Impact Report
2023
From the Chairman
I commend to you the Haileybury Foundation Impact Report for 2023.
As in prior years, we publish this report to provide all members of the School community – including donors, recipients, Old Haileyburians, Haileybury Society members (being past parents and staff), current parents, staff and students – with an insight into the Foundation’s activities, fund-raising and impact over the past year.
As you will discover, it was another successful year, with many achievements to be proud of, not only because we have changed the course of more young people’s lives but also because the depth and breadth of the impact we are making has grown and matured.
While 2023 was my 10th year of chairing the Board, it was also to be the final year of service for Tom Poulton, our Foundation’s ‘Founding Father’ and inaugural Chairman, so please allow me to indulge as I articulate his impact on the School, the Foundation and, in a broader sense, the culture of giving in our community.
Of course, you will all know Tom Poulton as being Chair of Haileybury’s Council for the past 16 years (2008 to 2023) – a voluntary role in which he demonstrated outstanding stewardship, guided by a profound understanding of Haileybury’s vision and an unwavering dedication to its values.
With his guidance and support, Haileybury pursued excellence and he inspired us to be recognised as a Great World School, while his supportive presence was a constant in the life of the School and was always appreciated.
As Chair of Council, Tom was an inspirational force, bringing integrity, wisdom and a collegial spirit to Haileybury’s diverse stakeholders. Not only did he preserve the traditions and principles upon which the School was founded but he also infused it with a forward-thinking spirit, ensuring its relevance and success in an ever-evolving education landscape.
Having served with Tom throughout this period, I can personally attest to how he inspired both Council and the Executive to elevate their own contributions and set new standards of excellence. His willingness to share expertise, and to offer guidance and mentorship, assisted in Haileybury becoming recognised as one of Australia’s leading academic institutions.
It was very early in his tenure that Tom ‘founded’ the Haileybury Foundation. I can still recall the time when Council’s debate on establishing a foundation was veering along the well-worn path of a ‘great idea, but the timing isn’t quite right’ style of conclusion. He interjected with words to the effect of, “If we are to be recognised
as a Great World School, we need to have a Foundation, to enable those who wish to give back to do so – it is that simple” – to which, of course, there were no objections.
Tom put to work his legal mind with the draft constitution documents and, in 2010, having liaised with lawyers, Executive and Council, Haileybury Foundation was founded. With a Constitution and an inaugural Board, and with Tom as Chairman, our journey had begun.
While, as Chair of Council, he was involved with every other Haileybury board and committee, Tom contributed enthusiastically to the Foundation – both in time and personally – showing those who govern and manage Haileybury the benchmark for an exemplary journey of selfless service. He was particularly keen to ensure we built our reputation first and our corpus thereafter, while keeping our direct running costs to the bare minimum so that donors could give with the confidence that their funds were flowing to their chosen cause and not to administrative expenses.
Over the years of my Chairmanship, Tom has been supportive and enthusiastic in how the Foundation has grown. Thank you, Tom, for your dedication, support and service.
Neil Sutcliffe Chairman, Haileybury FoundationFrom the Vice Principal
Haileybury and the Haileybury Foundation work closely together to provide a broad range of opportunities for our students to grow and thrive at school and in the communities that they will live in and serve. From the significant contributions from our parent community to assist with the ongoing development of buildings and grounds, to the continued growth of our scholarship and bursary programs, our partnership builds the School’s physical and social environments to benefit both Haileybury and the broader community.
The Senior Executive and School Council work diligently to maintain downward pressure on school fees. Historically, our approach has been to reach out to our Haileybury community to give towards the growth and development of the School. The construction of our wonderful Aikman Hall at Keysborough was almost entirely funded by donations from the Haileybury community. Those funds were received during the early 1980s, showing extraordinary generosity and vision despite the turmoil the world’s economy and Australian society were facing at the time. Opened in 1983, Aikman Hall at
Haileybury remains one of the most loved and cherished places for generations of Haileybury families.
In 2024, the Haileybury Foundation continues to support Haileybury in its vision to be recognised as a great world school. Thank you to all those who gave generously to make these programs possible. As we look ahead, we are seeking to widen and enhance the Haileybury Foundation and the support that it provides the School. May I encourage you to become further involved in the work of the Foundation by reaching out to Russell Davidson, Director of Development and Alumni Relations at the Haileybury Foundation, or myself for a discussion.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Haileybury community for its unwavering support and commitment to our Scholarship and Building Program. Your generosity is transforming lives, shaping futures and building a stronger, more vibrant community for generations to come. Together, we are making a difference, one gift at a time.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Scott Doran Vice Principal Community Engagement & AdvancementFrom the Director of Development and Alumni Relations
The 2023 Haileybury Foundation Impact Report details the significant difference that is being made for our students via scholarships, buildings and libraries through the support of the Haileybury community.
2023 was a remarkable year for our School in many ways. The culture of giving to philanthropic means is a relatively new one at Haileybury, but one that has been cultivated over a short period of time and is now flourishing. Whether it is support of our building projects, scholarships, giving to our libraries or programs run at a campus or house level, it is clear to see that philanthropy is alive and well at Haileybury.
Just over 400 donors included a gift to Haileybury for the first time in 2023. This is a remarkable number and is on par with the average from the past six years, showcasing that donors see they are making a significant impact, regardless of the destination of their gift.
In 2023, the following new scholarships were advertised and granted through a competitive selection process undertaken and overseen by Haileybury Foundation staff and individual donors:
> Haileybury Foundation Scholarship (proudly supported by Aquastar Swim Schools)
> Haileybury Society Scholarship
> Douglas Travis Scholarship
> Stewart Bell Scholarship (proudly supported by Dr Tim Sturrock OH 1980).
In total, 32 students have commenced, or are continuing, their education with the benefit of a Haileybury Foundation scholarship. We are very proud that two of these students hold senior leadership positions at the school in 2024. 14 students have now completed their education at Haileybury thanks to a Haileybury Foundation scholarship. Two of those former students tell their stories of the impact of a scholarship in this report.
Your support of Haileybury Foundation provides us with a significant ‘value add’. No doubt, Haileybury would be a strong entity today with income provided through school fees; however, the opportunities provided to students through a commitment to philanthropy makes Haileybury the wonderful institution it is today.
Supporting the School’s Foundation is an investment in the future that guarantees returns beyond measure. By contributing to our scholarship, building and library funds, you’re not only enhancing the lives of students but also strengthening the foundation of our community. When speaking with donors, I remind them that providing a gift to Haileybury Foundation makes every student’s journey through the School richer. No one ever gets poorer by giving. Every donation, regardless of size, has the power to transform lives and shape destinies. It’s a ripple effect of generosity where the benefits reverberate far beyond the initial act of kindness. Together, let’s pave the way for brighter futures and endless opportunities.
Thank you.
Russell Davidson Director of Development and Alumni RelationsThe impact of my scholarship
Vinith commenced his schooling at Haileybury Berwick in Year 9 courtesy of the Douglas Travis Scholarship. Through this scholarship, Vinith’s trajectory in life has been shaped by the transformative power of philanthropy. His story is one of resilience, dedication, hard work and the profound impact of scholarship support. Overcoming the challenges of the COVID era, Vinith embarked on his educational journey at Haileybury with unwavering determination. Despite the uncertainties, Haileybury remained steadfast in its commitment to fostering academic excellence and prioritising student wellbeing.
“Over the course of my primary and secondary education, I attended three different schools; however, none quite like Haileybury. It wasn’t the ideal start for me at Haileybury with my first two years being riddled with COVID restrictions, lockdown and of course schooling via Zoom, but despite the ‘new’ challenges the school faced, Haileybury managed to find a way to maximise education as well as ensure that the mental health and wellbeing of students was prioritised.”
Throughout his time at Haileybury, Vinith immersed himself in myriad academic pursuits and extracurricular activities, seizing every opportunity for growth and development. From excelling in the classroom to demonstrating leadership on the sports field, his journey exemplifies the holistic approach to education that defines Haileybury.
“During my time at Haileybury I engaged in many extra-curricular activities, with my favourites being cricket from Years 9 to 12 as well as thirds soccer with a great group of boys in my final year. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the blazer squad for cricket
in Year 12 and had the opportunity to enhance my skills as well as conditioning my body with the highly professional coaches/trainers and physios we had access to.”
Central to this student’s story is the generosity of Dr Travis, a Haileybury Foundation benefactor whose unwavering belief in the power of education has continued to transform lives. Dr Travis, a well-known health professional, continues to support Haileybury Foundation students who otherwise would not have access to the education provided by Haileybury. Through his philanthropy, Dr Travis has opened doors and unlocked endless possibilities. The impact of his generosity extends far beyond the confines of the classroom, shaping futures and providing opportunities.
Vinith expresses his deepest gratitude for the incredible opportunity that Dr Travis’ scholarship provided for him. “His generosity and belief in my potential mean the world to me, and I am truly honoured to be a recipient of this support. I hope to achieve great heights in my further education at university.”
Vinith is studying a Psychology (Honours) course at Deakin in 2024 with the hopes and dreams of completing his Masters/Doctorate to be able to practise as a clinical psychologist. He also plans “to continue my cricketing career with the same level of passion and dedication I had playing for Haileybury.”
As we reflect on Vinith’s journey, we are reminded of the vital role played by philanthropy in shaping the future of our community. For those contemplating donating to the Haileybury Foundation Scholarship, I urge you to consider the profound impact of your support. Your generosity has the power to transform lives, ignite passions and empower dreams. Together, we can continue to uphold the legacy of excellence and opportunity that defines Haileybury.
Haileybury’s Workplace Giving Program
In a world where education is often seen as the great equaliser, financial barriers can still hinder deserving students from reaching their full potential. Recognising this disparity and the transformative power of education, Haileybury has embarked on an inspiring journey through its Workplace Giving Program. This initiative not only exemplifies our commitment to social responsibility but has also made a tangible impact on the lives of financially disadvantaged students.
For over 130 years Haileybury staff have been making a significant impression in the lives of our students. Haileybury’s academic results have once again been among the best in the nation. Small class sizes, diversity of curriculum offerings and parallel education have all played a large role. The dedication, care and brilliant teaching of Haileybury’s staff has been a huge contributor to these results.
Just over four years ago, Haileybury staff commenced having a major influence on the philanthropic front. The launch of the program was designed to allow staff to contribute to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. Such was the impact of this program
that within six months, Haileybury Foundation’s first ever Workplace Giving Scholarship had been launched. Fast forward three years and with just over 100 staff contributing to the program, a second scholarship was added.
When asked why he gave to the program, Senior School teacher Adam McCarthy referenced that “a Haileybury education and the future connections it provides can give students a huge advantage in life. The workplace giving program provides this opportunity to students who would not otherwise have the resources to access it. I am proud and grateful that I contribute to providing this wonderful opportunity to deserving students”. Local Marketing Manager Nicole Steyn expresses similar sentiments: “As a Haileybury staff member, I have the
privilege of seeing much of what our great school has to offer. For me, being a donor to the Workplace Giving Program is not just about giving, it’s about knowing that you are contributing to making a tangible difference in the lives of others by giving a student the opportunity to experience a life-changing education”.
The fortunate recipients of this program are Faith and Eshara. Faith has attended Haileybury’s City campus since Year 7, while Eshara commenced as a Year 10 student. Eshara is now a House Captain at Keysborough while Faith has enjoyed great success in the Sport and Social Justice fields.
Assistant Dean of Staff at Brighton, Mark Lockwood, says that “the initial information regarding Faith’s background story was enough to remind me that we generally breathe pretty rare air, and it is nice to offer someone else the opportunity to do so. Faith’s story and subsequent updates provided strong motivation”.
The program stands as a testament to the collective generosity and empathy of our staff members. It has become a life changer for students facing economic hardship. Through their ongoing support, these staff members have demonstrated a profound belief in the importance of education as a catalyst for change.
Jan Munro, a teacher from Brighton, explains that she donates to the program “as it is incredibly uplifting and rewarding. I am very proud of the work we do as teachers and know what a difference this program can make to the life of someone who would otherwise be unable to access this opportunity”.
As we celebrate the success of this initiative it is evident that the impact of this program transcends mere numbers. It is a testament to the power of collective action and the profound difference that can be made when individuals come together with a shared purpose. Through their generosity and compassion, the staff of Haileybury are not only changing lives but are also shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for generations to come.
Why I give
Neil McKinnon (OH 1984)
Neil McKinnon (OH 1984) is a donor to the Class of 1984 Scholarship, which is also proudly supported by a large number of his former classmates. Neil attended Haileybury for only one year but has a strong desire to give back. His story is as follows.
What inspired you to donate to our school scholarship fund?
Firstly as a thank you, and to contribute back – to allow others to have the experience and chance that I had. Opening the door for talented students, but without the family financial means to have the opportunity that Haileybury could offer, resonated with me.
Can you share a personal story or experience that influenced your decision to contribute?
My story dates back to 1983. I was a student at a government technical school. In those times, these schools only went to Year 11 / Form 5, and I was determined to
be going down the path towards HSC (now VCE) Year 12 ahead of attending university. My parents absolutely did not have the means to be able to send me to a school like Haileybury, though they really wanted to. I was fortunate enough to have received a scholarship to Haileybury for my HSC year. Changing school for that one year was always going to be tough, but I had such an awesome experience, and made some amazing lifelong friends. It was absolutely a ‘sliding doors’ moment for me. I’ll never know where the other paths could have ended up, but I have long been grateful for the opportunity and experience that I had.
What aspects of our scholarship program resonate with you the most?
The ‘Class of’ scholarships were what resonated with me to be able to contribute with others to facilitate a scholarship that I would not have been able to offer on my own. The fact that the program also meant contributions were tax-deductible made the financial element (and donation level) more practical.
How do you believe your donation will make a difference in the lives of the recipients?
Simply by offering the best opportunity for someone to reach their potential.
Are there specific qualities/ characteristics in a scholarship recipient that you prioritise or look for?
From my point of view, it is to foster a natural academic mind that may run the risk of never reaching its potential. Being able to provide a hand up for a talented student who otherwise could never have the family means or situation for such an opportunity.
What do you hope to achieve through your contribution to our scholarship fund?
Just knowing that I have been able to contribute back and offer someone the opportunity that they otherwise could not have had.
How would you encourage others to join you in supporting our scholarship fund?
I had, for a number of years, wanted to be able to ‘give back’ for others to have the same opportunity that I did. When the idea of a ‘Class of 1984 Scholarship’ was proposed, I immediately jumped on and encouraged it, as it was a practical way of a group getting together to provide the funds for the scholarship. I would love to see even more from the class of 1984 to contribute and expand, as well as other year groups. Please encourage your fellow cohort and add to the growing list of ‘Class of’ scholarships for your year as well. It is a great feeling to see the progress and the gratitude of the recipients, and to know you are a part of really making a difference.
Why I give
Melanie Wong (OH 2015)
Ever since 2016, Melanie Wong (OH 2015) has made a heartfelt contribution to the Haileybury Foundation every year on her birthday. Her remarkable journey at Haileybury commenced in 2013, when she was awarded an academic scholarship to Haileybury for Year 10 onwards. She sees herself as incredibly fortunate to have received a scholarship and is determined to reciprocate the generosity of the institution that opened up so many opportunities and changed the course of her life. Melanie is committed to paying it forward, aspiring to one day repay the entirety of the scholarship she received.
Having transitioned from another school, Melanie was initially hesitant to pick up Japanese when she joined Haileybury in 2013. However, at the encouragement of the course counsellor and knowing that Haileybury had a strong and passionate languages department, Melanie decided to take up the challenge. Despite initially feeling behind, the unwavering support from her Year 10 Japanese teacher during a holiday break helped her bridge the gap, sparking her continued passion for the language both at Haileybury and beyond.
Thanks to the widespread commitment and dedication of her teachers, Melanie received an outstanding ATAR and, consequently, a scholarship to Monash
University, which opened doors to myriad opportunities. Feeling overwhelmed with choices, she sought advice from her Year 12 English teacher, who advised her to pursue her passions. Encouraged to follow her heart, she completed a Bachelor of Arts and Secondary Education at Monash University over the course of 2016 to 2019. During that time, Melanie also pursued opportunities to broaden her horizons and explore her interests, such as completing an exchange program in Japan, and teaching placements overseas in the UAE. Remembering her roots, Melanie returned to Haileybury in the final year of her Secondary Education degree to complete her final placement round and was kindly given the opportunity to be mentored by her Year 11 Japanese teacher, who also happened to teach English.
Reflecting on her time at Haileybury, Melanie acknowledges the pivotal role played by the exceptional teachers who shaped her education and her career path. Their boundless compassion, commitment and expertise left an enduring mark. Melanie is now in her fifth year as a teacher at a government school and teaches the subjects that she developed a deep passion for at Haileybury: English, EAL, Japanese and Humanities. Drawing inspiration from her own background, she is committed to supporting students who may not have had the same privileges and opportunities she was granted. She is deeply thankful for having had the chance to attend Haileybury and learn from so many inspiring teachers.
Building Fund
Gifts to the Haileybury Foundation Building Fund are making a difference to the lives of our students and staff. We thank our donors who contribute regularly to the Building Fund and in particular our parents who donate to the Voluntary Building Fund. A summary of some of the projects that have been funded through these gifts appears below.
Berwick campus
As part of our continued commitment to our fixed assets, our Grade 4 classroom timber windows were replaced with aluminium commercial framed windows.
As part of this upgrade, a higher duty, thicker glass was applied to ensure we are sustainably improving our spaces.
Due to continual flooding and the physical appearance of the boys Middle School quadrangle, a new artificial surface was installed along with high-quality materials and further drainage to support excess water in peak rainy periods. These works included a complete demolition of the existing surface and a new base with compressed crushed rock. To further enhance the space, our Facilities team constructed decking around existing trees with mod wood.
Brighton campus
As the main driveway at Brighton is surrounded by ovals either side of the roadway, there has been a risk identified with students’ activities during peak times. To alleviate this risk, a new, heavy duty commercial flat top fence was installed on both sides of the main driveway. This will ensure that activities on these ovals are contained away from general traffic.
Keysborough campus
With our continued commitment to providing world-class sporting facilities, the existing orange oval cricket nets were replaced with a modern training templated artificial surface. The six training lanes will now assist coaches and students with bowling targets and a better overall space in both appearance and functionality.
With the popularity of the existing playground at Newlands, there was a need to provide further playground spaces within this area. A themed pirate ship layout was selected and installed at Newlands for students to enjoy for many years to come.
City campus
With the continued growth of Pangea, further dedicated teaching spaces were required. Additional high-quality, acoustically sound spaces were constructed to meet the needs of the required services, and to provide worldclass spaces for our teaching staff.

The Haileybury Society provides a wonderful opportunity through which past parents and longserving past staff can remain connected to Haileybury. Members of these groups have significantly contributed to the life of Haileybury and are keen to maintain a connection with the School and with each other.
The Haileybury Society is the vehicle for this continued connection and we are proud to relaunch this group in the 131st year of the School.
We are pleased to advise that the inaugural members of the Haileybury Society have been automatically elevated to the status of Patron of the Haileybury Society, acknowledging their long and enduring connection with our School.
Haileybury provides parents and staff with a social network. When our students leave, they
become life members of the Old Haileyburians Association, a vital part of the Haileybury community. Equally important to us is the relationship we build with our parents and staff.
As a member of the Haileybury Society you will be invited to:
> Society events
> Haileybury sporting fixtures
> OHA events (including business events, golf days, etc.)
> Haileybury musicals, plays, concerts, etc.
> VIP events on selected nights.
You will also be invited to participate in the exclusive OHA Rewards program as well as being in receipt of three newsletters per year.
