The Bald Eagle , our national bird, is the only eagle unique to North America. Both male and female adults have similar coloring - white head, neck and tail, yellow feet and pale yellow eyes. Immature bald eagles have black and brown mottled plumage. It takes 5 years to attain adult plumage. Adult plumage develops when the eagle becomes sexually mature. They live along the coast and on major lakes and rivers where they feed primarily on fish, although they are opportunistic and will take ducks, birds or whatever prey is available. They swoop down and take the prey with their talons. It is possible for bald eagle to live 30 years, however the average lifespan in the wild is 15 to 20 years. During breeding season, the male and female work together to build a nest of sticks, usually near the top of a tree. They will build on a nest for as many as 10 years and the nest can weigh up to a ton. Mating season: late September to early April | Gestation: female lays her first egg 5-10 days after mating.Eggs are incubated for about 35 days. | Clutch size: 1-3 eggs Familiar locations for eagles and eagle nest sitings on Daufuskie are: the Beach Road near Bloody Point, in front of the Melrose Inn and to the right of the 16th tee box on the Haig Point golf course.

TEE-IT-FORWARD TOURNAMENT Saturday, February 4th Tees: Men: Signature Haig Forward Tees Women: Modified Signature Haig Forward Tees Tee Time: 10:00 am shotgun Entry Fee: $20 per person / optional $10 skins game The format is individual stroke play using 100% of a player's handicap. As you probably have seen, the USGA has a large campaign promoting golfers to "Tee-it-Forward" and play from yardages that are more realistic to matching their skill level. It focuses primarily on your average distance off the tee; which if you play from the proper yardage will result in you being able to reach more par 4's and 5's in regulation. So this is a great opportunity to come try the course from a shorter yardage and see how much more enjoyable the game can be! Sign up by calling or emailing the Golf Shop or sign up in the Golf Info Room.
GOLF “TIP OF THE MONTH” Get your Putting Stroke to Match Up When putting, it's very important to have a rhythmic stroke and one that "matches up". PGA Tour professionals are so great at putting because their strokes are rhythmic and match up. Did you know that the average heart rate of a person is 76 beats per minute? Teachers have found that setting a metronome to 76 beats per minute will help your putting stroke become more rhythmic. Before you get on the putting green next time, download a metronome app on your phone, or when you make a stroke, say tick-tock in your head. Match your stroke to the metronome or the tick-tock. Come see one of the Haig Point staff members to help them match your stroke up!

SUPER BOWL ROUND ROBIN
Friday, February 3 10:00 - 12:00 You don’t need to wait until Super Bowl Sunday to know who will win the big game. It will all be sorted out during the Super Bowl Round Robin. This format will form two teams based on the two teams who are playing in the contest. The teams will then play matches against each other; the team who wins the most matches will be the winner. After the tennis, a Super Bowl themed party will be held.

HOW TO BEAT A GOOD LOBBER Good doubles players understand the best way to cover the most court is to be closer to the net. Once there, you can use angles to create opportunities and defend openings on the court. The tradeoff is you are now exposing the baseline, making you vulnerable to the lob. The best remedy for a good lob: a better overhead. Try these points of emphasis on your next overhead. 1. Rotate your shoulders – your first movement needs to be the shoulder turn. Don’t move back facing the net. 2. Make sure the contact point is to the side of the body – don’t stand directly under the ball. This will cause you to step to the side to get away from the ball, not toward the target. 3. Hit out on the ball – you want the feeling of hitting out, not down on the ball.

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS It’s not too early to start making plans for one of the major tennis events of the year. The 3.5s will battle it out on Saturday and 4.0 players will play on Sunday. Please contact the Haig Point Tennis Center for more information.

Happy Winter everyone! It's another balmy and beautiful winter on Daufuskie and a great time to ride! This month at the Equestrian Center we are looking forward to jump
starting our carriage rides. Valentine's Day is a wonderful week to take advantage of this special offer. Beginning Monday February 13th thru Friday February 17th, champagne carriage rides for one couple will be offered for $150 for a 45 minute ride. Pickup at mansion or equestrian center. Champagne provided, please call equestrian center for scheduling and availability. We also welcomed a new island equine member this month. Nemo, the Shetland pony, will be joining our ranks for both young children's pony rides and our driving clinics. Horses can often take time to acclimate to the smaller of their species so Nemo is adjusting to the herd, making new friends and looking forward to visitors!
