strikes you is what’s missing. Cars. Noise. Stress. And then you realize that there really isn’t anything missing at all. On the southernmost tip of the Carolinas, Haig Point is an intimate community set upon an island suspended in time. It is not an escape from life, but a deeper immersion into it. And that’s the whole point.

A long oyster shell road traces a sandy shore … two soft white threads that weave our community together. Here, between marsh grasses and the water’s edge, we let the tides and sun tell time. Water is our muse, and we immerse ourselves barefoot and carefree. Here, we ride, walk and nap. Chase fiddler crabs, count dolphins, fly kites, gather sand dollars, sway in hammocks. We are all children here.

This is the magical part, with cell phones silent, the conversations are now between neighbors and guests — catching up, planning an outing, storytelling. Our reality is the lost art of talking with fellow passengers on trains and planes. It somehow made us friendlier, more aware human beings. Being less connected actually makes us more so. One of the unexpected surprises at Haig Point is that bustling Harbour Town is a short jaunt across Calibogue Sound. Surrounding the picturesque yacht basin, Harbour Town features a nice selection of boutiques and highly rated restaurants as well as casual outdoor cafés. Here too is a luxurious private club to enjoy drinks and dining overlooking the harbor, and even more world-class golf, where Haig Point members enjoy reciprocal play.

Whether winding through mossy oak-draped lanes or cruising along the beach road in carts or bikes on miles of brilliant white crushed oyster shells, this is how we most enjoy Haig Point. Pancake flat, there’s little effort in going from a morning coffee to a few sets of tennis. The one thing on which we all agree is bikes and carts instead of cars.

DELICIOUS
Every day and every meal on our island presents another opportunity for the Point’s culinary team to stir the soul. Here, there’s a distinctly local approach, with seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and the day’s catch fresh from the Sound. It’s a celebration of Lowcountry cuisine that brings creative approaches to favorite entrées — she-crab soup, southern fried chicken and green tomatoes, gumbos, cobblers, and of course, oysters. Whether a forever favorite or a new entrée, the Point’s culinary team always satisfies.

POSSIBILITIES — INFINITE How we gather is simply put as … always and in good humor. Next is where, which at Haig Point means the Clubhouse, the beachfront Calibogue Club, even the Strachan Mansion for early risers. The Calibogue Club is the social heart of the community and the definitive place to gather — around the bar, throughout two floors of dining with panoramic views, on a long waterfront screen porch, and around pool and firepits on the beach as the sun sets.
Two traditional stairways frame the Clubhouse façade, suggestive of the grand and festive gatherings that are a Haig tradition. The Clubhouse is home to indoor/outdoor dining at the Grill Room & Patio and a collection of dining rooms and a ballroom for special events, corporate meetings and weddings. Overlooking a shimmering lake and distant fairway, the Clubhouse is just steps away from the Wellness & Racquet Sports Club, making it a lively staple for everyday dining for all our sporting communities.

REES JONES’
PERSPECTIVE “I’ve been fortunate to design golf courses at some of the greatest sites in the world and Haig Point is no exception. It’s not a surprise to see it on many “Top 100” lists, it’s that good. Haig Point is an example of my changing design philosophy. I originally created the course with numerous pot bunkers that were in vogue at the time. Now, many have been replaced by windswept, more natural looking sand traps and waste areas that are more fitting to the surroundings. The community provides a wonderful sense of life, a pristine environment, and separates you from the turmoil in which we live. It’s hard to argue why you would want to be anywhere else than here.” – Rees Jones
A Quick Nine. The Osprey Course. Haig Point features a nine-hole beauty winding through the pines and past the Equestrian Center. It offers a fast, friendly option for those who are new to the game or are out for a casual tune-up. The par 36 Osprey course consists of Bermuda grass and has a rating of 74.9 with a slope rating of 142. Perfect for a quick round before or after the workday, and often enjoyed with the family.

Tennis and pickleball at Haig Point are active, engaging, and year-round. Played on six immaculate courts, clinics and private lessons are held for every type of player, beginner to advanced. Here too is the Point’s Fitness Center and an adult lap pool. As the main golf-oriented clubhouse is just steps away, these clustered amenities are always lively — another everyday social scene that makes this such a uniquely close community.

Haig Point has a 12-stall barn with tack room, lounge, and wash/grooming stalls. The stables open out to three meticulously manicured acres where boarded horses graze daily. There are four turnout pastures as well as a riding arena and round pen. Most important is that the facility is fully staffed by an accomplished team, seven days a week, to ensure quality care and expert instruction. Trail rides are open to all, and lessons are available in both private and group settings for riders of every skill level. Our experienced instructors are knowledgeable in assessing and improving riding style and abilities.

NONE OF THE FUSS Yet another attribute of Haig Point membership is the wealth of access to neighboring and international affiliate clubs. Locally, the South Carolina and Harbour Town Yacht Clubs afford our members the ability to dine and lounge in stunning locations. Like all things on Haig Point, the club’s mantra is boating made effortless and carefree. Members arriving from Charleston and points north can tie up at our convenient Community Dock, as do those day-tripping or overnighting from Hilton Head marinas. Club members enjoy launching and retrieval services, maintenance, and provisioning for effortless outings on the water.
“No one arrives here by accident. We live here because we get it. It’s real. Not a stage set. What we get is priceless ... to know and trust our neighbors as family.”

Part of the charm of our neighborhoods is that every home is a unique interpretation of island living — with breezy balconies and loggias, airy floor plans, and patios that open to postcard views — lakes, the Sound, lagoons and marsh — no two are quite alike.

THE MANSION Now the historic building features four luxurious suites, each with a tie to Haig Point’s history and beautifully themed with antique furnishings — comfortably elegant accommodations for guests of residents and members. Guests can unwind from their busy day with a refreshing beverage at the bar, playing billiards with friends or simply relaxing in one of the cozy gathering places. In 1872, construction commenced on the Lighthouse that would guide captains navigating the shifting shoals of the Calibogue Sound. The Lighthouse’s 40-foot tower served mariners traveling around the northern tip of Daufuskie between 1873 to the 1930s. Today the Lighthouse serves as a guesthouse with two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and porch overlooking Calibogue Sound. It is also a sought-after venue for weddings, special events and private parties.

ISLE OF WONDER
Daufuskie is pristine, natural. A place found, not created, with deep connections to the natural world around us. What strikes you immediately is the quiet. Your senses awaken gradually. To dolphins at dawn. Crickets at dusk. And birds, by the thousands. Here is a serene pace and place worthy of our attention and appreciation. It is also an island steeped in history, and today, it is creating its own new chapter.
Discovering Daufuskie ... Tucked away down sandy lanes under the long arms of oaks draped with scarves of Spanish moss are all manner of curious diversions as unique as the island itself. An indigo dye boutique, metal crafters, distillers (no surprise), a vintner (surprise), a marvelous woodworks, and a farm where the entire community lends a hand. It’s an isle of wonder.

CONSIDER IT DELIVERED Think of this as a hands-free lifestyle, for everything, literally, is delivered by our valets to your door. Even to your refrigerator if you’re arriving or out playing. You’ll never lift a finger. Supplies, sundries, baggage, all make their way magically from the Embarkation Center on Hilton Head Island via the ferry and little trolley cars to your front door. Home delivery may be new to America, but it’s nothing new to us.

Two luxurious features of the Point’s transportation network are a Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes Sprinter van. Our drivers will squire you and your guests from both Hilton Head and Savannah airports to the Embarkation Center.

Bridges are so overrated. We like to say that you don’t have to take the ferry, you get to take the ferry. And in this regard, it’s pretty much impossible to miss the boat, for we have 18 round trips each and every day aboard a nine-boat fleet, including a high-speed water taxi available 24 hours a day. Harbour Town is a quick eight-minute jaunt from the Point, and the main Embarkation Center, the hub for parking, supplies and logistics, is but 30 minutes — a beloved few moments of silence on the water.
