FOUNDATION FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the Summer 2018/19 edition of Foundation News, the quarterly bulletin to help telegraph our stories and achievements to the growing Haileybury community. As the calendar year, once again, draws to a close, it is an ideal time to reflect on the purpose of philanthropy and the enormous difference it makes to those it provides for. Whilst all foundations such as ours are registered charities for deductible gifts, for the purposes of this article, I make a distinction between ‘charity’ and ‘philanthropy’. In this sense, ‘charity’ would be more clearly defined as ‘giving for people’s immediate needs’ – such as food, water and health – whilst ‘philanthropy’ would be more distinctive for its focus ‘giving for long term betterment’. In fact, the literal meaning of philanthropy – ‘the love of mankind’ – provides us with a valuable clue, in this regard. Members of the Haileybury community could perhaps relate to this from a different angle:
THE GIFT OF TIME
SUMMER 2018/19
NEWS
we would justifiably feel we have already ‘given’ towards the immediate needs of the School – whether as a student, a staff member or a parent – and might have yet to understand or consider the purpose and need to ‘give for its long term betterment’, especially when it is living through such a period of success and strength. Yet, the most eminent educational institutions around the world, irrespective of whether they were founded with an endowment or not, only remain so because they have built up almost impregnable Foundations through the philanthropy of their communities. With such internal financial strength to draw from, each generation of leaders is thus able to cope with all manner of economic and government cycles and award scholarships in perpetuity to talented students who would not have otherwise been able to attend. Haileybury did not have the luxury of a founding endowment, nor did it have a Foundation for its first 118 years. It has thus had to ride through some very challenging economic and government cycles through good management, whilst relying on the ‘kindness of strangers’ for the vast majority of its growth and progress, with only occasional support from friends.
As the 2018 Australian School of the Year, with over 5000 students across multiple campuses, it is time Haileybury had the Foundation it deserves – its current strength merely proves it is worth preserving – and we all know that economic and government cycles are omnipresent. Whether your preference is to assist students who would otherwise not be able to attend Haileybury (the Scholarship Fund) or help secure the buildings and facilities it needs to provide such an education (the Building Fund), any such tax deductible donation would help secure Haileybury’s future. NEIL SUTCLIFFE CHAIRMAN, HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION
The Haileybury Foundation is succeeding through the generosity of many. That generosity comes through gifts of time, resources, money and bequests. The Foundation would like to thank the many volunteers who do so much across diverse areas of the School including:
Helping maintain past student’s relationships with the School through the Old Haileyburians Association
Helping students with their reading through the Junior School Reading program
Serving on the College Council or Foundation Board and their various subcommittees.
Assisting with the upkeep of the Heritage and Archives office Helping to preserve the history of the School Meticulously covering books in the School’s Libraries Helping to cater for hungry students at sporting events and assisting with scoring and umpiring Bringing lovers of music and drama together at concerts and performances Fundraising for causes both inside and outside our School gates Holding friend-raising events that bring together the parents of our students and incorporate them into the life of the School Managing the Second Hand Uniform Shops
At least 350 members of our Haileybury community choose to give by regularly volunteering across many areas of the School. Every year Haileybury volunteers contribute in excess of 10,000 hours. Haileybury could not achieve all that it does – for its students, families, and the wider community without volunteer support. Thank you. SCOTT DORAN VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT
HAILEYBURY COMMUNITY MEMBERS CHANGING LIVES The annual Brian ‘Weary’ Clark Club luncheon was held for the ninth time recently at the Sandringham Yacht Club. On an amazing day, we were privileged to welcome over 165 members of the Haileybury community to this ever-growing luncheon that celebrates those who have been graduates of Haileybury for 50 or more years. Earlier in the day, close to 40 members of the Class of 1968 GWYNNE COX enjoyed morning tea with their fellow 50 year graduates, before embarking on a tour of Haileybury Castlefield, led by Vice Principal Community Engagement and Advancement, Scott Doran. It was wonderful to see Gweneth Clark, widow of Brian Clark in attendance as well as Sue Brown and her daughter, Wendy Lane. Tributes were read out for prominent members of the Haileybury community who sadly passed away in 2018 – Bill Trueman, Jim Brown, John Lindley Pilley, Barrie Johns and John Bolton. The Clark Club luncheon provides us with the opportunity to thank those in attendance who are changing the lives of Haileybury students through their contributions to Haileybury Foundation.
We are incredibly thankful to: • William Buckland (’40) for his support through the William Buckland Foundation of two indigenous students attending our Berwick campus • Gwynne Cox, wife of the late Ian Cox (’47) for her support of a young student from Brighton who recently lost his father • Robin Fildes (’58) for supporting a student commencing her studies in Year 11 at City in 2019 under the Robin Fildes Scholarship. Members of the Clark Club are outstanding supporters of the Haileybury Foundation and in particular, the Winged Heart Society, Haileybury’s bequest society. A bequest to Haileybury makes a significant impact into the future, beyond your lifetime. Bequests are a wonderful way to make a difference to a student’s life – a student who would not ordinarily have had the opportunity to attend Haileybury. By leaving a bequest to Haileybury you will have provided a lasting legacy and provided a student with an amazing opportunity.

With the assistance of the Haileybury Building Fund as managed by the Haileybury Foundation, this much loved facility of over 35 years is being given an exciting redevelopment with the installation of new seating throughout.
HAILEYBURY... TAKE YOUR SEAT
Each valued member of the Haileybury Community is invited to contribute a tax deductible gift for ‘Haileybury... Take Your Seat’, an opportunity to support the Haileybury Foundation by recognising those connected to Haileybury – a loved one, student, staff member or community member, in naming a seat. Each $500 donation will allocate a named plaque to a seat in Aikman Hall for the life of the refurbishment. An exciting opportunity is available to each member of the Haileybury Community to help secure Haileybury’s future and become part of its history! Constructed in 1982, through the generosity of past generations, Aikman Hall is the main
focal point of Haileybury’s Performing Arts and serves all of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses as the School’s main auditorium. Located at Haileybury Keysborough, the hall is utilised for assemblies, musicals, concerts, dramatic productions, speech nights and graduations, among other community activities.
