Welcome to Haileybury Rendall School where every student matters every day and where our vision is to be a great world school. Our School is closely affiliated with One Haileybury which also delivers highquality education programs across its five campuses in Melbourne, including Haileybury Pangea Online School and one in Tianjin, China.
We draw on the experience, expertise and success of these campuses to establish our own unique plan for the future.
Developing and maintaining a strong academic culture is a top priority. Our teaching framework includes the highly successful Explicit Teaching Model in the primary years and the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in the senior years, both of which help drive outstanding results as we deliver the Australian Curriculum. The strong ties between Haileybury in Melbourne
and Haileybury Rendall School also provide numerous opportunities for our community to take part in a broad and exciting range of activities. Our recent NAPLAN results and ATAR scores have been exceptional.
Our academic structure is enhanced by an unwavering commitment to helping our students develop the life skills that are essential for living and working successfully.
The wellbeing of our students is at the forefront of everything we do, and we want all our students to leave school excited and prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Our academic and pastoral programs help foster this attitude by building skills in resilience, creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.
We continue to build on our reputation as a leading Centre for Indigenous Educational Excellence. The recent growth in learning outcomes achieved by our Indigenous students in literacy and numeracy is outstanding and a direct result of the dedication and commitment of our students and teachers.
Boarding continues to flourish at the School. Our boarding facilities were recently upgraded, and the opening of an additional boarding house has allowed us to cater for a wide range of students, both international and domestic, further enhancing our reputation for providing a diverse cultural experience for all our students.
We look forward to you visiting our School and becoming part of our community.

The Haileybury Rendall School program provides an exciting and enriching curriculum for all students. It builds resilient and independent learners with skills in creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.
Our teaching approach is tailored to suit all year levels. We develop core literacy and numeracy skills through explicit instruction in the Junior years, while in the Middle years we move to a combination of explicit instruction and student-centred learning. As students enter their Senior years, they begin a three-year Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) program coupled with a range of subjects to suit all interests and abilities.
Ultimately, students leave Haileybury Rendall School prepared for the challenges that lie ahead, with a love of learning and with the life skills essential for future success.
Every learning stage is equally important at Haileybury Rendall School — from the early years in our award-winning ELC to the Senior years and our acclaimed VCE. Individual needs are met at all stages due to our student-centred approach to learning that recognises each student’s gender, age, interests and potential.
In the Junior School, our teachers use the research-proven explicit instruction approach to teaching Literacy and Numeracy, supplemented by a critical thinking and problem-solving approach.
Learning needs are paramount in the Middle School (Years 7–9), with an emphasis on developing a deeper understanding of issues and higher-level learning outcomes. Our Senior years program is designed to nurture resilient, independent learners.
Haileybury Rendall School is proud to include approximately 15% Indigenous students. To support Indigenous education, we work to develop cultural competence for all staff in a suitably safe environment.
In addition to the standard curriculum courses, we also provide dedicated Ochre classes for Indigenous students from Years 7–9. These classes focus on intensive numeracy and literacy and see students achieve exceptional learning growth in a small amount of time. We are proud to be regarded as a centre of excellence in Indigenous education.
Haileybury Rendall School offers a worldclass education and boarding experience to domestic and international students. Located in the breath-taking Northern Territory, Haileybury Rendall School Darwin, provides students from a diverse array of cultures and communities with a truly special Australian living and learning experience.

3 and 4 year olds
The Haileybury Rendall School Early Learning Centre is the start of an exciting and rewarding lifelong education journey. Young children are given new opportunities to explore further, discover more and grow together while developing their unique capabilities and a love for learning.
We provide a rich curriculum that encourages children to engage in learning, to be curious about life’s complexities and to have input in their learning journey as it unfolds.
We understand that the early years of learning are a time for exploration and the initial development of core skills. We draw on the Early Years Learning Framework to deliver a range of educationally inspiring Early Learning Centre (ELC) programs.
Our play-based curriculum combines appropriate tasks and teaching strategies to sustain each child’s engagement and develop their creativity, social skills, emotional wellbeing, higher-order thinking
skills and an overall sense of belonging. An immersive suite of play-based activities includes Language and Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Social Thinking, Inclusion and Diversity, Child Safety and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultural perspectives.
Your child will learn in an environment with care and wellbeing at its core and where their worth as an individual and community member is valued. The Early Learning Centre staff work hard to meet each child’s needs and interests and to foster and support their self-esteem and confidence.
At Haileybury Rendall School, children are challenged to achieve their personal best and are encouraged to participate and expand their horizons. Through individual and group planning, firm foundations are laid for future learning. Our ultimate aim is for our young learners to develop into young adults of vision, integrity and generosity of spirit.
Educators foster children’s independent inquiry using reflective planning, stimulating environments and play-based programs. They guide them to become capable, confident and competent learners.
Learning is extended through a curriculum that stimulates each child’s thinking and fosters their curiosity and a genuine love of learning. Through explicit teaching, we actively promote children’s learning using evidence-based planning and high-quality learning experiences that develop higherorder thinking skills necessary for 21st Century learners.
Parent participation is encouraged, and educators work in partnership with parents to optimise each child’s learning outcomes. We develop collaborative relationships based on mutual respect, shared understandings and continual dialogue.
We believe in evidence-based practice, professional learning and ongoing critical
reflection to inform and evaluate the highquality education that we provide.
Our ELC provides an airy indoor and outdoor environment. Natural play spaces invite young learners to explore and discover, building their curiosity, confidence and competence.
Children are encouraged to take part in independent and group play, and our experienced educators use early childhood learning strategies to provide support and guidance as children progress through their learning journey.
We ensure our Early Learning programs and activities are informed by critical reflection to guide best practice in all aspects of ELC education.
As a result, our ELC exceeds National Quality Standards as set by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority.
Educating with experience
Haileybury’s experienced and qualified educators develop strong relationships with families and their children.
Educators spend time getting to know each child’s interests and learning dispositions, and recognise the importance of working in partnership with families as their child’s first educator.
We aim for children and families to experience a genuine sense of belonging and we take pride in our welcoming, safe and inclusive ELC environments.
We know daily life is busy and so we offer opening hours that reflect this.
> 7.30 am – 6.00 pm Monday to Friday > 50 weeks of the year.
Families using this service can apply for the Child Care Subsidy.
Junior School builds on the formative work of our Early Learning program, further shaping positive attitudes to learning and helping students understand, master and apply core skills and concepts.
Our innovative Explicit Teaching Model is central to teaching and learning. It develops problem-solving and higherorder thinking skills and guides and encourages students to make decisions, become self-sufficient, answer questions and work independently.
Our Explicit Teaching Model provides the best possible start for all Junior School students, helping them engage with, and master, core literacy and numeracy skills.
This research-based approach is supported with instruction in thinking and problem-solving and allows our younger students to thrive in all subject areas.
The explicit instruction approach uses a research-based framework with components that include The Warm-up and I Do, We Do and You Do.
The goal is to move student learning from short-term memory and to embed long-term memory, so students are able to continually apply the knowledge they acquire. This also builds strong skills in literacy and numeracy — the foundation stones of all learning at Haileybury.
Skills are taught in-depth with the emphasis on application through problem-solving and higher order thinking. In a wider context, we guide students in developing positive and respectful relationships, setting high expectations, engaging within their classrooms and providing effective feedback.
Student development is managed through a combination of assessment, results analysis and goal setting that helps set a path of continual improvement and provide an intellectual challenge.
Developing through a varied curriculum
During their time at Junior School and through the Explicit Teaching Model, students build their knowledge and skills in Health, History, Geography and Science. Using an inquiry unit approach, they engage with, explore and learn about the world around them. Specialist lessons are provided in Art, Chinese, Computing and Digital Technology, Drama, Music and Physical Education.
In Years 5 and 6, the program becomes more discipline-based with more time allocated to specialist subjects. Science and Humanities are taught as separate subjects and students also study Visual Art, Computer Science, Drama and Music.
Learning Support programs are arranged for students with specific needs and the development of Educational Adjustment Plans is monitored by the Head of Inclusion and Support with assistance from specialist staff.
Learning Support programs may be short-term or ongoing, depending on the needs of the student, and they provide support or extension to students with all levels of ability.
Our Pastoral Care program permeates all areas of school life and provides strategies for our students to develop academically, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Haileybury Rendall School values each student: individual needs are a priority and personal backgrounds are considered in all aspects of the curriculum. A caring and supportive atmosphere helps foster each student’s potential.
In Junior School classes, the homeroom teacher is the key person and first point of contact for parents. Each teacher is supported by senior staff including the Head and Deputy Heads of Junior School, the Wellbeing Coordinators, School Counsellor, our Inclusion and Support team and other key personnel.
A variety of co-curricular activities are provided to develop the personal talents and skills of students. All students are members of a House and are involved in House competitions. The House system creates opportunities for vertical grouping, leadership and for participation in sporting, cultural and social service events within the School.
There are many opportunities for students to develop as performers in Junior School. Everyone is encouraged to participate in performances including assemblies, concerts and whole-ofSchool events.
Years 7-9
TThe Haileybury Rendall Middle School program caters for the changing needs of students in their formative years. It creates a smooth transition from primary to secondary school while students continue to develop their knowledge and skills through a varied and engaging curriculum.
Our Middle School program covers every crucial developmental stage within supportive classes that cater for the different social, emotional and educational needs of pre- adolescent and adolescent children.
The term ‘Middle Years’ describes a stage of schooling that bridges primary and secondary education. Through its structure, it responds more effectively to the specific needs of young adolescents, with a focus on developing a deeper understanding of issues and higher-level learning outcomes.
An exclusive, engaging curriculum
Throughout the Middle School years, students continue to develop their skills and knowledge in English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Languages and Health and Physical Education, while beginning to dive deeper into areas that drive greater interest.
Students also study electives such as Music, Visual Arts, Visual Communication, Media, Drama, Dance, Forensic Science, Politics, Computing, Woodwork and Food Technology.
As students progress through Middle School, their social, emotional and academic development is reviewed and reported on regularly using our continuous reporting platform
that provides reports at the end of each assessment task. Student learning behaviours are also reported on at regular intervals.
Put simply, Haileybury’s strong belief is that ‘every student matters every day’. To reinforce this, our approach is based around a personal development curriculum and health and wellbeing framework delivered by dedicated House tutors and Year Level Coordinators. Further support is provided by School Counsellors and the Inclusion and Support Team.
Our Middle School recognises that the academic, social and emotional needs of students may be significantly different from their peers. Students, parents and staff are involved in a collaborative process to develop differentiated programs that best support the learning needs of the child as a whole, in an inclusive class environment.
The Outdoor Education Program provides students with opportunities to develop essential life skills, such as resilience, leadership, courage and independence. These experiences become progressively more remote and challenging through the years. The Program seeks to create independent, capable and environmentally aware young adults who can work as a group to overcome physical and mental challenges in remote environments. This is a compulsory cocurricular program, and these experiences are integrated into school life through academic and wellbeing streams. They present opportunities for students to share cross-cultural experiences and to be challenged physically, psychologically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.
10-12
Senior School provides the ideal learning framework for students as they complete their learning and development in their final years of Secondary School. Aligned with Haileybury Melbourne we deliver the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) to all our senior students. This flexible academic program provides a strong pathway to tertiary studies as well as Applied Learning options for students looking for a more practical set of outcomes. The school already has an outstanding record of students achieving high ranking national ATAR scores.
Teaching and learning styles in the Senior Program are structured to promote selfmanagement and self-discipline, improve individual learning styles and encourage students to become resilient independent learners.
But it’s not all study as students balance academic classes with sporting and cocurricular activities and take opportunities to be part of clubs, performances, competitions and community initiatives.
The Senior School curriculum is rich and diverse and offers a breadth of VCE studies. We maintain a strong industry focus and offer interesting studies in Art, Music, Sport and Recreation, and Tourism.
Senior students combine their studies with co-curricular activities such as sports, the arts and community and cultural activities that enable them to explore and extend their interests. Students also have the opportunity to develop talents that complement their studies.
Students can begin their VCE studies in Year 10 and select a program according to their individual needs, talents and interests. Teachers and staff provide guidance and support to ensure the program matches their academic readiness.
There are two levels for each subject:
> Units 1 and 2 are at Year 11 level with Unit 1 studied in the first semester and Unit 2 in the second semester.
> Units 3 and 4 are at Year 12 level with Unit 3 studied in the first semester and Unit 4 in the second semester.
Year 10 students studying Units 1 and 2 of a subject and Year 11 students studying Units 3 and 4 are effectively studying that subject in advance.
To complete the VCE, students must satisfactorily complete at least 16 units (at least eight subjects), comprised of:
> at least three English Units, with two of these being Units 3 and 4
> at least three Units 3 and 4 subjects (in addition to English)
All Units 1 and 2 and Units 3 and 4 subjects must be satisfactorily (S) completed.
Some students at Haileybury Rendall School will have the opportunity to complete:
> one or two Units 1 and 2 subjects in Year 10
> one or two Units 3 and 4 subjects in Year 11, with the remainder being Units 1 and 2 subjects
> five Units 3 and 4 subjects in Year 12.
Put simply, ‘every student matters every day’ at Haileybury Rendall School.
In Senior School our students apply themselves in many areas to deepen learning and critical thinking skills to prepare for their VCE and beyond.
We want every student to challenge themselves and achieve their potential and retain a sense of school-life balance.
House tutors and Year level coordinators provide our first point of support for student wellbeing. We also have a personal development curriculum delivered by staff and focusing on topics such as confidence, resilience, social skills, respectful relationships and consent.

Local excursions to Darwin form the majority of boarding excursions, with a weekly shuttle commuting between the School and local shopping centres. Boarders can also take advantage of their location to enjoy healthy and active recreation and leisure time with access to School facilities including the swimming pool, the art room and activities workshop.

Haileybury Pangea Years 5-12
The Haileybury Pangea program
Students who study online through Haileybury Rendall School, become part of Haileybury Pangea. Haileybury Pangea offers students the opportunity to receive a world-class education online. We nurture students to be self-motivated, curious, innovative and academically driven, and we support students who want choice in how, when and where they learn.
Haileybury Pangea offers full-time academic courses aligned with the Australian Curriculum and delivered to students in Years 5–12, giving students every opportunity to excel in their chosen areas.
Our online campus is purpose-designed and structured to ensure each and every student can connect directly with their teachers and peers, join clubs, form friendships and feel supported in their academic studies.
> 2–3 live lessons per subject, each week
> Self-paced lesson time each week
> Individual attention with one-to-one and small group access to teachers
> VCE, Vocational Education and Training (VET) accreditations, microcredentials and pathways to world leading universities
> Student placement according to proficiency, not year level
> Online and in-person events.
Although academically rigorous first and foremost, every student can be confident that their learning program allows for wider activities. Haileybury Pangea enables students to have the best of both worlds — an outstanding online educational experience with like-minded learners, balanced with interests and commitments outside of the classroom.
Middle School subjects align with the Australian Curriculum and are delivered through an academic framework that develops skills in listening and understanding, reasoning and problemsolving, fluency and creativity.
Students develop their skills and knowledge in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Languages.
Language study is offered as part of the core academic program until the end of Year 9. Years 5 and 6 students study Chinese, while Years 7 and 8 can select from Chinese or French. Those in Year 8 who perform well academically and meet the Accelerated Languages criteria, may be invited to learn Latin or an additional language in an accelerated mode in addition to their core program.
Physical Education, The Arts and Computer Science are offered as self-paced learning units or as intensive activities.
The Senior School program is designed to ensure that each student has the
best possible preparation and opportunity to move into the tertiary pathway of their choice, or to any other appropriate pathway. We are guided by our School motto ‘every student matters every day’ (Dr Robert Pargetter) and intentionally create experiences to foster a lifelong love of learning. Spreading their VCE program over three years allows our Senior School students to manage their workload and balance their learning with other passions and interests. Senior students combine their studies with diverse extra-curricular activities, community and cultural activities which enrich their lives.
Haileybury Pangea is all about choice. Students follow our academic program but allow time for other pursuits.
Although our focus is the development of strong academic capabilities and applicable skills, we understand the importance of balance, and so our various clubs offer a range of exciting activities for students to explore new interests and develop their particular passions.
We provide a comprehensive program encompassing clubs and activities that foster this sense of choice, and thanks to our flexible learning approach, students will be able to find time that suits their individual requirements.
We also have an extensive Music program where there are opportunities for private tuition in many different instruments.
Each subject has 2–3 live lessons per subject, per week (depending on year level), giving students the time required to continue studies at their own pace. Live lessons are compulsory, and students have access to online course material, tools and other resources to help make the most of their online time.
All classes are delivered over Microsoft Teams conducted by a Haileybury Pangea teacher, supported by our Learning Management System to manage content and self-paced coursework.
Three core technology platforms support our learning community:
Our learning community is hosted on Teams so students have plenty of opportunities to interact and work safely and collaboratively during and in-between scheduled sessions.
Small class sizes ensure that students can form strong learning relationships across their classes, creating a supportive space to learn together.
Canvas Canvas is our central learning environment and is the home of high-quality learning experiences curated by our teachers. It contains self-paced content including interactive elements, videos and learning activities.
Student progress is recorded each week to support them in developing healthy learning habits.
OneNote is our digital student notebook that helps students stay organised and allows their teachers to monitor learning closely.
Unlike a traditional notebook, it can contain more than just written work, providing students with more opportunities to engage with the content with annotations, audio and video.
The uniform is the signature of Haileybury and represents a long and proud history. It is compulsory for all Haileybury Pangea full time students to wear a uniform which will consist of a polo shirt.
Students studying various other Haileybury Pangea offerings (intensive, electives) do not have to wear a uniform.
A parent or guardian is required to be at home during lesson time. Please see the Haileybury Pangea Business Notice available on our website for further clarification. Parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring adequate supervision of children while they are engaging in learning online.
Each subject has 2–3 live lessons per subject, per week (depending on year level), giving students the time required
to continue studies at their own pace. Live lessons are compulsory, and students have access to online course material, tools and other resources to help make the most of their online time.
Community is central to life at Haileybury Pangea. Haileybury Pangea is above all an integrated, passionate and united group of students, staff, parents, guardians and alumni, working together to ensure Haileybury Pangea remains a supportive and enriching environment in which to learn and socialise.
There are many programs and groups such as the Haileybury Pangea Parents and Friends, events and social opportunities that connect and support our families from enrolment to graduation and beyond.
The Haileybury Pangea learning community has been designed from the ground up by our brilliant teachers working alongside international researchers in blended learning, and focuses on three pillars of student interaction:
> with their teachers
> with engaging and challenging course content
> with each other.
This model ensures that every student develops self-regulation and selfefficiency in their studies while being supported by strong relationships with teachers and peers.
Darwin Haileybury Rendall School is named after the founder of Haileybury, Charles Rendall. The site of the School is rich in local history; originally a World War II Army hospital, post-war the property was converted to a Qantas transit centre.
In 1967, the Commonwealth Government acquired the property to create a postprimary hostel and boarding school for Indigenous children from isolated locations. Indigenous boarding has now been operational on the site for 50 years.
By early 1968, many of the buildings were renovated, repainted and converted into classrooms or bedrooms and the property became Kormilda College.
In 2018, Haileybury Rendall School opened in Darwin, adapting the best of Haileybury’s Academic, Social Justice and International programs to the education environment in the Northern Territory.
In its first four years, the School has more than tripled its enrolment and is seen as a Tier One school in the Northern Territory.
Set on more than 20 hectares, the campus features an auditorium, purpose-built vocational learning centres, fully equipped science and computer laboratories, a music recording studio, purpose-built playgrounds, a library and resource centre, an outdoor swimming pool and one of Darwin’s top-rated cricket pitches.
