Hadleigh's History on your doorstep
At first glance, this post Second World War view in Hadleigh is difficult to recognise. The view is looking towards Cox Corner, but now, a term that is largely forgotten. This is Calais Street looking towards its junction with the High Street and Bridge Street. The sign shown centrally is the present entrance to Meadows Way. The prominent white building alone survives to this day. At the right is a concrete pillbox, one of the ten pillboxes built from June 1940 to help defend the town which had been identified as a Nodal Point requiring extra defences. There was a further pillbox nearby in Bridge Street by the Iron Bridge.

It was from the latter years of the 20th century which saw the town begin to change with an increasing population, different employment opportunities, and changes to some of its building, as graphically shown in this photograph.
