s the weather turns warmer and the sun returns, the golf world’s attention returns to the Lowcountry as the RBC Heritage Tournament approaches. Due to the attendance restrictions, many of our Members have taken advantage of our opportunity to purchase advanced tickets before the general public. While we will not be able to have our Club hospitality tent, we look forward to celebrating the Tournament as a community both on the course and at our venues. Please watch for the details of our events. Spring also brings Easter, the Master’s Tournament and Mother’s Day. We are excited to host our annual traditions in a safe, careful way. We hope you and your family can join us. Progress continues on the Mansion Café and General Store upgrades. Both outlets are expanding their retail offerings. We can now indulge in baked goods at the café. The General Store has enhanced its wine list and now sells bottles of liquor. We hope these amenity services will increase Member convenience and encourage an inviting, cozy atmosphere in our Mansion. As reported in the recent Annual General Meeting of the Club, we welcomed many new Members in 2020 and began several new Club services. Keep up-to-date on the Club’s activities with the “Weekly Happenings,” the Monthly Calendar, and of course, the Member Website. I am excited about the upcoming spring and summer at Haig Point. It is truly a beautiful day at Haig Point, enjoy it!

Bluebirds: A Daufuskie Favorite Because of the mild climate, Daufuskie is a good place for bird watching all year long and a favorite of birders is the Bluebird. It has been said that he carries on his back the blue of heaven and, on his breast, the rich brown of the freshly turned earth.
M
any people attract Bluebirds solely for their beauty, but Bluebirds also provide excellent help in controlling insect pests. Throughout the breeding season, mating pairs can be seen bringing the nestlings crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, and moth larvae. These insects are often destructive to agricultural crops, orchards, and gardens, so the Bluebird’s beauty is more than feather-deep. In winter, when insects are not readily available, the Bluebird will eat wild fruits and berries to augment its diet. Eastern Bluebirds can live for 6 to 10 years however, they have many natural predators including snakes, domestic cats, flying squirrels, fire ants, and raccoons. At Haig Point, residents have found a way to protect these precious birds from their many predators and to encourage them to stick around. According to Member, Kathi De Leo, Bluebird lovers have put up 18 nesting boxes around the golf course over the past 14 years and volunteers have been tending each of them regularly to monitor egg laying and hatching activities and to ensure that the houses are clean and remain in good repair. Happily, this has resulted in over 600 baby Bluebirds being added to the Bluebird population here at Haig Point.
The Haig Point monitors are very happy to be included in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Nest Watch program. This is a nationwide research effort to track the movements of the bluebirds for scientific purposes.

Proudly brewing up a better morning The Strachan Mansion now boasts a brand-new café serving Starbucks. Members and guests no longer need to hop a boat for their favorite cup of joe and a quick breakfast.
page | 8
We caught up with Mansion Attendant, Sierra Smith, in between slinging drinks to ask a few questions:
When is the busiest time? Right at 7 AM when we open and before the 3:40 PM boat. People load up on drinks for the ride home.
What is your favorite drink to make? Iced Hazelnut Mocha Coconut Milk Macchiato - Hazelnut syrup, Coconut Milk, Espresso, Ice and Bittersweet Mocha Sauce. It’s two drinks in one!
Was it hard to learn how to make the drinks? No, there is a basic structure that almost every drink follows. I picked it up pretty quickly.
What is your favorite drink to drink? Java Chip Frappucino - Mocha, chocolate chips, coffee, milk and ice blended. Topped with whipped cream.
Did you drink Starbucks before it was offered at Haig Point? Oh yes! It was my big treat when I would leave the island. Now I don’t need to leave to treat myself!
What is the most popular drink people order? Hot Mochas and believe it or not regular drip coffee!
Members and Guest may enjoy the Mansion Café and Bar everyday from 7 AM - 5 PM

GOLF
PUTTING TIPS FROM THE PRO - Jay Garrick, PGA, Director of Golf Grip – Reverse Overlap, hands curved downward Posture – Flex at the knees, bent from the waist, with eyes over the ball, and soft elbows Pace – Smoothness and rhythm are key to a steady putting stroke 1) Keep It Loose The pace at which you hit your putts is the most critical element of putting. Let’s start with loose arms. Let them just hang freely from your shoulders as you don’t want any tension creeping through your hands into your forearms and up into your shoulders as that will completely fuse your putting stroke. You want to feel nice and loose with a gentle grip so that you’re comfortably in control yet still able to move the putter back and forth freely from the shoulders. 2) One-handed Putting For a right-hander, your feel hand is your right hand, but many golfers think that if they stay connected and quite wooden in the arms, they’ll be better putters. But the right hand plays a huge role in the judgement of feel and length, so try putting with your left hand off the club. Just stroke the club backwards and forwards and feel the movement. It will feel vulnerable at first, but will give you a better appreciation of the lag of the putter and the release going through.

UNDER PRESSURE The scoreboard can apply a lot of pressure to even the most seasoned player. One tactic often used by the pros is to imagine the score is reversed: instead of being down a break, imagine you are up a break. Reversing the score is an excellent trick if you tend to tighten up on breakpoints or serve for the match. This tactic is beneficial if you play on the ad side and tend to miss returns on breakpoints. Breakpoints are chock-full with pressure. If you keep missing the return on a breakpoint, tell yourself it’s the opponent’s ad and not a breakpoint. If you can convince yourself, this should relieve the pressure. It takes practice, so don’t despair if it doesn’t happen right away.

CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE ROUND ROBIN Thursday, May 20th One of the most famous tennis events of the year, The Cheeseburger in Paradise Round Robin, is scheduled for Thursday, May 20, from 3-5. Following the tennis, a Caribbeanstyle cookout will be held at the Adult Pool. Entry will be via the club website.
GREEN IS THE NEW YELLOW Did you know it takes over 400 years for a tennis ball to decompose? The Haig Point Tennis Center is proud to be part of a solution. The Tennis Center has joined forces with RecycleBalls to recycle used tennis balls. RecycleBalls takes the balls and will turn them into various useful products such as Laykold Tennis courts, natural rubber flooring for playgrounds and horse arenas, rubber form sign bases, and, possibly, in the not-too-distant future, T-shirts and tennis shoes. In addition to maintaining the environment, we also receive a tax deduction on the used balls—definitely a win-win for everyone. So if you have some used tennis balls lying about, drop them off at the Tennis Center and help the environment.
PADDLE OF THE MONTH There’s a reason the Bantam EX-L finds its way onto so many championship courts. This medium-weight, full-sized paddle features the advanced Bantam PolyCore interior for responsive returns. Game after game, it delivers the power and performance you need to win at the highest play levels. Smart Response Technology provides the driving force behind its explosive yet controlled shots. Simultaneously, a velvettextured polycarbonate surface gives you a lasting spin whether you’re hitting over or under the ball.

WESTERN VS. ENGLISH SADDLES Styles of riding have a long history of function over form resulting in contemporary times as two basic riding types: English and Western. Western riding is used most commonly for recreational or trail riders as it gives a deeper seat and more support for those who do not participate in riding as a sport. Contrary to popular belief, the horn on the Western saddle is not for holding onto for balance. Cultures reliant on herding cattle both in North and South America had to have one hand free to throw a rope to lasso a cow or another horse. The horn held necessary equipment as the rider used only one hand to steer the horse. Saddles needed to be comfortable for long periods of time working the ranch and range, hence the design and shape of the saddle. With the evolution of horseback riding into a predominantly pleasure sport, horses ridden Western are bred to be comfortable, and riders sit in the saddle during all three gaits - walk, trot, and canter. Continued on the next page
ONLINE EXTRA View a rider demonstration at haigpoint.com/about/newsletter or scan this code
pag e | 17
EQUESTRIAN Continued from previous page English riding, unlike its name, does not originate just from the United Kingdom but from all of Europe, having roots centuries old in Germany, France, and Spain. The English saddle unlike the Western is more flat, giving the rider full contact with the horse both in the seat and legs. There is no horn nor a high back and thick stirrup leathers as found on the Western saddle. There are many variations of English riding with the most common in the United States being huntseat and dressage. However, all English saddles are designed to give the horse and rider freedom of movement for various tasks including jumping, racing and classical riding. Horses are ridden with two hands unlike Western and riders will often rise out of the saddle at the trot, at a gallop and over jumps allowing the horse to use its strength for the task at hand, not to balance the rider. Most Olympic equestrian sports are done in an English Saddle. It is worth noting that just like a pair of shoes, a saddle must be fitted to each horse in order to avoid back issues, chronic pain and long term damage. Saddles are chosen first based on the style of riding (English or Western) then fitted to the horse. Additionally, horses cannot switch between riding disciplines unless undergoing specific training to do so. Some are bred specifically for a style of riding and despite any training, will never be able to switch from English to Western or visa versa. If you are interested in learning more of the history or riding, please check out the following resource or ask one of our staff members!

NAUTICAL FACT: TIDESOOK A • Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels. With two high tides and two low tides each day, South Carolina’s Lowcountry experiences one of the highest range of tides on the east coast. • The tidal range is the vertical distance through which the tide rises and falls, the difference in water height between low tide and high tide. Around Daufuskie, the tidal range is between 8 – 9 feet, sometimes more. • At low tide, the depth of water at the ‘cut’, the passage between Buck Island and Bram Point in Spanish Wells is around 4 feet. With the depth of our large ferries being 4 ft, it becomes unsafe to risk taking the boats through the cut. Thus, the need on occasion to proceed the long way around Buck Island. It’s the individual boat Captain’s decision, and he’ll always opt for the safety of transit. • Occasionally tide height will exceed the normal range of tide. This occurs during the so-called ‘King Tide.’ These tides occur naturally and typically caused by a spring tide – when the sun, moon, and earth align during a new and full moon, increasing overall tides. Predicted 2021 King Tides are: April 26 – 29, May 24 – 28, June 22 – 25, July 22 – 24, October 7 – 10, November 4 – 8 and December 3 – 7
Also in the sound and on the nearshore waters we will also be targeting fish such as spanish mackerel, black sea bass , black drum, whiting, bluefish, triple tail and various sharks.

SPRING FISHING REDFISH, SPECKLED SEA TROUT, FLOUNDER, SHARK, COBIA, BLACK SEA BASS In the fishing world, as the days become longer and the water temperature starts to heat up so does the fishing. When the inshore redfish start to break out of their schooling patterns they will spread out and start feeding heavily as the estuary becomes abundant with small bait fish, shrimp and crabs In the Port Royal Sound the cobia should be migrating in as they prepare to spawn.

SPRING MARKETING UPDATE
Real Estate and Membership sales continue to be strong. Through the first quarter of 2021 we are way ahead of our 2020 pace. 13 Homes have closed in first quarter of 2021 versus five in 2020. And while the number of available homes is the lowest it has ever been, it has boded well for lot sales. Four lots have already closed with an average sale price of $178,333. That adds to the 12 closed over the previous twelve months. Lot purchasers are moving quickly through the design process. In March 2021, we had five new owners present home plans to the Architectural Review Board. We anticipate several new home starts in the second quarter and are looking forward to all the beautiful new Haig Point homes. IMPROVED LOT MARKETING As demand increased for home sites, we hired a new Landscape Manager, Eric Syme, to help keep our club inventory cleared. His efforts are paying off, with many areas of the community now looking more appealing. In addition to bush hogging each lot, he trims trees and works to open up views wherever possible. You may see viewing stands (pictured below) on a handful of our most coveted properties for sale. These are designed for prospective owners to walk up and imagine the view they would have from their dream home. Feel free to go take a look if you are driving by and be sure to grab an information flyer if you or someone you know may be interested.
