From the Chairman Contents
On behalf of your Foundation Board and Executive team, I welcome you to our Impact Report for 2022.
As you will have read recently, Haileybury had one of the most successful years in its history, not least in its outstanding academic success. Alongside that success, the School now offers such an array of extra-curricular experiences for students that the combination makes for an excellent Foundation scholarship package.
In a similar vein, am delighted to announce that Haileybury Foundation experienced one of its most successful years since its own founding in 2010, raising over $800,000 in donations from living benefactors alone and supporting, with assistance from the School, scholarships to 23 worthy beneficiaries, as well as providing the funds for some more building initiatives.
Undoubtedly, the highlight in 2022 for the Foundation and for the Haileybury community, was our inaugural Giving Day, which raised sufficient funds from
hundreds of donors to commence a further two scholarships in 2023. Not only was the day a financial success but it brought out the best in terms of community spirit and engagement – it bodes well for the future.
As I have written throughout 2022, we have a clear vision and objective to achieve by the end of our second Foundation decade, being “50 and 50 by 30” – that is, to achieve a combined corpus (with bequests) of $50 million and funding at least 50 scholarships by 2030. As you read through our latest Impact Report, I trust you will observe how this vision is gradually coming to fruition, which will create a meaningful, successful and perpetual Foundation.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members for their time, efforts and insights; our Executive team for their creativity, hard work and persistence; and, most importantly, to thank our 2022 donors for your continued generosity and philanthropy.
Neil Sutcliffe Chairman, Haileybury FoundationFrom the Vice Principal
For 131 years of its history, Haileybury has relied on the generosity of its community to develop and sustain the School, and on behalf of the Haileybury Foundation, we extend our deep appreciation to our community of donors for the positive impact you continue to make on the lives of the students at Haileybury.
Like generations of students who have benefitted from the generosity of our past bearers, so too will future generations benefit from gifts made today. The ongoing renewal of our great School and increased scholarship opportunities from recent gifts are already making an impact and are clearly visible across the School.
The Haileybury Foundation’s inaugural Giving Day in August exceeded all expectations with over 150 members of the Old Haileyburians Association raising in excess of $180,000 to establish the Haileybury 130 Scholarships. These scholarships will provide academic, co-curricular and service learning opportunities for promising and capable students, regardless of circumstance or background, for years to come.
From the success of our first Giving Day, the Haileybury Foundation look to conduct other Giving Days in the future. This will provide a wonderful opportunity for all members of the Haileybury community to contribute to future scholarships and renewal of our properties. look forward to contributing with you all to these important days.
Our community’s desire to make a positive difference to the lives of students for the past 131 years has been one of Haileybury’s greatest strengths. With your support, 2022 was another record-breaking year with $809,700 raised through the contributions of 1,648 donors. It is a privilege to watch the culture of philanthropy continue to grow at Haileybury and we extend our deepest gratitude for your support.
Every gift, no matter how big or small, makes a difference.
You are making a difference.

The 2022 Haileybury Foundation Impact Report details the significant difference that is being made for our students via scholarships, buildings and library through the support of the Haileybury community.
2022 was a record-breaking year for the Haileybury Foundation. Our Scholarship Fund recorded the highest ever donations thanks largely due to the successful Giving Day held in August. Additionally, our Building Fund, which continues to deliver interesting and impactful projects for our students across all four campuses, received the second largest number of donations in history. This is in part thanks to our parents who so generously contribute to our Voluntary Building Fund on a quarterly basis.
In 2022, the following new scholarships were advertised and granted through a competitive selection process undertaken and overseen by Haileybury Foundation staff and individual donors:
> Gerry Hazlitt Scholarship (Former 1st X1 cricketers)
> Australian Afghani Scholarship
> Fighting Fifties Scholarship (1957–59 alumni members)
> 2 × Indigenous Scholarships – Darwin
> Mark Reynolds Memorial Scholarship
> 2 × Haileybury 130 Scholarships (Haileybury Foundation Giving Day)
> Emma Polacsek Scholarship (Alf Uhlherr OH 1983)
Details of the impact of the Fighting Fifties Scholarship and the Haileybury 130 Scholarships provided by the Giving Day are contained in this report.
As our Foundation enters its 15th year, it is plain to see the impact that donor generosity is having on the lives of boys and girls who would never ordinarily have dreamt of a Haileybury education. Twelve students have now graduated from Haileybury thanks to a Haileybury Foundation scholarship and as we enter the 2023 school year, 28 students will commence or continue their education with this benefit. And one only has to look around our magnificent campuses to see the impact that our community of donors have made in a physical sense.
Your support of Haileybury Foundation provides us with a significant “value add”. No doubt, Haileybury would be a strong entity today with income provided through School fees. However, the opportunities provided to students through a commitment to philanthropy makes Haileybury the wonderful institution that it is today. Thank you.

Charlie Gillott (OH 2022) was a recipient of the Ian W. Cox Scholarship, gifted to him following the passing of Ian Cox, 1948 Haileybury School Captain and former Chairman of Haileybury Council. Charlie formed a close alliance with Ian’s widow, Gwynne Cox, also a well-connected member of our community. Charlie would regularly write to Gwynne to recount his experiences at Haileybury and discuss his plans for future study and employment.
In 2023 Charlie will be studying a Bachelor of Audio Engineering. He comments that “It’s pretty exciting to be able to study a real passion of mine in a completely new environment”. In his free time Charlie chooses to play music, cook and socialise with friends. He has recently enjoyed driving his late father’s Jeep Cherokee, the first time the car has been on the road in over seven years.
Charlie has strong aspirations for the future. In the next 10 years he would love to be working in the music scene as an audio engineer for recording music, or writing for film, something he also enjoys.
Charlie has never held back on the immense gratitude he has in receiving a Haileybury Foundation scholarship. “I could discuss my gratitude for paragraphs, but with months to think and look back on my time under Ms Cox’s wing, being the beneficiary meant opportunity. Being a beneficiary meant that could go to school and be myself.
The program allowed me and other students to really love our time in school and truly believe and strive for our own perspectives of success.”
Haileybury Foundation scholarships are awarded based on equity, and primarily for students who would never have dreamt of a Haileybury education. In Charlie’s case, after the passing of his father it was unlikely that he would continue at the School. The gift of a bequest from Ian Cox allowed him to finish his education at a world class institution.
In reflecting on his time at Haileybury, Charlie explains that it will always be “a pivotal point in my life. There were times where I struggled and times where I felt an overwhelming sense of achievement. There were times where I woke up and could not be bothered to do a SAC that day and times where I could not wait to get into class. Being a student at Haileybury gave me so much purpose”. Through Haileybury, Charlie believes that he has learnt to be a better friend and that while he has a purpose in his life through his university degree, it was the informal learning at Haileybury that has taught him a great deal. He sums up Haileybury as “a community where hopeful students become confident people”.
Charlie hopes that one day he and his family can assist a student in the same way that he has benefitted from his Haileybury Foundation scholarship. His life has been changed through the wonderful legacy left by Ian Cox … and Charlie will be forever grateful.
Fighting Fifties Scholarship
But it was clear by the late 1950’s that the seeds for the School’s future expansion had been sown.
suburban boys-only school based entirely on the Castlefield site in Brighton. Under the guidance of Headmaster Sholto Black, it had recovered from near extinction during the years of World War II.
Enrolment numbers rapidly grew, and by 1959 were approaching 1000. The arrival of David Bradshaw as Head in 1954 saw an increased emphasis on formality, discipline, religious observance and academic performance. The Cadets and Pipe Band grew in prominence. Co-curricular involvement in Scouts, public speaking, and music and drama increased. Premierships were won in swimming and athletics, and there was an improvement in cricket and football performances. These things led to an invitation to join the prestigious Associated Public Schools in 1957. Haileybury struggled to make an impact in its first couple of years in the APS.
Robin Fildes AM and Don McQueen (both OH 1958) had wonderful times at Haileybury in the 1950’s. Don loved sport, especially football and cricket, eventually playing in the First XI in 1958, while Robin, also a sportsman, enjoyed that the School kept growing, “always looking to put another wing on”. Both enjoyed Cadet life and can recall Cadet camps and taking their 303 rifles home on either their bikes or public transport!
Robin and Don came up with an idea for a scholarship to be gifted by Old Haileyburians who had graduated from Haileybury in the late 1950’s. Don noted that “It was from reading a previous Foundation edition noticing several class participants that the thought came to me that our year group could consider doing something worthwhile on a similar basis”.
Robin came up with the name of the scholarship – the Fighting Fifties – noting that all donors were from that era and that they were still fighting fit. This group had enjoyed terrific times while at the School and in their alumni years their friendships had grown. Over many years there have been many 1957–1959 alumni group luncheons arranged by another wonderful and generous Old Haileyburian, Kevin Nixon (OH 1957).
A criteria for the Fighting Fifties Scholarship was established by Robin and Don. As the group had all gone to school at the Brighton campus they were very keen for the recipient to be educated there. Additionally, the group were keen to be able to provide this opportunity for a girl, noting the huge success that the School had achieved in girls’ education.
The successful recipient of the scholarship, following a series of interviews, was Tiahna Lau. Tiahna commenced at Haileybury in Term 1A in 2022. Tiahna joins us from Bentleigh Secondary College with an ambition to be a lawyer or psychologist. She is an avid soccer player and admires the work of not-for-profit organisation Oz Child, with whom she has had dealings. Tiahna’s family do not have the financial capability to send her to Haileybury. It was her tenacity and ambition that convinced the interview panel that Tiahna would be positively impacted by an education at our School.
Don wishes to advise that the fund is still open for members of the 1950’s era who may wish to participate or increase their commitment. He concludes that “The Fighting Fifties group would be delighted if our vision could be followed by other class groups to again provide an opportunity for someone to have the advantage of a Haileybury education that we all shared”.
Thank you for your vision and commitment.
The Winged Heart Society honours those who have indicated that they have placed, or plan to leave, a gift in their will to Haileybury.
A bequest is a wonderful way to celebrate your past, while planning for the future. It provides an opportunity to leave a legacy in recognition of a lifelong connection to Haileybury and has enormous potential to transform outcomes for future generations.
A bequest may be made to the Foundation to support the School in general, or it may be applied to a particular purpose: towards a scholarship, or to help fund building work at a campus with which you or your family have been closely associated.
Members of the Winged Heart Society receive invitations to an annual event and other special events at the School and within the community of Haileybury Foundation donors.

Giving Day
The inaugural Haileybury Foundation Giving Day on Thursday, 11 August 2022 was a resounding success.
Our aim was to engage with more members of the Haileybury community and to be able to tell the story of the great work of the Haileybury Foundation to more and more within our community, and to provide fully funded scholarships to students who would otherwise not have been able to attend our School.
To have 209 donors contributing $181,561 on our first ever Giving Day was a wonderful result. The gift of an education is the best gift anyone can provide and we are delighted to advise that two students will now be the beneficiaries of Haileybury 130 Scholarships due to the success of the event.
Noriah will join the Berwick campus in Year 9 in 2023. Noriah’s interests include writing stories, reading fiction books, playing soccer and gardening. She also loves spending time with her family and friends as well as performing Korean dance, in particular KPOP.
Marley will commence at Brighton as a Year 7 student in 2023. Marley’s activities currently include AFL, basketball, weekly keyboard lessons, surfing and skateboarding. Her favourite author is Morris Gleitzman and she has a competitive passion for winning chess against her brother. In the past few months, she has taken up beach volleyball and recently auditioned for her school play, where she managed to score a lead role.
Giving Day key figures
Like Noriah, Marley is excited to be attending Haileybury and would not have dreamt of attending our School without the support of our Giving Day donors, whose every cent goes into supporting these scholarships.
In particular, our thanks are extended to our matching donors, whose vision to contribute prior to Giving Day allowed all donations on the day to be doubled. Our Giving Day matchers were:

> A new wellbeing centre that comprises the following: health centre, psychologists and individual needs. This has provided a central point for students and staff to attend for all wellbeing needs.
> With the new Pangea campus commencing, 12 spaces were created at Keysborough/Newlands to support the campus. These spaces are soundproof to assist staff dedicated to online learning.
> A new concrete path has been constructed around the Rendall oval from Pre-Senior to Senior School. This provides a great link from PreSenior to Senior School, as well as a safe, dedicated path for all staff and students.
> The Boys Middle School Toilets at Berwick were built in 1991 and were due for a refurbishment. The new layout gives a modern feel and has been well received by Berwick boys.
> Berwick is the new home for softball at Haileybury. The River Flat oval now contains permanent behind protection
fencing and interchange benches for home and away teams.
> The City Level 4 Terrace refurbishment includes replacement of the synthetic grass foam seating with modern wooden, maintenance-free and structurally stronger material.
> The Brighton Girls Middle School decking area has been expanded by removing some small garden beds to create more space. The vision was for a space that could be used for class briefings, a breakout area for eating lunch and socialising, or an impromptu stage for outdoor learning and creative pursuits.
Our students deserve wonderful facilities and through gifts to the Haileybury Foundation Building Fund, they are receiving them.

“During my 13 years at Haileybury met an incredible array of interesting, kind, caring, funny, charismatic Haileybury parents. Our immediate connection was our children but in time, our friendships developed and flourished. With my fourth child graduating this year, look forward to maintaining these friendships and building new connections with other past Haileybury parents via the Haileybury Society. What a perfect avenue for us parents to thrive just as our children do via the OHA.” Carole Dovaston (Former Haileybury parent)
