Maffeo Sutton Inclusive Playground Opens June 22, 2020 NEWS RELEASE NANAIMO.CA
Summary The Maffeo Sutton Inclusive Playground opened on Thursday, June 18. The project, a partnership between The City of Nanaimo, Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, Nanaimo Child Development Centre, Tire Stewardship of BC and other community organizations, brought Nanaimo’s first inclusive playground to reality. The newly installed equipment is not only inclusive for all members of the community, but it will help to improve motor, cognitive and social skills through active play. As part of the improvements, the playground got improved safety surfacing made out of recycled tires, as well as the pea gravel being replaced with wood fibre. Both of these surfaces not only improve safety but allow those with
mobility challenges easier and improved access throughout the area. Another exciting feature of the playground includes First Nations art pieces created by local artist, Noel Brown. Through his art and the design of the space, a story unfold that depicts life along the Millstone River with Coho salmon. The City of Nanaimo announced Monday that Maffeo Sutton Park’s new accessible playground is now open. The playground includes “safety surfacing” made out of recycled tires, noted a press release, and wood fibre replaces the pea gravel. The playground also incorporates First Nations art pieces created by local artist Noel Brown and inspired by the nearby Millstone River. New Inclusive Playground Opens at Maffeo Sutton Park June 22, 2020 BY IAN HOLMES NANAIMO NEWS NOW NANAIMO — A much-anticipated inclusive playground at Maffeo Sutton Park in downtown Nanaimo is now open for excited children and their caregivers. The City officially unveiled the new infrastructure virtually during a special council meeting on Monday, June 22. The new playground features soft, mobility-friendly surfacing and socially and physically inclusive amenities to improve motor, cognitive and social play for users. There’s an accessible bucket zip line and merry-go-round which accommodates wheelchairs, among numerous pieces of equipment. It replaces the older playground near the Frank Ney statue in the park.
