Spring 2019

Happenings from the Chief Dear Member Spring has arrived and so begin the season’s activities and events. Golf dominates April with the Masters, RBC Heritage, and the Men’s Invitational scheduled for the end of the month. Tennis kicks off with the Daufuskie Island Adult Tennis Championship, spring Bocce is in full swing as are the increasingly popular Dr. Palermo dance classes. With all this activity, April is a terrific time to invite family and friends to Haig Point. Now with Pizza Mondays and Taco Tuesdays, entertaining has become even easier for members. The Heritage Oyster Roast is another dining event to look forward to and this year we will close Heritage week with a traditional Easter Sunday brunch on the beach followed by an egg hunt and kids’ activiites. Children are also welcome to Kids’ Camp this month!

April weather is perfect for family and guests to sign up for a Ride ‘N Wine excursion. Riding experience is not required - all are welcome to participate. While at the Equestrian Center, riders will have the opportunity to shop at the Equestrian Tack Shop which offers stylish clothing and gift items whatever your sport. A great place for guests to pick up a Haig Point memento. It is the responsibility of every member to participate in determining Haig Point’s future, hence, I want to thank all members who supported the Club by choosing to vote on the Cottage Program. The Board and I, and all who support the program, are very excited about the type of experience the Cottages will provide members, guests, and prospective members. We are equally looking forward to missed revenue from golf, food and beverage and lodging, which the Cottages

will promote. As in the addition of high-speed internet service and the expansion of the Beach Club, the Cottages are yet another step in the right direction toward making life better for our Members and sustaining the life style we enjoy on our incredible island without a bridge. I want to announce that the Environmental Committee has teamed up with Scott Hamm, Director of Golf Course and Grounds Maintenance, to create an environmental plan that will support our community’s commitment to maintain the natural integrity and health of the island’s marshland and shoreline. Please refer to the Environmental Committee minutes posted on the website to stay informed. On the topic, a reminder to participate in the oyster reef build taking place on April 2, 2019. This month we have yet another Member wedding taking place at Haig Point. On behalf of the entire staff and myself, we wish the newlyweds a happy and prosperous future and look forward to seeing them next year on their anniversary.
In closing, with spring break and summer around the corner, I want to remind you that at Haig Point we practice safety first. Children are not allowed to drive golf carts under any circumstances with or without an adult in the cart. Please see page 15 of the Policies, Rules & Guidelines found on the Club Business page of the website under Documents & Forms. The same laws that apply to driving cars in South Carolina apply to driving carts on Daufuskie Island.
Thank you in advance for keeping our community safe by avoiding unnecessary accidents.

As of October 2014, more than 25,000 volunteers have used more than 1,100 tons of shell to build 225 reefs at 69 reef sites along the South Carolina coast. The SCDNR is committed to collecting, recycling and preparing oyster shell for re-entry into the salt march and estuaries. Oyster

Volunteers arrive to a huge pile of shell, shovels, 5-gallon buckets, PVC pipes and a spool of mesh webbing. The webbing is rolled out and cut in 3 foot sections and a knot is tied at one end. The mesh “bag” is slipped onto the PVC pipe. Buckets are

with many shells going straight to landfills. SCDNR makes up that deficit by purchasing shell from out of state, a need that could be eliminated if SCDNR could recycle 20-25% of the shell available. Currently, SCDNR is only able to capture 10% of the shell available for recycling within the state.” (from the SCDNR website)
Another way that oyster shell is used for restoration is returning it to the estuary. Piles of shell are loaded onto a barge and with a hose are blown off into the water in predetermined locations where harvesting is allowed. The recreational oyster harvesting season is October 1 - May 15. Farm-raised oysters can now be harvested year-round. Recreational harvest of shellfish (clams, oysters and other molluscan bivalves) requires a South Carolina Saltwater Fishing License - the proceeds fund this important work. See the SCDNR website for further information about public oyster beds and sustainable harvesting techniques. The “washed shell” - worn and bleached white from the sun that is found along our shores are protected and are part of the fragile and irreplaceable estuarine ecosystem. This shell has been in place for centuries, some from Daufuskie’s oyster industry (1880s - 1950s) while others are among the last vestiges of the native tribes that called Daufuskie home. The oyster reef at Haig Point has been monitored for growth by the DNR. They have deemed our reef a success and determined that a new section will be built in April of 2019. -Jenny Hersch

2. Clean, dry shells are shoveled and bagged into mesh plastic bags at various “bagging events. 3. Approximately 300 shell bags are stacked onto pallets and loaded onto a DNR truck. The truck travels to Alljoy Landing in Bluffton.

MOVEMENT – THE KEY TO GREAT DOUBLES One characteristic of great doubles players is movement particularly at the net. Good doubles players will use movement to put pressure on their opponents. Try these three ideas the next time you are at the net to pressure your opponents. 1. When your partner has hit a quality shot to your opponent (one that puts your opponent on the defense) take one step toward the ball. This will allow you to move forward and then move on a diagonal path to the ball. 2. When moving across, make sure to shuffle across with shoulders parallel to the net. This will allow you to cover your backhand if the ball goes behind you. 3. Poach at the feet not the hands. Too often when we poach, we hit the ball chest level, near the opponent’s racquet, and they can reflex the ball back for a winner.

These lot and home packages will be pre-approved by the Haig
2018 by welcoming accomplished new builders and announcing
Point ARB, saving buyers months of planning and thousands of dollars in architectural fees. Five homes ranging from 2100 to 3500 sqft will be available for buyers to virtually tour. Three dimensional exterior and interior renderings will be used to help clients immerse themselves in the home. It will be possible to close on a property and start construction within a month. You will see viewing stands and Southern Living Home signage on several of our club-owned lots throughout the community. We’ll launch the program with a kick-off party and realtor tour this spring.
