Dave Atkinson first became interested in photography when he visited his grandparents and was given a couple of broken bellows cameras to play with. He never actually took pictures with them but enjoyed playing with them and the seed was sewn. The first camera used was a “Halina Paulette”, which his parents gave him for a birthday present. It had a fixed lens and used 35mm film so he had to get use to selecting apertures and shutter speed etc., as well as focussing. His subjects were mainly portraits of family and friends with occasional forays into athletics and other sports and also animals in zoos and safari parks. The latter giving him an early interest in a genre which he much later went back too.
Dave Atkinson, fotoğrafla ilk olarak büyükanne ve babasının ona oynaması için kırık dökük körüklü bir fotoğraf makinesi vermesiyle tanıştı. İlk fotoğraflarını elbette onunla çekmedi ama fotoğrafa dair ilk tohumları belki de bu sayede atıldı. Kullandığı ilk kamera, ailesinin ona doğum günü hediyesi olarak aldığı bir “Halina Paulette” oldu. Bu sabit lensli ilk makinesinde 35mm filmler kullandı, bu nedenle diyafram açıklığı ve deklanşör hızı seçmenin yanı sıra odaklamaya alışması gerekiyordu. Genellikle ailesi ve arkadaşlarını çekse de zaman zaman atletizm, çeşitli spor gösterilerini, safari parkları ve hayvanat bahçesindeki hayvanları da fotoğraflıyordu.
