GOLF
THE FAIRWAY WOOD SHOT - Jay Garrick, PGA, Director of Golf There are many players that fear the Fairway Wood Shot because of the difficulty getting the ball airborne. This shot can be very challenging in the fact that the clubs are a bit longer in length than the irons, and have much less loft than the irons. However these clubs are essential to getting the most distance down the fairway and provide the most loft if hit correctly. The loft can range from 13 degrees up to 30 degrees, and once mastered can provide the confidence you need to deliver a great golf shot. In fact, as most of the membership know I have, and I am playing a 3,5,7,9, & even an 11. I personally think that players of all skill levels can create an advantage with these clubs. Once this skill is acquired, a player can produce a higher lofted shot from further away than a traditional iron. Continued next page

Jay’s Thoughts: Here are a few set up tips to ensure great fairway wood play: • Always a great grip, aim, and posture • Ball position located slightly left of center 2 inches inside the lead foot • Arms hanging straight down • Tempo must be maintained, not over swinging • Must hit down and through the ball (a divot is ok!)
• Maintain great balance throughout the swing with a strong finish

TENNIS
RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT The return of the service is one of the most important shots in the game, but do you have an effective return? Focus on these tips for a more dominating return. 1. Be ready: In tennis, the sport is played at the server's pace. If the server is ready to toss the ball up, the returner better be ready to receive it. Be alert and make sure you go through mental preparations well before you see the server step up to the line to serve. Once the ball is served, the point has started and there’s only time to react. 2. Position, position: A lot of beginners and intermediates don't know where to stand when they return. A good place to start is anywhere from a foot in front of the baseline to two feet behind it. The outside foot

is in full "swing!" Programs are offered for ages 4 – 17 and in all ability levels.
4. Short backswing: Unless the opposing serve is very weak giving you time to set up and hit a full forehand or backhand, you will want to focus on using a short backswing to hit your return. Use the server's power. A great return using a 50% shorter or more abbreviated backswing will be easier to hit

because it will be easier for you to time. You'll be using less of your own effort and more pace from the server. 5. Grips: Saving the toughest tip for last. The assumption here is that the returner uses different grips to hit a topspin forehand and topspin backhand, making a fast grip change more difficult

especially if you are rushed. As a general rule, most servers will attempt to hit towards the returner's backhand assuming that it's the weaker stroke. So, a good play by the returner would be to wait with a backhand grip expecting this to happen more often than not. More advanced players will never serve in a recognizable pattern and will mix up the placement of serves.

EQUESTRIAN
FEELING THE HEAT Keeping horses safe during South Carolina summer Due to the extreme conditions in the southern summer, there are some extra steps we take this time of year to keep our herd as comfortable as possible: 1. Staying Hydrated – During the summer months we scrub and refill troughs and buckets constantly, to make the water more enticing. We also supplement with electrolyte powders and salt blocks, to further increase hydration, as some horses aren’t naturally “good drinkers,” and need a little extra encouragement. Our entire team is trained on how to test for and treat dehydration, so that we can get it under control as quickly as possible and prevent more extreme issues. 2. Schedule Changes – We alter our schedules slightly to better suit our horses and riders. This means we start our day earlier and offer lessons and trail rides only in the morning, or occasionally in the evening if Continued next page

BOATING + OUTDOOR NEWS
STAYING SAFE ON THE WATER LIFE JACKETS ARE ESSENTIAL Good swimmers still need life jackets. When people fall off a boat, they may become disoriented, injured or unconscious. Life jackets can keep victims’ heads above water so they can breathe and be rescued more easily. Every child should wear a life jacket at all times when boating. Choose the right life jacket for the activities you will be doing. Double check to make sure the life jackets are U.S. Coast Guard approved and fit correctly: Hold your arms straight up over your head, ask a friend to grasp the tops of the arm openings and gently pull up; make sure there is no excess room above the openings and that the jacket does not ride up over your chin or face

FOOD + BEVERAGE HAPPENINGS
Dear Haig Point Members, Family, and Guests, Summertime in Napa Valley the vines experience incredible growth. If not for those tending to the vines they would grow unwieldly, and the fruit would lack flavor and complexity though it be abundant. Winemakers with the help of the vine dressers continually walk their property and inspect their vines. Oftentimes winemakers will drop fruit to the ground and trim back their vines to allow the fruit that remains to ripen and the flavors to concentrate. A good winemaker knows that it is not the abundance of the fruit but the quality that is most important to make great wine. Here at Haig Point in this summer season we are looking forward to great growth in the Food & Beverage department. We expect the days to be warm and the nights to be cool just like they are in Napa Valley. Like the winemakers we too will be trimming our fruit to allow what remains to concentrate in flavor and complexity. Our goal is that all of our Food & Beverage offerings at Haig Point are excellent and that your service and overall experience is exceptional. As always it is our pleasure to serve you our Haig Point Members, Family, and Guests. I welcome your feedback as we go on this journey together. Thank you, Michael Clarke Director of Food and Beverage

MOVING UP the CAREER LADDER The number one priority of the Marine Department is ensuring a safe
and enjoyable ferry experience for Members and guests. This is achieved through the commitment and dedication of our Marine staff. To keep attracting and maintaining quality Marine candidates, we have created the Marine Career Ladder program. The Marine Career Ladder is a professional skills development program that provides Boat Mates an opportunity to become Captains within one year of entering the program. Former Boat Mates Stephanie Hodge and Robert Stevens took advantage of this development opportunity and completed the program earlier this year. They are now licensed to operate any of our Haig Point ferry vessels as Captains following in the footsteps of previous program graduates: Captains Antonio Chalmers, Robert Levis, Joshua Eben and Chris Kennedy. Eligibility for the Marine Career Ladder program requires Boat Mates to have a minimum of 4-6 hours of training per shift for 360 days to be able to sit for the Coast Guard’s Inland Operators License exam. When passed, they will be licensed to operate vessels up to 100 tons. Interested candidates for the Marine Career Ladder program should reach out the Marlowe Williams, HR Director, for more information at mwilliams@haigpoint.com
