Higher Education in Pakistan Institutions of higher education are responsible for laying the foundations of just, democratic societies. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s limited resources have been allocated largely to primary and vocational education, with the result that deep-rooted problems in the nation’s higher education system have so far gone largely unaddressed.
The challenges – which include shortage of world-class faculty, lack of creativity in educational practices and research, and widespread use of passive methods of learning and teaching – have hindered the country’s progress and limited its development potential. Compared to countries in the region, which spend much larger proportions of their GDP on higher education (like India and China), Pakistan lags considerably on indicators of both human development and higher education quality.

The Inspiration for Habib University Habib University was founded on the conviction that private investment in higher education can have a transformational impact on Pakistan’s human and institutional capacities. We are the first of its kind liberal arts and sciences university in Pakistan, with programs designed specifically to address the myriad development challenges faced by the nation. Through an interdisciplinary core curriculum bringing together science, engineering, arts, humanities and social sciences, we enable students to develop critical understanding necessary to solve contemporary societal and scientific challenges. Academics: The programs in both schools integrate theory and practice, in classrooms, labs, as well as through field-based practice. All students take 11 classes in the Habib Core component based on 7 forms of thought to cultivate their critical, thoughtful and wellarticulated understanding of the world.

“Pakistan is at a critical juncture in its history. While it is necessary to evolve out of the postcolonial heritage, there is a large untapped opportunity to engage our youth with broader knowledge and experiences for self-cultivation, respect for both heritage and future, and a commitment to service and excellence.

Students
At Habib University, all talented students are guaranteed access to an outstanding education. Our admissions policy is needs-blind, thus we provide a range of scholarships and financial aid options to put world-class education within each admitted student’s reach. With support from our donors, more than 90% of our students currently receive some form of financial assistance. Our student body represents a rich diversity of cultural, social, religious, and economic backgrounds, and we empower each student to reach their full potential through a range of academic support and student life programs. Giving in this area always has an outsized impact. For less than the cost of educating one student for four years at a comparable world class university, donors can create a Scholarship Endowment at Habib University for $ 120,000 that lasts up to 16 years and helps at least four students cover their full tuition. Full-Cycle Scholarships for four years can be set up with a gift of $40,000.

Academic Centers Habib University has already established four independent academic centers with the aim of bridging the disconnect between academic discussion and practical application of knowledge. For example, one center focuses on scholarship in vernacular languages; another promotes research and action on key development challenges facing South Asia. These centers also provide a unique platform in Karachi for discursive engagement, entrepreneurship, and capacity development with a broad range of stakeholders from industry to public decision makers. You can support our Academic Centers by funding various projects, visiting faculty and research that help create new knowledge and advance technology, art and understanding of our society as well as of global issues.
