Dear Member

Thank you to all who supported the event. April is a month of much activity and excitement. Of course RBC Heritage is this month and runs from April 10th through the 16th. RBC Heritage is this month and runs from April 10th through the 16th. 29th. This year’s field is the largest field in recent history. There is a hourly service will run between the 7:10 am departures from Haig Point through the 7:20 pm departure from Harbour Town. This schedule will be in effect Thursday, April 13th through Sunday, April 16th. On these days, taxi service after 7:10 pm and 7:20 pm will require a reservation. Service requiring reservations will be gratis. As announced last month, Haig Point is honored to host the RBC Wealth Management client group on April 11th. The first planning team from RBC came out early last month. All were impressed with the condition of the facility and extremely complimentary of the golf course. Seventy-two players will attend including six to ten PGA Tour Professionals. As in years past, we ask members to please be respectful of our guest’s privacy and game by keeping their distance until the appropriate time. Renovations to the Men’s Locker Room in the Clubhouse
waiting list if you still have an interest in playing. If you have not been to the second floor of the Clubhouse, you must come by to see how beautifully the Main Dining Rom and Boardroom turned out. The improvement most certainly influenced RBC returning to Haig Point this year. I cannot close without thanking that small group of member volunteers who continue to show up each day to clean-up after Hurricane Matthew. When one member was asked: “Why do you continue coming back every day?” He responded: “Really (it’s) more about the sense of community here and that we all own this place. It is more about community pride and wanting to bring this place back to what it was before the hurricane.” Haig Point does belong to all of us, and how fortunate are we that our members take pride in owning it? It is a beautiful 2017 spring at Haig Point.
will be completed before the event. Prior to Heritage, 2017 Masters will be played in Augusta, GA. Competitions begin on April 6th and end on April 9th. We will hold our annual Master Pick the Winner party on April 5th. Haig Point closes the month with the Men’s Invitational Member Guest. Practice rounds are scheduled for April 26th

Family Life
ON AN ISLAND WITHOUT A BRIDGE There are daily routines that families everywhere share – going to school, finishing homework, doing certain chores and playing with friends. But on a bridgeless island, these routines take on a different twist. Just ask a teenager who eagerly anticipates her “chores” at the barn after school or ask a mother who sends her young daughter out to play without worry - only with the loving reminder to “just be home before dark.” Sometimes daily routines just aren’t “daily routines.”

But more than a meeting place, the ferry is also a study hall. On their return ride home, children exchange greetings and then open their back packs. The ride is a perfect time to finish homework – especially when a little tutoring is always available from a helpful passenger like Kathi.

Doing Chores But life is not all play. Walking the dog, washing the golf cart or cleaning saddles and grooming horses give life structure and a sense of responsibility. At the barn, Olivia (Liv), a 14 year old, does her chores alongside friends of all ages. That’s when conversations happen and wisdom is shared. Her “best friends” range in age from 7 to 35 years old. One of these is Haig Point Equestrian Director Rachel Allen who is every child’s “best friend” and mentor. (fig. 5) Rachel’s program at the barn encourages a strong work ethic and teaches children responsibility by assigning them “ownership” for a particular horse. When considering the possibility of life on a bridgeless island, it’s easy to miss the forest for the trees. Although, at first glance, the logistics might seem daunting, in practice they are neither difficult nor limiting, and the benefits are many. Parents can let their children go out to play without worry. Children enjoy the friendships of an extended family. There is an excellent choice of schools and a commute without traffic. Children develop a self-confidence that comes from associating with people of all ages and from many different cultures. One Haig Point student who attends the Heritage Academy has friends from as far away as Brazil and the Czech Republic. But the over-arching benefit comes from living on Daufuskie. It is the benefit of falling in love with its secluded beaches, moss-draped trees, whispering marshes and becoming a caretaker of this incredible island. One mother summed up life on a bridgeless island as “a unique experience that children can’t get anywhere else in the world.” Another said, “I wouldn’t want my kids to grow up any place else.”

Captain Raymond (Ray) Morris joined Haig Point on April 1st, 1987 as an overnight boat Captain. He’s called the low country home for almost four decades, raising three daughters and a son on the waterways surrounding Hilton Head and Bluftton.
