Happenings from the Chief DOUG EGLY

Chief Executive Officer

Last month I resumed hosting Breakfast with the CEO in the Grill Room. These sessions are an opportunity to meet with me in a more personal setting. The group is limited to eight guests which allows me to spend more time on each participant’s specific topics. Please look for invitations to arrive periodically via email.

Dear Member What a wonderful 4th of July we had with the rain clearing just in time to celebrate. Again this year, we had many family and friends join us for the holiday. Four hundred and eighty rounds of golf were scheduled between Friday, June 30 and Friday, July 7 and we had 1,400 members and guests attend the various dining events. The water slides were enjoyed by children and adults alike as was viewing the Harbour Town fireworks. An endless number of carts lined up along the beach road. A dozen golf carts participated in the Golf Cart Parade with several decorated in our nation’s red, white and blue. Indeed, how fortunate we are to live in this great country, and equally, to live at Haig Point, a world apart from all others. In July we published our second coffee table issue of the Happenings which features a very informative piece on Daufuskie history. These special issues are printed quarterly and always include an article on life on Daufuskie. A special thanks to Lauren Hunt, Marketing Coordinator, for putting together such a great July Happenings.

How fortunate we are to live in this great country, and equally, to live at Haig Point, a world apart from all others. Golf course aerification is producing remarkable results and we have received much positive feedback. Whether you golf or not, we all benefit from the beautiful condition of the grounds. Thank you to the entire Golf Course Maintenance & Grounds team for producing such a notable improvement. In closing, I would like to thank our very dedicated Board who continues volunteering its time in leading our club and community toward stability and growth. Doug Egly, CEO

WHY THE AERIFICATION PROCESS Aerification achieves three important objectives, the GCSAA explains: • I t relieves soil compaction; • It provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green's roots; • A nd it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Over time, the traffic from golfer's feet (as well as mowing equipment) tends to compact the soil under the putting green. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. Without oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die.

HOW THE HAPPENS

AERIFICATION

PROCESS

Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. In most cases, it's done by removing halfinch cores from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water that brings a resurgence of growth. The spaces are then filled with sand "topdressing" that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward. Older greens often are constructed of soils with significant amounts of silt, clay and fine organic particles that are prone to compaction. Filling aerification holes with sand improves drainage and resists compaction. The periodic introduction of

sand to a green's top layer can, over time, avoid or postpone expensive rebuilding or renovation of greens. Finally, growing of turf adds to a layer of organic matter on the surface. This layer, called thatch, is an accumulation of dead stems, leaves and roots. A little organic matter makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects. Topdressing with sand can prevent thatch buildup, and aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing layer and prevent an excess of thatch from becoming established.

GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH "Use Your Body For Power" Every good golfer knows that power comes from the body, not the arms. To learn to power the club with your body instead of your arms and hands, put the club behind the ball at address, with your body in a deadstop position. Without taking a backswing, try to drag the ball into the air.

WIMBLEDON ROUND ROBIN

Many of us did not get across the pond to Wimbledon this year but our annual event was a delightful alternative. One of our most popular events, the event was held on Friday, July 7 and was a great hit. The white-clad players enjoyed great tennis and delicious traditional strawberries, waffles and cream.

Equestrian

W

ith fall just around the corner, it means cooler weather for riding and equestrian sports! We are excited to host our second Schooling Show of the year at the Equestrian Center sometime between October and November (date to be announced). This past May, despite the pouring rain, our riders here at the barn did an amazing job representing our equestrian program with several first, second and third placings against Oldfield Equestrian Center. Our very own Olivia Schmitt took Reserve Champion for highest points earned in combined classes! For those of you unfamiliar with the horse showing world, schooling shows are a great way to practice showmanship and give both spectator and rider a taste of what competing is like in the equestrian

sports. Although the rain made our Spring Show unfriendly for spectating, we would love to members present in the fall to cheer on our riders as they compete against neighboring clubs. We are immensely proud to have such a great team of equestrians representing Haig Point and demonstrating true sportsmanship and horsemanship. We look forward to seeing everyone for the next competition! Just as a reminder, we are offering Ride 'N Wine evenings throughout the summer and fall. Please check the calendar for dates. For pricing and information on our services, please call 843-341-8191 or e-mail, rallen@haigpoint.com.
