The Flint Institute of Arts - Expansion Project Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, Flint has been a community of craftspeople. From carriages to cars, generations of skilled trades workers have invented, innovated, and embraced new technology encouraged creativity, making Flint the perfect city for an art school and museum. With a nod to the past and an eye on the future, the addition of the Contemporary Craft Wing, along with the new Hot Shop and Makerspace, allows the Flint Institute of Arts to continue its tradition of offering lifelong learning opportunities that are a natural extension of the skills and interests of its community. FIA Executive Director John Henry agrees: "This project provides exhibition and demonstration space that integrates a finished work of art with the process of how it's made. The expanded Art School space allows us to provide studio classes for all ages, live demonstrations, and visiting artist workshops in glassblowing, flamework, metal casting, and wheel throwing." The gallery expansion will accommodate the recently gifted Dr. Robert and Deanna Harris Burger Collection of Contemporary Ceramics and the Sherwin and Shirley Glass Collection of Contemporary Glass, on permanent loan to the FIA through the generosity of the Isabel Foundation. Noted Henry, "These two collections contain works from some of the foremost ceramic and glass artists worldwide. We know these additions will create an unparalleled resource in both Michigan and the region, offering an in-depth look at Contemporary Craft, highlighted by a variety of important pieces emerging over the past 60 years." The Flint Institute of Arts is looking forward to your visit during the 46th.
