are due January 5, 2017. We have a great group running for the three seats that will be available. You all had a chance to meet the candidates on November 18. A recording of the session is on the website along with each candidate’s picture and profile. Please take the time to review all so you are well prepared to cast your vote.

Dear Member We welcomed FEMA through the back gate on November 10, 2016. Thank you to all who helped us achieve the approval of disaster debris removal from our roads. Members continued working hard throughout November on the clean-up effort, others donated lunches, and many contributed thousands of dollars toward the purchase of a bobcat. Thank you, thank you, thank you. There is no doubt that this disaster brought our community

We have all been "dealing" with lots of trees the last month! Most of us have a forest in our own back yards. One tree, The Southern Live Oak, is known for its superior wind resistance. Oak trees represent about 400 species worldwide. In North America about 90 species are recognized and over 40 species can be found in the southeast. The grand old tree of the Deep South is the majestic Live Oak. Often seen draped in Spanish Moss, the Live Oak is the iconic tree of the south. Why "live" oak? Because, this oak is evergreen and retains its leaves through winter and for weeks after new leaves emerge in the spring. Besides staying evergreen and being wind resistant, other attributes are: grows rapidly when young, can live for centuries, adapts to most soil types, tolerates salt spray and their acorns are the top food choice for many birds, squirrels, and deer. Check out several of our beautiful Live Oaks surrounding the fountain near the Lighthouse. They have been recognized as "having lived here at the time of the signing of our Constitution." Making them well over 200 years old! Sadly, we did lose some Live Oaks due to the storm. Please consider planting a new one, to pass on its beauty for centuries to come.

performance. Parents, teachers, and members alike are blessed by the wide-eyed joy of these Christmas-time children.

DEC EM B ER HAPPENI NG S | HA I G P OIN T A few weeks later Daufuskie holds its Christmas Parade and some of these same children can be seen waving at the crowds from their school float, or from a decorated tractor, a decorated horse, or a decorated bike or scooter. In fact, scooters are a reminder of tough times past and a sweet Christmas. That year the island’s Christmas angel made sure every child on Daufuskie had a Christmas present – scooters for the ones who were old enough and tricycles for the younger!

Like the Thanksgiving community pot luck dinner, the Christmas parade speaks loudly about the heart of Daufuskie. Everyone feels the love. There is a Santa chair that has the names of each Santa who ever ho-ho’d from upon his seat in the parade. There’s an old wagon that carries any kid who wants to ride in the parade and doesn’t have a float or bicycle. There’s the Christmas list (compiled by the teachers at the two-room school house) that tells Santa’s shoppers what each child would especially enjoy. There are the elves that help wrap the presents and then, of course, there is Santa who actually delivers the presents on Christmas Eve.

As Haig Point members, we live in a special community on a magical island with extended families here and in all parts of the world. We have been and will probably continue to be Santa’s shoppers or his elves for a long time to come. May we close Haig Point’s thirtieth anniversary year with renewed appreciation for what we have and who we are as island residents, challenged by Matthew, and living joyously in the Christmas spirit ever after. This year, the Daufuskie Christmas parade takes place on December 17.

Do you find yourself walking off more than two greens a round shaking your head because you just 3-putted? Is it because you are missing many short putts? If so, here is a great tip to help improve your putting and improve your golf scores. The tip is to use an alignment aid on your golf ball. If you will notice the Tour Professionals when they putt, it seems they are always lining up their ball a certain way when placing it down to putt; that is because they are using some type of line on their ball that helps them line the ball up and start the ball on the line they wish to start their putt on. You can use wording that is already on the ball or you can draw a line on your ball. If you will consistently use this practice every time you putt, I promise you will begin to improve your putting and make more putts. Come see a member of the Golf Staff to help you with any part of your game!

HAIG POINT AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The South Carolina State Combo Championship was held in November on Hilton Head Island and as usual, Haig Point was well-represented. Debbie Hull was a member of a team that won one of the state titles, winning 65+, 7.5 division.

DEC EM B ER HAPPENI NG S | HA I G P OIN T REINDEER ROUND ROBIN Our annual benefit for the Deep Well Fund will be held on Friday, December 9 from 10:00 - 12:00 at the Haig Point Tennis Center. The entry fee will be minimum $20.00 donation to the Deep Well Fund. Be sure to bring your favorite Christmas cookies for the cookie exchange following the tennis. Special raffle items will be sold to benefit the charity. Entry will be via the club website. KEEP IT SIMPLE The volley should be simple and foolproof. Just stick your racquet out and hit the ball back over the net. But it’s not that easy. You have to contend with the incoming ball, the position of your opponents, and your target. Keep the following points in mind and your volleys will become better:

Deborah Hull

1. Recognize the ball you are about to hit is descending. Therefore, you must hit with a slightly opened racquet face to have the ball clear the net.

Gayle Silver

2. The power on the volley will come from your weight transfer - the lower body moving forward - more than the upper body hitting the ball. 3. Relax your grip. You will find it much easier to center the racquet in the path of the ball when your arm is relaxed and able to make small adjustments in its position. Nancy Kimball

Your Happeningsin 2017 Thank you to the staff and members who’ve contributed to Happenings in 2016. We’ve been able to share fascinating member profiles, recipes from the Chef, green tips from the Environmental Committee, and spectacular stories of community building. Throughout our coverage we realized that there is so much more storytelling to do. For that reason, we plan to make Happenings a feature-rich quarterly print publication in 2017. You’ll still receive a monthly e-newsletter with a run-down of upcoming events by department. And the handy calendar will be inserted in your mailboxes.

Our goal is to provide you with more exciting editorial about Haig Point and give you a publication that you’ll be proud to share with family and friends. Because what’s happening at Haig Point is truly special!
