DOUG EGLY
Chief Executive Officer
Dear Member, Welcome to summer! We kicked off the season with a great, well-attended Memorial Day weekend. From the Ice Cream Social to the Low Country Boil, a good time was had by all. The Beach Club has opened for the season. On May 26, we celebrated another staff member’s 30 year anniversary at Happy Hour. Congratulations, LaTonya Lewis, Human Resource Manager. Members gathered for drinks and a buffet while families still enjoyed the pool on a warm late afternoon. Many members commented on the beautiful new landscaping and the overall ongoing improvements. The new decking will be enjoyed by members and guests during the Fourth of July holiday. In addition to golf and tennis, summer is the time to enjoy several other activities at Haig Point. At the Tennis and Fitness Center, water aerobics is in full swing at the adult pool, a great way to get exercise while cooling off in the pool. Late morning classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ron Gwyn’s Tiny Tots and Junior Tennis Academy programs began on May

The Equestrian Center will hold several children’s camps, including an Art Camp. Program begins the last week in June. In addition, summer is a great time to experience Wine and Ride which occurs twice a month or a ride on our vintage carriage to Haig Point. Call the Equestrian Center to schedule. We are eager to find a new Director of Golf as we continue a national search for the best suited candidate. We have interviewed several candidates and hope to have the position filled by July. We look forward to a great season in doing all we can to help create magical summer memories at Haig Point. Doug Egly, CEO

WHY THE AERIFICATION PROCESS Aerification achieves three important objectives, the GCSAA explains: • I t relieves soil compaction; • It provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green's roots; • A nd it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Over time, the traffic from golfer's feet (as well as mowing equipment) tends to compact the soil under the putting green. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. Without oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die.
HOW THE AERIFICATION PROCESS HAPPENS Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. In most cases, it's done by removing halfinch cores from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water that brings a resurgence of growth. The spaces are then filled with sand "topdressing" that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward.
Older greens often are constructed of soils with significant amounts of silt, clay and fine organic particles that are prone to compaction. Filling aerification holes with sand improves drainage and resists compaction. The periodic introduction of sand to a green's top layer can, over time, avoid or postpone expensive rebuilding or renovation of greens. Finally, growing of turf adds to a layer of organic matter on the surface. This layer, called thatch, is an accumulation of dead stems, leaves and roots. A little organic matter makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects. Topdressing with sand can prevent thatch buildup, and aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing layer and prevent an excess of thatch from becoming established.

GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH "You read the putt, but is your putter face square to that line!?!" One of the first putting skills to work on is alignment. If you're confident your ball and clubface are lined up with the read you've chosen, it'll free up your stroke. "Alignment Drill" Save a hotel key card and place it on a green so it indicates the correct putting line. Rest your ball on top of the key so its alignment mark matches the path. Then use the straight edge on the back of the card to square the putter's face to the line of putt. Now make your stroke. Your eyes can play tricks: You can think you've got everything lined up when you actually don't. Use this drill to recognize good alignment when you see it.
MERCHANDISE SPOTLIGHT Our June Monthly Golf Merchandise special will be 30% off all golf gloves and golf balls. No brand or quantity requirement!
