competed in our unique one-day tournament. The format for the event was a round-robin draw rather than the traditional single elimination tournament. This unique format created situations where the winners often were determined in the last matches of the day. Kudos to Ron Gywn, our Director of Tennis, for his ongoing winning service. The eight PGA TOUR Professionals, along with the RBC Wealth Management client group, enjoyed a glorious sunlit day at Haig Point on April 11. The weather could not have cooperated more and the Pros could not have been more satisfied with the event. Thank you to the Haig Point staff for their stellar performance; and, thank you to Mark McKniff, the volunteer coordinator, and the 41 member volunteers who assisted in guiding the players. To families who are looking for children’s summer activities, a reminder that at the end of June the Equestrian Center will begin offering summer camps. There will be a Kid’s Camp for ages 5 – 12, an Art Camp for ages 6+, an Outdoor Camp for ages 6+, and a Horse Camp for ages 8+. We are also pleased to offer something new, two person carriage

The Beach Club roofs have been replaced and the pool is now open for your enjoyment. Deck replacement and improvements to the bar will begin the second week of May. The Beach Club will officially open with food and beverage service on May 24. Year to date we have 12 real estate transactions and 7 homes under construction. Our marketing efforts are paying off with a significant increase in the number of potential members showing an interest in our community; we have booked 54 Discovery Experiences year to date. We now have a greater presence in the local real estate community, and our public relations have resulted in notable organizations booking their events at Haig Point. I, and the entire staff, look forward to serving you this season and helping you create a fun and memorable summer with family and friends. Doug Egly, CEO

DAUFUSKIE'S FIRST OYSTER REEF BUILD BY J E N N Y H E R SC H

S

Surrounded by oyster reefs and spartina grass, the world truly is our oyster on Daufuskie Island. Healthy reefs prevent erosion and improve water quality (one oyster filters up to 50 gallons of phytoplankton and sediment-filled water per day) while creating essential habitat for a wide variety of marine species and birds. To encourage the development of oysters on our shoreline, the SC Department of Natural Resources and SCORE (South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Program) sponsored Daufuskie’s first Oyster Reef Build by the community dock at Haig Point on Wednesday April 26, 2017. Twenty-five Haig Point members and island residents successfully completed SCORE’s 96th volunteer-built reef (comprised of 300 mesh bags of recycled oyster shell weighing a total of 9,000 pounds) with the invaluable support of the May River Oyster Company and DNR staff led by Michael Hodges. The new oyster reef at Haig Point will be monitored for growth, improved water quality, and habitat formation by the SC DNR and island volunteers twice per year. For more information about SCORE please visit http://score.dnr.sc.gov

“Oysters are the most tender and delicate of all seafoods. They stay in bed all day and night. They never work or take exercise, are stupendous drinkers and wait for their meals to come to them.” ~Hector Bolitho

GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH Having trouble getting out of the bunker? Try the “Splashing Sand Drill” to help give you confidence in the bunkers!

HEARTS OPEN GOLF FUNDRAISER Wednesday, May 3rd Kick-off party with cocktails, dinner, and live music at the Haig Point Embarkation Center on Hilton Head. Thursday, May 4th Golfers picked up by boat at the Haig Point Embarkation Center with complimentary breakfast served aboard. Golfers staying on Daufuskie Island will enjoy breakfast at the Haig Point Club.

“Splashing Sand Drill” Get into a bunker that is close to the green. Once in the bunker, set up like you are going to hit a bunker shot without a ball. Take several swings where you hit the sand and splash it onto the green. This will help reduce the anxiety of playing bunker shots.
