Have you noticed that post Mathew, our beaches have widened, while areas near beach walls have eroded even further?. It's the natural evolution of our barrier island's migration path. Barrier Islands are very dynamic: they are constantly altered by storms, and they also react to the conditions that we create. Left alone the island's beaches would shift and replenish themselves, albeit in varying configurations. When we intervene, through diversion of water flow, revetments, jetties, or artificial dunes, we interfere with the sand supply. Hurricane Mathew with its winds, rains, and storm surges, exacted a huge toll on our island, especially as it came in tandem with the 'super moon' high tide. Areas with sea walls or jetties, created a resistance to the waves that triggered stronger energy, contributing to greater erosion at their bases, often undermining adjacent property they were erected to protect. Whereas the existing foreward beaches were further flattened by the waves, and sand from the neighboring areas was newly deposited. It is likely that a good amount came from Hilton Head's beaches. For more information, "Livng With the South Carolina Shore" by Neal, Blakeney, Pilkey and Pilkey, is an excellent resource.

2017 TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE The 2017 schedule is complete and can be found on the club website as well as a direct link in the Back 9 newsletter. Now is the time to note all of your favorite events on your 2017 schedule so you do not miss out! Here is a listing of our major events dates: March 17 – 18 Memorial Cup Member-Member, April 27 – 29 Men’s Invitational, September 29 – 30 Ladies’ Invitational, October 19 – 21 Mixed Invitational, October 28 – 29 Club Championships, and November 6 – 8 Pro-Am Invitational.
GOLF “TIP OF THE MONTH” Do you find yourself coming up short on your approach shots more often than normal this time of year? If so, you are probably not taking into account the cooler temperatures. When the temps are consistently below 60, not only do your muscles get tight and less flexible; the golf ball seems to not travel quite as far as well. So as you stand in the fairway deciding between which club to hit, always take the longer club this time of year! On those even colder and windy days, you may be best served to take two extra clubs. If you can put your ego aside and go with more club, you more than likely will reach more greens with your approach shots.
MEN’S INVITATIONAL REGISTRATION The Men’s Invitational will take place April 26 – 29 with the 26th date being the official practice round day. The registration for this event will begin sometime this month so be on the lookout. We expect another full field this year so be sure to get your team entered early so you don’t miss out on all the fun!!

Equestrian
'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the stalls,
the decorations were hung, ribbons, lights, and snow balls. The stockings were hung on the stalls doors with care, as the horses awaited for St. Nikolaus to be there'. So went the first annual Deck the Stalls event at the Equestrian Center! Member-formed teams each chose a horse's stall to decorate in order to receive a first place cash prize of $300. With varying Christmas and Winter themes, teams went above and beyond to create a magical winter wonderland that will be available for all to view at the Equestrian Center until after the New Year. After a reception and judging, first place congratulations went to Team Fawn, with second place to Team Seminole and third place awarded to Team Victor! Thank you everyone for a wonderful event and look forward to having another stellar turnout next year! Â

Your Happeningsin 2017 Thank you to the staff and members who contributed to Happenings in 2016. We shared fascinating member profiles, recipes from the Chef, green tips from the Environmental Committee, and spectacular stories of community building. Throughout our coverage we realized that there is so much more storytelling to do. For that reason, we plan to make Happenings a feature-rich quarterly print publication in 2017. You’ll still receive a monthly e-newsletter with a run-down of upcoming events by department. And the handy calendar will be inserted in your mailboxes.
Our goal is to provide you with more exciting editorial about Haig Point and give you a publication that you’ll be proud to share with family and friends. Because what’s happening at Haig Point is truly special!
