The opening hole is a relatively short par four, pleasing to the eye and featuring the design style and shot values inherent throughout the rest of the course. The ideal tee shot flirts with the left fairway bunkers, in order to provide an approach into the slightly angled green, that is unobstructed by two looming oak trees.

PAR 4 JONES BACK MIDDLE MEMBER

Tree-lined and measuring 430 yards from the Championship markers, this hole requires both accuracy and length. The tee shot must favor the right side of the hole, to avoid three palm trees and an adjacent bunker that angles slightly into the left of the fairway. The front of the green is protected by bunkers left and right, with grass hollows carved into the remainder of the right green slope.

The “Magnolia Hole” is truly unique among Rees Jones designs. Void of any sand or water features, this is one of the most beautiful and challenging holes you’ll see anywhere. During several preconstruction walks of the golf course staking, the centerline of this hole was carefully realigned to insure the abundant magnolia trees were preserved and strategically situated throughout the hole, to function as “hazards”.

The tee shot on this doglegright par five, should favor the left side of the fairway, to avoid a bunker and large tree that fortify the inside of the dogleg. The long second shot must be played to the center of the fairway, to avoid bunkers flanking both sides of the landing zone. The elevated green is surrounded by sculptured bunkers.

Emerging from the tree-lined fairways of the first four holes, golfers are treated to a visually striking and challenging par three, with panoramic vistas of the Calibogue Sound and Harbour Town Lighthouse in the background. A large sculptured bunker borders the left of the fairway approach and green. The front of the green is open and receptive to a low-running shot played beneath the considerable Sound breezes.

Play shifts away from the Sound on this long and challenging par four. Fairway bunkers along the right of the landing area visually turn the hole and guide the golfer around the inside of this tree-lined, dogleg left. The approach must avoid a large bunker protecting the entire right half of the green.

Par could be lost, if the tee shot finds the diagonal bunker that juts into the left side of the landing area. Laying back a bit off the tee, with a well-placed drive, is rewarded with a wider landing zone and a relatively short approach shot, into the small, diagonal green.

Golfers choose to play one of two “Hole Eights” at Haig Point. The tree-lined ‘Haig” is the shorter and less demanding option, although it too requires precise execution. The tee shot, over a small wetland in front of the tees, plays to a narrow, but deep, green that is protected by bunkers on both sides.

#8 Calibogue, measuring 200 yards, is one of the great, “Low Country” golf holes. Ever-changing coastal winds dramatically influence club selection and overall difficulty. The tee shot must carry a tidal marsh, to a “spit” of bulk headed upland, situated in the Calibogue Sound. The green is ample in size and contoured to receive and hold a well-struck shot.

The ideal tee shot carries the saltwater marsh and flirts with the right fairway bunker. An aggressive second shot that carries the wetland fronting the green, is rewarded with a putt for eagle. A more conservative strategy dictates a lay-up, just short of the green, followed by a delicate pitch onto the “perched putting surface.

10 PAR 4

The “Inward Nine begins with a dramatic and solid, doglegright par four. The heroic tee shot allows one to carry as much of the lake and adjacent fairway bunkers, which become progressively more penal, as desired. Finding the fairway off the tee is essential, as the approach into the green is narrow, with frontal bunkers protecting both sides of the green.

As one of the few “straight” holes on the course, accuracy is of paramount importance. Offset bunkers define the fairway landing zone. A large bunker guards the right of this “deep” green, while a smaller bunker and grass hollows frame the left of the putting surface.

JONES BACK MIDDLE MEMBER

Placement off the tee is critical for a birdie or par on this sharp, dogleg-right, par four. The ideal approach into the green requires a slight fade off the tee, completely around the inside of the dogleg. From this location, access to both the right and left portions of this slightly elevated green, is less affected by the large sculptured bunker and tall pine tree, on the front left of the green.

The course momentum continues to build with this deceptively strong, 465 - yard hole. Play a slight draw off the tee, avoiding the bunkers on the right of the fairway, to create an unobstructed angle into the green. A mix of sculptured bunkers and grass hollows surround the green, which narrows in the rear.

14 PAR 5

This hole, perhaps more than any other, showcases the abundant natural diversity that makes Haig Point so uniquely beautiful and challenging. The tee shot of this long par five, is carved from a chute of the island’s mature vegetation. Players must favor the left side off the tee, but avoid the adjacent cluster of bunkers. The second shot must be center cut, to avoid the left bunkers and set-up a direct approach into the green. The fairway bleeds smoothly into the subtle contours of the putting surface, enabling the choice of either an aerial or ground approach. The green, a “peninsula” extending into the salt water marsh, is fully exposed to the swirling winds of Calibogue Sound.

With expansive vistas of Hilton Head Island and the whipping winds of Calibogue Sound at your back, the tee shot of this 205 yard, breathtaking par three, must carry tidal marsh and a massive sculptured bunker, to reach the elevated green. A second bunker frames the rear of the hole. Alternate tees, eliminating the marsh carry, create a playable hole for golfers of all skill.

In wildness is the preservation of the world. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

The layout changes pace again, with this shorter and tighter, “finesse hole. Sacrificing yardage, for accuracy off the tee, is the smart play, in order to preserve a solid round. The front of the green is protected by a wetland and three bunkers. The putting surface is contoured into distinct cupping areas that reward accurate approach play with a good opportunity to make a short birdie putt.

Similar to Hole Eight, a golfer may choose to play the more traditional “Haig” hole, or the more intimidating and difficult, “Calibogue” hole. The “Haig” which can be stretched to play 194 yards, features an open entrance to the green, with bunkers on both sides that protect the various hole locations.

Don’t allow the sheer beauty of this par three, the last of what many consider to be among the finest overall collection of par three holes anywhere, distract you from the considerable task at hand. The tee shot, typically into a stiff Calibogue breeze, requires a full carry of saltwater marsh to reach a bulk headed green that is protected by bunkers left and right.

The finishing hole, a scenic and short par five, affords the opportunity to end the round with a birdie. The tee shot must carry the marsh and avoid a diagonal bunker that encroaches on the right side of the landing area. Big hitters have a chance to get home in two, but the shot into the narrow, elevated green is flanked by deep bunkers and grass hollows that present difficult recovery options.
