Dear Member I would like to begin by recognizing our Board President, Carl Walter, for his dedicated and astute service over the last three years. With the support of the Board of Directors, Carl Walter led us in accomplishing several significant goals toward securing the growth of our community and improving Club amenities. By keeping their focus on the future of Haig Point, Carl and the Board remained steadfast to their commitment. Thank you, Carl, for your leadership.

As was announced last month, the two candidates who will be filling the upcoming Board seats are Silvia Hansell and Adam Hersch. We appreciate and welcome Silvia’s and Adam’s willingness to volunteer their time to serve on the Board. We sincerely thank, Karen Opderbeck and Gary Vaccaro for their time and effort in stepping up as Board candidates and remain grateful for their willingness to participate as committee members. Measurable progress was made in 2017. Thank you to all who supported the Board and me last year, and who continue to support us toward a prosperous 2018. Best,
P.S. GG (Garden Girl) is over 25 now and has been in the garden crazily dressed as our scarecrow and for school bus children and others to enjoy as they go by. We can always use crazy seasonal outfits if you have them. Please leave them in Elizabeth Rogers or Sue Quarta’s cubbies.

Tennis MARDI GRAS ROUND ROBIN
DAUFUSKIE ISLAND ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Friday, February 16th 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
It’s not too early to start making plans for one of the major tennis events of the year. The Daufuskie Island Adult Championships will be held at the award-winning Haig Point Tennis Center on April 6th - 8th. The format is a series of one-day tournaments; doubles in the morning, mixed doubles in the afternoon and lunch in-between. The 3.0s will play on Friday. The 3.5s will battle it out on Saturday and 4.0 players will play on Sunday. Please contact the Haig Point Tennis Center or click HERE for more information.
Let the Good Times Roll as we enjoy the Mardi Gras Round Robin on Friday, February 16th at the Haig Point Tennis Center. The tennis round robin will begin at 10:00 am. Great Mardi Gras food will be available following the event. Click HERE to register for the event.
SERVING UP AND OUT The serve is one of the most important shots in the game. Too often the serve is affected by what we see and not what we feel. Once we toss the ball up to serve, we see the ball way up above our shoulder and head and we feel we need to hit down on the ball to get it in the service court.
TENNIS CLINIC SCHEDULE MONDAY Daufuskie Doubles Drills 10:00 am - 12:00 am
But just the opposite is true. When we are about to serve and looking at the service court, we are looking at the target through the net – a straight line from your eyes to the target will go through the net. The same is true if we looked at the service court through the strings at contact – we are still looking through the net. This feeling of hitting down will lead to the shoulders falling down and bending at the waist. Take a look at Kate Woodward (above) and notice how she is hitting up and out, not hitting down.

Equestrian D
espite the cold temperatures, we have had a busy January here at the Equestrian Center. Contrary to how we may feel in this weather, horses actually enjoy cooler temperatures and can do quite well in a work program as long as the footing is not icy or slick. You will see them all bundled up in their blankets at this time of year, but rest assured, they do prefer to be outside!
Please contact the Equestrian Center for more information. Lastly, please join us for our Community Center Grand Opening and Dedication Ceremony on Monday, February 26, 2018 following the Annual Meeting. Stay warm!
On January 13th & 14th we were happy to host Canadian eventer Michelle Donlick who has her training facility in Aiken, SC. Eventing is a sport which involves the horse conducting a three phase test: dressage, stadium jumping, and cross country. The physical demands are one of the highest in the sport. As such, the two day clinic was challenging for all! We are happy to be hosting another eventing rider at the end of February who will be conducting a two day clinic as well. All of our clinics are open for auditing for a small fee and would love to have as many people come and learn from these professionals at.
