THE FACES OF SUMMER

Haig Point's successful summer internship program

BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME

All Equestrian offerings are returning to the Haig Point barn

This fall will be especially busy for our Membership. To spark your competitive spirit, we have the Golf Club Championship (October), the Pro-Am (November), and the Member-Member Match Play (December). Our Tennis Club Championship will also be in October. Of course, if you want to mix some ‘work in with your play,’ applications for positions on our governing committees will be considered this fall and the annual Board of Director’s

elections will be in December. I encourage everyone to get involved in our governance committees. The Membership will also be considering a proposed Long Range Plan for our Club and Community. We will be holding several Open Member Information Sessions to discuss the proposals.

The summer ended on a high note with the return to service of the Haig Point II ferry. She received a complete renovation and overhaul. I hope you enjoy the new design and facelift as much as I have.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Spring Cleaning in the Fall initiative. Employees have cleaned common grounds and work areas. While some projects will continue into the winter months, a fresher Haig Point is emerging.

On behalf of the entire employee family, I would like to thank each of you for making this a great place to work. It is a pleasure to serve you.

RETURNING

to HOME PORT

The timeline of the Haig Point II retrofit, as told by Captain Richard Inglis, Director of Transportation

The Haig Point II is a custom built fifty-five foot passenger vessel designed by Timothy Graul and built by Breaux Brothers Enterprises in Loreauville, Louisiana for International Paper Realty Corporation of South Carolina.

Two ferries where built as part of a comprehensive transportation system, meaning the docks, ramps, floating docks and luggage system were designed specifically for this application.

The boat measures: Length 55'. 2", Breadth 17'. l", Depth 6'.3". The Gross tonnage is 39 tons. The net tonnage is 31 tons and the boats dry weight is 30 tons.

Originally licensed to carry 100 passengers and three crew with five, four by six luggage carts, the boat went on to serve the club from late 1987 until July 1, 2019. The boat made tens of thousands of crossings and by conservative estimate transported over 1.6 million passenger in it's 32 year span.

Over the years much speculation ensued over how long a fifty-five foot ferry could operate on partially protected waters. A wide variety of answers were gathered from the experts so the Club had to determine its own strategy. The decision was made to refit the boat to increase the service life to fifty years. With that in mind the boat was rebuilt and is expected to remain in service until it is replaced sometime around 2037.

page | 4
page | 5

This strategy was developed through the work of management and the Transportation committee and the formation of the "the ten year plan."

The boat was taken out of service on July 1, 2019. The boat was hauled out of the water on September 17, 2019 at Steven's Shipyard in Charleston, South Carolina. The boat was relaunched July 1, 2021 and brought back to Hilton Head on July 31, 2021.

During that 13-month period the boat was stripped of all machinery, wiring, plumbing and furnishings and every aspect of the hull and super structure was inspected and repaired to like new condition.

Jonathan Soja with Gibbs-Cox naval architects redesigned the propulsion and machinery plans.

Rob Zavatsky redesigned the passenger spaces. The passenger spaces were redesigned to afford the latest in passenger comfort complete with commuter work counters and a space for a wheelchair. The materials and final seat plans were provided by CITI seats on the upper deck and UES out of Everett WA, a firm that supplies commercial vessel interiors for boats all over the world. Over 25 surface, fabric and accent pieces in the passenger spaces yield the ultimate in modern aesthetics and passenger comfort.

From August 1, 2021 to July 1, 2022 the interior, electronics, stability testing and final Coast Guard inspections.

GOLF

The Set Up

In order to hit a good bunker the set up becomes extremely important. The stance must be slightly open, ball position placed off the heel of the lead foot, good knee bend, and arms hanging straight down. It’s always a great idea to wiggle your feet into the sand, and widen your stance a bit so that you can gain stability. To hit a higher, softer shot a player will move the bottom hand over to make for a weak grip. This will allow the club face to remain towards the sky through impact.

The Swing

The swing in the bunker must be at very sharp angles. This means that during the move away, the wrists must hinge abruptly, and on the way to the sand the club must enter behind the ball about 2 inches. At this point it is critical that the club accelerates through the sand and on up to the finish with force! The divot should be about the size of a dollar bill. If you make great divot, you’ll hit a great bunker shot.

TENNIS

HELPING TO KEEP THE SCORE STRAIGHT

One of the most common complaints about pickleball is keeping the score correct. So here is a great way to know whether a team's score should be odd or even.

When the game begins, notice which player is on the court's right or even side. When that person is on the right court, their score should be even; when on the left side, the score for that team will be odd.

page | 11

TENNIS

DID YOU KNOW?

Here are three facts about the great game of tennis that I bet you did not know.

1. The game originated in 12th century France as 'Jeu de Paume (game of the palm). The original game was played with just the hand, no racquet.

2. I usually get many questions concerning the scoring tennis uses, you know, 15-30 or 40-15. Did you know the scoring system was created by using a court-side clock?

Players would only use the minute hand and divide the clock's sixty minutes into four segments; the first segment was 15 minutes or 15, the second was 30, and the third and final was 45, which was shortened to 40.

3. Why do we say "love" when someone has not scored a point in a game? Again we can thank the French for the word "love." It's about an egg or goose egg, as we sometimes say, when a player or team lacks a single point. L'oeuf is French for "egg," So if you want to be accurate, you should now say l'oeuf-15.

LABOR DAY PARTIES

Over the Labor Day Weekend, the award-winning Haig Point Tennis and Pickleball Center held two fun events: the US Open Round Robin, and the Labor Day Pickleball Party. The events featured great tennis and was followed by a delicious ice cream social. Thanks to all that played!

HAIG POINT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Club Championship season has arrived. In the month of October, two championships will be decided. We start the fun off with the Pickleball Club Championship, followed closely by the Tennis Club Championship. Entrants will receive unique welcome gifts; winners and finalists will receive great prizes. If you would like to play either event but don’t have a partner, contact the Center and we will find one for you. Contact the Tennis and Pickleball Center for more information and to register.

EQUESTRIAN

BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME

An update on our Equestrian Program

As the seasons begin to change and the temperatures simmer down, we would like to update our membership on some exciting transitions that are occurring in the Equestrian Department. As most of you are aware, we have recently made the difficult decision to discontinue our lease of the Melrose Stables and Sportsman’s Lodge and consolidate our business into one location at the Haig Point Equestrian Center.

While this is not a situation we anticipated being in, we are looking forward to the opportunities that this move will allow us in regards to increasing equestrian offerings to our growing audience of Members and guests. Consolidating our staff, horses and resources into one location will provide us with more availability for lessons, trail rides, clinics and special events, focusing primarily on Members who would like to be more involved in our program. Please stay tuned for announcements regarding updated offerings during this

page | 14

exciting transitional period. We are so looking forward to the new faces that this change brings to the barn and encourage anyone interested in getting involved to stop by the equestrian center for a chat, or email csistek@haigpoint.com for more information.

One common concern that many people have had since we began discussing the idea of combining our trail, lesson and boarding programs is how we will be able to fit all of the horses into one facility. Do we have room for them all? Where will they go if we don’t? How do we find them new homes? Luckily for us, even though we did unfortunately need to downsize our herd by a few horses, we have found them loving forever homes where they will spend the rest of their days being spoiled rotten and living a stress free, semi-retired life. Zeus and Magic, both previously trail horses who resided at the Melrose Stables, made the trip off of Daufuskie at the end of August, and are now living their best lives. Magic, a small but ornery

bay Quarter Horse, has found the perfect home complete with a little girl of his very own, not too far away in Ridgeland, SC. Zeus, a beautiful cremello Tennessee Walking Horse, had a far longer trek home, travelling all the way to Boston, MA where he will be living with a former Haig Point Equestrian department employee, who he shared an incredible bond with. While it was sad to see them leave, we truly could not have hoped for better situations for either of these sweet guys and wish them long and happy lives with their new families!

MEET THE HERD: FAWN

Age: 27 years old Breed: Appaloosa Color: Buckskin

Personality: Although Fawn is the oldest member of our herd, she does not act or look her age! Most people don’t even believe us when we tell them how old she is! Fawn has been retired from advanced lessons, but continues to teach our newest riders the basics at the walk and trot.

Likes: Sunbathing with her best friends, Prada and Georgia.

From left to right: Zeus with Equestrian Director, Claire Sistek, who has a soft spot for him, as they arrived on Daufuskie just a few days apart almost five years ago! Zeus had a comfortable trip home to Boston with lots of friends in this spacious trailer! Magic, enjoying a ride with former Haig Point employee Matti Burns, who just so happens to be Zeus’s new mom in Boston!

FOOD + BEVERAGE HAPPENINGS

As we look ahead to the fall season we have tons of fun activities. October 8th - 10th is the Meals, Music, and Muses weekend. Our sales and marketing team worked very hard to get James Beard Award Winner Chef Alexander Smalls to curate this weekend. We have Claire Smith from Gregory James Winery who will be at the Saturday Night Wine Dinner. And a big thanks to Haig Point Member, Jan Ross who will be creating a work of art in real time during the dinner.

Monday night the 10th we have Brews and Brats with Grammy Award winning songwriters Wendell Mobley and Tim Nichols. Lincoln and South Brewery will be bringing some of their beer selection as well. This is going to be a really fun event on our Beach Club Deck.

We also have a Wine Dinner on the calendar on Wednesday December 7th when Martin Ray Winery will be joining us for a night of delightful food and wine. There will also be secondary pricing available for those who would like to come enjoy the dinner but not the wine.

Our hope is to keep the Beach Club Deck open for as long as the weather and light allow. We will be trying to mirror the hours of operation of the Calibogue Club

as long as we can. Some of the most beautiful days and nights of the year are during the fall season and we want to take advantage of that.

My family and I are looking forward to experiencing our Haig Point traditions alongside you. This will be my first year with the School Fall Fest, Adult Halloween Party, Fall Pig Roast, Thanksgiving Brunch, Teen Night, Holiday Decorating, Breakfast with Santa, Caroling on the Beach, the Christmas Eve Service, and New Year’s Eve.

My team are I are committed to providing you, your families, and guests the absolute best experience possible in this coming season. In this effort I’m so very thankful to work alongside such incredible people. Judith Govea and Lisa Garrick have been such a great help to me. Chef Taylor, Chef Ian, and the whole back and front of the house team have been wonderful.

It is the pleasure of our whole team of hospitality professionals to serve you our Haig Point members, your families, your guests, and our fellow Haig Point team. As always I am open to any and all feedback and desire to hear from you our members.

THE FACES of SUMMER

Each year Haig Point sponsors a Summer Internship Program that introduces select college students to the Private Club industry. Given the impact of the “Great Resignation” on the local job market, the program was significantly beneficial to the Club. Not only did it allow college interns an opportunity to learn about Haig Point, it provided the Club with a pipeline of professionals eager to work and develop the skills needed in their desired industry creating a win-win scenario.

This year, four college students were selected to participate in the program.
