmon” (1958) described how he showed the extent to which rod size could be reduced, also describing one of the most impressive stunts in American

Of course fishermen did not flock to fish without rods, any more than they have flocked to use rods of less than eight feet in length. But Wulff showed what could be done, and strengthened American convictions that rods of ten feet or less were all that were necessary.

Wulff mostrò però cosa può essere fatto e rafforzò la convinzione americana che le canne di dieci piedi, o anche meno, fossero tutto ciò di cui c’era bisogno.

FLYFISHING SHOW It's official, the fly fishing market is recovering.

We realized it at EWF in Germany, undoubtedly the most important fly fishing fair in Europe.

Although in a reduced form due to Covid regulations, the fair did very well, with many more attendances than expected and a lot of interest from exhibitors and visitors. Meeting friends after two years for a beer and to plan some fishing trips was great. Thanks to Michaela and all the EWF staff for a wonderful weekend. The next meeting will be on 2- 3 April 2022 with an edition that promises to be extremely interesting.

I remember that I first packed my luggage when I was about seven.

My overly precocious rebellious nature had given rise to a contest with my mother, who had offered to help me pack my luggage so I could leave.With a napkin on a stick on my shoulder? No, I wanted a well-organised escape. I packed the leather schoolbag with all my Ladybird books as a guide to life. I had told my mother that I wished to live with my grandparents. Later on, I wished to escape from life much more than I did as a child. The urge to explore the world, seek a fortune, and grow physically and mentally while travelling is strong in my family. It has always been like that, and since two generations before me some have emigrated to other places. Every year I promised myself that I would spend more time at home, to arrange this and that. But all my projects were so unimportant compared to a fishing trip, and eventually, they remained nothing but intentions.

Seven degrees south of the equator, 250 miles southwest of Mahe and in the heart of the Indian Ocean – we are on the Alphonse Island. To be more precise, Alphonse Atoll, Bijoutier and St. Francois Atoll, together form the Alphonse group. Alphonse is almost a desert island. The coast is 3.42 miles long and is home to lagoons, seabeds and a population of only 108 inhabitants.

My fellow adventurers are all as old as me: Gordon, Flash, and the GM, the enthusiast of the group.There is little room for bureaucracy here on the atoll. The “roads" around the island are little more than trails through the jungle, in the middle of trees with nature taking center stage. Our small group is made up of fishermen, seekers of comfort and tax evaders.

Historically, the Alphonse atoll was considered as a Mecca for fly fishing in the sea, as it guarantees wide, ample, reserved fishing spaces, skiffs and top guides. There are also excellent diving instructors,but we are more willing to empty the reserves of the bar and relax. We have already been informed that during this travel we will have 99% digital disconnection. The island has satellite phones and wifi, but they are indeed from the 1990s. Therefore, you need patience if you want to send an SMS or load a photo, you must get ready, click on Send, put the phone on the bar, order another drink and after a while your message will probably be sent. My timing is good, and at the second message I am already used to it. This means that I have completely surrendered to the way of life on the island. I have already become a friend of the barman; I understand at once that he can mix almost all spirits known to man. My biggest expense in this travel will be the bill for

If you are sick or lazy, you can cross the island on a motorboat or on a golf buggy, but the population usually uses bikes. Owning a bike becomes a priority after yours has been taken by someone else.

This happens without any malice, but only because, after the third shot of tequila and a second bottle of wine, some of your fellow adventurers get on the first bike they find, which is yours.

The island has 21 private bungalows on the beach and five suites.

The bungalows are situated on the eastern coast of the island, a few meters from the beach. The island is populated by all sorts of wild fauna, including the Aldabra giant tortoises, which wander about on the island. These discreet herbivores live as long as 120 years and can weigh up to 400 kilos. There is one that, at the right moment, stands up and lifts his foreleg like a dog, in return for a neck massage.

The bungalows are well-equipped with all comforts, uniting ecological awareness with first-class service. The facilities were

designed by Florence Masson, a Mauritian decorator that has succeeded in blending luxury and discretion. The bungalows are built on pillars. They have straw roofs, terraces and wonderful outdoor showers. The restaurant, Bijoutier, combines Creole specialities with international cuisine. After a hearty meal and some pretty good bottles of white wine, the director of the lodge take us on the boardwalk to gaze at the stars. Sitting on huge bags of beans, and sipping a decent white sauvignon, we can not be further away from civilization as we know it. Of course, there is wine, good food and air conditioning, but the nice thing about Alphonse is union of sustainability and modernity. The needs of the contemporary world are not completely sacrificed, so as to keep the ecosystem of the island unaltered. Luxuries are offered without causing any damage to the island. The stars would shine even without the beanbag and the sauvignon, but perhaps not so brilliantly… What strikes you here especially is the silence. For a short moment I consider packing everything and moving here. I could live on the less inhabited western side, fish, hunt for food and grow a beard. In such moments you really think about your priorities in life.

Ogni anno mi dico che passerò più tempo a casa, sistemerò questo e quest’altro, ma tutti i miei progetti sono così poco importanti rispetto ad un viaggio di pesca che alla fine rimangono solo intenzioni.

Ci sono anche ottimi istruttori per fare immersioni, noi però siamo più intenzionati a vuotare le riserve del bar e a rilassarci. Siamo già stati informati che questo viaggio avrà una disconnessione digitale del 99%.

L'isola ha telefoni satellitari e wifi, ma sono effettivamente degli anni '90, quindi se vuoi inviare un SMS o caricare una foto, ci vuole pazienza, ti organizzi , premi invio, posizioni il telefono sul bar, ordini un altro drink e dopo un po’ è probabile che il tuo messaggio sia stato inviato. Il mio timing è buono, al secondo messaggio mi sono già adattato, che vuol dire arrendersi completamente al modo di vivere dell'isola. Sono già amico

del barista, ho capito subito che può mescolare quasi tutti i superalcolici conosciuti dall'uomo. La mia più grande spesa di questo viaggio su questa isola è stato il conto delle bevande. Sì, sono un alcolista altamente funzionante.

Se sei malato o pigro puoi attraversare l’isola su un motoscafo o su un buggy da golf, ma la popolazione in generale usa le bici. Il possesso di una bicicletta diventa una priorità dopo che la tua è stata presa da un altro. Questo capita senza nessuna cattiveria, ma solo perché dopo il terzo giro di tequila e una seconda bottiglia di vino, qualcuno dei tuoi amici di avventura è salito sulla prima bici che ha trovato, la tua.

Certo, c'è vino, buon cibo e aria condizionata, ma la cosa bella di Alphonse è il connubio tra sostenibilità e modernità. I bisogni del mondo contemporaneo non sono completamente sacrificati per mantenere l'ecosistema dell'isola. I lussi vengono offerti senza causare alcun danno all'isola. Le stelle avrebbero brillato altrettanto luminose senza il beanbag e il sauvignon, ma forse un po’ meno… Ciò che qui ti colpisce è soprattutto il silenzio. Per un breve momento prendo in considerazione l'idea di imballare tutto e trasferirmi qui. Potrei vivere sul lato ovest meno abitato, pescare, cacciare cibo e farmi crescere la barba. Sono i momenti in cui ripensi seriamente a riordinare le priorità della tua vita.
