FROM THE CHIEF
DOUG EGLY Chief Executive Officer
I
t is Spring again and the warmer weather always turns my attention to wellness and fitness. Holiday cookies give way to bike rides and long winter naps turn into jogs on the beach. Because I am not the only one fretting about summer swimsuits, this month’s issue of the Happenings will feature our Health, Wellness and Recreation Amenities and Programs. I welcome you to participate in our expanded Wellness Programming, led by Marc and Caroline White of Marline89 LLC. I encourage you to enjoy our pools, fitness center and Equestrian Program. Of course, playing golf and tennis are also fun exercise opportunities. No matter how you choose to move, I wish you a healthy and fit spring. With the many changes and exciting projects on our Club’s horizon, I want to encourage you to bring forward suggestions and questions and keep direct lines of communication open. Every Member has a voice and I remain committed to hearing you.

LET'S GET PHYSICAL Haig Point teams up with Marline89 to offer new Wellness & Recreation Programs
The recent trend towards healthier, active lifestyles has hit our island hard and Haig Point has noticed. Membership has grown recently in the younger age brackets and families with and without children are looking for fun activities to keep them fit and healthy throughout the year. With that in mind, Haig Point has partnered with Marline89 LLC (operated by members Marc & Caroline White) to administer new programs in several key areas.
page | 6
Marline89 has been operating Children’s & Adult camps and Sports Programs for the past 6 years in New England, Panama & Florida. Before Marline89, Marc & Caroline owned and operated Kutsher’s Sports Academy, one of the most popular children’s camps in the country, for over 25 years. Caroline is certified as a Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Zumba Dance Instructor and has over 30 years of experience in teaching fitness & health. Many members (over 100!) have been participating during the past two years in Fuskie Fit, Fuskie Zumba, and Fuskie Yoga- weekly exercise classes that have been offered in the Helmus Center. While all three will remain on the calendar, there will now be additional seasonal offerings throughout the year to give healthy & fun options to all members. A combination hike/workout class called “Walk, Talk & Tone” has already begun on Wednesday afternoons and this will be supplemented by a “Butts & Guts” class every other Wednesday. A beach volleyball weekly event has been planned to begin in the Spring (just before Happy Hour at the Calibogue Beach!) and Children’s Sports programs, as well as a revamped Children’s Day Camp this summer, are all on the agenda. Add to this seasonal Bocce Tournaments, a little 3 on 3 Basketball, and occasional Team Tennis & Trivia nights and hopefully you have something for everybody! All classes and events can be found and registered for on the calendar on the website or the app. We hope that you will join in and feel that healthy glow throughout the year while having fun with your fellow members participating in these programs!

FROM THE KITCHEN
You'll notice some new ingredients featured on our spring menus. The Culinary Team is incorporating these items not only for thier fantastic flavors but also for thier health benefits. Black Garlic – Black garlic is an aged form of garlic that was first used in Korean cuisine. Very low heat is applied to whole unpeeled cloves for about 6 weeks, until the garlic develops a sweeter, less pungent taste and turns a dark black color. Black Garlic has a higher antioxidant content the regular garlic, and its milder flavor allows for people to experience the health benefits of garlic without its strong flavor. Snapper – Snapper refers to family of fish with several varieties prized for their taste, and texture. They are a firm, yet moist and tender fish with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. The best known variety is the Red Snapper, typically found off the coast of Florida. Several varieties of snapper are found off the coast of South Carolina, including mutton, cubera, b-liner, and lane snapper. Snapper is a lean fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids. PAN-SEARED SNAPPER + MIXED GREEN SALAD WITH BLACK GARLIC SESAME DRESSING Serves 2-3
Black Garlic Sesame Dressing: 3-4 cloves black garlic ¼ cup plain yogurt 1 tbsp. lime juice 1 tbsp. soy sauce 1 tsp. sesame oil 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp. honey ¼ cup parsley - finely chopped 1 tbsp. sesame seeds ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
Snapper: 1 lb. Snapper filet 1 tbsp. olive oil Zest of one lemon Salt & pepper Salad: 1 package mixed greens ½ English cucumber – ½ inch cubes 1 red bell pepper – julienned, ¼ in thick 1 carrot - shredded ¼ cup cilantro, roughly chopped ¼ cup toasted cashews Marinated Radish: 8 radishes – rinsed, tops trimmed, quartered 1 lime – juice & zest 1 tsp. red wine vinegar ¼ cup parsley – finely chopped 2 tbsp. olive oil Salt & pepper
Combine lemon juice, zest and olive oil and pour over snapper, making sure entire fish is coated with marinade. Let rest in refrigerator until ready to cook. For the radish, combine all ingredients and allow to marinate for 30 minutes. For the dressing, combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until combined, be sure to break up black garlic. . Combine mixed greens, cucumber, carrots, bell pepper, & cilantro in mixing bowl. Heat a pan over medium high heat. Add salt & pepper to the fish, place in pan skin side down. Sear until outer edges brown and skin is crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Flip the fish, lower the heat to medium. Continue to cook the fish for 3-4 minutes, or until done. Add dressing to bowl with salad and gently mix to coat. Transfer salad to plates & top with toasted cashews & marinated radish. Place cooked snapper on plate and serve.

GOLF
THE UPRIGHT HYBRID CHIP SHOT - Jay Garrick, PGA, Director of Golf The Grip In this particular shot it is imperative that the grip secures the wrists and does not allow any wrist movement during the swing motion. I always found in chipping that the reverse overlap putting grip works best for this purpose regardless of a traditional chipping set up, or the “Upright Hybrid Chip!” The Stance The stance for this shot becomes very narrow (feet are relatively close), with the ball positioned in the middle. Posture should feel very tall at address, the shaft very upright almost straight up and down, and the elbows bent as if you were putting. The Swing The swing motion is very simular to the putting stroke. I like to think of this like pendulum of a clock, straight back and straight through. One great thing about this shot is it does not require much of a back swing as the ball typically comes off very hot (fast). Continued next page

Jay’s Thoughts: All of us get a bit nervous chipping around the greens especially on a tight lie. The nice thing about using a hybrid is the sole of the club is so wide that it will always bounce across the ground/grass and move the ball forward, even on a bad swing. The traditional way with an iron can lead to the disastrous “chili dip”, advancing the ball only a couple of inches. This chipping styles requires some practice time like all things in golf, learning how to control the speed will take time. Once you master this chipping style it may become your favorite shot! Join us for a short game clinic and we will show you the ropes!

WHAT'S IN A NAME According the to U.S.A. Pickleball Association, the origins of the name differs between different accounts. Joel Pritchard’s wife, Joan, started to call their game pickleball because “the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.” But according to Barney McCallum, they named the game after Pritchard’s dog, who was (as you might’ve guessed) named Pickles! Despite the sour taste of actual pickles, their dog was sweet and known to run off with the ball while it was still being played! Depending on who you ask, both accounts of the game’s name may actually be true. At the start, there wasn’t any name for pickleball until an official one was needed when the game started to gain traction. With the laid-back nature of pickleball, it’s only appropriate that it was named in a similar fashion.

HORSES AND HUMAN HEALTH: The Physical and Mental Benefits of Riding Almost everyone is aware of the many health benefits of owning a pet, but most often we think of small animals. Dogs, cats, rabbits and even reptiles have been known reduce stress and offer companionship, which can help lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety or depression. It’s easy to see why we love our fur babies! But what about larger animals like horses? Not only do they offer a similar sense of companionship that can benefit our mental health, but the physical perks of riding and working with our equine friends are extremely rewarding as well. Is horseback riding a sport? Doesn’t the horse do all the work? These are questions that both competitive and recreational riders alike get asked on a regular basis, and they never cease to amaze us. Of course it’s easy for non-riders to see the incredible amount of athleticism that the horse exhibits while in motion, but

BOATING + OUTDOOR NEWS
INVASIVE PLANTS: THE PRICE OF BEAUTY When non-native or exotic invasive plants are introduced to an area and have no natural predators, they can displace native species. Many of these were intentionally brought to southeastern North America as ornamentals from other continents. While they often have attractive flowers, foliage, or fruit, “invasives” disrupt natural ecosystems, wildlife food sources and habitats, water flow, and soil health. Invasive exotic plants may also produce lots of seeds and spread them into woodlands. Some examples are Bradford pear, privet, wisteria, and Chinese elm. Others produce a thick canopy and shade out native species or substances that prevent seed germination (kudzu and tallow tree). Beauty alone should not be the only justification for selecting a plant for the landscape. Studies have shown that birds need a lot of insects to feed and fledge their chicks, with at least 70% native vegetation. Native shrubs, vines, and trees support insects, such as adults and larvae of beetles, butterflies, moths, ants, and flies. Certain insects depend on native flora as hosts for the larval stage and the berries and seeds for adults. Food webs depend on plants for energy, oxygen, and carbohydrates. Decomposing leaves build soil; the leaf litter and humus are essential to the microbes that recycle those nutrients.
