Happenings from the Chief Dear Member I want to provide an update on the long awaited rebuild of our community dock. As you know, the community dock was severely damaged during Hurricane Matthew. Since the hurricane, we researched several design options one of which was doubling the size of the dock. The expansion proposal spent over a year in the permitting process, yet in the end was denied by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). We designed a new plan that was very similar to the original dock. The plan was

approved and we received the building permit last month from the South Carolina Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. This is the first accomplishment in a four step approval process. Next we must again submit design to the USACE for them to approve and issue their own permit. Subsequent to that, the proposal needs to be submitted for final review to the SC Board of Health and Environmental Control. The new dock will consist of a 4’ x 32’ ramp leading to a 10’ x 12’ ramp landing float. From one side of the landing float will be constructed a 10’ x 75’ floating dock, on the

other side, a 10’ x 125’ floating dock. Work is scheduled to begin in the fall. I am very excited to be finalizing the improvement of yet one more of our amenities. The new dock will give members and future members another valuable asset at Haig Point. Nancy and I wish all our members, and their families, a fun, memorable and safe 4th of July!

Daufuskie Remembered in Images A NEW BOOK FOR ARCADIA PUBLISHING’S IMAGES OF AMERICA SERIES: DAUFUSKIE ISLAND BY JENNY HERSCH AND SALLIE ANN ROBINSON

It started in 2013 when Adam and I bought our house in Haig Point. Ever curious about the island and the Lowcountry, I joined the board of the Daufuskie Island Conservancy, took the SC Master Naturalist program, and volunteered with local environmental organizations to get to know the area. After visiting the Daufuskie History Museum, the cemeteries, the lighthouses, the church, the schools, looking out at the water through the remains of tabby slave quarters, driving down dirt roads past trees and homes that were more than 100 years old, I wanted to learn more about the cultural history of the island as well. I found historic images online and was able to trace them back to their photographers. fig 1.

Thanks to the generosity of Haig Point dog owners and special “angels,” Haig Point’s new dog park became a reality - a gift to the community, funded by donors, not by dues. Located in the community park, the approximately 14,000 square foot doggy play space is more than what its name implies. It is a social center for members, a work-out facility for dogs, and an entertainment park for everyone. Socially, it is a place where dog owners congregate and make new friends. Everyone agrees

Thanks to your plentiful donations over $2,800 was raised to help the area’s rescue dogs and cats. Thanks to all who participated.

SLIDE INTO IT! This is such a great time to watch professional tennis: in late spring and early summer the clay court season takes over - quickly followed by the grass court season. In both seasons, the ability to hit an effective slice is imperative. When you are hitting a slice think about these tips: First of all, understand an effective slice is an aggressive shot. Too often the shot is hit as a short choppy motion. The best slice backhands and forehands are hit with an almost level swing, the slightly open racquet face will create the spin. Secondly, drive the ball with the legs. Finishing with the weight on the front foot will result in a heavier, more aggressive shot. To make sure your racquet takes the shortest route to the ball, keep your racquet above the water.

S UMM ER HAPPENI NG S | HA I G P OIN T Real Estate Marketing Update By Adam Martin

Summer M A R K ET I N G U P D AT E

Haig Point home sales have continued on a record pace through the second quarter of 2018. As you can see in Table 1 metrics in every category have improved. In 2018, we’ve welcomed 12 new families to Haig Point, six of whom visited for the first time on a Discovery Experience within the past 18 months. You can see in Charts 1 and 2 home sale values compared with other Lowcountry private communities, ranking Haig Point third in median home sales price and second in median home sales price per square foot. In addition, TABLE 1

the increase in existing home sales prices are spurring

have been sold and one more is under contract. Two of the home sites are HPCCA-owned, thus resulting in new Haig Point Signature Members. CHART 1

CHART 2

NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION Two new Haig Point Showcase Homes by Osprey Construction are slated for completion in June. 9 Osprey Place and 32 Mongin Run are beautiful turn-key homes designed and furnished by Barefoot Interiors, an Atlanta-based firm that’s part of the Coastal Living/Southern Living design network. In addition, we are excited to welcome two new home builders to our preferred network. Lowcountry Creations, owned by Charleston-based contractor Kenneth Calcutt, finished their first Daufuskie Island home this June. And Sandcastle Construction with the father/son duo of Tommy and Tyler Smith are re-assembling a Haig Point team. Sandcastle built over a dozen Haig Point homes in the 90s and early 2000s. After a nearly decade-long hiatus they have seen our momentum and are committed to a return. More information on each is available in the Builder Resource Center within the back offices of the Embarkation on Hilton Head and online at www.haigpoint.com/homes/build.
