Happenings from the Chief Dear Member

As we start the New Year, I cannot help but reflect on 2020. It was a year filled with new financial, health and social challenges brought by the COVID pandemic. It was a year filled with change and uncertainty. It was also a year filled with courage, community awareness, kindness and generosity. Haig Point became a safe haven for our Members and their families. Our staff adapted to new safety protocols and cargo demands. Our community followed the CDC guidelines for mask wearing, social distancing, self-quarantine and isolation. I have never been more proud of our Club, our Members and our Staff.

Along with the challenges, 2020 showcased our Club’s unique character and advantages. We added over 40 new residents, have sold 30 new Club Memberships out of inventory and have enjoyed strong real estate sales. We anticipate continued success throughout 2021. Haig Point is a growing and thriving Club and Community.

Here’s to a great New Year!

We chatted with Ryan Kuhn of Kansas City, Kansas to find out how his family (wife Emilee, and kids Owen and Addison) found Haig Point and decided to become National Members. Meet the Kuhns I own a marketing agency. Emilee is an insurance executive. We met in college at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. After moving to Chicago to start our careers after college we moved back to Kansas City in 2011 to raise a family and now have two kids – Owen, 7 and Addison 4. How did you hear about Daufuskie? We had been to Hilton Head in the past and really enjoyed the area. When the pandemic started we were looking for a socially distanced getaway where we could spend the majority of our time outdoors. We immediately thought of Hilton Head but then Emilee remembered a business dinner she had on a small island off of Hilton Head several years earlier and after a quick Google search we found it was Daufuskie Island and Haig Point.

How did you decide to become Members? After inquiring online, Maria Sawyer, Haig Point’s Sales Manager, invited us down for a Discovery Experience. We had been going a little stir crazy working from home so in June, shortly after our local stay-at-home order was lifted, we packed up the car and made the 16-hour drive out to South Carolina. The kids were thrilled to get to stay in a Lighthouse! That weekend we were able to explore the island, spend time at the pool, Beach Club and even squeezed in a round of golf. The whole weekend was just so relaxing and peaceful – we really just fell in love with the island (and the golf course). I remember going over to the beach one evening and we were the only ones out there – it truly felt like we were on our own private island. After getting back home we couldn’t stop thinking about our time at Haig Point and how much we wanted to go back. We immediately started looking at houses online. After much discussion we decided that with living so far away, our

jobs and kids’ school schedules, that full-time ownership probably wasn’t right for us at this stage of our life. The National Membership was a perfect option for us as it gives us the opportunity to visit and rent houses on the island as it works for our schedule.

pag e | 9

H AI G P O I NT | WI N T E R H A P P EN I NG S

How often do you visit and for what reasons? We’re still fairly new and in our first year of membership. Working remotely throughout the pandemic has given us the opportunity to make week-long trips in both July and August and we’ll be making a third trip over the holidays – excited to experience the island in the winter. In the future we plan to visit during the summer and school breaks. We’re excited to bring family and friends and Ryan’s hoping to plan a golf weekend with the guys.

p a ge | 10

How do you stay in touch with Haig Point and the island? We follow Haig Point on social media, and I think the Club does a great job of communicating via email and notifications in the Club Essentials app. We also read the Happenings newsletter every month. Even living 1,000 miles away we always feel like we know what’s going on. Is it difficult to rent a property each time? So far we’ve not had any trouble with rental availability. We enjoy getting to experience different houses and staying in different neighborhoods within Haig Point.

Anything else you’d like to share? Even though we enjoy the peacefulness and seclusion of the island, everyone we have met to date has been so friendly and have made us and the kids feel very welcome. We even met another couple from Kansas City and found out that one of our good friends from college has a cousin that lives at Haig Point. We love the community feel and have been equally impressed with the staff. Our kids have already made a special bond with Tiffany and can’t wait to see her every time we come to visit.

HAPPENINGS Winter Golf Shop Hours of Operation: 7:30 AM – 4PM Tuesday – Sunday Practice Facility Hours of Operation: Tuesday – Saturday 7:30 AM – Dusk Closes at 5 PM on Sundays

PLAY WITH THE PRO Director of Golf, Jay Garrick, PGA, explains how to hit a good iron shot PICK A TARGET Before each shot pick out your target. It is shocking how often golfers step up to their ball without thinking about where they want their ball to go. The simple truth is that knowing your target dramatically increases your likelihood of hitting it. When selecting a target, make it as small as possible, while still being able to sight it easily. Thin tree trunks, telephone poles, or distant chimneys all provide great targets that require your brain to be precise in aiming and executing each shot. Part of your pre-shot routine should include picking a target, mentally sighting a line from the ball to the target, and lining up your shot to move at your intended target. Hitting straight iron shots begins in your pre-shot routine. TAKE A DIVOT Most beginners try to help the ball in the air by scooping or trying to lift the ball with the club. Ironically, this tends to lead to thin shots where the club strikes the ball in the middle and results in lower trajectory shots. To get your irons higher into the air, hit the ball on the downswing and take a divot after the ball. The descending blow will increase your chances to make good contact, compressing the ball, and causing it to rebound off the club face much like a rubber ball after hitting the ground. This compression and rebound also impart back-spin to the ball, stabilizing its flight, and providing stopping power around the green.

MAINTAIN A RHYTHM Your shots have a rhythm to them that is dictated by the natural movement of your body. This rhythm is sometimes referred to as the kinematic sequence and dictates in what order different parts of your body fire for optimum clubhead speed and control. Swinging faster than normal forces parts of your body to move out of rhythm or sequence and results in skulled shots or shanks. Instead of swinging for full power on every shot, try to swing comfortably at 75% to maintain a smooth rhythm to your swing. During play, focus on this rhythm rather than the mechanics of your swing to keep a steady, consistent, and repeatable swing.

Tennis THE MOST CRITICAL POSITION ON THE COURT The returner of the serve in doubles is perhaps the most crucial position on the doubles court Without question the most critical shot in doubles is going to be the service return. The goal of the return is to neutralize the server’s advantage and take control of the point. When you are returning you have three choices: you can either go deep cross court, you could go towards the net man, and you could lob over the net. Now let’s discuss those three choices in detail. The most common return is when the serve you are receiving is in the center of the court and you’re going to hit the return crosscourt. Try to drive the ball deep; very often the server will be standing just inside the baseline and that’s a great time to attack their feet. You can almost always vary the depth of that return - sometimes hitting it deep at their feet or sometimes dropping it short. If you’re receiving a serve that is pushed out wide, that’s a great time to take the return wide as well. Width create width. On this return make sure that you do not return come back to the middle of the court because you will still need to protect the court in case your opponent tries to hit a wide return as well. Another effective service return is to go at the net man. You can do this in one of two ways: either in the alley or to attack their inside shoulder. If you were in the deuce court and your opponent at the net is right handed, hitting the return at their inside or right shoulder usually will produce week return reply and that’s a great opportunity to attack the short ball and take control of the point.

p a ge | 14

Mary Ettinger

You can also attack the net man by driving your return towards the alley as this is very effective when you have an opponent who likes to drift towards the middle of the court looking for balls to pick off. This is a great tactic to use early in the match as it sets the tone and send a message to the opponent that you are looking to attack when he moves.

The third effective return is to lob over the net man. If you are receiving a serve directed at your body, a lob is a great option. Often you’re playing a team where one player is stronger than the other, if the stronger player serving and lobbing over the net man will force the stronger player to move laterally across the court and hitting a weaker backhand rather than being able to set up an attacking forehand. Try these ideas the next time on court.

Equestrian A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Help Us Keep Our Horses Healthy! A Summary of Toxic Foods and Plants We love to see our Members and guests visiting the horses in the afternoons and bringing by the occasional treat that they so enjoy. Our horses love the attention in the afternoons and look forward to their fence line rendezvous! We would, however, like to ask each one of you and any guests or family members you may have to be aware of certain treats and foods that horses should never eat. We have often seen leftover veggies or fruits in the pastures and want to educate everyone to the dangers. Please keep in mind that horses are NOT omnivores and many seemingly harmless plants can be poisonous, cause gastrointestinal issues, and in the worse cases, colic and death. ALWAYS ALLOWED: Carrots and apples. Please do not feed more than 1 - 2 at any given time per horse. Yes, some horses will push the others away from the fence and may try and “hog” the treats, but please only give them two at the most. SOMETIMES ALLOWED: Peppermints are a favorite but should be used sparingly. Just like us, processed sugar is not an ideal ingredient in a regular diet. An occasional peppermint after a lesson or once in awhile is fine, but for regular treat giving, please refrain from candy of any type! NEVER ALLOWED: Grass clippings or moldy hay. Grass clippings ferment as soon as they are cut and should a horse digest them, they will continue to ferment in the gut which leads to gas colic, a potentially deadly condition. The horses are fed on a schedule with hay portioned out intentionally by Equestrian Staff. Never feed them from the hay piles sitting outside the fences or outside the barn. Acorns, oleander, fern, any type of nightshade (including potatoes and tomatoes), milk weed, azalea, buttercup, onions and garlic, any pitted fruits (think peaches, plums avocados), the broccoli family, peppers, or any type of cabbages, candy.

In short, we ask for each you to help us protect our equine friends and feed them a healthy amount (1 - 2 carrots or apples per horse) of treats at a given time. We want to continue to allow our Members and guests to visit them on the fence lines with a treat occasionally but we need everyone’s cooperation. And of course should you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to our very knowledgeable Equestrian Staff!

RIDE ‘N WINE Tuesday, March 23rd 4 PM Leisurely ride followed by wine and hors d’oeuvres. All rider levels welcomed. Call to book a group of any level riders with specialty platters created by Chef Taylor. Available for personal bookings as well. $55 per person

It would be impossible to list every award both academic and competitive that she has received, as it would take up the entire page but a few notable accolades include: recipient of the American Connemara Pony Society’s Equestrian Educational scholarship, United States Equestrian Federation’s High School Equestrian Athlete Program, Dana Hall School’s Equestrian Team Hall of Fame Award, Team Captain and Notable Alumnae Award, scholarship recipient for theatre excellence, TABS National singing competition, as well as several leadership awards in both character, riding, and theatre. Anyone who meets Matti, will instantly be able to identify the positivity and excellence she puts in her work. You may see Matti both at our Melrose facility leading trail rides or in the arena teaching lessons. She writes, “Working at Haig Point for the past two months has been an incredible experience. The Members and staff alike are one big family, and it is truly a wonderful environment to be a part of day in and day out. I am thankful for the privilege of caring for horses and working closely with the members who own them. I look forward to meeting many more wonderful people here and becoming a familiar face! I’m reminded daily of my love for the Lowcountry, and I could never tire of life on the ocean. It is truly a special place and I’m so grateful to be here.” We are grateful that she joined our team of professionals and look forward to all members being able to learn from her knowledge and experience!

Boating + Outdoor News DHEC GRANT AWARDED • Haig Point recently was awarded a $139,000 grant from South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Haig Point will use the funds to help replace two older, non-compliant diesel engines in the Haig Point IV ferry with two new, fuel efficient, low emission diesels.

NEW US MAIL CONTRACT • Haig Point has been awarded the postal contract for the next 7 years. We more than doubled the amount of the contract due to the increased amount of letter mail and packages sent and received each day. We’re very excited to have secured this important amenity for our members.

The grant application was submitted by Haig Point’s Transportation Committee. Chairman Steve Hill commented that the Committee assembled a sound package and wanted to particularly thank the Daufuskie Island Conservancy as well as SC State Senator Tom Davis and SC Representative Jeff Bradley who all endorsed Haig Point’s application. The grant funds will help Haig Point’s Marine Capital Plan. Haig Point IV engine change-out is expected to take place in spring-summer 2021.

Delivering mail to Daufuskie Island is no easy feat! An employee goes to Post Office on Hilton Head first thing in the morning and signs out the mailbox keys and scanner. They then sort and load all of the mail and transport it to the Embarkation and transfer it into trailers. All letter mail is required to be transported in enclosed trailers. After the ferry ride, they scan all the packages and deliver within Haig Point. Any outside mail gets loaded into our mail van to deliver to Melrose and Historic District mailboxes. After delivering and picking up outgoing mail and packages along the way the employee is required to “escort” the outgoing mail back to the Post Office. Outgoing mail is brought inside to go out on a truck around 6 PM that evening to Charleston main postal hub.

The Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) Program funds grants that protect health and improve air quality by reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines. Diesel emissions make up a significant portion of the mobile air pollution in the Southeast. Reducing diesel engine emissions is one of the most important air quality challenges in South Carolina. NAUTICAL TRIVIA • Each day the Haig Point ferry boats pass the number “31” green day-marker, an aid to navigation, at the cut of Broad Creek Channel on the north end of Buck Island. Do you know what the yellow square on the day-marker’s face signifies? Navigational aids marking the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) display unique yellow symbols to distinguish them from aids marking other waters. Every ICW navigational aid, in addition to its regular numbering, shape, and color, shows a yellow reflective symbol. The symbol is a square on green day-markers or buoys and a triangle on red navigational aids. WINTER FISHING REDFISH, BULL REDFISH, SPECKED TROUT, BLACK DRUM, SHEEPSHEAD TACKLE: light leaders, smaller baits, spin or fly gear, pole for low tide flats The winter months offer some of the best sight fishing opportunities of the year. As the water cools, much of the algae and plankton that would normally give the waters a “cloudy or dirty look, dies off resulting in crystal clear visibility. The cooler water also results in redfish huddling together in huge schools in super skinny water. Winter is a peak time to target large schools of these hungry fish on the low tide flats and creeks. Offshore/Nearshore fishing around 5 to 15 miles out can be epic for big Bull Redfish running in large schools.

BOOK A CHARTER Private and Semi-private charters are available all year. We have partnered with several local captains to provide you and your guests a successful day on the water! We offer several charters during the year (check the website calendar for more information) and we are also happy to arrange a private charter for you at anytime! In-shore, near-shore and off-shore/deep sea itineraries available. Pickup and dropoff is from Community Dock and everything is included and provided for you: rods, tackle, bait and beverages. Times are dictated by the tides to ensure the most successful trip. Please contact Lauren Hunt at lhunt@haigpoint.com to book your charter or with any questions.

CAST A LINE The Club has several Penn rods and reels for Members and Guests to borrow. The rods are set up for in-shore fishing, pond fishing and live bait. We also have kids rods available. Fee is $20/per rod/per day. Contact the Front Desk at 843.686.2000 to reserve a rod. We also have frozen bait available. Please consult and adhere to SC DNR regulations

LOOKING AHEAD A stable stock market, low interest rates, and shifting attitudes have us hopeful that momentum will continue into 2021. It is clear that large businesses are adapting their office model and allowing more employees to work from home. Therefore, we believe that the trend toward full time residency will continue, including young families and empty nesters. Haig Point, traditionally a vacation home community, is now being called a forever home by a growing number of residents. New home construction is expected to continue as well. Resale home inventory remains low, while demand is driving existing home prices higher. The delta between building versus purchasing an existing home is shrinking boding well for lot sales in 2021.

PREMIER PROPERTIES BY HAIG POINT Haig Point’s subsidiary is the number one real estate brokerage on Daufuskie Island. Be sure to pick up a copy of our annual report in February for a complete analysis of our 2020 real estate sale results. Call 843-341-8110 today if you are interested in buying or selling. Working with a Premier Properties by Haig Point agent supports the development of our community.
