PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Performing and Visual Arts Participation in the visual and performing arts is an important part of a well-rounded Haileybury education. 2010 has been an excellent year in this regard. The highlight of the performing arts year was the Haileybury Tattoo, run over six nights with its theme of The United Colours of Haileybury, reflecting the nature of the modern Haileybury. This edition of The Haileyburian offers an insight into many of the outstanding performances and some of the innovative work being completed by students at Haileybury. The Tattoo, at Haileybury, has a 44-year history, having been started by Headmaster, Michael Aikman, to support participation in the performing arts and showcase the Haileybury Pipes and Drums. It has grown into a major variety show held every second year. More than 4400 people viewed the six nights of the 2010 show and over 2300 students had time on stage. The show was a wonderful celebration of Haileybury’s multi-campus, multicultural structure, with each of the three Junior and Middle Schools having their own two nights and the Senior School component running across all six nights. Dance has become an increasingly significant part of the Tattoo and this year we saw the combined Hollywood/Hip Hop performance and the contemporary dance to Nights in White Satin.
“More than 4400 people viewed the six nights of the 2010 show and over 2300 students had time on stage.”
There has also been a range of other dramatic performances at Haileybury in 2010. Years 5 and 6 students have been involved in short plays and Middle School students doing drama have each had the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. The Year 10 play is always a highlight of the performing arts year. Students have the opportunity to explore the art of acting on stage with a limited set. This year’s production of Beached saw some fine performances and, importantly, significant personal growth for the participants. The Senior School play is an important component of the VCE Theatre Studies, Units 3 and 4 course. Students in this course assist in choosing the play, doing the set design and construction, and work closely with the director on the performance. Many are also involved as actors. The 2010 performance consisted of two one-act plays – The Musicians and The Exam. Both were well-cast and superbly executed with 60 students participating.
“…more than 400 students learnt a musical instrument through the School in 2010”
Haileybury’s music tradition stretches back to the ‘cricket and classics’ days of the Founder, Charles Rendall. In an account of a Haileybury music concert in 1904 it was noted that, “The performance opened as usual with the school song ‘Gaudeaumus Igitur’, followed by ‘There Went a Fiddler Marching’ an old Haileybury favourite, and given on the present occasion with all the vigour and esprit to which Haileybury audiences are accustomed”. Haileybury still greatly values musical participation and more than 400 students learnt a musical instrument through the School in 2010. Aside from the cultural and social benefits there has been a lot of study done on the benefits of music for concentration, memory, self expression and the ability to think. The music calendar has seen Middle School concerts at each campus, the Autumn and Winter Senior Concerts, the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon and a series of 13 lunchtime chamber concerts held in the Bradshaw Chapel. These events have given students significant opportunities to perform publicly and, for those completing VCE music, to be ready for their final examinations. A jazz highlight this year was the Jazz Concert at the Berwick Inn where a full house enjoyed an evening of entertainment from 60 musicians across a range of ensembles.
The visual arts are growing in strength at Haileybury with 60 students completing a VCE Units 3 and 4 or IB final year subject in these areas in 2010. The subjects offered are Art (VCE and IB), Studio Art, Visual Communication, Media, Film (IB), Digital Multimedia, Design Technology Fabrics and Design Technology Wood. The process of creating ideas, realising work and responding to feedback is an important aspect of developing lifelong learning skills. The Spring Exhibition of work in the Sholto Black Vicinage (Ian Bow Art Gallery) showcased a strong body of work produced by students in the Senior School. Haileybury has a strong commitment to the performing arts and the visual arts. The top performers in Victoria each year in the VCE are selected to go into Top Acts (Drama, Theatre Studies, Music), Top Class (Dance), Top Screen (Media) and Top Designs (Design Technology, Media, Visual Communications, VET Digital Mutlimedia). In recent years, Haileybury has had students selected in each of the categories above, foregrounding the depth of talent and strength of teaching in these areas.
“Haileybury has a strong commitment to the performing arts and the visual arts. “
The National Curriculum is being developed by the Federal Government for implementation in 2013. The five strands of the Arts Curriculum are Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts. According to the National Curriculum documents: “Arts make distinct and unique contributions to each young person’s ability to perceive, imagine, create, think, feel, symbolise, communicate, understand and become confident and creative individuals.” Haileybury supports this fundamental rationale for the teaching of the Arts. NAPLAN RESULTS Haileybury strongly supports the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests, as they ensure a focus on core literacy and numeracy skills in the curriculum. All Haileybury parents with daughters or sons in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 receive individual NAPLAN results. Haileybury receives the collective data for the School and we are delighted with the overall performance. In 2009, Haileybury’s results saw the School ‘above’ or ‘substantially above’ in all categories in relation to ‘similar schools’ and the ‘all-schools’ data. The 2010 results, which will be published on the My School website early next year, show another outstanding set of results. NAPLAN scores are on a single scale that covers the full range of student achievement over all years of schooling. Thus, an individual score shows a particular level of development and achievement and is not particularly related to the year of schooling. Of course, older students are expected to obtain higher scores. The consistency in the calculation of NAPLAN scores and their presentation at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, gives valuable information to a school about trends across time. NAPLAN testing has now been in place for three years, giving us the opportunity to compare a particular cohort of students as it moves through the School. Our analysis of this data indicates that the ‘value-added’ measure for Haileybury students is very high. At this stage the ‘value-added’ component is not publicly available and the government has not yet decided how to use the additional data that NAPLAN now provides. It is to be hoped that it will be published as, used properly, it can have a positive influence on school improvement and school system improvement. I congratulate all staff and students on the outstanding performance achieved in the NAPLAN testing. We look forward to the publication of the data on My School early next year. DEREK SCOTT PRINCIPAL
MAO’S LAST DANCER Haileybury staff were lucky enough to hear the remarkable Li Cunxin talk as part of their Professional Development Program. Former ballerina, Li Cunxin, best known for his memoir Mao’s Last Dancer, spoke to the staff about his childhood under Chairman Mao’s rule, his love of dance and his struggles as a young adult defecting from China to America. His presentation was truly inspirational and well received by all staff.

INTERNATIONALISM AT HAILEYBURY Haileybury has signed a sister-school agreement with Brigadier Udaya Arayatne, Principal of Trinity College, Kandy, Sri Lanka. Trinity is a large boys school established in the 1860s and is well known for its academic and sporting prowess. It is situated in the hill town of Kandy in central Sri Lanka, a town renowned for its culture and the beauty of its setting. The sister-school relationship will allow students from Haileybury to spend time in Sri Lanka, experiencing a very different culture from that here. Haileybury sees this link as an important element in its mission to educate its students as global citizens. In addition, Haileybury and the SMA Negeri Sumatera Selatan (a Sampoerna Academy in Indonesia) have established a sister-school relationship that will allow the regular exchange of students. From next year, small groups of Year 10 students will be able to spend a period at the Academy with a Haileybury teacher, involving themselves in the School’s community assistance projects around Palumbang. Information about the Sampoerna Foundation and its academies is available from www.sampoernafoundation.org/en/. More information about these opportunities will be circulated shortly. CAPTAINS’ CORNER CAPTAIN OF HAILEYBURY COLLEGE
Now that I am officially an Old Haileyburian, I can understand why all the other “old folks” in our lives like to talk to us about what happened in “their day”. While I am still quite young to be thought of as old, I am proud that I will be considered an Old Boy of the School for many, many years. So it is with a great deal of nostalgia that I look back on my last semester at Haileybury.
CAPTAIN OF HAILEYBURY GIRLS COLLEGE
As the curtains close on an education filled with some of the most wonderful memories, we become increasingly grateful for the world that is Haileybury. For its students, there is no doubt that this School became more than just a place of education and of classrooms: it became a home; it became a place of happiness and of laughter; better still, it became our lives.
It was as busy as ever. The winter and spring sports seasons were competed in valiantly at all levels of the School. The Units 3/4 students studied hard for their end-of-year exams, performances and oral exams led by the hard-work and many extra hours put in by the teaching staff to really get us prepared. The teachers at Haileybury have set great examples for us throughout our lives as Haileyburians and I would like to thank each and every one of them for that. The Tattoo was a highlight of Semester 2. It saw a great breadth of participation from all areas of the School. The music, art, dance and drama departments from each campus and Senior School unified brilliantly to produce a fantastic show entitled The United Colours of Haileybury. The Tattoo showcased talents from our prep kids all the way to our senior students. You certainly missed out if you didn’t get the chance to see it, so make sure you see the next one in two years time. I know I’ll be there. The prefect-initiated Oaktree Week was another highlight of the Semester. This was a week-long fund and awareness raising campaign consisting of a different event each day. We were lucky enough to have Tom O’Conner, the CEO of the Oaktree Foundation, speak at a Senior School assembly and Bernadette Cho, the Victorian Director of Oaktree, speak at the Oaktree dinner about
So, we reflect back upon the success that was the 2010 Academic Year as evidence of the impact that Haileybury continues to have on its students: Success in the arts and sports, but above all, our own personal development. It was the year of the beloved Tattoo at Haileybury, and as has come to be expected, the six-night show provided endless entertainment for captivated audiences. Once again, the outstanding talent that we are blessed with was on show, and it proved to be both an enjoyable and a rewarding experience for the students involved. The musical, dramatic and visual art elements were given the perfect conclusion each night as the Haileybury dancers provided one of the greatest performances ever to grace the Aikman stage: the contemporary Nights in White Satin piece. Similarly, the Haileybury Hearts took to the sporting fields with impressive commitment and enthusiasm, and – among the many laughs and mistimed shots on goal – we established an unrivalled record. The Soccer and Water Polo teams claimed their third and forth Premierships respectively, continuing the dominance they have held over the APS since their induction into the competition. Even more impressive, however, was the world-class talent of Haileybury’s runners. Our CrossCountry team traversed to Slovakia for the World Cross-Country Championships, finishing in a remarkable second position.
the importance of thinking of ourselves as living in a global community. The week saw us reach our school-wide goal of raising $10,000 for our partner school, the Siqongwani High School, in South Africa. This is a significant amount of money which will go a long way to help educate the students and create peer-leaders in our partner school. One of Tom’s messages will remain with me always: “If you saw a child drowning in a puddle in front of you, but you would need to ruin your $200 pair of shoes to save him or her, of course you would do it without even thinking. Then why do we not do the same for a child on the other side of the world. Not being able to see that child does not lessen his or her suffering.” As all of us new Old Haileyburians eagerly await our ATAR scores, I would like to wish you all the best of luck for the future. I would also like to implore you all to keep in contact. We can keep our Year 12 community alive if we choose to. It doesn’t end at the end of school. We are Haileybury. BRENDAN CLARNETTE
Yet, beyond the talent and the hard work of the Girls School lingers a growing consciousness of our role and our place in the broader society. As a school community, Haileybury has continued to embrace the concept of social justice and appreciate its importance. This year we initiated a week of intense fundraising activities and awareness campaigns for our whole school charity, the Oaktree Foundation. In the aptly titled Oaktree Week, each day saw a different activity attract the students’ interest and inspire a response – guiding us toward our ultimate goal of $10,000 in raised funds. It is this commitment to, and this emphasis on, social justice that fosters the worldly, caring and selfless individuals that Haileybury is so renowned for. Beneath the day-to-day life and the hub of activity that defines Haileybury, lies within its students a deep appreciation for our School. I must extend the greatest of thanks to the exceptional staff who continue to make this place so special for us all. It is through their consistent care that Haileybury earns the deepest love and respect from its students. What a privilege we all share. Vivat Haileyburia. MIETTA McDONALD

ARTS EXTRAVAGANZA DANCE – NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2010 was a big year in dance, which saw Haileybury’s first ever Dance Team take out the National Championships. The ten girls from Years and 10 to 12 did not have the easiest road to Nationals but it was with such hard work and dedication that they rose through the ranks and produced such an amazing result. Led by Mrs Lauren Prefect and Ms Sam Drury, the dance was based on the classic 80’s movie Bettlejuice. The dance was quite abstract and contemporary in style and the students were required to dramatise the character through their faces and whole body to communicate the theme. Another highlight for the year was Nights in White Satin, choreographed by Ms Sam Drury and performed by the Senior School dancers at the 2010 Tattoo. The dance was truly breathtaking and certainly a high point of the show.

DRAMA & THEATRE STUDIES The bar had been set very high for this year’s crop of performers who have been honing their skills in many co-curricular productions beginning with the Year 10 Play. This has quickly become a much anticipated production, performed with a minimum of stagecraft, with the focus being very much on the young actors creating the world of the play. The School Play followed and saw two shows being performed on the one night in two venues. The Theatre Studies class, who were the creative team behind the production, wanted to push the boundaries. The Exam and The Musicians were two very different comedies that involved more than fifty students, many of them music students who had not performed in a play before. The Tattoo followed very quickly with comedic performances linking many of the items, allowing our comedians to shine. The year is closing with the focus swinging back to VCE presentations. The quality of individual performances has been very pleasing and we wait, with keen anticipation, the outcomes of all the performers’ efforts in front of the examiners.

MUSIC The Tattoo was the prime focus for the Music Department in 2010. The band was made up of over 30 student musicians who played more than 60 very different pieces of music over three different programs. This is a standard of performance that a professional group of musicians would find demanding but our students delivered every time. Other highlights included the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon, showcasing the School’s finest classical performers in the David Bradshaw Chapel. A first was the Haileybury Jazz Night at the Berwick Inn, where our jazz musicians were given a valuable opportunity to perform in an informal setting. Musicians were also out and about performing at ministerial functions and retirement villages
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY – FABRICS In Design and Technology Fabrics, students assume the role of a designer/maker and develop knowledge and skills to produce creative responses to a need or want from a client. 2010 proved to be another successful year for the Fabrics students. The Units 3/4 students produced excellent folios and constructed some very creative garments. Formal frocks, recycled fabrics, summer dresses, an art backpack, bedroom attire and fashion forward creations were some of the items produced, while the Units 1/2 students added their own twist to a basic skirt design. The year culminated with a well received fashion show at a Girls School assembly. Several students are planning to continue in the field and are applying for a variety of Tertiary courses in 2011/12. Some fields available to Design Technology students are industrial, product and interior design, as well as fashion, furniture, jewellery, textile and engineering. We wish them the very best for the future.

MUSICAL SPECTACULAR
TATTOO
Haileybury brought down the curtains on the largest production in the School’s history – the 2010 Tattoo. More than 2300 boys and girls from across all of Haileybury’s campuses took to the Aikman Hall stage to perform over six evenings. Over 4000 people came to see the spectacular production. The Haileybury Tattoo, held every two years, is an event showcasing a wide range of musical and drama performances involving students from Year 1 to Year 12. The theme for this year’s Tattoo was The United Colours of Haileybury, which added vibrant colour to the Aikman Hall stage.

Art Exhibitions VCE UNIT 3/4 Students working in Art, Studio Art, Design Technology Wood and Design Technology Fabrics, Media, Interactive Digital Media, Hospitality and Visual Communication from all campuses displayed their Unit 3/4 folio work in the 2010 end-of-year Art Exhibition. The exhibition was held on Tuesday, 12 October in the Sholto Black Arts Building, Altera Terra, Ian Bowe Art Factory and the Ralph W Hill Memorial Art Gallery at Keysborough. The work will stay on display in the Gallery until the end of the year. The exhibition was opened by the 2010 Art Captains, Jessica-Anne Lyons and Joshua Stevens, who thanked all of the Art, Tech and Media staff for their hard work and dedication over the year. Special guest and former Art Captain, Lindsey Fisk (OH 2007), also spoke at the opening. He told students of the journey through his tertiary studies and how directions and vocations may change as new doors are opened and concepts develop. Around 100 Haileybury students had their work on display and the exhibition was well attended despite the inclement weather on opening night. Hospitality students made canapĂŠs and served guests throughout the evening as they moved between all the display areas. Many Haileybury students have entered their work into the VCE seasons of excellence. These include Top Arts, Top Screens and Top Designs. We wish them well in the process of having their work selected for these prestigious exhibitions.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) ART EXHIBITION The second year IB Art Exhibition and Examination was held on Friday, 8 October in the Ralph W Hill Memorial Art Gallery where the work of Shelby Morwood and James Hunsaker was on display. Both students curated the show as part of their assessment. Earlier in the day the students were examined by an external examiner and were required to discuss their work looking at personal, cultural and historical context. The exhibition showcased two years of work and displayed a variety of traditional and non-traditional art mediums and materials. We are looking forward to seeing their work exhibited in the Victorian International Baccalaureate Show in March 2011.

YEAR 10 CAREER DEVELOPMENT WORK EXPERIENCE 2010 An integral part of the Year 10 Career Development program is Work Experience. This involves students deciding on a job in which they have an interest, securing an employer and then spending one week in the workplace observing the job. In preparation for Work Experience, Pre-Senior students complete The Be Real Game which involves role playing a person with a set job profile, preparing a resume for this fictitious person and making life style decisions based on income and other factors. Early in Year 10 students also complete an online interest inventory called Career Voyage, which generates a list of 20 jobs associated with their interests, and before they enter the workplace students must complete an occupational health and safety exercise. Work Experience students value the opportunity to collect first-hand information from the workplace as it assists them make more informed career planning decisions and become more aware of what the workplace has to offer. During Year 11 and Year 12, students have the opportunity to complete additional career inventories and each student has a scheduled individual interview with a qualified career counsellor to assist in the development and review of a career plan. Parents are welcome to attend these interviews. Additional interviews may be organised by students and parents throughout the year. ALISON FANKHAUSER DIRECTOR COURSES & CAREERS

One of the very popular sports for girls and boys at the School for the past nine years has been aerobics. Haileybury confirmed its status as the leading aerobics school in the country with a remarkable performance at the National Championships in Brisbane in August. Over 60 Haileybury students from Years 5 to 12, and several teams of past students, qualified for the Nationals with great performances in the State Championships in July. Haileybury won four gold medals, seven silver medals and one bronze. A highlight this year was the gold medal won by the girls Secondary Theatrical Dance team. This was Haileybury’s first dance gold medal at the National Championships.

AT THE NATIONAL INTERSCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SYDNEY
The team competes all year round and each rider puts in a significant amount of preparation to be able to compete in each event. We have been proud of the many significant achievements of our team members this year, and for the first time Haileybury had two riders, Angus Wright-Smith and Jessie Hurley, as members of the Victorian Team at the National Interschool Championships held in Sydney in September. This year is also the first year that members of the Haileybury Equestrian Team have volunteered at the Rideability Victoria Centre in Officer (previously Riding for the Disabled). This activity took place every Saturday morning during the winter sport season and gained a great response from the team as well as the very thankful staff and children at the centre. Haileybury Equestrian took on another new project of hosting an interschool competition – the winter day of the Interschool Showjumping Series, held on 6 August. There was a great deal of preparation involved in hosting this event and it was fantastic to see so many of the team and parents and supporters volunteer to help out in some way; so much so that despite the very trying wet and cold conditions the day was very successful and saw over 130 riders from more than 50 schools complete three rounds of showjumping each. We have held regular Training Days which have been well attended and have assisted the team to gain new skills and strengthen their talents. Under the guidance of our 2010 Captain, Jessica Kealy, these, as well as other exciting events such as social gatherings and team dinners, have enabled the team to get to know each other better and to spend valuable non-competitive time together. All of the riders are very lucky to have the Friends of Haileybury Equestrian parent support group working alongside them. This group has been working constantly with us to promote our sport and assist all Haileybury riders. There is always a lot happening with the Haileybury Equestrian Team! GIRLS WATER POLO Haileybury’s Girls Water Polo Team recently celebrated their fourth consecutive Premiership.
THE GIRLS WATER POLO TEAM WITH MRS KAREN CANTWELL AND MR JEFF BARROW
In the time that we have had girls in Senior School at Haileybury, we have remained undefeated in every single game we have played. The depth of this year’s teams has been one of our great assets with many younger team members stepping up to the mark and playing in the Firsts. This also means the future of Water Polo at Haileybury is looking bright. Under the guidance of the specialist coach, Mr Jeff Barrow, our skill development, team plays and fitness have allowed us to dominate the APS competition over the past four years. ALYSSA BROADHEAD CAPTAIN OF WATER POLO (GIRLS)
ATHLETICS Haileybury students performed very well in the APS Athletics competitions with the girls coming third (of six) and the boys seventh (of eleven). The girls team effort in the morning was outstanding. Holly Mather captained the girls team and she competed in five openage events. She finished 2nd in Long Jump, 2nd in the 100m Hurdles, was a member of the winning 4x100m relay team, was in the 4x400m team that finished 3rd and she did Shot Putt finishing 6th. Holly had the most events of any girl on the day. Similarly, Jordan Williamsz was outstanding as Boys Captain. Jordan won the Open 800m in 1:50.10s to break a 25-year old APS record (1:52.02 in 1985). He also won the 1500m. Year 10 student, Luke Cann, also performed exceptionally well on the day, breaking the APS U17 Shot Putt record with a massive throw of 15.51m. Athletics is the final major sporting event on the APS calendar for 2010.

resolutions is debated for an hour, and then an impromptu resolution is produced for the third hour. Nikos Kordos and David Hardman also performed well in making the Grand Final of the Thant Trophy.
World Champion Kenji Fujihara won the FISAF World Junior Male Aerobic Champion in the Netherlands recently.
Mahasen and Nikhil will now represent Victoria at the Evatt Trophy competition, the National Schools Model United Nations Security Council Competition.
Vale Kevin Ladd It is with great sadness that Mr Kevin Ladd passed away on 4 October 2010 after an extended period of illness. Kevin was a teacher at Newlands for over 20 years (1982-2002). He originally commenced teaching as a Year 5 teacher and was then appointed as the Primary Curriculum Coordinator by Mr Bruce Lines. In the late 1990s, he was appointed as Deputy Headmaster of Newlands. His three sons also attended Haileybury. Kevin was greatly admired for his work ethic and management of staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marg and the family.

United Nations: Thant Trophy Haileybury students, Mahasen Sooriyabandara and Nikhil Gullapalli, have won the Victorian Thant Trophy for 2010. The Thant Trophy is an inter-school competition in which students enact a mock United Nations assembly. They are assigned countries ahead of time and resolutions to prepare for debate. Each resolution is centred on a particular question and contains a number of clauses that propose ways of resolving the main issue. On the day of the competition, each of the two prepared
Students, parents and teachers from the Berwick campus have donated money, paper, pens, pencils, books, clothes, a power generator and water pumps to the Charlotte Ilunga School in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The small school, which accommodates approximately 60 students from the ages of eight to 16 as well as four staff and a gardener, greatly benefits from Haileybury’s contributions. Haileybury teacher, Mr Bournik Kabengele, is the President of the Charlotte Ilunga Foundation which oversees the project. Bournik is responsible for organising fundraising activities as well as the delivery of the donated goods. For more information about the project visit http://charlotteilungafoundation.org/
Following on from his 4th placing in 2009, a huge amount of training has gone into his preparation for this year’s event. Kenji has now achieved the Cadet Male title in 2008 in Russia, a 4th placing in the Junior Male Singles title in the French Caribbean (2009) and the World Junior Male Singles title in Holland (2010).
Top Class (Theatre Studies & Drama) In addition to those listed in The Haileyburian (Winter 2010 edition), the following students were selected to perform in the VCE Season of Excellence 2010. Top Class (Drama) – Zac Cracknell. Top Class (Theatre Studies) – Jack Traylen, Lewis Bell and Sarwar Haji.
Social Justice Haileybury contributed over $11,000 to the Oaktree Foundation this year and while we are very proud of our commitment to this outstanding initiative we also have many other good programs to which we contribute. Of particular note is Bradshaw House’s commitment to Montclair House and more recently, Aikman House’s connection with the Child and Adolescent Ward at Frankston Hospital and Sholto Black House’s connection with the Royal Children’s Hospital. Haileybury has a fine tradition of contributing to the community beyond our gates.

HERITAGE & ARCHIVES CLUB 2010 The Heritage & Archives Club has orchestrated a number of activities throughout the year. A particularly strong student leadership group, led by Teacher-In-Charge, Dr Glenroy Garden, and ably captained by Izak Rosenfeld and Krystal Mizzi, saw weekly meetings well attended.
HERITAGE & ARCHIVES CLUB CAPTAINS, KRYSTAL MIZZI AND IZAK ROSENFELD
Again a number of dedicated former Haileyburians, led by Archivist, Keith White, spent many hours categorising historical material. Annual magazines dating back to 1903 have been scanned to create a searchable data base, which will greatly facilitate future research. Early in the year, club members provided a tour of the Archives Gallery for Founders’ Day attendees, including the ABC newsreader, Ian Henderson. Student docents provided further tours as the year progressed, and these personalised introductions were particularly enjoyed by visitors from international schools. Several years of planning came to fruition in February when a group including Year 12 student cricketer, Jackson Coleman, travelled to Sydney to dedicate a plaque to Old Haileyburian Test cricketer, Gerry Hazlitt, at his gravesite in the grounds of St Thomas Anglican Church in Enfield. This co-operative venture also involved King’s School and Cricket Australia. The Ian Bow triptych, formerly displayed in Castlefield’s Dickinson Hall, was restored and now hangs impressively in the Bradshaw Chapel. In addition a ceremony was held to celebrate the hanging of an early Bow sculpture in the Art Factory. The students initiated striking improvements to the signage at the entrance to the Sholto Black Vicinage. A Heritage Trail is in the planning stages, and small teams of students were assigned specific sites to research as the first step in outlining an appropriate structure and development of the project. Over the past year the OHA has: • Established a new strategic plan for the next 5 years • Agreed on a new financial structure with the School • Renewed the Council and advisor structure • Initiated a brand project to give the Association a fresh image • Launched the Brian ‘Weary’ Clark Club for our 50+ year alumni • Conducted a range of successful events and reunions connecting Old Haileyburians and other members of the Haileybury community • Continued to grow our database • Initiated work on a mentoring program • Conducted a research project to better understand our members’ needs Research has a key role to play in our growth. Haileybury is a diverse church, if you consider that pre-1968, all Haileyburians graduated from Brighton and that from 1969 to 1999 the School was a fairly conservative boys-only institution, with the Senior School at Keysborough. Now, as an innovator that educates boys and girls across three campuses, it is evident those different generations of Old Haileyburians have had many different experiences. Add the different needs from the OHA that each one of us has and it becomes a complex job for the Association to properly understand the broad needs of the membership and how to target services and events at different groups. Hence, the research project currently being carried out by DBM is an extremely important part of the OHA’s future development. I encourage you to assist us by making yourself available to either complete an interview or a questionnaire as part of the process. Please contact Russell in the office to volunteer. I look forward to reporting on the outcomes at www.oha.org.au, on our Facebook page, in our e-newsletter and in the next edition of The Haileyburian. We have seen some change on the Council over the past 12 months, as well as the establishment of a group of advisors to assist our Vice Presidents develop strategy. I want to thank all who have given their time and want to make mention of Dennis Smith, former Executive Director of the Association, who has recently retired from Council. We thank Dennis for his ongoing support of the Association. He has generously offered to remain as an advisor to our marketing team. I also want to thank Matt Baxter for his contribution to the Council. While he remains on Council, Matt retired as our Vice President of Clubs at the recent AGM and his contribution both in this role as well as the role of President of the Cricket Club is greatly appreciated. I congratulate Jarrod McLauchlan on his appointment as VP Clubs. I am also delighted to welcome Nick Cummins (OH ‘91), Rob Aivataglou (OH ‘86), Ben Sze (OH 2001) and Mandy Fraser-Jones (staff) to Council and thank them for their commitment to the organisation. I want to express my personal thanks, as well as that of all members for the work of our Executive Director, Russell Davidson, and his Executive Assistant, Gaby Dowling, for their dedicated work over the past year. There is no time for rest as we look to turn our plans into actions over the coming year, I encourage you to stay in contact and get involved and hope to see you at an event during 2011. On behalf of the OHA, I wish all a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe 2011. LUKE BOULD OHA PRESIDENT

VALE GWEN SINCLAIR
DR GEOFFREY PATIENCE (OH ’60)
The OHA is sorry to advise of the death of Gwen Sinclair. Gwen was the widow of a former Haileybury Life Governor, Dr Jim Sinclair, who passed away in November, 2008. Two of their sons served as School Captains of Haileybury, Donald in 1964 and Rod in 1968.
The OHA is saddened by the recent passing of Dr. Geoffrey Patience (OH ‘60) who died with his family by his side on November 5, 2010, aged 67 years.
JEFFREY WESTLAKE (OH ’56) The OHA is saddened by the recent passing of Jeffrey Westlake from cancer. Jeffrey was a renowned athlete and gymnast at Haileybury. Our condolences are passed on to his family members. NORMA HODGE The OHA is saddened at the passing of Norma Hodge, mother of David, School Captain in 1977, and Michael. Norma is a former President of the Haileybury Mothers’ Association, 1980, and widow of Cleve, a member of school council 1978-1987. Both were members of The Haileybury Society. MARK TAYLOR (OH ’76) The OHA is saddened to learn of the passing of Mark Taylor on 5 November 2010 (suddenly) at the Alfred Hospital. Mark was an exceptional hockey player for the School and the OHA, and was also a keen sailor for many years with his late father, Peter, sailing with the Sandringham Yacht Club. He worked for a number of companies before becoming self-employed, and recently dedicated his time to helping raise his two children, Matthew and Stephanie. He is survived by his children, mother, Robin and sisters, Jennifer and Gillian, and will be greatly missed by all friends and extended family.
Over 400 people attended the funeral of a wonderful Old Haileyburian on 11 November at The Boulevard Restaurant in Kew. Geoffrey Patience attended Ormond College and studied medicine after he left Haileybury. He had an interest in surgery which led to him performing several minor operations in his time as a GP. After a few years in Melbourne, Geoffrey set up a shared general practice in Benalla in 1970 where he stayed until 1998. He developed a lovely ambience with the Benalla people who loved his gentle and humorous manner. People would often comment that Geoff was always waving as he drove through the Benalla township..obviously to those that he had assisted in his 28 years there. Geoffrey bought a house in North Fitzroy when he returned to Melbourne and from there joined a shared practice in Kew. Again he developed some tremendous friendships and regularly attended to many specialist consultants in the area. He stayed on there until his illness forced him into retirement. Geoffrey will be known as a gentleman who had a great many friends, had a terrific sense of humour and one who was exceptionally skilled in his profession. He is survived by his wife of many years Pam and 2 sons and a daughter. Geoffrey’s brother Professor Allan Patience is an Old Haileyburian (1964).
In late 2010, the OHA was delighted to welcome some fresh faces to the Council. Here is a profile of two of our new Councillors:
BEN SZE I currently work at JBWere on their Markets Desk. I work on a team that advises and executes for both institutional and private clients in foreign exchange, fixed income, overthe-counter derivatives and structured trades. During my time at Haileybury I was the School Captain, Athletics Captain and a member of the Senior Athletics team since Year 8. Since leaving school I was able to keep in touch with many Old Haileyburians and one of the topics that kept coming up was how great it would be for the OHA to become a central point for business and career enquiries. Given the renewed focus of the OHA, I am excited to be a member of the Council to assist in moulding the future direction of the OHA.

I completed Year 12 at Haileybury in 1986 having started in Year 4 in 1978. All my schooling was done in Keysborough. My wife and I established a boutique marketing and management company called Ice Edge Marketing approximately five-six years ago. One of our key assets is to act as exclusive Australasian distributors for a US-based film production company called Warren Miller Entertainment. We also run events, hospitality at major stadia and manage professional athletes, with a particular focus on tennis. Our motto is to pursue opportunities that we enjoy delivering. Those in the class of ’86 may remember my family’s long standing involvement in a ski/snowboard hire business at Mt Buller. That involvement now extends three generations and is on-going. The business is located in the village centre of the resort and operates June-October each year. Passions include the family, golf, surfing, tennis, skiing (particularly with a helicopter!), AFL (Go Tiges!), travel, the ponies and business.

OHA CLUBS AND SOCIETIES OHA FOOTBALL
OHA AMATEUR THEATRE The Old Haileyburian’s Association Theatre Company (Old HAT) was formed earlier this year by a group of ex-students from the graduating classes of 2008-9. Our first production, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, is set to be performed on the Aikman Hall reverse stage at Keysborough on the 15 and 17 December 2010. ‘Earnest’ is a fast-paced comedy of mistaken identity, which ridicules the manners and society of the 19th century. Sharp wit opposes snobbery and hypocrisy, amounting to a farcical plot where everyone truly learns ‘the importance of being earnest’.
OHAFC COACH DAVID LAPPAGE (OH ’90) WITH CAPTAIN TONY BROWN
“HE IS ABLE WHO THINKS HE IS ABLE.” – BUDDHA
Self belief, team belief and belief in our jumper and club have all been traits explored by Old Haileybury Amateur Football Club Coach, David Lappage, during the very successful 2010 season. Written off by scribes before a ball was bounced, Old Haileybury completed the 2010 season by being gallant runners-up in Premier B Grand Final and therefore gaining promotion to Premier (A) Division in 2011. More than that was the strong, passionate belief that we, as a club, can match it with any team. With a raft of personnel changes, a new coach, Chairman of Selectors and President, the Bloods were eager for success in 2010. A narrow loss in Round 1 to Uni Blacks was quickly eclipsed by a fabulous 48 point win at Hampton Rovers. In addition, the loyal Bloods following was being introduced to a whole new squad of Bloods players to join the long serving names of Mason, Siapantas, Ford, McLaughlin, Roberts, Voss and Brown. New faces in Douglas, Stowe, Steen, Comben and White were all former Haileybury school boys who would endear themselves quickly to the Bloods’ faithful. As the season progressed another group of OHs - young Cory Millard, fresh from the Collingwood VFL list and the rapid emergence of Pete Gleadhill from the ranks of the u/19s, would be two more reasons for the increased success of the Magenta and Black. Matt Lille would also return from the Scorpions and despite the almost weekly rotation of four-five compulsory changes due to injury, the boys would continue to rack up a plethora of memorable wins.
Tickets are on sale now and are $10 for children/concession and $15 for adults and are available from the OHA on 9213 2260.
OHA CRICKET The OHA Cricket season has commenced. Matthew Baxter does a terrific job running the Club and they are always on the look-out for new players. They play at Keysborough against other “Old Boys” APS schools. So, if you are interested in doing a bit of tweaking or making a few runs, call Matthew on 0414 955 770.
OHA NETBALL Girls interested in joining the Netball Club should contact Rhiannah Carver on 0439 611 093. Our netballers are the reigning APS Old Collegians champions and we are looking to increase the number of available teams for our members in 2011.
OHA BIG BAND
Club stalwarts would point to the Round 7 win at Ivanhoe by 57 points as one of the club’s best wins. Others would follow – the Round 11 win against St Kevins by 17 points and the memorable Round 15 win at St Bernards by 44 points really kick-started our finals surge. We lost several matches by less than 10 points and our final ladder position of second may well have been one better if some of those had fallen our way.
New members are always welcome to the Big Band. The band plays many gigs during the year and has regular practice sessions at Keysborough. Call Jono Somers on 0423 115 669 if you are interested.
While Tony Brown and Brett Voss finished second and forth respectively, in the B Grade Competition Best and Fairest, it was the very even team performance that highlighted the Bloods year. Spencer Roberts was a star for much of the season winning our ‘Best and Fairest’. Brett Voss would win the ‘Most Consistent’ and ‘Goal Kicking’ awards, Matthew Douglas won ‘Most Improved’ and Peter Gleadhill collected the ‘Best First Year Player’ award. Al Johnson would top off a fine season by winning the ‘Coach’s Award’ and David Comben finished the season like a freight train – very hard to pass to secure ‘Best Player in the Finals Series’.
OHA LAWN BOWLS
Throughout the season Hamish ‘Hammer’ McLaughlin, was never beaten, Tom Chisholm and Chris Morrison were key players and Sam Langford-Jones played several ‘blinders’, despite a season hampered with injuries. Off the field we experienced many successes too. Thursday nights became a permanent fixture on the Sport and Culinary Calendar with a diet of Highett Food Patch dinners, darts, poker, table tennis and a few quiet beers with team mates and supporters. Our lunches worked very well with our annual Ladies Lunch setting new standards in 2011. Most importantly, our season was a success because of the people and organisations that supported us – our valuable sponsors, many of them Old Haileyburians. The Magenta and Black have exceeded many people’s expectations in 2010. Hard work, commitment, strong infrastructure and a great sense of belonging have all contributed to our stellar year. We thank you for your enormous commitment to Old Haileybury Football in 2011. It has been a great ride and it might just get even better! GO BLOODS!
The Public Schools Old Boys Bowls tournament will take place at the Kew Heights Bowling Club on Sunday, 28 March 2011. Interested players are asked to contact Mark Thompson via email at Mark. Thompson@sensis.com.au A great day is had by all competing against our kindred APS Schools. The cost of the day is $22 inclusive of green fees and lunch.
OHA ATHLETICS The OHA Athletics Club has recruited brilliantly over winter and has now formed a very good summer team. Of course more numbers adds to the depth of the team and thus new members will be welcomed with open arms. Email David Metherall – david@ linensnthings.com.au or Chris Macdonald - chrism0403@hotmail.com for further information.

OHA SOCCER
OHA HOCKEY
OHSC TEAM – OHA SOCCER CLUB 2010.
OHA HOCKEY – OHA HOCKEY CLUB 2010.
In 2010 the Old Haileybury Soccer Club exceeded all expectations. The senior men’s team won the club’s first premiership taking out the pennant in our division of the Football Federation Victoria Amateurs Competition.
The OHA Hockey Club’s winter 2010 season has concluded with all of our teams finishing the season in style, playing their best hockey of the season in the later rounds.
Players of varying ages and backgrounds united under the Old Haileybury name in a triumphant season highlighted by 16 wins out of 18 matches, scoring 60 goals in the process, and only conceding eight goals. The fact that it is our second season as a club highlights the driving force that this club has, to succeed and gain promotion to the higher divisions of the Football Federation Victoria. The club would like to thank our three sponsors: major sponsor, Red Hot Insulation and also our shirt sponsors: Hair Science and Metanovus. Their support greatly assisted our successful 2010 campaign. In 2011 the club will field two men’s teams, seniors and reserves, and is also looking for interest in forming a women’s team. All are welcome to attend pre-season training, so come join ‘The Bloods’ in 2011. Supporters can find us on Facebook (search ‘Old Haileybury Soccer Club’). If you would like more information about the club or would like to become involved, please contact Club President, Chris Jame (Email: cdjame@gmail.com Mobile: 0418 358 020) or Head Coach, Nic Apostolidis (Email: nic.apostolidis@gmail.com Mobile: 0405 535 997). The Old Haileybury Soccer Club would like to acknowledge our sponsors:
Indeed, rounds 14 to 17 saw no losses for any of our teams – mostly wins, plus a few draws! That enabled the Men’s State League 5 (MSL5) team to reach third on the ladder, and the Men’s Metro 3 South (MM3S) team consolidated fourth position. Our Women’s Metro 4 South (WM4S) team finished in sixth place, but with some close results against the top teams as well. The MSL5 team made it through to the Preliminary Final, losing 1-0 to St Bernards in a quality match that could just have well gone our way instead. The MM3S team lost its Semi-Final to a very strong Mentone team, but deserved its place in the top four. All in all, it was a very good season on-field, with each team able to have an interchange bench of two to four players for most matches. Team captains Jon Blackman, Ray Chang and Lisa Emery managed the teams well, and Jon Blackman as coach also helped us continue to learn how to play this game of ours! We played a combined, mixed team against the School in our Ken Phillips Day match, coming out emphatic victors with a seven-two win. This turned the tables for a change! Socially we have enjoyed trivia nights, including the OHA’s Battle of Haileybury, ten-pin bowling, laser tag and of course our endof-season Presentation Dinner. Best and fairest trophies went to Warwick Baker (MSL5), Andrew Suwignjo (MM3S), and Laura Matthews (WM4S). The President’s Trophy was awarded to James Watts for outstanding service to the Club during the year, and the OHA Council Trophy for Best Clubman was won by Lisa Emery, who headed our functions committee and was involved in everything! We also recognise winter-season milestones such as 100 games, 150 games, and so on. However, this season we celebrated a major milestone indeed! The MSL5 Preliminary Final saw Clark Anstis equal Ian Newman’s long-standing Club record of 555 games (1973-2001). Clark says that it is just as well that we recognise longevity in the game, regardless of skill, having played with the Club in most years since 1976. We look forward to Clark breaking the record next year, and hope to get a good turnout of the “really old” guys to join in the occasion! The 2010/11 summer season is now underway. We are fielding a mixed team on Monday nights at Monash, and a men’s team on Tuesday nights at Monash.
www.oha.org.au
Winter 2011 should once again see us with at least two men’s and one women’s team on the field. Good recruiting may allow us to enter additional teams, so if you are interested, get in touch! OHA Events Class of 1980 Reunion The Class of 1980 gathered in the Altera Terra Room at Keysborough in May 2010, to celebrate 30 years since they departed Haileybury. The large numbers were inspired by John Meckiff, John Thompson, Andrew Hicks and Mark Richards. We hope to see this group at future OHA functions as they march towards 40 years on. Class of 1985 Reunion Just over 40 members of the Class of 1985 enjoyed a fantastic night at the Belgian Beer Cafe in the Eureka Tower to celebrate their 25 year reunion in late November. The night was an amazing success and provided the opportunity for many city based workers to relax and unwind after a long week at work. PETER MERRETT, DEAN LEAR AND CAMERON GREGSON
JEREMY RAE, WILL COX, PETER FLOCKHART AND JOHN FERGUSSON
Class of 1990 Reunion 51 members from the Class of 1990 gathered back at Haileybury on a balmy night in October for what was for many their first visit back to Haileybury in 20 years. We were delighted that Tim Berglund had travelled from London to attend the function – an extraordinary performance! Many others travelled from interstate . Class of 2000 Reunion Wow – what a night! Over 80 members of the Class of 2000 were in extremely high spirits on 8 October 2010, as they gathered for their 10-year reunion. It was terrific to see such a large crowd in attendance. The great turnout symbolised this group as one which has kept close links with each other since their departure from the School. OHA Day at the Races The OHA Day at the Races is always a popular event with our younger members and this year was no exception. By popular demand the event was moved away from Moonee Valley and brought a little closer to home and held at the picturesque Mornington Racecourse. Special thanks to past School Captains, Dayna Schinz and Gordon Barnett for their organisation.

OHA Events Past School Captains Dinner It was the initiative of 2009 School Captain, Gordon Barnett, that culminated in the first ever OHA Past School Captains Dinner. Gordon commented late in his final year at school that it would be wonderful to have the Haileybury School Captains in one room for a special occasion. Unfortunately not all of the past Captains could make it due to work commitments, living arrangements and a multitude of commitments that seem to get in the way these days. However we were delighted that 27 past Captains could make the dinner, which was held in July at The Como Melbourne.

Western Australian Reunion Our inaugural OHA Western Australian Branch Reunion was a most successful and magnificent afternoon on Saturday, 6 November. As we dined at the Old Swan Brewery in Perth, overlooking the Swan River in beautiful sunny weather, no one could question the motives behind Victorians relocating their lives to this magnificent part of the world! 23 Old Haileyburians and their partners enjoyed a wonderful day meeting fellow alumni and many friendships and connections were formed. It was a great opportunity for the WA branch members to learn about the School today and how far it had come since they departed. It was tremendous to have past staff member, Ivan Collins, in tow and great to meet fellow Old Haileyburians such as Ray Irving (OH ’44) and 3 members – Geoffrey Wood, Graham Cooper and David Caddy who completed their schooling at other institutions but still call themselves Old Haileyburians. Another WA reunion will be held in two years time and we encourage those who were unable to attend this time to enjoy the fun and friendships offered at this event. In 2011 we head again to Sydney (4 November) and Brisbane (5 November) to renew our acquaintances with the vast number of Old Haileyburians living in those locations.

OHA Golf Day Dark skies, driving rain and a howling wind greeted players as they arrived for the sixth annual McDonald Real Estate OHA Golf Day at Woodlands. The treacherous conditions forced the cancellation of the event for the first time in its history. This was bitterly disappointing, given we had received a record number of registrations, and had planned a fantastic dinner for later in the evening. We were delighted that McDonald Real Estate had signed as our major naming rights partner for the event.
MCDONALD REAL ESTATE DIRECTOR MARK RICHARDSON (’96) – PROUD SPONSORS OF THE OHA GOLF DAY.
