OUR FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR IS HERE!
O CTO B ER H APPENI NG S AT HA IG POINT
Happeningsfrom theChief Dear Members, Family and friends enjoyed another great holiday during Labor Day weekend. We had a Bocce Bash, a lobster boil and a couples’ golf event. On September 23, Haig Point hosted the LoCo Motion Walk for Breast Cancer welcoming approximately 1000 walkers and runners. Since its inception in 2011, LoCo Motion has donated more than $200,000 to local cancer patient services. Thank you to every member and volunteer who participated in making this a great event. As mentioned in my September CEO Update Letter, there have been a few changes to the Food and Beverage Department. Ian Pyne, Haig Point’s Banquet Manager, accepted a position at a club outside of Atlanta. Ian provided notable service to the Club and will be missed by members and staff alike. We welcome two Haig Point staff members to the Department. “Bunny” Swaby has accepted the position DOUG EGLY Chief Executive Officer as Banquet and Beverage Manager. Bunny has been with us for six years. And, Shemeica East has accepted the positon of Assistant to the Food and Beverage Director. Shemeica is returning to F&B after doing a great job as Member Services Supervisor. In amenities, October will be a busy month for Haig Point golfers. We have the Ladies’ Invitational Golf Tournament, the Mixed Invitational and lastly the Men’s and Women’s Club Championships. In addition, our 6.5 tennis team, the Haig Point Herons, will compete in the South Carolina State Combo Championship. After State, we will gear up for our annual club championship. A property owner’s meeting will be held on October 3 to present a long-term ferry solution. Again, I urge everyone to attend this meeting when the ferry plan will be presented in detail. The plan addresses essential repairs and maintenance of our fleet including Coast Guard mandated Tier 3 engines; bottom plate repairs; new electronics; and interior and exterior restoration. The plan also addresses overdue structural improvement and repairs to the floating docks. The 15+ year funding solution will create a reserve to ensure we can purchase new boats in the future. It will move our ferry service from a break and fix model to a preventative maintenance model. The ferry system is essential to the community’s transportation, but it also places Haig Point in an extraordinary class of communities unique to few. Ferry rides are part of the magic of living on an island without a bridge. The boats can be a meeting place for members or simply a quiet interval on the Calibogue Sound. Thank you all for being part of this special place we call home.

GOLF “TIP OF THE MONTH” We hear many golfers complain about their green-side bunker games. They have trouble getting out of the bunkers or they hit the ball thin and knock it over the green. Bunker shots, once you have learned the proper technique, can be one of the easier shots in the game. The first thing we do at address is to make sure we have more of our weight on our front foot and not sitting back on your back foot. Next, you will want to have the face of your wedge slightly open in order to use more of the bounce of the club which helps the club slide underneath the ball easier. Lastly, you want to have a slightly steep angle of attack down into the ball (instead of shallow) so the club gets underneath the ball and allows the sand to throw the ball out onto the green. Remember to keep the club moving through the shot with a proper follow through, not stopping the club shortly after contact with the sand. These helpful tips along with a lesson from one of the golf staff professionals will help you get your bunker play back on track.
MIXED INVITATIONAL Wednesday, October 20 - 22 The field is almost full as we currently have 23 teams registered. Please contact the Golf Shop if you have interest in participating. Note that the Signature course will be closed for all other play during this event. The Osprey 9 will remain open for non-tournament play during this time.
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS October 29 - 30 Entry Fee: $35 per player (Includes: prizes, flight trophies, and Awards luncheon on Sunday) Format: 36-hole stroke play event for all flights. All of the men’s flights will be based on gross scores only. The women’s 18 and 9 hole flights will award gross and net winners!! This is the weekend to come out and showcase your game and compete against other members in the club with similar handicaps. The Club Championship is open to all skill levels and the field will be pre-flighted by handicap.

HowWeGot Here
Bob and Susan Copty Susan and I have spent all of our married life in Roanoke, Virginia, a small city in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were blessed to be able to raise our two sons, Jake and Michael, there and to enjoy the beauty and friendliness of that area. I was in the commercial real estate business and Susan was in accounting and ended her career as the business manager for an independent school. As the boys grew up and moved on, it became time to think about what we would do in retirement.
It was a quiet Sunday so when we came off the green on #5, we paused to sit in the Adirondack chairs and marvel at the view – we were hooked! We bought our lot three months later and finished our house at the end of 2011. During those intervening 3 years, we came over from Sea Pines often – commuting or staying in the Mansion. From our first visit, Rowan and Francine always remembered our names and made us feel welcome, as did so many members and staff as time went on. Susan would spend hours “outside the gate” exploring the island – I am still amazed at all the paths and hidden gems she knows how to find!
Our introduction to the Low Country was in 1975 when Susan’s parents bought a second home in Sea Pines. Over the years we would visit and grow to love the lifestyle, the weather, the water, and the coastal beauty. As we were able to spend more and more time “on vacation” at their Sea Pines home, we decided to look around for our own place.
Haig Point and Daufuskie were what we were looking for and more. Ours has been the ultimate Low Country experience. The never-ending beauty, unbelievable nature, the connectedness of the community - each is a joy to experience every day. We have made great friends and fond memories and enjoy being a part of the community in so many ways. Being able to share all of this with our boys, their friends, and our friends elsewhere is even more of a bonus. We have extended the time we spend here from an expected 3–4 months a year to 7 or 8 months – not yet enough!
We knew about Daufuskie Island. We had even come over to play golf at Melrose once but never considered living here. The place seemed too remote – ride a boat every time we needed groceries?? Crazy!! So we looked at a number of developments on and off Hilton Head. Nice places but they could have been anywhere – no capture of the coastal feeling. We wanted more – and without a daily Route 278 experience!
Knowing absolutely no one here when we made the decision to buy, we often say to each other, “Who knew? Who knew that, in our 60s, we would make such dear friends and truly have such a special second life?” We are so lucky to be a part of this magical place!
Our first introduction to Haig Point was over the Fourth of July, 2008. We had played many of the area golf courses and were looking for something different. The golf pro at Sea Pines Country Club recommended Haig Point as a participating summer reciprocal and we were set up for a superb adventure.
As an aside, it’s evening. I walked down our bridge at the end of Beach Road. The sound is calm, tide going out and... a dolphin leaps, full body, out of the water. Who knew??

Dear Members,
Message From Membership
We have great momentum moving into October with ten Discovery Experiences booked. Compared with 2015, we are well on our way to tripling the number of Discovery potential members by the end of the year. In September and October, there were six closings including a National Member who recently became a property owner and a Signature Full Golf Member. Thank you to members who have responded to PERX (Program for an Exceptional Referral Experience) by sending in contact information for prospects. Remember - the greatest number of prospects who become members to a community result from referrals. We all know or have met someone who would be interested in our unique lifestyle. Details on the program can be found on the homepage of the member website. If you haven’t met Adam Martin, our new Director of Marketing, please stop by the Membership Cottage to introduce yourself and welcome him to the team. Adam has hit the ground running and is very excited to be part of Haig Point.
The Affiliate Club Golf Invitational scheduled for September has been rescheduled to the spring. To promote more participation in the program, Adam and I are working on a specific marketing approach for each affiliate club. Scheduled this month, we have affiliate golfers coming down to participate in Stay and Play packages. Please welcome new members: Carol and Richard Monahan (Signature Full Golf) from Bluffton, SC; Erin and Mike O’Sullivan (National) from Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Lisa and Alan DeSantis, referred by Debbie and Reagan Hull (Signature Full Golf) from Dallas, TX; and Lisa and Kevin Cross (Signature Full Golf) from Sacramento, CA. Thank You!

Water Aerobics at Haig Point Water Aerobics Class – Names From left to right Sarah Absher, Carole Rizzo-Baum, Jim Stevens, Margaret Mateljan, Klaus Birkenstaedt, and Paulette Hinchey
A few years ago, a few members decided they wanted to practice water aerobics, with typical Haig Point determination they made it happen. Now, approximately five years later, there are more than three times as many participants. Ten to twenty members meet at the adult pool every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 11 am – 12 pm.
typical class might include water walking to warm up; bicycling, kick boxing and jumping jacks to burn calories; and knees to chest and slalom skiing to work the abs. The last part of the class focuses on strength building using water weights and noodles. All necessary equipment is provided by the club. You do not need to know how to swim to participate.
Barb Heenan and Bill De Leo, who have been leading the classes for the past two years, are excited about the enthusiasm and commitment of participants who range in ages from 20 – 90 years old.
To inspire motivation, Bill and Barb regularly add new routines and water weight exercises. Next year they are considering adding an advanced class.
Water aerobics is recognized as an effective way for people of all ages to incorporate aerobics and muscle-strengthening into their exercise schedule. It has the same benefits as regular aerobic workouts while reducing the risk of muscle or joint injury. According to Barb, “Water aerobics is fun because we do exercises underwater that simulate other sports such as cycling, jogging and cross-country skiing.” A
Participating in group exercise creates a synergy that makes it more inspiring and fun. And social, after the class members often gather for lunch at the Clubhouse patio or enjoy being served poolside. Classes will be held as long as weather permits hopefully through October and into November. Sign up now and give it a try while we are still enjoying warm weather.
