Summer 2020

Happenings from the Chief Dear Member After a long and challenging start to 2020, SUMMER FUN IS FINALLY HERE! Haig Point always seems most alive in the sunshine and warm weather. This month’s edition of the Happenings is focused on the water and boating. Enjoying Daufuskie, our island without a bridge, is uniquely tied to enjoying the water. Haig Point and water fun go together like shades and flip flops! As you know, the Haig Point Boat Club has officially launched. This creative new service helps facilitate Member’s use of boat dockage, boat storage, boat launching and boat cleaning. It makes boat ownership at Haig Point easier and more accessible to our Members. For information on the Boat Club please see the Club website at haigpoint.com/ boatclub or email boatclub@haigpoint.com. I would like to remind everyone of our recent reciprocity agreement with the Palmetto Bluff Club. Our Members can take advantage of special discounts, unqiue amenities and superb service culture. We are offering Water Taxi service to Palmetto Bluff and we encourage you to experience this
private gem. More information on our extensive reciprocal club programs can be found on our Haig Point member website under MY CLUB > AFFILIATE CLUBS. Putting extra marketing focus on our community’s safety and security during the coronavirus crisis has proven successful. During the 74 days of lockdown this spring our year-over year sales statistics were up considerably; website inquiries +68%, new contracts +67%, total sales volume +34%, and average sales price +12%. In the first half of the year we welcomed 19 new members to Haig Point and we continue to see an accelerating number of real estate and membership visitors. I thank everyone for their support and encouragement over the difficult spring and I look forward to enjoying the summer with all of you.

JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM
IMPROVE YOUR FIRST STEP The ability to move is directly related to your center of gravity. When you are in the ready position don’t make the common mistake of having your feet too close together. The ideal ready position should show your feet are shoulder width apart. Notice in the picture how Novak’s feet are outside of his shoulders. Even if you can only widen your base by two or three inches, that will help. Another common mistake in the ready position is bending over too much. The bending should be done with the knees and the back should be comfortably upright. Again, look at the picture of Novak and see how his shoulders are up, his back is straight, and the racquet head is above the hands – another common mistake.
The summer is here and the Haig Point Tennis Center’s Junior Tennis Program is in full swing. Programs are offered to ages 4 – 17 and all ability levels.

NEMO NEEDS PERSONAL TRAINERS If you haven’t met our resident munchkin, Nemo, then you are missing out on a delightful and sassy pony. Since he is a registered miniature Gelding and measures only 34” tall, he doesn’t get a lot of saddle time and is in need of exercise to get his summer body back! Nemo is well trained to a halter and harness and gets his exercise by walks and jogs around the block. He is easily lead much like a large dog and enjoys getting out! We need exercisers to come several times weekly to take him around Haig Point. Call to schedule a walk or run Monday through Saturday! Want to see what Nemo is up to? RIDER TIP With this ring finger I ride thee better.. Many riders struggle to keep their hands still while in the saddle. It is instinctual for human beings to use our hands and arms to balance when we feel insecure. Lifting or raising our hands or having our fingers open while holding the reins can result in the horse being out of control, nervous or upset because the riding is inadvertently pulling on their mouth, or in pain because the rider is using the bit and reins to help themselves balance. Practice at home by taking a strap or dog leash, place the “reins” between your ring finger and pinkie finger and work on keeping gentle contact with your fingers closed on your palms. Your hands should never be open or above hip length while holding the reins. Squeeze just your ring finger and watch as the strap moves as it would when it is attached to a horses’ bit. Practice making this part of your muscle memory. Your hand position should always be one that is low and in front of your hips with fingers gently closed at all times. Notice the imaginary “line” from the rider’s elbow down the rein. Take a look at the image below for proper hand position and closed fingers.
